The asterisk privacy mode (Dial with option P) records caller
 intros in /usr/share/asterisk/sounds/priv-callerintros . This
violates the FHS and hence Debian policy.

But does asterisk run as root (I hope not)?

Indeed, it does not.

If not, then surely no intros can be written to this directory,

Indeed.

so policy isn't actually being violated --

I hadn't thought of this in this way (that it must _effectively_, from
the package's directory ownerships, be able to write - directory
ownerships can be changed by the administrator, and all that), I must
admit. But it is indeed a consistent reasoning.

it's just a feature that's unavailable to users of the package?

(Unless they manually create
/var/lib/asterisk/sounds/priv-callerintros and symlink
/usr/share/asterisk/sounds/priv-callerintros to it.)

Bug#407188: Laptop gets stuck after sleep

2007-01-19 Thread Moritz Lennert
I've found a solution: the problem was not with acpi-support, but with the
configuration of hibernate. In /etc/hibernate/ram.conf I had to comment
the two lines:

EnableVbetool yes
VbetoolPost yes

Since then it works like a charm.
(I imagine setting the above to no, instead of commenting them has the
same effect).

Bug#407460: USB ethernet interface renamed after installation on NSLU2 which causes the system to be inaccessible

2007-01-19 Thread peter green

However, when booting after the installation, the NPE driver seems to
assume control of the interface name eth0, which causes something to
rename the interface of the USB to ethernet adapter to eth1_rename.
it sounds to me like the built in nic is getting detected first before the USB
to ethernet adaptor, udev should then swap the names back to those used at
install time.

It looks like it is renaming the usb to ethernet to a temporary name (nessacery
for a swap operation) but failing to rename the built in nic for some reason.

Well I suppose it's critical to anyone who runs a network of windows servers

 win2k is nearing it.

Sure...this is why I upgraded the bug from normal to important.but
that still doesn't deserve to be tagged as critical asnothing proves
that this makes the package completely unusable.

Bug#407586: rhythmbox: No support for DAAP smart playlists

2007-01-19 Thread Julien Valroff
Package: rhythmbox
Version: 0.9.7-1
Severity: normal

Hi,

According to upstream developers, rhythmbox is supposed to support DAAP
smart playlists, which is not the case on my machines (one with rb 0.9.6 from
unstable, the other with 0.9.7 from experimental).

This isn't linked to previously reported bug #406688 as I had no smart playlists
before, when rb played songs from my DAAP share.

Banshee displays the playlists and is able to play them (sorry for the
comparison, but
it is the only way I have to check wether my server configuration or rb is
faulty).

Note that I had previously opened #390643[2] on GNOME bugzilla, but as stated
in my
answer, I prefer reporting it against the Debian package, just in case this is
an
issue with the packaging.

Cheers,
Julien

Bug#407582: mozilla-firefox-locale-en-gb: Package being removed before upgrading to iceweasel, preventing transition to iceweasel-l10n-en-gb

2007-01-19 Thread Raphael

Package: mozilla-firefox-locale-en-gb
Version: 2.0.0.1+debian-1
Severity: important

I was about to upgrade to iceweasel (using packages from testing), but
this occurred:

# apt-get dist-upgrade
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree... Done
Calculating upgrade... Done
The following packages will be REMOVED
 firefox-locale-en-gb
The following NEW packages will be installed
 iceweasel iceweasel-dom-inspector
The following packages will be upgraded:
 firefox firefox-dom-inspector kcheckgmail klamav
4 upgraded, 2 newly installed, 1 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
Need to get 0B/10.0MB of archives.
After unpacking 2056kB of additional disk space will be used.
Do you want to continue [Y/n]?

So I had to first install iceweasel iceweasel-dom-inspector, during
this operation firefox-locale-en-gb was removed, so
iceweasel-l10n-en-gb wasn't installed. Which means that the transition
package isn't doing it's work because of some depends, conflicts
problem.

Bug#407584: screen should assume -U if locale is a .UTF-8

2007-01-19 Thread Wesley J. Landaker
Package: screen
Version: 4.0.3-0.2
Severity: wishlist

screen supports UTF-8 great if -U is used. However, it must be specified
on the command line even if the current locale is a .UTF-8 type (e.g.
en_US.UTF-8, etc).

It would be more appropriate for screen to check the locale, and if it's
anything.UTF-8 then it should automatically go into UTF-8 mode.

