Bug#345973: New cups configuration splitout breaks Kprinter

2006-01-04 Thread Christopher Martin
Package: cupsys
Version: 1.1.23-13
Severity: important

I'm filing my mailing list message as a bug, since it didn't receive a
response when sent to the mailing list directly.

In summary, the splitting out of the Port and Listen settings has broken
Kprinter. Details below.

Thanks,
Christopher Martin

On Tuesday 20 December 2005 15:28, Martin Pitt wrote:
No, it is a pain, because cupsd.conf is a big conffile that gets
changed in cups from time to time. No need to bother users with dpkg

Packages should not modify conffiles of other packages, i. e. kprint
modify /etc/cups/cupsd.conf. They may, however, change other package's
configuration files, so splitting out these settings into separate
  files actually helps these packages.

I'm not sure I understand the distinction you're making here. In any
case, kprinter configures CUPS by modifying /etc/cups/cupsd.conf; it can
alter many settings, including those related to Port and Browsing. Now
that these the Port and Browsing settings have been split out, trying to
configure CUPS using kprinter results in an error, where kprinter
complains about unknown items include, and decides to leave them to be
safe. The problem is that if you use kprinter to configure CUPS, you will
wind up two sets of Port/Browsing settings; one in cupsd.conf (put there
by kprinter), and one from the included files. If this works at all, it
will cause user confusion about which setting to change, leading them to
think they may be making CUPS secure when it isn't, overriding the
settings they think they set with debconf, etc. In other words, this
change has made kprinter broken and dangerous.

Description : generate panorama project file from images

This package contains all the programs needed to automatically generate
panorama project files from image files. Autopano-SIFT looks at your images
and compares information about the images' content to order them correctly
 to make a panorama.
 .
You need this package if you have some images and you want to stitch them to
 make an unique panorama.
Together with programs like hugin and enblend, you can create top-quality
 panorama images.

Hi,

I've made some packages, but due to patent on sift algorithm, they will
certainly be put in non-free if they are accepted by ftp-masters.

Bug#329583: Bugzilla depends on newer version of libmailtools-perl

2006-01-04 Thread Alexandros Vellis
There is still a need of a new libmailtools-perl in Debian, if we want
to keep using the debian packages. Bugzilla 2.20 depends on
libmailtools-perl, version = 1.65, as ./checksetup.pl reports:

Bugzilla requires some Perl modules which are either missing from
your system, or the version on your system is too old.
They can be installed by running (as root) the following:
   /usr/bin/perl -MCPAN -e 'install Mail::Mailer'
   Minimum version required: 1.65

This is just a nag for the maintainer ;-)

Hi,

I have an entry in my sources.list for which the gpg key is missing:

When I do apt-get update, I get this:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] olivier

So far, so good. Nothing to do with synaptic...

But when I update my lists from synaptic, at the end of the update (when
all my lists were successfuly fetched), I get a popup whose title is
Avertissement (Warning in french). Within the popup windows one can
read (translation from french):
The following problems were found on your system:.
And then there is an empty white zone (where I'm supposed to see the
error message) with scrollbars on the right side and at the bottom.

The popup window should display some error message from apt-get (to
explain that the GPG key couldn't be fetched).

The current svn trunk of synaptic contains a patch that (hopefully)
fixes this problem. I attach it here and I would appreciate if you
 could test it (if possible).

Today I upgraded to synaptic 0.57.7.1 and it fixed the bug. The patch
fixed it! :)

Cheers

Olivier

PS: happy new year :)

Bug#345647: madwifi driver causes kernel oops

2006-01-04 Thread Graham
Hi Kel,

Thank you for the links.

Well, in my experience these gui apps for configuring wireless on linux
really cause more trouble than they are worth.

Maybe, but:

1. You and I are fine with console based configuration tools, but many
people, including the owner of this laptop, will not touch them. The
majority of users really do want a GUI.

2. Software should never crash. Error messages are fine when something
goes wrong, but a crash is never acceptable, especially in kernel
mode.

So don't use a GUI config tool is only valid as a temporary
workaround, not as a permanent solution.

That said, I'm here to help, not to belittle your efforts.

Let me know if there's anything I can do.

I'm thinking about having a look at the code (ath_ioctl_giwscan). I'm
pretty good with C, though not at all familiar with Linux kernel code.
But it might be worth a shot.

Bug#345900: [dpatch-maintainers] Bug#345900: dpatch: make 00list optional

2006-01-04 Thread Charles Fry
It would be most helpful if 00list was optional in dpatch.

It is, you can use the PATCHLIST variable to specify files if you use
dpatch.make, or just supply the list to dpatch apply if you're using it
directly. This is even documented in dpatch.make(7).

That works for dpatch.make, but is not supported by dpatch-edit-patch.

