I'm not convinced splitting the package is a good idea (thus wontfix).
I'd rather see laptop-mode-tools merged into pm-utils.

Or does laptop-mode-tools offer any compelling features which makes that
impossible?

I'm curious (and you might want to add it to the description): does this tie
in with modern desktop systems via DBUS or whatever, or is this a standalone
thing?

Bug#292621: IPv6 patch

2011-02-09 Thread Andreas Unterkircher
We are quiet happy with it, as it is easy to configure and powerful -
apart from being a bash moloch :-)

At least getting it capable of IPv6 would be nice.
Is there a repository against I can format a patch for this?

Andreas

Zitat von Alexander Wirt :

Phil Whineray announced a working IPv6 firehol version on the

I have tested it already and it looks good.

As I don't use firehol anymore (and I think its kind of deprecated) I'll
orphan firehol soon. If you want to take over maintenance - go ahead - if you
need help - ask.

The "default timeout" referred to here is a cluster-wide one.
The warning is indicating that this is insufficient for the resource

2011-02-09 Thread Salvo Tomaselli
Package: gcc-4.4
Version: 4.4.5-10
Severity: minor

I believe that the gcc symlink should be provided as an alternative and hence
handled with the update-alternatives tool, to decide which compiler should be
the default, without forcing the newest one to be automatically the default.

I suppose it should be fairly easy to modify the package to provide such
option.

2011-02-09 Thread Salvo Tomaselli
Package: wpasupplicant
Version: 0.6.10-2.1
Severity: normal

Greetings,

I can't understand why wpasupplicant should depend on a library
to use smart card readers.
If in some very very rare configurations that is used, then it
could be suggested or recommended but since wpasupplicant works
without this library, it should not depend on it.

Also i think it can be very confusing for non so expert users
to be prompted a question asking to which serial port the reader
is plugged and a selection allowing ttyS* to be chosen, when they have
no smart card reader and no clue what apt is talking about.

Bug#612714: netfilter: fails to match state of IPv6 connections

2011-02-09 Thread Nejc Škoberne

Package: linux-2.6
Version: 2.6.32-30
Severity: normal
Tags: upstream ipv6

I tested this only by filtering bridged traffic.

How to repeat:

1. Set the IPv6 FORWARD default policy to DROP.
2. Add this rule:

ip6tables -A FORWARD -j ACCEPT

3. This way, the packets (neighbor discovery, ICMP ping ...) are not dropped.
4. We delete the previous rule and add this one:

ip6tables -A FORWARD -m state --state NEW,ESTABLISHED,RELATED -j ACCEPT

5. The IPv6 packets, which should be forwarded are now dropped.

For the record: if I test this with Lenny, the packets are forwarded if I match
INVALID packets and accept them. In Squeeze even this doesn't seem to work.

Bug#612712: reportbug complains about unicode conversion error

2011-02-09 Thread Michael Tokarev
Package: reportbug

When filing bugeports when some non-ascii locales are in

It works only when explicitly unsetting $LANG.

Now, it may be python bug (2.6), and it may be

But in any case, the problem makes it difficult to

well, why does this end up in /usr/local, me gets confused, anyway
there are newer packages around afais:
 gcc-4.6 | 4.6-20110125-1 | experimental | source, amd64, armel, i386, ia64,
mips, s390

So it did work at some point? That is an info you didn't tell yet.
You can easily tell it to do backups in /etc/initramfs-tools/initramfs.conf
anyway why don't you keep another kernel around?
Running unstable one should be able to debug one own's box, that's the rule.
It is working well for thousands other, no idea yet what goes wrong here.

hmm right forgot to check 32 bit legacy, well there the line is similar,
but

what is your cat /etc/ld.so.conf /etc/ld.so.conf.d/*.conf

well the question is why do you have a non working libgcc in /usr/local/lib ??

Nope, your report is still missing a lot, like
lsinitramfs /boot/path_to_broken_initramfs

and the output of
sh -x /usr/sbin/mkinitramfs -o /tmp/fooo

to backup the claims.

thank you.

Bug#612711: jabberd14: jabberd does not report errors - either silently or suggesting stupid workarounds

2011-02-09 Thread Michael Tokarev
Package: jabberd14
Version: 1.6.1.1-5+b1
Severity: normal

jabberd error reporting is nearly non-existing.
For example, access denied opening user profile
.xml file is silently ignored (returning
"unauthorized" to client without a way to
understand what's wrong, only strace on the
server helps). Another example is #256622.
When initializing network connections and
socket() fails (see #579945), instead of
providing at least errno code it suggests
that this is due to another server is running,
which is stupid.

Severity is at least normal not a wishlist,
since there are numerous other issues which
can be only diagnosed using a hammer (strace)
without at least minimal attempt for error
reporting.

Bug#612710: pm-utils: split package to avoid conflicts

2011-02-09 Thread Ritesh Raj Sarraf
Package: pm-utils
Version: 1.4.1-6
Severity: normal

pm-utils is important for suspend/resume functionality. For other power
savings work it has new modules like laptop-mode-tools does. It would be
good if pm-utils could be split into pm-utils-core and pm-utils-modules.
This would give users the choice to choose a different power savings
tool, like laptop-mode-tools, if they prefer.

Making it conflict does not look the best approach.