The -U option would still be useful for forcing UTF-8 mode regardless
of locale; it could probably be extended to have an extra option to turn
UTF-8 off unconditionally in case there are problems. For instance, -U
to turn it always on, -u to turn it always off, and if neither is given,
it's detected from the locale.

If you think this would be useful but need some help implementing it, I
would be happy to provide a patch, as it's pretty simple to do a locale
check if you know how. =)

The default entries look reasonably generic to me.

 My /etc/networks was like this:

and dpkg, while upgrading, suggests that I replace such file by this one:

 default 0.0.0.0
 loopback127.0.0.0
 link-local 169.254.0.0
This does not mean that the default entries are wrong with you, just
that you would like to add your own network to them.

There is also a conflict of interest with debian-installer,
 who created this file.
*If* d-i really creates /etc/networks then we actually have a problem,
but I cannot find it on a newly-installed etch system.
Can somebody authoritatively confirm or deny this?

Hello Christoph

mysql-server5.0 fails to work out of the box. Instead it uses latin1,
something I'm not using on my system. Adding
default-character-set=utf8 to [mysql] in /etc/mysql/my.cnf solves
this problem. I don't know where mysql takes it's default character
set from, if it is not specified, but the debian package should
 respect it's user's settings.

The default character set is compiled in and won't be changed for
reasons of backward-compatibility with existing installations.

At the current point of time in our release cycle I will also not
change something in the default my.cnf that is shipped with mysql.
Probably the default will change to utf8 with MySQL-5.1.

BTW: When changing the defaults you will probably also want to put the
above mentioned option into the [mysqld] block so that it becomes
default for both, clients and the server.

available. On upgrade Iceweasel imported bookmarks, and other per user data
 fine except for searchplugins.

The search box was non-functional after upgrade, and the manage search
plugins feature also unresponsive on requests to get search plugins.

On inspection it has created a new profile .mozilla/$USER/profile random
string, but with no searchplugins directory.

O_o It's the first time I hear about a .mozilla/$USER/profile random string

Hi,

the current version still fails to build on GNU/kFreeBSD.
There are two other issues, both are already in the bug report.

Please use attached patch to fix GNU/kFreeBSD.
It contains addition of !defined (__FreeBSD_kernel__)
in src/chains.c and explict passing --enable-proxy=yes
to configure call in debian/rules. That is all.

Please, could you add that patch into 0.2.24-2.
Many thanks.

Bug#407581: cron.daily/mailscanner has exim4 specific cruft.

2007-01-19 Thread pr-reportbug
Package: mailscanner
Version: 4.57.6-1
Severity: important

/etc/cron.daily/mailscanner:
/etc/cron.daily/mailscanner: line 33: exim4: command not found
/etc/cron.daily/mailscanner: line 36: [: eq: unary operator expected

Two problems here.

1) Script is largely exim4 specific. Logic to determine the MTA in use on the
system should be run prior to MTA specific code.
At current moment, I would suggest adding logic to detect the presence
of exim4 before proceeding with the exim specific portion of the cron.daily
script.

2) Poor quoting of variables in script.

From the script
if [ ! $SPOOLDIR eq $SPOOLDIRDEFAULT ]; then
# and there is the default spool directory
if [ -d $SPOOLDIRDEFAULT ]; then

Should be something of the form
if [ ! $SPOOLDIR eq $SPOOLDIRDEFAULT ]; then
# and there is the default spool directory
if [ -d $SPOOLDIRDEFAULT ]; then

$SPOOLDIR may be the empty string. Without quoting this will
confuse the test builtin ([) in the shell leading to erroneous
results.

It would work - icons get highlighted when the mouse is moved.

In order to call the 4 kB big c_rehash script once in a while,
ca-certificates currently depends on openssl, which provides the
c_rehash script. However, the openssl package is 1.5 MB installed on
i386. Perhaps you can copy this script into ca-certificates and drop the
 dependency on openssl?

Ehr. Of course, c_rehash needs to calculate hashes, and uses the openssl
binary for that. So just copying the script is obviously not enough.
But perhaps certtool from gnutls-bin (installed size: 0.4 MB on i386)
can do the trick as well? If you think it's a good idea to reduce the
size of the dependencies, then I can try to make a c_rehash script that
can work with both the openssl binary and certtool, and then you can
depend on gnutls-bin | openssl, possibly saving 1.1 MB of space.

The only current way for me to solve this is to build the missing
packages. I think we should try to upload for i386 in experimental (at
 least there's an amd64 buildd).

