Bug 450649 is about egrep spending 50% of its time clearing memory

I'm not saying this bug isn't a problem, just that people running

I was able to reproduce a similar bug, using the following procedure:
debootstrap etch etch
chroot etch
apt-get install viewcvs
apt-get install apache2
/etc/init.d/apache2 start
perl -pi -e 's/etch/sid/' /etc/apt/sources.list
apt-get update
apt-get install viewvc
iceweasel

Why isn't this patch being merged? I'm not saying it should, but
considering it has about ten dups, at least getting an explanation
about why it shouldn't be would be interesting.
I have been searching the net for that explanation but I couldn't find any.

I automated the workaround pointed by Nick Phillips, within the
attached python script: it successfully corrects the reported error.
For a workaround, either set the template_dir option in the [options]
section of your viewvc.conf and comment out all of the explicit
templates specified in