Bug#612707: Upgrade Lenny to Squeeze (s390 port) results in unbootable system (recovery successful)

2011-02-09 Thread Stephen Powell
Package: upgrade-reports
Version: 6.0

I just finished doing an upgrade from Lenny to Squeeze on the s390
port, running in a virtual machine under z/VM 5.4.0. I was ultimately
successful, but the upgrade was not smooth. I encountered two major
problems, one related to initramfs-tools and/or module-init-tools
and the other related to udev.

First, I will describe my disk environment:

   device device partitionmount device devicedevice
   number namename point typeformatdriver
   -- -- --- - -- --
   0200/dev/dasda /dev/dasda1 / 3390CMS reserved DIAG
   0201/dev/dasdb /dev/dasdb1 /boot 3390CMS reserved ECKD
   0202/dev/dasdc /dev/dasdc1 /home 3390CMS reserved DIAG
   0203/dev/dasdd /dev/dasdd1 swap 3390CMS reserved DIAG

/etc/modprobe.d/dasd contained this statement:

   options dasd_mod dasd=0.0.0200(diag),0.0.0201,0.0.0202-0.0.0203(diag)

/etc/initramfs-tools/modules contained this statement:

   dasd_diag_mod

/etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/driver-policy contained this statement:

   MODULES=dep

The zero-length files in /etc/sysconfig/hardware originally created by
the Debian installer for the four dasd devices had been erased (rm),
since they are now being mounted by the kernel (via the options passed
to the dasd_mod module) instead of sysconfig-hardware.

/etc/fstab looked like this:

   proc /proc proc defaults 0 0
   /dev/dasda1 / ext3 defaults,errors=remount-ro 0 1
   /dev/dasdb1 /boot ext3 defaults 0 2
   /dev/dasdc1 /home ext3 defaults 0 2
   /dev/dasdd1 none swap sw 0 0

All of this worked fine under Lenny. I made sure my Lenny system was
up-to-date with the latest point release and security updates before
starting. Also, I purged all obsolete packages. I checked out the
package database and found it in perfect condition. I then updated
/etc/apt/sources.list and pointed it to the squeeze repositories.
I then did

   apt-get update
   apt-get upgrade

It updated a bunch of packages, but did not install any new packages
or delete any old packages. So far, so good. I then upgraded the
kernel and udev and did a reboot.

   apt-get install linux-image-2.6.32-5-s390x
   apt-get install udev
   shutdown -r now;exit

I did this from a remote SSH client. The machine shut down, but
did not reboot. (Yes, a new initial RAM file system was built
and zipl was re-run.) I logged on to the virtual machine console
using a 3270 emulator under z/VM and rebooted again. The kernel
began to boot, but it was unable to mount the permanent root file
system and dropped me into an "(initramfs)" busybox boot prompt.

   cat /proc/modules

revealed that modules dasd_mod, dasd_eckd_mod, and dasd_diag_mod,
among others, were loaded. Poking around in the sysfs pseudo
file system revealed that the "use_diag" pseudo files
(/sys/bus/ccw/devices/0.0.0200/use_diag,
/sys/bus/ccw/devices/0.0.0202/use_diag, and
/sys/bus/ccw/devices/0.0.0203/use_diag all contained the value
"1", and /sys/bus/ccw/devices/0.0.0201/use_diag contained the
value "0". This meant that the options statement in
/etc/modprobe.d/dasd had been read and applied. But only
device number 0201 (/dev/dasdb1) had its "online" flag set
to "1" in /sys/bus/ccw/devices/0.0.0201. The online flags
for the other three disk devices were set to 0. I prodded
the boot process along by issuing these commands at the
"(initramfs)" boot prompt:

   echo 1 >/sys/bus/ccw/devices/0.0.0200/online
   echo 1 >/sys/bus/ccw/devices/0.0.0202/online
   echo 1 >/sys/bus/ccw/devices/0.0.0203/online
   exit

This manually brought the disk devices online and the boot process
continued. I eventually got a login prompt on the 3215
virtual console, but I was unable to establish a connection
using a remote SSH client. I logged in as root using the
3215 virtual console and did some poking around. I discovered
that the network device (a virtual OSA) had not come online.
I got it manually working with the following commands:

   # echo 0.0.0300,0.0.0301,0.0.0302 >/sys/bus/ccwgroup/drivers/qeth/group
   # echo 0 >/sys/bus/ccwgroup/drivers/qeth/0.0.0300/layer2
   # echo 1 >/sys/bus/ccwgroup/drivers/qeth/0.0.0300/online
   # ifup eth0

(My virtual OSA was at device number 0300.) This brought up
the network interface and I was then able to login using a
remote SSH client.

Without documenting the debugging process, let me just cut to
the chase and document the fixes for the above two problems.
The first was fixed by editing /etc/modprobe.d/dasd and adding
the following two lines:

   softdep dasd_eckd_mod pre: dasd_diag_mod
   softdep dasd_fba_mod pre: dasd_diag_mod

The above two lines document a couple of "soft dependencies".
Both dasd_eckd_mod and dasd_fba_mod have a "hard dependency" on
dasd_mod, but now they also have a "soft dependency" on
dasd_diag_mod. This causes the kernel to make sure that
dasd_diag_mod is loaded before it loads e

As you can see at [1] there are several. I tried this on my phone[2][3]
which also runs Debian armel and found that compiling libicns without
optimisation and with debug symbols, it extracted the file fine.
Compiling it with -O2 and with debug symbols it didn't extract fine. So
this is probably a compiler optimisation issue on armel at least.