It is already standard to prefix patches with a number corresponding to the
  order in
which they should be applied. All of dpatch's functionality could be
supplied by automatically generating the patch list by sorting the
patch filenames numerically and then alphabetically.

 PATCHLIST=`find debian/patches -type f | sort -n`

 Or something like that.

I still think there is a reasonable argument for allowing a simple
default like this without custom configuration. That is currently one of
the strong points of cdbs' simple-patchsys; it is very simple. Sure more
flexibility is nice for some people, but having good simple standard
default behavior can go a long ways in maximizing the utility of dpatch.

Bug#345921: add profile.d dir so packages can add shell snippets

Sorry, but I have never been a big fan of the wontfix tag. Either a bug
is a bug and should be fixed, or it is not and should be closed.
There is no excuse for not reading the documentation.
shrug
A FAQ isn't the primary place were I expect to find information about a
feature request, the BTS is (BTS is documentation also). Given your comment
'not again' I don't seem to be alone in that expectation.

= by all means close the bug, instead of using wontfix, but do realize that
the repeated filing of this request seems a logical consequence
/shrug

You are welcome to propose a policy change mandating the profile.d thing.

why would we need a policy to allow it? I don't see anything in policy that
prevent's this.

Until then, I consider the profile.d thing as something harmful, as it
would open a can of worms.

Given that:
- policy already prohibits your stated harmfull use of profile.d (you
helpfully give the quote in the FAQ)
- there are non-harmfull uses of profile.d. The reason I filed this bug,
which I explained in my previous message, gives one example.
I'm at a loss as to what exactly the 'can of worms' is that would be opened.
On the other hand providing it would allow me to fix an existing bug filed
by one of our users.

In short it's the responsibility of Debian Policy to stop packagers from
doing harmfull things, not base-files. And this is stopping me from
providing a solution for a reported problem by one of our users (atmittedly
in an edge case), which flies in the face of the social contract IMO.

Remaining questions:
- Are there any harmfull uses of a profile.d dir that the policy quote given
in the FAQ doesn't adress (in the absence of such the can of worms thing is
not a valid argument)? If so what are they?
- Or do you perhaps disagree with my assertion that the use I would put it
to is non-harmfull?

Bug#345939: kernel-package - kernel-headers does an unneccesary build

2006-01-04 Thread Manoj Srivastava
severity 345939 wishlist
retitle 345939 It would be nice if kernel-headers used the new prepare target
thanks

Hi

The kernel headrs package needs the asm link, the versions.h,
and perhaps other changes that are done to the headers in a build. In
2.6, the upstream Makefile provides a prepare target, but this is not
present in 2.4 or 2.2 kernels, so we can't unilaterally use that.

I looked into conditionally using prepare, but otherwise doing
a full build, but the code got messy (we need to cater to both
dpkg-buildpackage and directly calling kernel_headers rules).

Bug#344871: kdm: changing Language option breaks keyboard input

2006-01-04 Thread Christopher Martin
On Saturday 31 December 2005 15:16, Itai Seggev wrote:
I started with the Debian pacakged kdmrc, then edited the file by
hand. I tried using the KDE Control Center as you suggested, and that
worked fine. Confused, I looked at the config file it generated, and
saw that it set Lang to he rather than he_IL or he he_IL.UTF-8 (from
the default en_US). I then restored my original kdmrc and put in he
for Lang, and it also worked. Thus, it seems to be a bug (why does
using he_IL rather than he break some of the functionality?), but
perhaps not as serious as I originally thought.

Also, if you have any systems/chroots
where you're feeling daring, could you see if the problem occurs using
  KDM 3.5 from experimental?

No chroots handy, but it should be easy to test whether setting Lang
to he_IL continues to be a problem in 3.5 as described above.

OK, I re-installed kde-i18n-he, and changed Language=en_US to Language=he,
he_IL, and he_IL.UTF-8. All three seemed to work. I then hacked together a
KDE 3.4 setup. There, all he locales resulted in empty boxes instead of
Hebrew characters, though I could still log in. Not exactly the same
results as you obtained, but interesting.

It would appear that something has been fixed for KDE 3.5, hopefully
including the problem you noticed. I'll leave the bug open until you can
confirm that KDE 3.5 works (or not), when it enters Unstable/Testing or
whenever you feel like trying it, since this is an important issue. Anyone
else using a Hebrew desktop with KDE 3.5 is welcome to chime in.

Thanks,
Christopher Martin

Bug#345640: xserver-xorg: New Xorg crashes with kernel 2.6.14, but not with 2.6.12

 Hi,

I think I run into this same problem... I upgraded the kernel from
2.6.12 to 2.6.14 maybe one hour after upgrading the xserver, so I was
able to have a working xserver for a little bit, which hinted me to
look for a better cause for the crash.
What happens in my Dell Latitude D610 is that Xorg starts using 99.7%
of the CPU and never shows anything else than a blank screen. Xorg
cannot be killed or terminated (signals 9 or 15), but it can be reniced
so that other programs can be run remotely without taking forever.

