Bug#328906: Docs: how to config 'dwww' so index isn't Internet readable?
Package: dwww Version: 1.9.25 Severity: wishlist This bug report may be too long. If so, just page down to the 2nd to last paragraph for a summary. A few years ago, wanting a better interface to Debians docs, I installed a bunch of frontends like 'dwww', 'dhelp', 'gtkman', etc. to try 'em out. Like many naive users, I wasn't as interested in how these programs worked as much whether they made looking things up easier. At which 'dwww' succeeds with flying colors. I had no prior need for, (or interest in administering), a web server and presumed that if 'dwww' needed it behind the scenes, then so be it. It seems that 'dwww' puts its main page online so anybody who looks at my IP address can read all the many docs 'dwww' offers. A friend who lives a few towns away pointed this out a while back; it's never caused any problem, or none I've noticed -- and on a dialup sudden bandwidth changes are obvious. Off the top of my head I can think of two reasons why 'dwww' users might not want their docs public. 1) Loss of bandwidth if they're accessed. 2) Access to '/usr/share/doc' shows what programs a system has installed. The changelogs in '/usr/share/doc' show what version a given installed package is. So a miscreant might look for insecure program versions, which could then be exploited. But giving 'dwww' the benefit of the doubt, suppose we consider public docs a feature, not a bug**. So how does one turn this feature off? The docs in 'dwww' that I've read don't seem to say, nor do they caution users about it. (**it's ideal for file servers.) If 'dwww' is dependent on the web server to turn this off, then it would be nice to have a few pointers in the docs about how to instruct a web server to stop making 'dwww' docs world readable. If it turns out that web servers can't reliably do this; and that yet another external program, perhaps a firewall, is needed, then the 'dwww' docs might suggest using one, and maybe some security increasing package might be added to the 'dwww' package's Suggests: field. I'm not sure if this is this is a 'wishlist' bug, (though I wish the docs said more about it), or something more severe. I worry some net-expert might argue: Well users should NEVER run a web server if they don't know what they're doing. But a program like 'dwww' is best appreciated by those novices, they're the ones who need it most. Such a disapproving expert should at least concede that the current 'dwww' docs and package description do not attempt to warn novices away from an otherwise useful interface. The package description seems quite welcoming: Description: Read all on-line documentation with a WWW browser All installed on-line documentation will be served via a local HTTP server. When possible, dwww converts the documentation to HTML. You need to install both a CGI-capable HTTP server and a WWW browser to read the documentation. No mention of security issues there. A local server hardly sounds as though it might be internationally accessible. Summing up, I wish for docs that would explain or suggest how to close the blinds of 'dwww' so the whole online world can't peek in. If this is unfeasible, then 'dwww' should warn novice users of its necessary dangers. Hope this helps... -- System Information: Debian Release: testing/unstable APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable'), (1, 'experimental') Architecture: i386 (i686) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.6.12-1-686 Locale: LANG=C, LC_CTYPE=C (charmap=ANSI_X3.4-1968) (ignored: LC_ALL set to C) Versions of packages dwww depends on: ii apache [httpd-cgi]1.3.33-8 versatile, high-performance HTTP s ii debconf [debconf-2.0] 1.4.58 Debian configuration management sy ii debianutils 2.14.3 Miscellaneous utilities specific t ii doc-base 0.7.18-0.1 utilities to manage online documen ii file 4.12-1 Determines file type using magic ii libc6 2.3.5-6GNU C Library: Shared libraries an ii man-db2.4.3-2The on-line manual pager ii menu 2.1.25 generates programs menu for all me ii perl 5.8.7-5Larry Wall's Practical Extraction ii realpath 1.9.25 Return the canonicalized absolute Versions of packages dwww recommends: ii apt 0.6.41 Advanced front-end for dpkg ii dlocate 0.5-0.1fast alternative to dpkg -L and dp ii info2www 1.2.2.9-23 Read info files with a WWW browser -- debconf information: * dwww/cgiuser: www-data * dwww/cgidir: /usr/lib/cgi-bin * dwww/docrootdir: /var/www * dwww/serverport: 80 * dwww/servername: Arf dwww/index_docs: true dwww/nosuchdir: dwww/nosuchuser: dwww/badport: -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with

I don't think that this is a real security issue because mod_usertrack only uses the cookies for invading user privacy, not for authentication (however, there seems to be one Apache Perl module that uses these cookies for some kind of session ID). The MITRE database seems to disagree, so please check who's right. Thanks. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Bug#328920: xsane resets resolution when switching from grey to color
Package: xsane Version: 0.97-4 Severity: minor When one switches from color to grey modes, the resolution resets to 300dpi. Eg: mode=save set to color set resolution 240 set to grey (resolution is now 300) set resolution 240 (resolution is now 240) set to color (resolution is now 300) set resolution 240 (resolution is now 240) set to grey (resolution is now 300) Indeed, one can continue: set resolution 240 (resolution is now 240) set to grey (resolution is now 300) Ideally, it would have a single common resolution for grey and color (that's my preference), or it would separately remember the resolution of both. Bug#328931: Hard to understand error messages from faulty .rtorrent.rc file