Just to clarify, there is nothing wrong with the SOCK_CLOEXEC flag which
is supported only in recent kernels.

This bug only appears if the package is built using a Linux kernel >= 2.6.27
but the JK module is deployed on a server running a Linux kernel < 2.6.27.

severity 609886 grave

Hello,

I really have to apologize, this is indeed a RC bug. I explain why:

Linux kernels older than 2.6.27 didn't support SOCK_CLOEXEC flag
with socket(2) syscall. The kernels supported in Lenny are under this
category.

When libapache2-mod-jk is build with a kernel that support SOCK_CLOEXEC
flag with socket(2) syscall, the result is a buggy module. This is the case
for Squeeze kernels. I will have to report this to upstream.

I will disable that flag until upstream sort this out and I'll prepare
a fix for this
right away. I guess this should be included in Squeeze 6.0.1 since it's a
true RC bug.

Thanks to Vanegh for giving me access to his system in order to debug
and fix this.

Cheers,

Bug#532005: Found 532005 in Squeeze Kernel 2.6.32-30

2011-02-09 Thread Nick Daly
Hi Moritz and Matthew,

This is an issue with the current release of Debian Squeeze. The
issue is actually a boot-time load order issue. If the pcspkr module
is inserted into the kernel too early in the boot process (as it is by
default, at least on my system) the beep becomes the evil buzzing honk
the original reporter complained about. However, if it's inserted
late into the boot process, it's the lovely, beautiful, normal, Lenny
beep.

So, an effective workaround is to insert the following into your
"/etc/rc.local" file:

I just figured this out today, and was really happy to have my normal,
Lenny beep back. This probably means that this bug should be
reassigned, but I have no idea where it should be reassigned.

Thanks for your time,
Nick

I used sylpheed 3.1.0~rc0-1 and GTK/GLib from experimental.

Yeah, I do not suffer crashing since sylpheed 3.1.0-1.
But I do not know that it is really "fixed".

Bug#612703: ampache: disables Apache default site configuration during installation

2011-02-09 Thread Jonathan Wiltshire
Package: ampache
Version: 3.5.4-10
Severity: critical
Justification: breaks unrelated software

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

When Ampache is installed and the user chooses to have it automatically
configure the Apache webserver, Ampache disables the default site configuration
without checking for local changes. This breaks unrelated software that the
administrator has set up in there (for example, I had several Alias statements).

It is not Ampache's job to deconfigure site files. It should install its
configuration in a way that does not disrupt other sites.

This breakage was introduced in 3.5.4-10:

 ampache (3.5.4-10) unstable; urgency=low
 .
   * Made package use a VirtualHost instead of adding alias symlink to
 /etc/apache2/conf.d
   * Added /conf/ApacheAmpache.
   * Updated postinst and postrm to use a2ensite and a2dissite.
   * Updated ampache.install to install ApacheAmpache into
 /etc/apache2/sites-available.

It seems that it crashes at summary_show_queued_msgs(), which
temporarily appends currently received messages on the summary view.

The following warning shows somehow GtkTreeIter is broken at the point.

(sylpheed:3133): Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_tree_store_get_value: assertion
`VALID_ITER (iter, tree_store)' failed

Can you rerun sylpheed with --debug option?

  $ gdb sylpheed

It may be x86-64 specific, or depends on GTK+ version?
(I haven't get any crashes similar to this yet with x86 systems.)

It has only stopped for non-UTF-8 locales. Using UTF-8 locales, it
works at least in oldstable (Lenny, 4.3.6-6) and Sid (4.3.11-2).

Richard: Do you really wanted to fix a bug reported against
zsh/4.3.0-dev-2-1 to be closed with zsh/3.4.6-7?

You also reported the bug to be found with 4.3.9-1 (which was the
current version in Sid at that time), just to close it a few minutes
later. Without that "found 346119 4.3.9-1" I'd expected the bug to be
fixed in 4.3.9-1 and "3.4.6-7" being some weird typo. Or did this just
go to the wrong bug report?

If this isn't going to get fixed in lenny, then it'd
be nice if a squeeze version, or _some_ version, of

Bug#612349: Patch that mentions release notes

2011-02-09 Thread Karl O. Pinc
Hi,

Attached is a patch that mentions installing firmware.

I've not verified that apt-file is usable or installable
at this point in the upgrade process, but I'm not sure what
else to recommend. I am also presuming that free firmware
is installed automatically, which now that I think of it
is probably not the case.

It would be really nice if the kernel upgrade process
informed the user as to exactly what package should be
installed. Perhaps this bug should be shifted to them?

Bug#612700: please mark tzdata as Multi-Arch: foreign

2011-02-09 Thread Steve Langasek
Package: tzdata
Version: 2011a-1
Severity: minor
Tags: patch
User: ubuntu-de...@lists.ubuntu.com
Usertags: origin-ubuntu natty ubuntu-patch

Hi Clint,

I've just pushed a patch to the tzdata package in Ubuntu to mark the tzdata
binary packages as Multi-Arch: foreign, in compliance with the plan for
multiarch described at . Since
eglibc in Ubuntu depends on tzdata this is somewhat critical-path there;
it's much less so in Debian, but it would still be technically correct for
the package there so I'm forwarding the change on for your consideration -
see attached patch.