The problem can be solved by either booting with kernel 2.6.12 or
by downgrading the package xserver-xorg to 6.8.2.dfsg.1-11 (and only
that package, without any of the other accompanying libs)
In summary xorg 6.9.0.dfsg.1-1 works only with kernel 2.6.12, while
 6.8.2.dfsg.1-11 works with both kernels.

This is probably because X.Org 6.9 and kernel 2.6.14 support the DRI on
Radeon 9500 and newer. Try not enabling the DRI, i.e. not loading the
dri module in xorg.conf.

Bug#345925: Bug #345925: libcppunit-dev: please add a pkg-config file for cppunit

2006-01-04 Thread Roger Leigh
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

tags 345925 + patch
thanks

Hi,

I was just about to file a bug about this myself. I've created a
patch to generate a cppunit.pc pkg-config datafile, and also install
and package it.

Steve, I would be grateful if you could forward this upstream as well,
whether or not you patch the Debianised source.

One consideration is that I added @LIBADD_DL@ to Libs.private. For
dynamic linking this is never required (libcppunit is already linked
with it), but for static linking is useless because libdl is
intimately tied to ld.so, so won't work for static linking in any
case. This means the current cppunit-config behaviour is also the
same; it's just something to ponder.

The package also has a number of Lintian warnings:
  W: cppunit source: ancient-standards-version 3.5.2
  W: libcppunit-dev: binary-without-manpage DllPlugInTester
  W: libcppunit-dev: package-has-a-duplicate-relation depends:
libcppunit-1.10-2c2a (= 1.10.2-5), libcppunit-1.10-2c2a
which indicate the packaging could use some attention.

Many thanks,
Roger

 Hi,

Your package still has a build dependency on xlibs-dev. This has
 been removed as announced on:
 http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-announce/2005/11/msg00022.html

This means your package is now failing to build.

I thought it was removed. Well I'll correct that.

clone 345866 -1

I can confirm this bug on Linux 32 and 64 bit platform. The 'serial'
number is different each time, and debugging as indicated doesn't
work. It seems that gdk_x_error never gets called, and --sync doesn't
even get rid of the message, which is, at least, confusing.

LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/lib/firefox gdb --args /usr/lib/firefox/firefox-bin --sync
http://grateful.d.umn.edu/crash.html

I also tried with 'set environment LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/lib/firefox';
is there a special set library search path command withing gdb?

Though I did get this stacktrace; 'break exit' actually works.

#0 0xb73953b6 in exit () from /lib/tls/libc.so.6

MALLOC_CHECK_ doesn't indicate anything bad happening, but valgrind
sure does; invalid reads, indeterminate conditional jumps, and leaks.
Although the crash happens on amd64, valgrind doesn't say anything;
how weird.

Bug#345979: mysql-query-browser: trimming of last chars on editor when accentuated chars are present

2006-01-04 Thread Pau Tallada Crespi
Package: mysql-query-browser
Version: 1.1.17-5
Severity: important

When inserting or updating row data, if the field contains special chars
(accentuated chars, ñ, ç) the field length
is trimmed by one char for each special char it contains.
For example if you put Esdrúixola, the last a will be trimmed and not
inserted in the database.
Moreover, every time you enter the field for edit it , the gui will trim the
last char every time you exit.
One workaround is to put spaces at the end of the field in order to be trimmed
and at least prevent the other
valuable chars being trimmed.
I suppose this bug is possibly related with the usage of a utf-8 locale, as it
is a multibyte encoding, just
supposing...

Thanks in advance for your valuable work!

Pau Tallada.

Bug#345982: rubber: converts pdf to ps even though eps exists

2006-01-04 Thread Jörg Sommer
Package: rubber
Version: 1.0-1
Severity: normal

Hi,

I've seen a behaviour that I couldn't explain and I don't know why it
happens:

$ ls F*
Fundamental-waerme.eps Fundamental-waerme.pdf
Fundamental-waerme.gnuplot Fundamental-waerme.tex
$ rubber --inplace --ps skript.latex
converting /home/joerg/svn/schmeißer-ana3/Fundamental-waerme.pdf into
/home/joerg/svn/schmeißer-ana3/Fundamental-waerme.ps...
compiling skript.latex...
running dvips on skript.dvi...

Why is the pdf converted into a ps and not the eps is used?

Bye, Jörg.

Bug#345973: New cups configuration splitout breaks Kprinter

2006-01-04 Thread Roger Leigh

Christopher Martin [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:

 Package: cupsys
 Version: 1.1.23-13
 Severity: important

I'm filing my mailing list message as a bug, since it didn't receive a
response when sent to the mailing list directly.