I think it's a waste of time to build the GNOME 2.16 packages by hand
except by interested parties. If a DD happens to he interested and
rebuilds some stuff, he's welcome to upload it of course. But it's
really a waste of DD resources to build GNOME 2.16 manually.

The proper long term solution is to fix sbuild; I wish I had time to
 work on this.

Bug#407571: wget: [CVE-2006-6719] segfaults on too many FTP 220 responses at once

2007-01-19 Thread Axel Beckert
Package: wget
Version: 1.9.1-12, 1.10.2-2
Severity: normal

I was able to reproduce the CVE-2006-6719 (DoS from malicious FTP
server against wget = 1.10.2 by letting it segfault, see
http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CVE-2006-6719) with wget
versions in Sarge, Etch and Sid (Etch and Sid are the same at the
moment of writing).

How to reproduce:

Download the proof of concept perl script from
http://www.milw0rm.com/exploits/2947 then log in as root and start the
script as root (it's easy to understand and harmless, well, except to
wget... ;-). You'll also find a backtrace in the comments at the
beginning of the script.

The login as a user, and start:

  wget --passive-ftp ftp://localhost/bla/fasel

It will segfault.

It's not yet known if this segfault can be exploited to execute some
code with the rights of the wget user (possibly root), so I set the
severity to normal only...

Bug#407577: cdebconf-gtk-udeb: frontend crashes on GoBack from user-setup

2007-01-19 Thread Frans Pop
Package: cdebconf-gtk-udeb
Version: 0.112
Severity: important

While testing the patch for #407205, I ran into a crash in the frontend
after a specific sequence in user-setup. However, the crash is not
related to the patch as I can also reproduce it with the current version
in unstable.

To reproduce:
- start installer at default priority
- proceed until first screen of user-setup (root password + confirmation)
- press enter without filling in any passwords
- error is shown + root password fields again
- select GoBack button = crash, frontend is restarted

I have run the relevant scripts (/var/lib/dpkg/info/user-setup.postinst
and /usr/bin/user-setup-ask) with debugging, but the strange thing is
that it looks like those scripts complete normally and the crash only
happens afterwards.

It is likely that a similar rm -rf of the same directory tree was already

LABEL=TMP   /tmpext3defaults0   2

Are there possible scenarios in which one would like to run extractor.py

Thanks for trying! However there's always some judgment to be made. The
initial bug submitter didn't speak of security risk even though it's clear
that it is a security risk in principle.

So before being definitive on the issue, one always need to know how often
we're exposed to the security risk. And while this information was not
available, you shouldn't have increased the severity.

Anyway, I've prepared updates that I'll upload to unstable and we'll see
with further discussion if the package needs to go to etch or not.

Anyway, it's always good to learn a bit more on every matter, so

must be a subtle problem in the IDE initialization order, depending on

One additional reason, why I do not edit my fstab...

Without problems. (It's easy if you know what NOT to do)

Yes, I agree. But that's also the problem. If you know what not to do,
then it might be possible to work with DIMAP without ever losing mails.
But looking at bugs.kde.org and searching for KMail bugs about mail loss
related to DIMAP reveals another truth: the users are not aware of those
bugs.

We could deliver KMail with DIMAP enabled, but then we'd have to make
sure that every user who's trying to create an DIMAP account is aware of
the risks. And by aware I mean that KMail must proactively provide this
information when trying to create such an account -- not just a file
hidden somewhere under /usr/share/doc. And every existing DIMAP user
should be at least once reminded that DIMAP is potentially unsafe for
production use.

But even if we could provide appropriate warnings, we'd still deliver
buggy and potentially harmful software in Debian stable...

I'd prefer to disable DIMAP completely -- better to cut down a single
feature than to expose our users to the risk of data loss. But that's
just my opinion and I'm not a KDE-maintainer.

Cheers,

Bastian

Bug#407489: python-django: Should also Recommends: python-psycopg2

2007-01-19 Thread Marc Fargas

Didn't see 403761 so surely you can close wontfix and wait until
upstream renames, if it does so.

About all the other requests:

From django-developers:
http://groups.google.com/group/django-developers/browse_frm/thread/2c373f07be38d451/c10c1e2351747c08?lnk=gstq=psycopg2rnum=5hl=en#c10c1e2351747c08
A discussion about why psycopg1 is still recommended and examples that
v1 fails somewhere, as v2 also does (in other places!)