Thanks,

Bug#612699: gthumb: inconsistently displays contents of camera

2011-02-09 Thread Steven Sciame
Package: gthumb
Version: 3:2.11.5-4
Severity: important

Sometimes gthumb displays all of the contents of the camera and sometimes
it does not. This worked perfectly in Lenny. I just upgraded to Squeeze.
It seems to work consistently with Open Shotwell Photo Manager.

Also, this may be more suitable for another bug report. When I plug in the
Camera (Kodak Easy Share CX7430), two identical windows pop up informing me
that I just inserted a medium with digital photos. Choose which application
to launch. Plus a third window telling me that, "Unable to mount Kodak

2011-02-09 Thread Paul Wise
Package: icnsutils

As you can see in these two build logs, icns2png fails on armel and

misparsing of the file. Other architectures are fine.

Bug#553672: group stb-admin membership is required to access the system-tools-backends

2011-02-09 Thread Simon Waters
The error:

"The configuration could not be loaded"
"You are not allowed to access the system configuration."

May occur if the user is simply not a member of group "stb-admin" when
attempting to use some entries in the Administration menu in GNOME
(system-tools-backends).

Users wishing to use these tools may also wish to be members of the
group "sudo" as per Squeeze release notes so they are authorised by
their own password rather than root's.

Aspects of these bug reports may be duplicates of this problem, although
at least one report has additional content.

This was noted on a box upgraded from Lenny to Squeeze, which had been
tracking Debian testing before the official release of Squeeze.

Bug#612697: syslinux-themes-debian-squeeze: grey console background

2011-02-09 Thread Robert Edmonds
Package: syslinux-themes-debian-squeeze
Version: 5-1
Severity: wishlist

with the syslinux-themes-debian-squeeze package installed i get a nice
graphical boot screen with extlinux. however, when the system starts to
boot the console has a grey background, with console text in the
traditional grey-on-black which overwrites the grey background.
eventually all of the grey background scrolls off the screen as messages
are written to the console.

would look better if the system booted with the traditional black
background.

attached is an IPKVM screenshot.

Ah OK, that makes sense, it was totally a manual addition from a
by-hand bootstrapping session I'd done earlier, never went through
debconf or anything like that. Looks like that bit was just a problem
I manufactured for my own delight.

Running grub-mkdevicemap didn't help btw.

Downgrading to 1.98+20100804-14 from Squeeze helped, i.e. it seems to be
a regression which had been introduced after 1.98+20100804-14.

I suspect a kfreebsd-only issue, user-tagging it accordingly.

The automatic removal only covered devices that were automatically
added; I felt doing more than that was risky. /dev/md/d0 doesn't sound
like an entry we'd have added automatically. Did you enter that
yourself at some point in the past, or am I missing something?

Bug#577840: Debian Bug report logs - #577840

2011-02-09 Thread Miguel Figueiredo
Hi,

it was released Debian 6.0 'Squeeze' which has a lot of improvements.
I suggest you to report against the current version.

Another suggestion, you can use the minimal netinst image which downloads what
is needed from the internet instead of using a bunch of full CDs.

Bug#612694: ITP: scanmonitord -- scanner button daemon

2011-02-09 Thread Jakub Wilk

Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist
Owner: Jakub Wilk

* Package name: scanmonitord
  Version : 1.2.6
  Upstream Author : Simon Matter
* URL : http://www.invoca.ch/pub/packages/scanmonitord/
* License : GPLv2+
  Programming Lang: C, bash
  Description : scanner button daemon

Scanmonitord is a daemon which runs device monitors on one or more
devices. Every button or sensor event is then evaluated by user
generated action scripts which can itself call whatever system command
they want. For postprocessing scanned images, scanmonitord has the
ability to start image processing scripts as daemons which can automate
additional actions like OCR on scanned images by user defined scripts.

(The above description was copied verbatim from upstream README. The
actual package description will be likely different.)

And why of all people should _I_ be responsible for the debian policy?

If debian can't get it right, I can very well crititise debian for it. My
criticism was always constructive (because I quite plainly said what needs
to be done in this - policy - case and also in this bug case).

Asking me to go and try to fix debian is simply the wrong and lazy way to
do things: it basically says, "I don't care enough".

And if you don't care enough, why do you think you can insult me by
claiming I spread FUD, when I, in fact, back up everything I say? What
gives you the right to criticise me in this discussion when all _you_ do
is spread empty words?

That's what I mean by putting your efforts where your mouth is. You are
quick at criticising others when they complain about debian, but when, oh,
there might be some effort changing things, uh, the others must do it.

It's not my job to propose exact changes to the debian policy. Quite
obviously, I already clearly explained that debian should have a better
policy, but apparently, pointing out the problems and how to solve them is
not enough for you.

And if highly visible cases like the openssl bug can't make debian to
change their ways, what signal does that send to me? If openssl and cron
and e2fsck doesn't wake up debian, what will? me? I don't believe it.

All you do is drag me down from *specific* problems (this and a few other
bugs in debians urxvt) into a generic "if you criticise, you have to fix
the whole of debian".

Not so, wrong construction area.

I am happy maintaining my packages in as high a quality I am able to
give it, and would be happy if debian would do the things they have an
expertise in and I haven't, such as maintaining the debian package.

There's no point in renaming the source package if the -dev package has the same
name. So we need to rename it.

We want a different -dev package anyway, so yeah, we can drop the epoch.