In summary, the splitting out of the Port and Listen settings has broken
 Kprinter. Details below.

This looks like a serious bug in kprinter: it doesn't know how to
correctly parse the CUPS configuration file. While the CUPS split
configuration shows up the bug, it is not a bug in CUPS, in my
opinion.

This should probably be reassigned to kprinter. If kprinter is now
actively dangerous, the severity can also be raised.

Roger

Bug#345984: lsb: Allow package to be built on sarge

2006-01-04 Thread Adam D. Barratt
Package: lsb
Version: 3.0-13
Severity: wishlist
Tags: patch

Hi,

The attached patch allows lsb to be built on a sarge system, and at least
lsb-base to be installed correctly on sarge (tested on i386). Obviously
lsb-core will be uninstallable without more work by the backporter due to
the glibc dependency.

The patch is based on the example in
http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-announce/2005/06/msg00010.html; fwiw,
that post also states that the appropriate version of dpkg-dev to depend on
for the new DEB_* variables is 1.13.5, not 1.13.2.

Adam

Bug#345983: cvs2svn: fails when same file is in attic and repository

2006-01-04 Thread Charles Fry
Package: cvs2svn
Version: 1.3.0-1
Severity: normal

I receive the following error when attempting to convert my repository:

ERROR: A CVS repository cannot contain both
   .../server.xml,v
   and
   .../Attic/server.xml,v

Well, my CVS repository does contain both, so deal with it. ;-)

In this case I think it would be sufficient to ignore the attic version,
or alternatively to first import the histories from the attic version,
and then from the repository version. In any case, exiting with an error
is less than satisfactory.

cheers,
Charles

OK. Since there don't appear to be any sources for it, any debian

Right. It *certainly* isn't needed on Debian.

This one time, at band camp, Remigiusz ??wic said:

This seems a bit inflated to me - do you actually lose data, or is it
just that you heard someone with similar error mesages lost data?

 Ok, my mistake. Sorry.

No problem. Just pointing it out.

During boot I see errors in dmesg. I've done little investigation
and found that is not problem with my hard drive, but only with
hdparm which is starting by udev.
Errors look like that and I find them only at start of udev:

   hda: dma_intr: status=0x58 { DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest }
   ide: failed opcode was: unknown
   hda: set_drive_speed_status: status=0x58 { DriveReady SeekComplete
   DataRequest }

This means that you asked hdparm to do something that the kernel and
your hardware couldn't agree to do.

No way. When I manually apply my settings to hdparm every thing is ok.

Hrm, interesting. Does that mean it's not an hdparm problem, but a race
condition in udev or something? I am going to cc: the udev maintainer
on this to see what he thinks.

Marco, can you take a look at

Bug#345921: add profile.d dir so packages can add shell snippets

2006-01-04 Thread Santiago Vila
Please read the archives of debian-policy. This issue has been discussed
several times there.

There will always be people for which your feature request is a good
thing, but IMHO the side effects of it will not compensate the
benefits, so I definitely need something more than it would be useful
for at least one package (for example, a policy amendment mandating
the use of profile.d).

OK, reassigning it to the kernel guys.

Kernel-team: I have amde this bug priority important, because I feel
like generating udev events before the deivce is actually usable makes
udev even less reliable. If you disagree about the priority or
whatever, feel free to handle it as you see fit.

I must also note that the submitter is not using a Debian kernel, and I
do not know if there are Debian patches to handle udev events better.
If you don't feel like this is your problem, feel free to reassign it

Bug#345985: mozilla-browser: 1.7.12-1 quickly crashes on amd64 testing

2006-01-04 Thread Pete Harlan
Package: mozilla-browser
Version: 2:1.7.8-1
Severity: important

Using amd64's testing branch (and, I'm told, sid), version
1.7.12-1 of mozilla-browser crashes when browsing a web page.
Reverting to 1.7.8-1 restores functionality.

(I'm reverting to

libnspr4_1.7.8-1_amd64.deb
libnss3_1.7.8-1_amd64.deb
mozilla-browser_1.7.8-1_amd64.deb
mozilla-psm_1.7.8-1_amd64.deb

not just the browser.)

An example website to reproduce this behavior is www.artselect.com;
click on a link or two and it should crash (with a segmentation
fault). I'm told that hitting the back button will make it crash if
it hasn't crashed yet.

I have tested this with various self-compiled kernels over the past
several months, ever since 1.7.12-1 came out; it has never worked for
me (or for others on the amd64 list; a call of does this work for
you received no affirmative answers.)

