Well, I'm not sure it makes sense for translators to follow re-filling
of text, since word lengths are not consistent. Why not just use
'diff -b'? Or is there something I'm missing?

In the current (2-21-2002) CVS, the bf24 flavor include modules for
kernel 2.2.20 instead of the version matching the kernel (currently
2.4.17). So no modules can be loaded.
The build process include the following messages:

The help text for tty2 (You are running ash...) is included in the po files
but never used. Neither with nor without the language-chooser option.
In any case the text is shown in english.

that the modules were compiled for kernel 2.2.20.
My conclusion was that the bf24 flavor did indeed contain loadable
modules AND that they belonged to the wrong kernel version.
Should I file a bug report that bf24 contains loadable modules even
though it isn't supposed to?? :-)

That pretty much explained it. I got further building with 'make
resc1440idepci.bin'. I believe the next problem will go away in the near
future when slang1-utf8 hits the mirrors:

Did you try the boot parameter:
sym53c8xx=safe:y
(just write linux sym53c8xx=safe:y at the boot: prompt)
It is mentioned on the help screen, that shows up, if you press F6
immediatly after loading syslinux from the rescue disk.
