Just downloaded Mozilla's compile installed in $HOME and it works.
are all mails stored on the server anyways? maybe you can test it with a
new profile in thunderbird too?

I checked pristine Mozilla's compile of Thunderbird with Enigmail.
I just copied the Sent folder to Local Folders and deleted Sent.msf.
Problem occurs. Not sure if it is fully deterministic but took just
2-3 runs
