If not, then surely no intros can be written to this directory, Indeed. so policy isn't actually being violated -- I hadn't thought of this in this way (that it must _effectively_, from the package's directory ownerships, be able to write - directory ownerships can be changed by the administrator, and all that), I must admit. But it is indeed a consistent reasoning. it's just a feature that's unavailable to users of the package? I've found a solution: the problem was not with acpi-support, but with the configuration of hibernate. Bug#407460: USB ethernet interface renamed after installation on NSLU2 which causes the system to be inaccessible
However, when booting after the installation, the NPE driver seems to assume control of the interface name eth0, which causes something to rename the interface of the USB to ethernet adapter to eth1_rename. it sounds to me like the built in nic is getting detected first before the USB to ethernet adaptor, udev should then swap the names back to those used at install time. It looks like it is renaming the usb to ethernet to a temporary name (nessacery for a swap operation) but failing to rename the built in nic for some reason.

Bug#407586: rhythmbox: No support for DAAP smart playlists
Package: rhythmbox Version: 0.9.7-1 Severity: normal Hi, According to upstream developers, rhythmbox is supposed to support DAAP smart playlists, which is not the case on my machines (one with rb 0.9.6 from unstable, the other with 0.9.7 from experimental). This isn't linked to previously reported bug #406688 as I had no smart playlists before, when rb played songs from my DAAP share. Banshee displays the playlists and is able to play them (sorry for the comparison, but it is the only way I have to check wether my server configuration or rb is faulty). Note that I had previously opened #390643[2] on GNOME bugzilla, but as stated in my answer, I prefer reporting it against the Debian package, just in case this is an issue with the packaging. It would be more appropriate for screen to check the locale, and if it's anything.UTF-8 then it should automatically go into UTF-8 mode. The -U option would still be useful for forcing UTF-8 mode regardless of locale; it could probably be extended to have an extra option to turn UTF-8 off unconditionally in case there are problems. For instance, -U to turn it always on, -u to turn it always off, and if neither is given, it's detected from the locale. If you think this would be useful but need some help implementing it, I would be happy to provide a patch, as it's pretty simple to do a locale check if you know how. =) -- System Information: Debian Release: 4.0 APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable'), (200, 'experimental') Architecture: i386 (i686) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.6.18-3-k7 Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Versions of packages screen depends on: ii base-passwd 3.5.11 Debian base system master password ii debconf [debconf-2.0] 1.5.11 Debian configuration management sy ii libc6 2.3.6.ds1-10 GNU C Library: Shared libraries ii libncursesw55.5-5Shared libraries for terminal hand ii libpam0g0.79-4 Pluggable Authentication Modules l ii passwd 1:4.0.18.1-6 change and administer password and screen recommends no packages. -- debconf information excluded -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. There is also a conflict of interest with debian-installer, who created this file. *If* d-i really creates /etc/networks then we actually have a problem, but I cannot find it on a newly-installed etch system. Bug#407564: mysql-server-5.0: Unicode fails to work out of the box
severity 407564 wishlist tags 407564 + wontfix stop Hello Christoph mysql-server5.0 fails to work out of the box. Instead it uses latin1, something I'm not using on my system. Adding default-character-set=utf8 to [mysql] in /etc/mysql/my.cnf solves this problem. I don't know where mysql takes it's default character set from, if it is not specified, but the debian package should respect it's user's settings. The default character set is compiled in and won't be changed for reasons of backward-compatibility with existing installations. At the current point of time in our release cycle I will also not change something in the default my.cnf that is shipped with mysql. Probably the default will change to utf8 with MySQL-5.1. BTW: When changing the defaults you will probably also want to put the above mentioned option into the [mysqld] block so that it becomes default for both, clients and the server. bye, -christian- -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. However, the openssl package is 1.5 MB installed on i386. Perhaps you can copy this script into ca-certificates and drop the dependency on openssl? Ehr. Of course, c_rehash needs to calculate hashes, and uses the openssl binary for that. So just copying the script is obviously not enough. But perhaps certtool from gnutls-bin (installed size: 0.4 MB on i386) can do the trick as well? If you think it's a good idea to reduce the size of the dependencies, then I can try to make a c_rehash script that can work with both the openssl binary and certtool, and then you can depend on gnutls-bin | openssl, possibly saving 1.1 MB of space. -- Met vriendelijke groet / with kind regards, Guus Sliepen [EMAIL PROTECTED] signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Hi, On Fri, Jan 19, 2007, Marco Cabizza wrote: By the way, this is currently quite a common situation, is there any solution - will there be one any time soon ? The only current way for me to solve this is to build the missing packages. I think we should try to upload for i386 in experimental (at least there's an amd64 buildd). I think it's a waste of time to build the GNOME 2.16 packages by hand except by interested parties. If a DD happens to he interested and rebuilds some stuff, he's welcome to upload it of course. But it's really a waste of DD resources to build GNOME 2.16 manually. The proper long term solution is to fix sbuild; I wish I had time to work on this. Bye, -- Loïc Minier [EMAIL PROTECTED]