Feel free to commit your packaging to desktop/experimental/libwnck3.

Hi Michael, and thanks for your bugreport,

first, I am hereby forwarding your bugreport to my nice upstream author (Hi

Correct. I'd say it's a hardware database of configuration files. Given the
nature of the problem usb-modeswitch addresses, it is very convenient to be
able
to debug using real configuration files.

I'm not personally using etckeeper, but I understand the problem.

> Please consider moving those files to /usr/share, or if they are needed
> during boot to /lib/usb-modeswitch.

Note that this solution is implemented as the usb-modeswitch-data-packed
package, which ships a tarball of what lives in /etc/usb-modeswitch.d. Both u-m-
d and u-m-d-packed conflict with eachother, as they both ship the udev rules
file (/lib/udev/rules.d/40-usb_modeswitch.rules).

The idea behind providing both packages is to allow "small disk impact under
/usr" xor "configuration files for debugging".

> If there really is a need for a user to overwrite certain settings, make

Since version 1.1.4, the usb-modeswitch.tcl script in package usb-modeswitch
will give precedence to database entries found in the /usr/share/usb-
modeswitch/configPack.tar.gz, without trying to fallback to /etc/usb-
modeswitch.d/ entries (which cannot be present at the same time due to
Conflicts
anyway).

I would be inclined to say that your bugreport is already addressed by the usb-
modeswitch-data-packed package, but I'll let you comment on that.

Cheers,

to /lib/usb-modeswitch.

This is already on the ToDo list for the next version of usb-modeswitch as it
was discussed with the Debian package maintainer. I'm planning the release to be
out in two weeks or so. The location of the data files has to be reflected in
the program obviously.

The files might in fact be needed during boot.

I'm awfully sorry. :'(

I had manually upgraded ipython to version 10.1 and reverting back to the
official version 10 Debian package makes the problem disappear. So this bug
may be closed.

Nevertheless, when you plan to upgrade ipython, I can test, if you need, an
experimental package on my system to see if the problem persists.

Ok, then propose to change that point of the Debian policy, I fully
agree that it should be a strong requirement.

Resent-From: Michael Prokop

Package: pacemaker
Version: 1.0.9.1+hg15626-1
Severity: minor

When running something like:

  # crm configure primitive ssh-stonith stonith:ssh params hostlist="$HOSTS" op
monitor interval=60s
  [...]

you'll notice:

WARNING: ssh-stonith: default timeout 20s for start is smaller than the
advised 60
WARNING: ssh-stonith: default timeout 20s for monitor_0 is smaller than the
advised 60

If the advised timeout is 60 then either the default timeout should
be >=60, the advised timeout should be revised to 20s or it
shouldn't warn the user about it, IMHO.

Yeah, did you read it? It says you don't need to, you should.

Contrast this with e.g. fedora's upstream policy, which makes NOT sending
upstream patches an exceptional case, and even discourages patches that
deviate from upstream altogether, except in grave cases (such as grave
security problems).

If you wanted to show that debian clearly doesn't care much, you
succeeded.

It's definitely the case for projects where I have been looking at. Your

And it is *not* a violation of the policy not to, or in otehr words, there is
no debian policy that patches must be sent upstream.

Well, I personally hate redhat (as a distro), and I feel fedora might not
do perfectly, but at leats in the cases where I looked at (that includes
rxvt-unicode), they have always been responsive, send issues upstream,
talked to upstream, and tried to work on solutions to problems, of there
have been many.

So, I use debian, I think it's technologically better than fedora, I am
not a fan of fedora, but all the maintainers I have talked to do a good
job of *maintaining* their packges, without overstepping heir bounds and
assuming they are the better coders and hack around in their packages.

I can't say the same for debian, neither for my projects nor for projects I
have reported e.g. bugs on, at leats for the majority.

There are some exceptional debian maintainers that are genuinely
interested in moving forward, and it is a pleasure to work with them.

Most of them are an arrogant bunch who know everything better, even when
they clearly don't understand even the basics of what they are doing.

Thats my personal experience.

Well, you broguht it up. I was limiting myself to howd ebian mistreated
rxvt-unicode in the past, which is on-topic. For some reaosn you felt
you need to drag it down into some idiotic flaming contest of FUD about
debian.

> There is a misunderstanding then: saying "Debian" definitely means the

When I talk about how debian is mistreating some of my packages then
I mean the whole of debian who ever cared, obviously. There have been
multiple maintainer,s the first one was, sorry to say so, a total asshole,
it was completely impossible to discuss bugs with him. This one, I
thoughtz, was quite nice and reasonable, until he stopped talking to me
and fell back into the barbarian debian ways of breaking rxvt-unicode
without a second thought or notice.

It's endemic, this maintainer is by far a smaller problem then the
previous one, which applied broken patch after broken patch, removed our
faq entry that politely asked to report to the dbeian bugtracker and
generally acted liek a jerk.

That does not mean that other maintainers do better.

I am a latecomer to debian, maybe, only getting interested in debian 10
years ago or so, but I am very active in reporting bugs about software
packages, and have a number of my software packages in debian as well.

I also read the bugtracker a lot, and see how others are treated.

Maybe 10 years ago it was nicer - maintai

Bug#612574: tortoisehg-nautilus: Usability with nautilus 2.91.7

I am willing to help, but I am running nautilus from unstable, so I need
your help to figure it out what we need to do.