Thanks,
Pete

Bug#345987: mh-e: postinst script blocks in i386 chroot

2006-01-04 Thread Laurent Bonnaud
Package: mh-e
Version: 7.85-1
Severity: normal

Hi,

in my amd64 system I have a i386 chroot (that contains my older Debian
system). When I install or upgrade mh-e in this chroot, the postinst
script blocks on the execution of idn. Here are the processes that
are started by the postinst:

# ps auxw
[...]
root 20571 0.0 0.1 4544 1280 pts/20 S+ 15:01 0:00 /bin/sh
/var/lib/dpkg/info/mh-e.postinst configure
root 20572 0.0 0.1 5644 1864 pts/20 S+ 15:01 0:00 /usr/bin/perl
-w /usr/lib/emacsen-common/emacs-package-install mh-e
root 20581 0.0 0.0 0 0 pts/20 Z+ 15:01 0:00
[emacs-package-i] defunct
root 20584 0.0 0.1 4552 1320 pts/20 S+ 15:01 0:00 /bin/sh -e
/usr/lib/emacsen-common/packages/install/mh-e emacs21 em
root 20591 0.0 0.6 13552 7136 pts/20 S+ 15:01 0:00 emacs21 -q
--no-site-file -no-site-file -batch -l path.el -f batch-
root 20596 0.0 0.0 3740 656 ?Ss 15:01 0:00 /usr/bin/idn
--quiet --idna-to-ascii --usestd3asciirules

Killing the idn process unblocks the script and allows the package
to configure.

This problem does not exist in my other i386 system, that is not a
chroot and runs on a i386 kernel.

Dear Debian developer,

A (extemely usefull) quilt minor mode for emacs from Matt Mackall is
available at

http://www.selenic.com/quilt/

I don't really know if this is the correct place to ask for it, but it
would be usefull, even distributed in /usr/share/doc

Thanks for doing the quilt package !

Bug#274924: nm256 - system freeze on recording

2006-01-04 Thread Florian Schlichting
Hi David,

On Mon, Jan 02, 2006 at 09:19:45PM +0100, David Schmitt wrote:
 Hi Florian!

Can you reproduce the problem with a current kernel (testing: 2.6.12,
 unstable: 2.6.14)?

well, things have changed a little bit, but just a bit...

using either kernel, I now get an error message with rec/sox:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ rec alsa14.wav
Send break (control-c) to end recording
sox: Failed reading /dev/dsp: Invalid audio buffer size 0

I then tried 'cat /dev/dsp rec.file'; the first time with 2.6.14-2-686
the system froze just like before, but then when I tried with 2.6.12 and
later again with 2.6.14 I get the message cat: /dev/dsp: Input/output
error on stdout and there are a few lines in /var/log/syslog:

Jan 5 00:40:32 localhost kernel: sound: DMA buffer(2) == NULL
Jan 5 00:40:32 localhost kernel: Device NM256, chn=out

(this is the same for /dev/dsp1, but for /dev/dspW, I only get the error
message to stdout, not the log entries...)

I don't know what you make of this, so...

Package: gnucash
Followup-For: Bug #338141

package gnucash in uninstallable in unstable due to dependency problems.
The problem exists because version 1.8.12 is not in the repositories
(only for powerpc, according to packages.debian.org), but the
gnucash-common package already is in this version for all plataforms
Other problem exists with the guile dependency:
gnucash depends both in guile-1.6-libs and guile-1.6-slib, but the
latter depends on slib, which conflicts with the available version of
guile-1.6-libs (=1.6.7-1.1).

Bug#345973: New cups configuration splitout breaks Kprinter

2006-01-04 Thread Christopher Martin
On Wednesday 04 January 2006 11:27, you wrote:
 Christopher Martin [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:
  Package: cupsys
  Version: 1.1.23-13
  Severity: important

I'm filing my mailing list message as a bug, since it didn't receive a
response when sent to the mailing list directly.

In summary, the splitting out of the Port and Listen settings has
  broken Kprinter.

Kprinter basically reads in the existing settings, then completely rewrites
cupsd.conf with any user-specified changes. Already a dodgy way of doing
things, granted, but not trivial to patch.

Given this, consider the complexity involved in it following the Include
files in cupsd.conf. It would have to remember that certain settings
belonged to each include, and ensure that when written out, these settings
were written to the relevant include, not the main cupsd.conf. Now imagine
that a user has commented out a setting in one of the includes. Kprinter,
when writing its settings, places the setting (which as far as it knows
wasn't set anywhere) in cupsd.conf. The user now uncomments the settings in
one of the included files. Which setting counts? Does the user realize what
they've done?

I understand that you'd rather reassign this bug and tell KDE to re-write
their printer tools, but I'm not sure that this will yield results. This
bug is an attempt to at least make the CUPS team aware of what's happened,
i.e. the full implications of the recent changes, and ask for suggestions
as much as anything else; if you can think of a solution, then great.

Cheers,
Christopher Martin

Bug#345374: Patch for bug

It looks like this happens because ide-generic should be loaded in the last
place (not only after piix).

This patch fixes it, adding ide-generic at the end of the modules list instead
of after the other ide driver.