Package: rtorrent Version: 0.3.3-1 Severity: minor Tags: patch I inadvertently put something like: directory=/mytorrents instead of directory = /mytorrents into the ~/.rtorrents.rc file. One thing is that rtorrent _really_ needs the spaces surrounding the = sign, another thing is that the errormessage is really unhelpful: Caught exception: Error parseing option file. I've attached a patch that adds the faulty line to the error message, thus giving the poor user (me in this case) a bit more information about what went wrong. I also fixed the parseing/parsing typo. - Ole-Morten Duesund -- System Information: Debian Release: testing/unstable APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable'), (500, 'testing'), (1, 'experimental') Architecture: i386 (i686) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.6.12-1-k7 Locale: LANG=en_GB, LC_CTYPE=en_GB (charmap=ISO-8859-1) Versions of packages rtorrent depends on: ii libc6 2.3.5-6GNU C Library: Shared libraries an ii libcurl3 7.14.0-5 Multi-protocol file transfer libra ii libgcc1 1:4.0.1-7 GCC support library ii libidn11 0.5.18-1 GNU libidn library, implementation ii libncurses5 5.4-9 Shared libraries for terminal hand ii libsigc++-2.0-0c2 2.0.10-3 type-safe Signal Framework for C++ ii libssl0.9.7 0.9.7g-2 SSL shared libraries ii libstdc++64.0.1-7The GNU Standard C++ Library v3 ii libtorrent5 0.7.3-1a C++ BitTorrent library ii zlib1g1:1.2.3-4 compression library - runtime rtorrent recommends no packages. -- no debconf information diff -ur -x '*.o' orig/rtorrent-0.3.3/src/option_file.cc rtorrent-0.3.3/src/option_file.cc --- orig/rtorrent-0.3.3/src/option_file.cc 2005-09-02 21:16:13.0 +0200 +++ rtorrent-0.3.3/src/option_file.cc 2005-09-18 11:23:07.0 +0200 @@ -68,8 +68,10 @@ // Check for empty lines, and options within abc. if ((result = std::sscanf(line, %63s = \%511[^\]s, key, opt)) != 2 (result = std::sscanf(line, %63s = %511s, key, opt)) != 2 - result == 1) -throw std::runtime_error(Error parseing option file.); + result == 1) { + std::string errormsg = Error parsing option file.\n:\t + std::string(line); + throw std::runtime_error(errormsg); + } if (opt[0] == '' opt[1] == '') opt[0] = '\0';

Bug#328858: Installation report
Hi Garrett Please don't reply to me in private. All information belonging to this problem should go to your installation-reports bug which is reached with [EMAIL PROTECTED] as email address. Garrett Guillotte wrote: Christian, 1) I will try to switch to consoles 3 and 4 during the default install when I can get a chance - I am at work now. OK, we'll see then. 2) I did try to install via expert26, and was able to partition the hard drive with no problems. Install then failed after configuring apt, while trying to download and install packages. I could properly configure apt; after selecting a mirror (kernel.org and debian.org were both successful, using both http and ftp), apt would successfully retrieve package and depenency lists. However, when proceeding to the next step - selecting what package sets I wanted to install, which were by default the desktop environment and basic system - apt would stall. It would display four lines about retreiving lists, all followed by done, then stall for about five seconds. Then, it would produce an error message in the console that stayed on screen for a fraction of a second - too briefly to read, but I did see something to do with a connection error. However, that doesn't make much sense, as there were no connection errors retreiving package and dependency lists from the same servers. The console error would be replaced by a message from the installer telling me to try again, or to continue with broken packages. Internet access is fine on that computer while running other operating systems, and is fine on other computers on the same network. If I select any package sets and the option to manually select packages, the same stall occurs. If I only select the option to manually choose packages, deselecting all other options on the list, aptitude loads with no packages selected, and I'm not sure what packages I need to choose to have a working, basic desktop system. So you got problems in 2nd stage with 2.6 packages downloading. Did you use a mirror listed in [1]? It's not necessarily a problem on your side. It could also be an archive problem (perhaps a missing package), but I didn't hear anything like that on the lists. Could you check your /var/log/* files for errors too? Bug#328180: flac: FTBFS on m68k
Hi, On mar, sep 13, 2005, Nathanael Nerode wrote: You could try building at a lower optimization level (than -O3), or without one or more of the fancy -f options used. Incidentally, the options line passed to GCC is really stupid, containing wonders like '-finline-functions ... -fno-inline-functions ...'. You could also try building with gcc 3.4. Just a note to add that I don't think building with gcc 3.4 is an option since the library has been C++ transitionned explicitely to permit linking with other apps built with gcc 4 and the new C++ ABI. If -O3 is used, it really should be removed as this is said to not only ICE on m68k but also cause silent breakage in i386. Bye, -- Loïc Minier [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Bug#328940: apply patch for Q_EXPORT macro and gcc's -fvisibility ?