First of all, the tortoisehg-nautilus is just a python file installed as
/usr/lib/nautilus/extensions-2.0/python/nautilus-thg.py

So my question is:
-what is changing with nautilus 2.91? Does it need to be deployed in
another directory? If yes, which one?

Once you have the answer to this question, try to copy the file manually
there. Is it working?
Or do we need upstream to explicitly support 2.91?

Thanks for reporting this bug and for your help,
Ludovico

It already does. From line 21 of debian/control:

Bug#612692: grub-setup segfaults when presented with partitioned raid

2011-02-09 Thread Jamie Heilman
Package: grub-pc
Version: 1.99~rc1-2

root@cucamonga:/etc/grub.d# grub-setup --directory=/boot/grub
--device-map=/boot/grub/device.map /dev/md/d0
Invalid device `/dev/md/d0'.
Segmentation fault

I think that was supposed to show usage ... not segfault. Anyhow, it
appears that device.map isn't supposed to be allowed to contain md
devices anymore... judging by the changelog...

grub2 (1.99~20101210-2) experimental; urgency=low

  * Automatically remove MD devices from device.map on upgrade, since the
BIOS cannot read from these and including them in device.map will break
GRUB's ability to read from such devices (LP: #690030).

...but that didn't happen when I upgraded to this version from
1.98+20100804-14 so it looks like something is broken there. (I still
had nothing but (hd0) /dev/md/d0 in my map.) Once I fixed up my
device.map manually, grub-setup works OK (I use msdos partitions on d0,
which probably explains why I don't see bug 612518).

needs of the Debian system, they should be sent to the upstream
authors in whatever form they prefer so as to be included in the
 upstream version of the package.

That's definitely not the case for the areas where I've been having a
look at: Xorg, kernel, accessibility, to name a few.

Sure, there are black sheeps. But don't make that a generic point,
i.e. FUD.

It *is* in the policy.

In the reality I have seen so far I haven't had seen so many
issues. Sure, there are examples of issues. Are there really _no_ such
examples in Fedora?!

There is a misunderstanding then: saying "Debian" definitely means the
whole Debian. If you wanted to mean the Debian maintainer of rxvt, then
say "the Debian maintainer".

Again, the problem at stake here is with the maintainer, not with Debian.

Bug#605090: Updated patch

2011-02-09 Thread Kees Cook
On Wed, Feb 09, 2011 at 06:51:02PM +0100, maximilian attems wrote:
> Be more precise in what SELinux can't do for you?

SELinux is only MAC. It attempts to protect userspace from userspace. From
my view, the bulk of the benefits in grsec and PaX are protecting the
kernel from userspace. Take for example the case of syscalls. There
is nothing in a MAC that can filter syscalls, so if there is a
new vulnerability in a syscall, you might get attacked, and no MAC
can stop it. PaX adds a lot of internal hardening to mitigate most
kernel exploitation attempts (for example, actually enforcing the
kernel/userspace memory segmentation so that kernel code can't be
tricked into running code from a userspace mapping, setting function
pointers and call tables read-only so that an arbitrary write isn't
instantly turned into a root-escalation, hiding the location of kernel
addresses to frustrate attacks that need to find in-kernel offsets,
actually checking the size of copy_to/from_user work to avoid overflows,
the list goes on and on).

> (Emulating NX for bad hardware doesn't count these days).

Why not? A giant amount of hardware lacks NX, and is still in active use,
especially for Debian (people are turning more to Debian as other distros
move their minimum instruction set requirements higher and higher).

Bug#612690: Please move data files to /lib/ or /usr/share

2011-02-09 Thread Michael Biebl
Package: usb-modeswitch-data
Version: 20101222-3
Severity: normal

Hi,

usb-modeswitch-data ships around 150 small files in
/etc/usb_modeswitch.d/ which don't look like configuration files at all, but
more like a hardware database.
In addition if you use tools like etckeeper having a constantly changing
usb-modeswitch-data is painful.

Please consider moving those files to /usr/share, or if they are needed during
boot
to /lib/usb-modeswitch.

If there really is a need for a user to overwrite certain settings, make
it possible, that a file can be copied from /usr/share to files in /etc
taking preference.

Cheers,
Michael

Bug#612689: gparted does not run on KDE

2011-02-09 Thread Nick Niktaris
Package: gparted
Version: 0.7.0-1
Severity: normal
Tags: squeeze

Gparted does not depend on kdesudo. As a result if a user tries to run
it on a KDE system gparted will not work. Running it with kdesudo
resolves the problem but is not suggested by the package.
Installing gksu on a KDE system has no meaning.
IMO gparted should depend on gksu or kdesudo (if nothing else is broken)

Bug#612688: sleepd: Problem with ACPI backend

2011-02-09 Thread gregor herrmann
Package: sleepd
Version: 2.04
Severity: normal

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-

The ACPI backend for --battery doesn't work with newer kernels
(experienced with 2.6.37 from experimental); if I read acpi.c
correctly, it looks for /proc/acpi/{ac_adapter,battery}, and those
paths seem to have vanished.

(The fallback on hal doesn't really help if hal isn't installed but
it still produces lots of DBUS errors; without failing on startup.)