Does this also happen if you don't enable page flipping and/or use

Disabling page flipping has no effect, setting

Option AccelMethod EXA

fixes the problem, however causes an unusual glitch -- on Gnome startup
the cursor changes to a bright translucent square, then back to the
usual arrow. This glitch disappears if software cursor is enabled.

The above URL contains all my recent work on SpanDSP stuff, and the newer

to pass through the tests of Linda and Lintian, but could require some

Any new info about these my packages? Would be nice to update the Debian

Unfortunately 3.8.2005-12-06-2 doesn't fix the problem. libcapi20-3 is
still missing the so files.

Please test your package more thoroughly before uploading as this is not
the first time that something like this happens and very unpleasant for
a dial-up user if you don't have an old copy of libcapi20-3.

I agree that it's unpleasant, but that's why it's called unstable, by
running that you run the risk of breakage. May I suggest using
testing, which won't have the most obvious bugs...

Well, I know how to fix such problems. I'm an experienced Debian user
and also maintain packages for Debian. That's why I would expect at
least the minimum of testing before a package is uploaded. unstable is
no excuse for uploading non working packages.
I also know that I takes time to maintain a package and you shouldn't
consider this as a personal offense. I do appreciate everyones work for
Debian.

Additionally, isdnutils is rather large, and maintaining it has become a
team effort (although I confess I need to get a bit more involved...)
 Feel free to help ;-)

I actually sent you some ideas/files (making capi devices hotpluggable)
but never heard back from you.

Cheers,
Michael

Bug#343836: [pkg-fetchmail-maint] Bug#345944: CVE-2005-4348 USN-233-1 fetchmail vulnerability

2006-01-04 Thread Matthias Andree

This is a duplicate of Bug#343836, merging.

Loïc Minier wrote:

and forwareded:

 ===
 Ubuntu Security Notice USN-233-1 January 02, 2006
 fetchmail vulnerability
 CVE-2005-4348
 ===

 [...]

 Details follow:

Steve Fosdick discovered a remote Denial of Service vulnerability in
fetchmail. When using fetchmail in 'multidrop' mode, a malicious email
server could cause a crash by sending an email without any headers.
Since fetchmail is commonly called automatically (with cron, for
example), this crash could go unnoticed.

This is misattributed:
Daniel Drake (Gentoo) had publicly reported the issue on December 5 already,
http://lists.ccil.org/pipermail/fetchmail-friends/2005-December/009880.html,
two weeks before Steve Fosdick did.

At that time, a different fix had already been in the upstream fetchmail
CVS, which was in pretest phase for the 6.3.1 release that was released
one day after Steve's report.

The patch that was committed /upstream/ was a variant of
http://lists.berlios.de/pipermail/fetchmail-devel/2005-December/000585.html
that left the curly braces in fetchmail. It may not qualify as the
minimum fix though.

This is because 3.4-1 hasn't been built for all architectures yet; if

Debian Bug report logs: package proguard in unstable (versions 3.3.2-1, 3.4-1)

http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/pkgreport.cgi?pkg=proguarddist=unstablearch=i386

Admittedly, it's only hurd-i386 that hasn't built it yet. Maybe we
should restrict the default architectures to all release architectures
or something, rather than all archive architectures.

I've attached a patch to fix this. Since I can't test the package, I

give any errors/warnings related to my changes, but I don't know if the

I hope this is useful. Happy hacking.

AgentName values on this system: dasd firmware ieee1394 input net pci

So [AgentArguments] aren't optional, despite the [].

# hotplug usb add
Bad USB agent invocation, no action

Well, it would be nice if usage would say what AgentArguments can be.

Anyway, I have to keep doing init 1 about once an hour to get my
Palm back connected. invoke-rc.d hotplug restart didn't help.

The man page says
   /etc/init.d/hotplug [start|stop|status|force-reload|restart]
but I thought we were supposed to use invoke-rc.d.

2006-01-04 Thread Erich Schubert
Package: enemies-of-carlotta
Version: 1.2.1-1
Severity: minor

The manpage only lists that you can set moderation to auto, but
doesn't explain what this means...
I'd also suggest two settings - auto and self; where auto means
that any member-post is not moderated; and self (like in ezmlm) is to
be moderated by the posting member himself.

Oh, and I'd really like to have this posting-only members, too.
Because I happen to use different sender adresses depending on where I
post, and evolution (in contrast to mutt) can't be configured to
automatically pick certian senders for certain recipients.
I think this was added with ezmlm-idx, -u option or so.
Maybe commands like e.g. listname-postonly-subscribe could be used to
subscribe to this functionality...

Kari Pahula [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:

But all of the above are just implementation details. The important
change would be to make it a requirement for build-{arch,indep} to be
 present.