From:
http://groups-beta.google.com/group/django-users/browse_thread/thread/0a27ec05cce9b353
[..]
The only reason to prefer psycopg over
psycopg2 is historical - the API for psycopg2 wasn't finalized until
quite recently, so we didn't recommend using it. However, the psycopg
backend has a few problems with unicode, so I suspect the official
line may soon switch to 'use v2' (probably before Django goes v1.0).
[..]

From the psycopg site (http://initd.org/tracker/psycopg):
PsycopgOne -- the original psycopg 1.1.x (now obsoleted by psycopg 2)

Anyway, feel free to close as wontfix so people don't complain for
another Recommends!

Cheers,
Marc.

python-psycopg has given some trouble in the past with Django, and it's
often recommended to use python-psycopg2 instead.

References ? pointers ? facts ? I never used postgresql with django so I
have no idea.

The package could Recommend both and let the user decide.

See #403761, people are complaining that we recommend too much already.
I'd rather recommend only one python binding per database :-))

If the psycopg2 is the best one, then upstream should rename the db
interface postgresql_psycopg2 to postgresql and postgresql to
postgresql_psycopg1 ... :-)

Bug#407572: RFP: copyfs -- Versioning filesystem for FUSE

2007-01-19 Thread Jeronimo Pellegrini
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist

* Package name: copyfs
  Version : 1.0.1
Upstream Author : Nicolas Vigier [EMAIL PROTECTED] and
Thomas Joubert [EMAIL PROTECTED]
* URL : http://n0x.org/copyfs/
* License : GPL
  Programming Lang: C
Description : Versioning filesystem for FUSE

CopyFS keeps versioned copies of all the changes done to file under its
control. It can be useful for a directory where configuration files
are stored, for example.

CopyFS can be configured to store up to a configurable amount of
previous versions: maximum number of revisions, data size ot data age.

diff is used to store versions instead of keeping a full copy for
each version, so the amount of disk space required is relatively
small.

Bug#407521: Security fix for Django auth

2007-01-19 Thread Raphael Hertzog

 Hi Raphael,

Hi Marc,

 I just read at http://www.us.debian.org/Bugs/Developer.en.html#severities
and took the one that made more sense to me, there the only severity
that talks about security is critical so I took that. I'm not a
bug vodoo, I was just trying to give a hand marking bugs.

Anyway, it's always good to learn a bit more on every matter, so
thanks for the lesson and accept my appologies for messing up your bug
 reports.

Accepted of course. :)

Cheers,

2007-01-19 Thread Braun Gabor
Package: kdvi
Version: 4:3.5.5-2

Kdvi recommends tetex-bin. It should also recommend some texlive packages as
an alternative.

I think that kdvi uses only fonts from the TeX system, so the
texlive-fonts-recommended package might be the right alternative.

Bug#407569: RFP: fusecompress -- transparent filesystem compression using FUSE

2007-01-19 Thread Jeronimo Pellegrini
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist

* Package name: fusecompress
  Version : 0.9.0
Upstream Author : Milan Svoboda [EMAIL PROTECTED]
* URL : http://www.miio.net/fusecompress/
* License : GPL
  Programming Lang: C
Description : transparent filesystem compression using FUSE

FuseCompress provides a mountable Linux filesystem which transparently
compress its content. Files stored in this filesystem are compressed on
the background and Fuse allows to create a transparent interface between
compressed files and user applications.

There is no need for a mount point, so the compressed directory can be
referenced just as it was before.

FuseCompress currently supports lzo, gzip and bzip2 compression.

Hi,

It's not clear whether the altivec detection code is broken or not,
differrent kernels and different kernel configs on different hardware
resulted in mixed success; it seems that it would be best to either
change it to something more reliable (I read that libc is supposed to
provide this type of routines), or to disable it for etch.

Bug#407570: libwww-google-calculator-perl: Missing dependencies

2007-01-19 Thread Gunnar Wolf
Package: libwww-google-calculator-perl
Version: 0.03-2
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

This package depends on the following modules:

  Module Provided by:
  Class::Accessor::Fast  libclass-accessor-perl
  HTML::TokeParser   libhtml-parser-perl
  URIliburi-perl
  WWW::Mechanize libwww-mechanize-perl

Although they are declared as build-dependencies, they are _not_
declared as dependencies, so it's very likely that this package will
be unusable.

I'm preparing an upload, and will send it as soon as this bug gets a number.
