Sorry I failed to answer your questions: not file location dependant (/tmp/geeqie for exemple), metadata file in .local/ is properly updated with a tiff:Orientation tag. And the latest tests are with everything under pref/metadata unchecked except "write altered image orientation to metadata".

I had a look at the code, and ended line 477 of image.c as the test that decides to render or not. Indeed, unchecking preferences/metadata/"write altered image orientation to metadata" causes the rotation to be properly displayed (and then forgotten when you close the program) Line 477 of

Where is the file you are trying to edit located in your hard drive folder hierarchy? In the preferences dialog: What are your settings under the "Metadata" tab? Do you have write access to ~/.local/share/geeqie/metadata/ ?