The difficulty with this sort of change is that it requires changing every
Debian package, or near to. I'm going to have the same problem with
building the bearoff database in gnubg, so I'm quite willing to do my part
and add build-{arch,indep} to all my packages, but that still leaves tens
of thousands to go.

Generally policy doesn't change until the change has mostly been
implemented in practice.

I'm not entirely sure how one does go about making a change like this.
Get consensus on debian-devel, send a note to debian-devel-announce asking
everyone to change their packages, and get a test into lintian?

consider this as a personal offense. I do appreciate everyones work for
 Debian.

I actually haven't had time for this particular package for some time,
uploads have mainly been the kind work of Matthias Klose, although the
last one was done by someone else.

Additionally, isdnutils is rather large, and maintaining it has become a
team effort (although I confess I need to get a bit more involved...)
  Feel free to help ;-)

I actually sent you some ideas/files (making capi devices hotpluggable)
but never heard back from you.

As it's a team effort, sending such things as wishlist bugs is the best,
so that there's a record of it, and anyone can see it. I'm afraid that
that message is probably lost in the 4000 messages in my inbox :-(
If you happen to still have your sent copy, please do send it as a
wishlist bug.

Thanks,
Paul Slootman

Description : smart common input method platform
Smart Common Input Method (SCIM) is an input method (IM) platform.
Input methods are needed to enter complex characters in many non-latin
languages. SCIM provides a common platform for various plugin modules
and independent IM programs, as well as a set of modules and programs
on its
own. It is highly modularized and exposes abstract interfaces, so
that plugin modules with different functions can easily communicate
with each
other. The currently supported module types are configuration, IM
engine, front end, filter, and setup GUI.

SCIM achieves the communication between IM engines and front ends
through both shared library linking and server/client mode. It
supports XIM

protocol, as well as GTK+ IM module and Qt IM module.

This package is the main binary package of SCIM. It includes: the
main program scim (GTK+ based) and other support programs; simple
configuration
module, X11 front end module, rawcode IM engine module,
simplified/traditional Chinese conversion filter module, and their
corresponding setup GUI
modules; GTK+ panel and its setup GUI module; and a GTK+ based setup
tool.

SCIM is a well accepted platform and features various input method
engines for many languages. In Debian you can find the following
separately
 packaged IMs useful: scim-table-{additional,ja,po,zh}, scim-pinyin,
scim-uim, scim-m17n, scim-chewing, scim-anthy, scim-canna, scim-prime,
and
scim-skk. GTK+ users would also find package scim-gtk2-immodule
useful for GTK+ IM module support.

For development on SCIM platform, please see the description of
scim-dev package.

Bug#345998: enemies-of-carlotta: Use standard exit codes in --incoming mode

2006-01-04 Thread Erich Schubert
Package: enemies-of-carlotta
Version: 1.2.1-1
Severity: wishlist
Tags: patch

Attached patch will use a short error reporting in --incoming mode,
and use appropriate exit codes (from the os module) for common errors.
When used as a postfix pipe transport, EoC used to report exceptions
wrapped into a single line; thus causing a really ugly error message.

by using appropriate exit codes in sys.exit(), postfix (as does
procmail) understands what the type of error is, and will produce a
nicer error message; by printing just a tiny bit of additional information
this hopefully makes much more sense to the user:

Bug#346000: svn-buildpackage: document requirements for manual repository preparation

2006-01-04 Thread Charles Fry
Package: svn-buildpackage
Version: 0.6.14
Severity: wishlist

While svn-inject is very helpful, it can not always be used. For
example, if layout type 2 is desired (though hopefully the patch will be
integrated soon ;-) ), or when moving a repository from cvs, with
cvs2svn.

Maybe I just missed it, but it would be nice to have a brief piece of
documentation, perhaps in the svn-inject manpage, that explained what
svn-inject did and how the same process could be achieved manually.
While this may be unreasonably complex when upstream is stored in the
respository, my tests suggest that it is fairly straightforward when
mergeWithUpstream is used. That said, having it documented would
increase my confidence that I was doing the right thing. :-)

cheers,
Charles

In particular, TOBEPRINTED, and ACTIVE. I left the whole table,

not exist. It does exist with the file attached to the original

Bug#345747: synaptic: Cannot remember password

2006-01-04 Thread Létező
On Tue, Jan 03, 2006 at 10:57:35AM +0100, Ferenczi Viktor wrote:
  Package: synaptic

Synaptic cannot remember root password. I enter the root password and
check the remember password checkbox. Next time synaptic asks for root
password again and again. Sometimes (rarely) it remembers password and
does not ask for it a few times. Then asks again.

This seems to be a gksu problem (synaptic uses it to get root). It
maybe a missing gnome-keyring. But the gksu maintainer (hello Gustavo
 :) will know better.

Thanks for your comment. Installing gnome-keyring solved my problem. I'm a KDE
user and only some of my applications require gnome.

