With XAA the xserver crashes and without it starts but hangs completly.
I tried it now with an empty xorg.conf and it hangs aswell.

I think you got it the wrong way. I just refere to GTK+-1.2, I did not
say that the bug is in that package.
The bug is in X and wrong handling of some data or such. I just refere