How to reproduce: Download the proof of concept perl script from http://www.milw0rm.com/exploits/2947 then log in as root and start the script as root (it's easy to understand and harmless, well, except to wget... ;-). You'll also find a backtrace in the comments at the beginning of the script. The login as a user, and start: wget --passive-ftp ftp://localhost/bla/fasel It will segfault. Bug#407495: Linux 2.6.18-686 serious boot problem in multi-user-mode, single-user boots without problems. (Kernel or scripts in initrd?)

This is unfortunately a known problem without much of an out of the box resolution. Probably a line in the release notes would be good to help people who might stumble across this. Achim, From the svn/experimental changelog you made the entry: + remove runtime dependency on libgpthoto2-2-dev. No longer necessary. I think the runtime dependency on libgphoto is still required. Without it installed, when I go into the Camera/Add Camera.../Add.., the 'Camera List' is totally empty. Bug#407495: Linux 2.6.18-686 serious boot problem in multi-user-mode, single-user boots without problems. (Kernel or scripts in initrd?)
Am Freitag, den 19.01.2007, 16:07 + schrieb Stephen Gran: I'm glad to hear it's working for you. This is unfortunately a known problem without much of an out of the box resolution. Probably a line in the release notes would be good to help people who might stumble across this. In the meantime, I am going to reduce the severity of the bug to normal, as it has a known workaround, and it is a known side effect of asynchronous device probing that will not be changed in the upstream kernel. Yes, it works to boot the kernel. (And that's a lot in this situation.) But /dev/hda and /dev/hde are still swapped, and the filesystem check fails. To test the system, I mounted the disks manually in single user mode and typed init 2 to get a working system. I don't want to edit this in my fstab, because I still want to boot the old kernel sometimes. And in the last 10 reboots (I tried a much to understand the problem further), one time the drives was not swapped, and this is most probably the reason why I was confused about a working single user mode. There must be a subtle problem in the IDE initialization order, depending on something which is a little random. But I can't see it clear at now, and I'm not in the situation that I can understand the various IDE drivers in the kernel source. One additional reason, why I do not edit my fstab... -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Bug#321102: kmail without dimap
Am 19.01.2007 16:37 schrieb Helmut Toplitzer: The popup will *only* kick-in when you have a DIMAP-(mail)-account. Using regular IMAP with workgroup-functions enabled, does not produce the popup. I'm using dimap with workgroup functions for 2 years now. Without problems. (It's easy if you know what NOT to do) Yes, I agree. But that's also the problem. If you know what not to do, then it might be possible to work with DIMAP without ever losing mails. But looking at bugs.kde.org and searching for KMail bugs about mail loss related to DIMAP reveals another truth: the users are not aware of those bugs. We could deliver KMail with DIMAP enabled, but then we'd have to make sure that every user who's trying to create an DIMAP account is aware of the risks. And by aware I mean that KMail must proactively provide this information when trying to create such an account -- not just a file hidden somewhere under /usr/share/doc. And every existing DIMAP user should be at least once reminded that DIMAP is potentially unsafe for production use. But even if we could provide appropriate warnings, we'd still deliver buggy and potentially harmful software in Debian stable... I'd prefer to disable DIMAP completely -- better to cut down a single feature than to expose our users to the risk of data loss. But that's just my opinion and I'm not a KDE-maintainer. From: http://groups-beta.google.com/group/django-users/browse_thread/thread/0a27ec05cce9b353 [..] The only reason to prefer psycopg over psycopg2 is historical - the API for psycopg2 wasn't finalized until quite recently, so we didn't recommend using it.