Package: libqt3-headers Version: 3:3.3.5-1 Severity: wishlist It would be nice to apply the patch provided at http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=109386 It adds support for -fvisibility for gcc 4.x for the Q_EXPORT macro. Bug#250817: debian bug 250817 - with patch
Hi! In debian bug #250817, Charles C. Fu claims: authldaplib.c has an error in the placement of a parenthesis following calls to ldap_search_st, which causes ldaperror to be passed the result of a comparison instead of an error code, which often causes authdaemond to terminate processing of the authmodulelist (from authdaemonrc) instead of trying the next auth module. The bug report is at: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=250817 I have attached a patch against cvs. Note that I didn't try to compile with this patch, I just forward-ported what was in the original patch, which seems obvious to me. Bug#318800: muine: should recommend gstreamer0.8-mad
reassign 318800 gstreamer0.8-misc thanks Hi, On dim, jui 17, 2005, Peter De Wachter wrote: The muine package should recommend (or even require) relevant gstreamer plugins such as gstreamer0.8-mad, gstreamer0.8-flac and gstreamer0.8-faad. Right now an out-of-the-box install of muine gives an useless error message when you try to play an MP3 (it didn't even mention gstreamer). Muine uses a GStreamer plugin and element called playbin which does the actual task ok playing. This is shipped in gstreamer0.8-misc, but it might have to be shipped in gstreamer0.8-playbin; in both cases, the package shipping the playbin element should depend or recommend elements enabling its correct behavior. Hence, I'm reassigning this bug to GStreamer. Bye, -- Loïc Minier [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Bug#325318: sid target for pbuilder

The FAQ for pbuilder 'pbuilder create fails' states There are people who occasionally backport debootstrap to stable versions; hunt for them. Very true. I actually had some time recently to start using pbuilder again. I think we can use pbuilder in unstable as is because this is mostly shell code. But I realized cdebootstrap is the package which really needs to be backported. I created local packages of cdebootstrap and pbuilder in sarge stable anyway. It looks there seem to be no issue so far. One trap was local configuration file, ~/.pbuilderrc for me. With your switch to cdebootstrap, now we need to apply the same change as you made to the default configuration file. Bug#328949: ia32-libs needs update to make locales work
Package: ia32-libs Version: 1.4 The libc6 version shipped with ia32-libs is 2.3.2, while the libc6 version in debian/etch is 2.3.5. This causes problems with locales and 32-bit programs, because they try to access /usr/lib/locale/locale-archive, which seems to have an incompatible format. I noticed the problem when I tried to install Intels ICC compiler, which needs a correct locale to work. This problem can also be reproduced by running a 32-bit locale command. I solved it by upgrading the 32-bit libc to 2.3.5. Please consider to update ia32-libs to libc6-2.3.5! Marc -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Bug#11286: fvwm95: Still seeing this bug (sorta)
Package: fvwm95 Version: 2.0.43ba-22 Followup-For: Bug #11286 I'm not using the TaskBar anymore these days as I find it redundant with the left and right clicks on the root window. But for the purpose of revisiting this bug I reenabled it and played with it a bit. Note that my TaskBar is configured to 'auto-hide', which I believe is the default, and seems to have a lot to do with the problems below. Simply forking xterms did not cause the TaskBar to crash or enter an infinite loop. However: * with 28 or more open windows, the TaskBar pops up as if it had two rows, but still displays only one line. Resizing it manually fixes the problem, but it reappears as soon as you resize it back to only one line. The same happens with three, four and more rows as more windows are open. * I got it to get into an infinite loop twice where it did not react any more and used all the CPU. Once was with as little as about 30 windows, and the other time was with a few hundred. I'm not sure what triggered the infinite loop in either case. It might happen when it tries to hide/unhide. In any case, this looks very much like bug #40192: Fvwm95-TaskBar eating CPU. * I also got it twice in a situation where it decided to hide and would not pop up again. Once