This bug turned out to be the same as the many reports about
segfault on corrupt /var/cache/apt/*.bin
In my case, it turned out to be a corrupt /var/cache/apt/pkgcache.bin
I found this out with 'strace apt-get upgrade'
apt mmap'ed /var/cache/apt/pkgcache.bin, and crashed shortly thereafter.
reassign 395210 libxml2
close 395210 2.6.27.dfsg-1