Maintainer: Please add gnome-keyring to the dependency list of synaptic (if
possible), then close this bug report.

Thank you, Viktor

I had been following the unfolding issues with the expectation of
uploading at the point release. I'm hoping that they can get the
configure scripts worked out so we can ship without having to patch them
and such (effort to eliminate all debian-specific patches except for
the manpage fixups).

Bug#345436: xlibs: Keyboard not working properly after upgrade to 6.9.0.dfsg.1-1

2006-01-04 Thread Francois LEIBER
i have exactly the same problem (among which maj, alt and alt-gr keys
not working, as you can see) after upgrading, and a few hours of testing
to solve it changed nothing.
it got even worse when after changing xorg.conf, gnome would freeze
while loading, and since ctrl+alt+f1 wasn't working any more, i had to
boot on a knoppix to access my computer in command line.

other symptoms include del keys not working under gnome

i joined my xorg.conf and xorg.log.

i was so happy to swith to xorg 6.9, but unfortunately this issue is
preventing me from programing, so i'll be happy to find a way to fix it ;)

Bug#345996: scim and scim-tables-additional seem broken

It would be much nicer if you can attach English logs, just run

Also, I would prefer bug reports generated by the reportbug tool

First, I don't understand why you use aptitude install scim when you
apparently already have scim 1.0.2-3 installed and really want an

problem looks like you are trying to do partial upgrade and aptitude
doesn't allow it.

If for what ever reason you don't want dist-upgrade, please try
aptitude install scim scim-gtk2-immodule scim-tables-additional
scim-uim scim-m17n and report back, thanks.

Hope this helps,

Bug#345759: Guarddog UDP connection problems

2006-01-04 Thread Simon Edwards
Hello,

OK, for people who are having trouble with UDP. Firstly, user defined UDP
protocols _do_not_ require an explicit iptables rule for allowing reply
packets. Reply packets are handled by iptable's connection tracking feature.
This is what these lines do:

iptables -A INPUT -m state --state ESTABLISHED,RELATED -j ACCEPT
iptables -A OUTPUT -m state --state ESTABLISHED,RELATED -j ACCEPT
iptables -A FORWARD -m state --state ESTABLISHED,RELATED -j ACCEPT

UDP has worked fine in Guarddog for quite a few years now.

What I want is for people who are having trouble to try to contact their
teamspeak/UDP server with their client software, wait 5 seconds and then
execute this command in shell:

cat /proc/net/ip_conntrack ~/ip_conntrack.txt

(you probably want to queue this up first in your shell :-) ). Then email me
([EMAIL PROTECTED], *not* this list) these files/info:

* ~/ip_conntrack.txt
* /etc/rc.firewall  (your firewall script)
* the firewall log messages in /var/log/messages (showing the UDP packet being
stopped).
* your kernel version.
* the output of lsmod command ( lsmod ~/lsmod.txt )
* the distribution you are using

We are trying to figure out why UDP connection tracking isn't working.

cheers,

Comments/Problems:

I have installed the Italian version of Etch with 2.6-12 Linux

All the .deb package are not installed, they are downloaded but not
installed in the system. The install system task don't work: it ask what
type of package you want install (desktop, laptop, web server, ...) but
after download all the needed package it do not install they ... the
process will remain in stand by at 15% for a while and they exit to the
main menu.

I have see there are warning like this:
debconf: Obsolete command TITLE Configurazione in corso di exim

I have this warning/error for the following packages: flex libssl0.9.8 exim4

Next message is about 10 minuts after and say: init: ^MProcess
`/sbin/debian-installer` (pid 1893) exited. Scheduling it for restart.

You cannot select single package during install process

I have installed Debian GNU/Linux testing (Etch); I have see that the
/etc/apt/sources.list do not have the following line:

deb http://secure-testing.debian.net/debian-secure-testing
etch/security-updates main contrib non-free
deb-src http://secure-testing.debian.net/debian-secure-testing
etch/security-updates main contrib non-free

as reported here: http://secure-testing-master.debian.net/
and so the key for this source is not installed

Also the CD-ROM source is not commented

For solve the problems I have do:
# cd /var/cache/apt/archive
# dpkg -i *
# apt-get install -f

this operation have removed 7 package and after that all seem to work

Thanks for all your work.

Ciao
Davide

Bug#341055: = SpamAssassin Bugzilla Bug 4590

2006-01-04 Thread Jan Peter Hecking

Hi,

we're running into this problem, too, on a Debian 3.1 system with some
packages from unstable (incl. spamassassin-3.1.0a-1). The issue appears
to be reported in the SpamAssassin Bugzilla as bug 4590:
http://issues.apache.org/SpamAssassin/show_bug.cgi?id=4590

There is one suggested workaround to ``use the --round-robin switch to
avoid this´´ which I will try and see if it helps.

Jan