I managed to grab it and resize it to a full 8 rows and got it back to life. The second time resizing had no effect and I had to give up. -- System Information: Debian Release: testing/unstable APT prefers testing APT policy: (500, 'testing'), (500, 'stable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.6.13.1apm Locale: LANG=C, LC_CTYPE=C (charmap=ANSI_X3.4-1968) Versions of packages fvwm95 depends on: ii libc6 2.3.5-6GNU C Library: Shared libraries an ii libreadline4 4.3-15 GNU readline and history libraries ii libx11-6 6.8.2.dfsg.1-6 X Window System protocol client li ii libxext6 6.8.2.dfsg.1-6 X Window System miscellaneous exte ii libxpm4 6.8.2.dfsg.1-6 X pixmap library ii xlibs 6.8.2.dfsg.1-6 X Window System client libraries m Versions of packages fvwm95 recommends: ii fvwm95-icons 2.0.43ba-22Win95ish icons for X ii menu 2.1.25 generates programs menu for all me ii xbase-clients [xcontrib] 6.8.2.dfsg.1-6 miscellaneous X clients ii xterm 6.8.2.dfsg.1-6 X terminal emulator -- no debconf information -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#265881: Patch for colour output on current date for both ncal and cal.
I have a patch to output the current date in red (by default; configurable via environment variable) for both ncal and cal. The patch is not the cleanest, and it does things other than just colour (like implements -3 for ncal (rotated version), and slightly changes the layout of ncal). If there is sufficient interest, I may try to split the patch into more logical units, but this could be difficult, and if there is no interest, I won't bother :) Has been tested for a few months now; seems to work well for all combinations of supported options. TODO: Some of the code was stolen via grep's colour handling. We should also check whether we are outputting to a tty or not just as grep does, but I want to implement the command line style of grep's colour settings, and this requires getlongopt() -- something which ncal doesn't yet use, and I don't want to break any compatibility until I get feedback (and I don't yet know how to use getlongopt :) TOCHECK: Man page has been updated, but since I don't know troff very well, the text highlighting of NCAL_COLOR is probably wrong. Default is not to print in colour. If printing to a tty, should the default *be* colour? -- TimC If the plural of moose is meese the singular of sheep must be shoop. --Hetta on RHODIndex: ncal.1 === RCS file: /home/ssi/tconnors/cvsroot/bin/ncal.src/ncal.1,v retrieving revision 1.1 retrieving revision 1.3 diff -u -b -r1.1 -r1.3 --- ncal.1 21 Aug 2005 11:15:16 - 1.1 +++ ncal.1 9 Sep 2005 05:02:04 - 1.3 @@ -33,20 +33,20 @@ .Nd displays a calendar and the date of easter .Sh SYNOPSIS .Nm -.Op Fl 3jmy +.Op Fl 3jmyc .Oo .Op Ar month .Ar year .Oc .Nm ncal -.Op Fl jJpwy +.Op Fl 3jJpwyc .Op Fl s Ar country_code .Oo .Op Ar month .Ar year .Oc .Nm ncal -.Op Fl Jeo +.Op Fl Jeoc .Op Ar year .Sh DESCRIPTION The @@ -63,15 +63,16 @@ .Bl -tag -width indent .It Fl 3 Print the previous month, the current month, and the next month all on one row. -This flag will only work if you are not displaying Julian days (see -.Fl J -below). .It Fl J Display Julian Calendar, if combined with the .Fl e option, display date of easter according to the Julian Calendar. .It Fl e Display date of easter (for western churches). +.It Fl c +Highlight current date if in current view, using +.Nm NCAL_COLOR +environment variable, if defined (defaults to 01;31 for bright red). .It Fl m Print a calendar where Monday is the first day of the week, as opposed to Sunday. Just a note to add that I don't think building with gcc 3.4 is an option since the library has been C++ transitionned explicitely to permit linking with other apps built with gcc 4 and the new C++ ABI. gcc-3.4 is ABI-compatible with gcc-4.0. I thought so ;-) Experienced the same myself :-P I believe that for debian-installer use a different template needs to be written that probes less and instead statically includes a bunch of modules. I have no experience in this, so if you want to play with that, Sven, then you are more than welcome. you mean, how to detect the stuff during d-i run ? I guess a part of that is available, or can easily be made available, from the debconf templates, i will look at this next weekend. Maybe that is what I mean. What I mean is currently yaird only works from an already running 2.6 system with udev installed. So how to get there from an earlier system, from