Bug#612687: emacs23-nox: sudo emacs immediately gets stopped on kfreebsd-i386

2011-02-09 Thread Timo Juhani Lindfors
Package: emacs23-nox
Version: 23.2+1-7
Severity: normal

Steps to reproduce:
1) sudo emacs -nw -q --no-splash -f kill-emacs

Expected results:
1) emacs starts as root and quits immediately

Actual results:
1) emacs is immediately stopped and won't continue even with fg:

lindi@debian:~$ sudo emacs -nw -q --no-splash -f kill-emacs

More info:
1) "emacs -nw -q --no-splash -f kill-emacs" without "sudo" works.
2) "sudo bash" and then "emacs -nw -q --no-splash -f kill-emacs" works.
3) this used to work a few months ago
4) process list shows:

lindi@debian:~$ ps --forest -eo pid,user,state,cmd | grep -B1 -A2 sud[o]

 1385 root T | \_ emacs -nw -q --no-splash -f kill-emacs

5) I tried to save the syscalls with

lindi@debian:~$ sudo ktrace -f ktrace.out -d -p $$
lindi@debian:~$ sudo emacs -nw -q --no-splash -f kill-emacs

[1]+ Stopped sudo emacs -nw -q --no-splash -f kill-emacs
lindi@debian:~$ sudo ktrace -c -p $$
lindi@debian:~$ sudo kdump -f ktrace.out > sudo-emacs1.ktrace

and attached "sudo-emacs1.ktrace.xz" but it unfortunately does not
seem to be following forks fully despite "-d".

6) "sudo vi" works
7) "sudo top" works

The immediate cause is:

araminta:/etc/news# grep GETFTP /usr/lib/news/innshellvars
GETFTP='${exec_prefix}/bin/simpleftp'

I suggest that you put the path to your wget program here.

Note to Marco: maybe configure.ac needs being changed so as not to set
the GETFTP variable to simpleftp at configure time.

AC_PATH_PROGS([PATH_GETFTP], [wget ncftpget ncftp], [$bindir/simpleftp])

simpleftp is removed after "make install" in the Debian rules file.

Bug#612685: gnome-desktop-environment depends on gnome-bluetooth ???

2011-02-09 Thread Andrew T. Young
Package: gnome-desktop-environment
Severity: normal

After the recent upgrade, I found the machine infested with "bluez" and
various bluetooth libraries. I believe this is a side-effect of the
decision to drag in everything under "Recommends:". In my case, I
had a few pieces of an old gnome desktop setup; and I suspect that one
of those pieces initiated a cascade of dependencies that caused the
bluetooth stuff to be installed automatically.

I have cleaned out most of the offending packages. But it seems absurd
to me that gnome-desktop-environment *depends* on gnome-bluetooth.
You ought to at least check to see whether the necessary hardware is
present before installing such stuff.

This 10-year-old Pentium III box certainly does not have bluetooth
hardware in it. I should add that (believing that computers should be
seen and not heard) I have no sound enabled, and no speakers.

Bug#607842: Fw: KDE Oxygen Logo license

2011-02-09 Thread Francesco Poli
Hi,
I have recently received a reply from Adriaan de Groot, currently vice
president of the KDE e.V. board of directors.

His kind reply (publicly disclosed below, with his permission) does not
answer all the unsolved questions, but, at least, confirms that the
LGPL version is 2.1 and explains that the original author is (probably)
Nuno Pinheiro.

Adriaan put me in contact with Nuno: hopefully, all the remaining
uncertainties may be sorted out... Please, stay tuned! :-)

You are right, thanks for the hint. Fix is on the way.

I think it must do this for the default setup. It is easy to provide a
different configuration file for someone, who wishes to do a special setup and
knows what he is doing.

Bug#611826: Fixed after upgrading libvte-common and libvte9 to same version (0.27.4-1)

2011-02-09 Thread Matheus Gaudencio do Rêgo
I upgraded my system and only the libvte-common new version was
installed (without upgrading libvte9). I got this same error message
while trying to run XFCE4-terminal. Fixed after upgrading libvte9 to
0.27.4-1 (the same version of my libvte-common).

Try to upgrade libvte-common to 0.27.4-1 and see if this problem persists.

Also.. The libvte9 package probably should specify the libvte-common
version required...

Sounds interesting. I don't think that would work here, since that
makes the upstream branch branch from current HEAD, no?

I suspect this particular bug (user confusion trying import-dsc for
the first time) might be better solved with something like the following.
The help string is stolen from git-import-orig. Probably the message
should go in a module to simplify maintenance but I'm not sure which
one --- gbp.config, maybe?

Thanks for a reminder.

It may be that I am failing to understand the documentation and examples
on the web, but zenity --notification --listen never quits and does not
remove its icon from the notification area

What I did:

$ ( sleep 2; echo "message: hello world" ; sleep 3) | zenity --notification
--listen

What happened:

A red warning sign is added to the notification area. After two seconds
a bubble pops up to say "hello world". After a few more seconds it goes away
but the notification area icon remain onscreen indefinitely and I never
get my shell prompt back

What I expected to happen:

I expected the command to terminate and remove its notification area icon
after 5 seconds from the time I pressed Return

The parameter parsing looks like a bug to me. It works as expected
in the interactive shell but when being invoked directly in one
single command from "outside" it complains with above mentioned
"ERROR: ssh-stonith: parameter [...] does not exist" message which
is misleading. JFTR: when accepting through "Do you still want to

IMHO it's not relevent for the installation, it's a post-

Bug#612681: x11-common: treat empty session names silently as default session

2011-02-09 Thread Malte S. Stretz
Package: x11-common
Version: 1:7.5+6ubuntu3
Severity: wishlist
Tags: patch

When I upgraded to KDE 4.6.0 recently, some weird bug in kdm (I guess, haven't
had the time to research further) started Xsession with an empty first
argument. This resulted in the message 'Xsession: unable to launch "" X
session --- "" not found; falling back to default session.' My suggestion is to
interpret an empty first argument (which will of course never work as a session
manager) the same as no arguments and just silently fall back to the default
session. The rationale is that the user who is confronted with such a behaviour
can't really do anything about it.