a system without udev installed, and from scratch. ... Eek, yaird is full of perl :/, i am not perl fluent, will see what i can do, my contribution may possibly be more on a higher level, testing out and proposing a method than implementation. Concentrate on the templates. They shouldn't be too perl'ish, I think. The other issue is that we need a standard tool for creating an initrd for d-i, which i belive could be common to yaird, initramfs and d-i ? Could be nice. Do you think in the lines of yaird and initramfs coordinating on a set of debconf questions like MODULES_REQUIRED, MODULES_TRY, ROOT_DEV_DEFAULT? Is there some discussion about this already? Package: debian-policy Version: 3.6.2.1 Severity: normal Tags: patch Hi, the patch below clarifies the difference between Build-Depends and Build-Depends-Indep. Bug#328865: The problem seems to be related not to kernel-package but to C compiler or other tools
I've just stated, that the problem seems to be related rather to C compiler or other tools used to compile the kernel. The same problem occures when I compile the kernel with make bzImage without using kernel-package. It seems, that the kallsyms doesn't work properly with the newest version of gcc (???). Why do you need udev ? Is parsing /sys not enough ? I don't really care all that much about 2.4-2.6 upgrades myself though :) ... Eek, yaird is full of perl :/, i am not perl fluent, will see what i can do, my contribution may possibly be more on a higher level, testing out and proposing a method than implementation. Concentrate on the templates. They shouldn't be too perl'ish, I think. Mmm, i did have a quick look, but didn't find a few good starters : 1) how to find the root directory. 2) where the input stuff is handled. 3) where the disk drivers are parsed. And what is the difference between Debian.cfg and Debian-initrd.cfg ? The other issue is that we need a standard tool for creating an initrd for d-i, which i belive could be common to yaird, initramfs and d-i ? Could be nice. Do you think in the lines of yaird and initramfs coordinating on a set of debconf questions like MODULES_REQUIRED, MODULES_TRY, ROOT_DEV_DEFAULT? Yeah, that would be cool too, but i was more of thinking of a sigle tool, which took a directory and produces either an initramfs or a ext2 or cramfs or whatever initrd. Which would be fully decoupled from what we put in it. Is there some discussion about this already? Maybe even a wiki page about it? Some one the list, but not much i think. The ubuntu guys use initramfs though. Friendly, Sven Luther -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 Hi, Robert, Dear Damyan: I filed that bug report years ago. From your answer, I gather that the situation has changed and the bug has gone away. That's great. However, I don't believe I ever suggested setting default directory permissions to 0777 (at least not without a very good reason). See the second message on bugs.debian.org/189989 From: Roland Gersch [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Correction Date: Thu, 24 Apr 2003 20:26:13 +0200 Hello, on closer inspection, I think permissions 777 on the /var/run/firebird directory would be even better. Otherwise, on a freshly started system, a user cannot access any database. The message above was the reason to comment on 777 permissions in my mail when closing the bug. I didn't want to insult, I just wanted to make a clear statement about 077 permissions. There is general problem with classic-server that needs the user process to be able to write to fbsecurity.fdb and thus forcing all classic clients to be members of firebird group. This is a feature of the classic archetecture and I can't see what can be done about it. I generally use fbclient-linked clients that connect with the server through TCP and althrough this has some performance penalty, it makes me sleep better :-) Best regards, dam - -- Damyan Ivanov 0x9725F63B Creditreform Bulgaria [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.creditreform.bg/ phone: +359(2)928-2611, 929-3993fax: +359(2)920-0994 mob. +359(88)856-6067 ICQ 3028500 [EMAIL PROTECTED]/Gaim -BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE- Version: GnuPG v1.4.1 (GNU/Linux) Comment: Using GnuPG with Thunderbird - http://enigmail.mozdev.org iD8DBQFDLVCuHqjlqpcl9jsRAtKTAJ9WpGU2+kjQc7bfb7j8jcDFkmLTTwCeMf59 yFPT7qmXxDT/YICBQUDuWXA= =CLAZ -END PGP SIGNATURE- -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe.