The original bug was reported on launchpad at
but I forwarded it here since this is an
unmodified file from Debian.

I'll attach two patches against 20x11-common_process-args; the first is a non-
intrusive solution and the second refactors away the outer case since it is
actually not needed.

Bug#612680: dbus-x11: X11 started from text console, dbus-launch terminates dbus-daemon if text console is used

2011-02-09 Thread Tilmann Böß

Package: dbus-x11
Version: 1.2.24-4
Severity: normal
Tags: squeeze

I start X11 from a text console using a small wrapper "startx-wrapper"
(without the traps, X11 freezes when switching to the console and
back to X11):

  #!/bin/bash
trap '' HUP INT TSTP TTIN TTOU QUIT
  shopt -u huponexit
  startx $@

Start X11:

 ./startx-wrapper -- :1 > X.log 2>&1 &

Running dbus processes ( ps -fu root | egrep '[P]ID|[d]bus-' ):

UIDPID PPID C STIME TTY TIME CMD
root 11236 11225 0 22:14 tty2 00:00:00 /usr/bin/ck-launch-session
/usr/bin/dbus-launch --exit-with-session /usr/bin/fvwm2
root 11285 1 0 22:14 tty2 00:00:00 /usr/bin/dbus-launch
--exit-with-session /usr/bin/fvwm2
root 11286 1 0 22:14 ?00:00:00 /usr/bin/dbus-daemon --fork
--print-pid 5 --print-address 7 --session

Now I switch to to the text console, do just anything (a single CR suffices)
and the dbus-daemon is terminated by the babysitter process dbus-launch:

UIDPID PPID C STIME TTY TIME CMD
root 11236 11225 0 22:14 tty2 00:00:00 /usr/bin/ck-launch-session
/usr/bin/dbus-launch --exit-with-session /usr/bin/fvwm2

Simultaneous output of "dbus-monitor":
signal sender=org.freedesktop.DBus -> dest=:1.0 serial=2
path=/org/freedesktop/DBus; interface=org.freedesktop.DBus; member=NameAcquired
 string ":1.0"
method call sender=:1.0 -> dest=org.freedesktop.DBus serial=3
path=/org/freedesktop/DBus; interface=org.freedesktop.DBus; member=AddMatch
 string "type='method_call'"
method call sender=:1.0 -> dest=org.freedesktop.DBus serial=4
path=/org/freedesktop/DBus; interface=org.freedesktop.DBus; member=AddMatch
 string "type='method_return'"
method call sender=:1.0 -> dest=org.freedesktop.DBus serial=5
path=/org/freedesktop/DBus; interface=org.freedesktop.DBus; member=AddMatch
 string "type='error'"
signal sender=(null sender) -> dest=(null destination) serial=0
path=/org/freedesktop/DBus/Local; interface=org.freedesktop.DBus.Local;
member=Disconnected

IMHO, dbus-launch should not terminate dbus-daemon in this case. It should
ignore input from the TTY.

As a workaround, I modified /etc/X11/Xsession.d/75dbus_dbus-launch and deleted
the option --exit-with-session of dbus-launch, but this has the undesired
side effect that dbus-daemon runs on forever even if the X11 session is
terminated.

For the superuser, I can use the command detachtty around startx, but this
does not work for an unprivileged user.

I did not notice such a problem before in Lenny.

Regards,
 Tilmann

Accept "<<>>", "<<<>>>", and so forth as equivalent to "<>" for
the purposes of refusing to send error returns. Suggested

Thanks for the additional information!

I am reassigning the bug report to the (hopefully) appropriate package.
I hope the bug can be fixed soon...

Bye.

Bug#612678: default timeout smaller than the advised one - results in WARNING message

2011-02-09 Thread Michael Prokop
Package: pacemaker
Version: 1.0.9.1+hg15626-1
Severity: minor

When running something like:

  # crm configure primitive ssh-stonith stonith:ssh params hostlist="$HOSTS" op
monitor interval=60s
  [...]

you'll notice:

WARNING: ssh-stonith: default timeout 20s for start is smaller than the
advised 60
WARNING: ssh-stonith: default timeout 20s for monitor_0 is smaller than the
advised 60

If the advised timeout is 60 then either the default timeout should
be >=60, the advised timeout should be revised to 20s or it
shouldn't warn the user about it, IMHO.

regards,
-mika-

Bug#431914: not a problem in sudo-ldap itself

2011-02-09 Thread Bdale Garbee
reassign 431914 libldap-2.4-2
thanks

The sudo-ldap package itself does not provide or modify any confirmation
information in /etc/ldap/ldap.conf. That file is apparently provided by
libldap-2.4-2.

Passing this bug to the Debian OpenLDAP Maintainers for review and/or action.

Bdale
