Bug#432911: aptitude: localized package descriptions have problems with character sets
On Fri, Jul 13, 2007 at 01:58:35AM +0200, Jiří Paleček [EMAIL PROTECTED] was heard to say: I see there are some localized package descriptions in the archive. However, on my system, the non-english characters in the descriptions are displayed as question marks. See the attached screen dump for details. My guess is that this is because you're using an 8-bit character set, but the Packages files are encoded in UTF-8. When aptitude finds UTF-8 characters that it can't convert to the output charset, it replaces them with question marks. Could you try running your system in a UTF-8 locale (wherever you set cs_CZ as the locale, set cs_CZ.UTF-8 instead) and see if that helps? Make sure to run dpkg-reconfigure locales and check the box by cs_CZ.UTF-8 so the locale definition gets built. Note that this is not caused by fonts/terminal etc. since the menus contain non-english characters and are displayed properly. OK, so aptitude knows about your locale and is correctly formatting for it. Daniel

Bug#432745: /usr/share/texmf-texlive/tex/latex/preprint/figcaps.sty: Breaks \label and \ref with figures
Atsuhito Kohda wrote: Hi Josh, On Wed, 11 Jul 2007 11:03:18 -0700, Josh Triplett wrote: This makes \label and thus \ref not work in combination with \usepackage[printfigures]{figcaps}. Removing the \def of \label solves this problem; the labels and refs then work perfectly. I'm not sure but I've an impression that this could be a feature. I don't understand an intention of figcaps package so well yet but its manual tells me: The contents of all the figure and table environments are written to aux- iliary les .lof and .lot respectively, and then these are read in again at the end of the paper. Since these auxiliary les are normally used to write information for the lists of gures and tables, this capability is lost. I might be wrong but are you sure that it's a bug? Yes, quite sure. This doesn't relate to the inability to have lists of figures and lists of tables. By gutting the \label macro, figcaps breaks the ability to say see figure~\ref{fig:myfigure} and get see figure 1. Commenting out this change to the label macro makes such references work perfectly. - Josh Triplett signature.asc Description: OpenPGP digital signature
Bug#429444: ion3: General update after the debconf review process
(sending this even if you uploaded a new version including some of these fixes in the meantime) Dear Debian maintainer, On Wednesday, May 30, 2007, I sent you a notification about the beginning of a review action on debconf templates for ion3. Then, I sent you a bug report with rewritten templates and announcing the beginning of the second phase of this action: call for translation updates. Translators have been working hard and here is now the result of their efforts. Please consider using it EVEN if you committed files to your development tree as long as they were reported. The attached tarball contains: - debian/changelog with the list of changes - debian/control with rewrites of packages' descriptions - debian/templates with all the rewritten templates file(s) - debian/po/*.po with all PO files (existing ones and new ones) As said, please use *at least* the PO files as provided here, preferrably over those sent by translators in their bug reports. All of them have been checked and reformatted. In some cases, formatting errors have been corrected. The patch-nopo file contains a patch for the templates and control file(s). Please note that this patch applies to the templates and control file(s) of your package as of Wednesday, May 30, 2007. If your package was updated in the meantime, I may have updated my reference copybut I also may have missed that. This is indeed why I suggested you do not modified such files while the review process was running, remember..:-) It is now safe to upload a new package version with these changes. Please notify me of your intents with regards to this. There is of course no hurry to update your package but feel free to contact me in case you would need sponsoring or any other action to fix this. -- patch.tar.gz Description: Binary data --- ion3.old/debian/ion3.templates 2007-05-25 08:09:25.764023301 +0200 +++ ion3/debian/ion3.templates 2007-06-27 10:07:19.625976365 +0200 @@ -1,21 +1,31 @@ +# These templates have been reviewed by the debian-l10n-english +# team +# +# If modifications/additions/rewording are needed, please ask +# for an advice to [EMAIL PROTECTED] +# +# Even minor modifications require translation updates and such +# changes should be coordinated with translators and reviewers. + Template: ion3/acknowledge-outdated Type: boolean Default: false -_Description: Do you understand this version is not supported by the author? +_Description: Do you understand that this version is not supported by the author? Bug#416911: DirectFB 1.0 needed to fix a memory leak in gtk/dfb
Hi I'd like to know if any progress was recently made towards packaging DirectFB 1.0. DirectFB 1.0, among many improvements and fixes over version 0.9.25 like better touchpad support, provides a new method (DFBWindow::DetachEventBuffer () ) which is needed by a patch which was recently committed into gnome's svn. Such patch [1] fixes a huge memory leak which currently happens every time a progressbar is displayed and hid, resulting in some megs of memory wasted at the end of the installation. regards Attilio Fiandrotti [1] http://svn.gnome.org/viewcvs/gtk%2B/trunk/gdk/directfb/gdkevents-directfb.c?r1=17195r2=18459sortby=date -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#248300: nfs-kernel-server: exportfs -f uses wrong path in init script
On Thu, Jun 14, 2007 at 05:18:38PM +0200, Bart Cortooms wrote: We're using drbd+heartbeat+nfs as well, and the symptoms are the same: when calling /etc/init.d/nfs-kernel-server stop from the command line all threads are stopped cleanly. When heartbeat calls /etc/init.d/nfs-kernel-server stop however, the nfsd threads keep running. I haven't yet been able to figure out why the exact same command doesn't work when heartbeat calls it while it does work when called manually. I'm still a bit unsure what to actually do with this bug; it sounds more like a kernel bug to me than anything the nfs-utils package really can do anything about. What kernel are you using? Bug#394619: Acknowledgement (apt-get: not favoring sources listed first in sources.list)
I am the originator of this bug report. I have since found out what is going on here. You can read all about it here: http://www.ckintl.biz/index.php?id=62 http://www.debianhelp.org/node/7985 Basically this behavior is a by-product of the newish secure apt. If a package is found in more then one archive, some signed and some unsigned, then default behavior is to go with the signed archives and ignore the unsigned archives. This is probably a good thing. My local archive is not signed, therefore it is not used. To over-ride this default behavior, I just added APT::Get::AllowUnauthenticated true; to /etc/apt/apt.conf on my client machines, and now my local Debian archive server is working, with the appropriate packages cannot be authenticated warning. I believe apt is working as designed, and this bug report should be treated as a documentation bug report to make this behavior known in APT's docs. Bug#427580: bug #427580: apache2: new install failed to start
I did a complete purge of apache/apache2 removed all directories and reinstalled apache2 ... no listening sockets available, shutting down This could happen when /etc/init.d/apache2 stop did not work because the apache configuration was broken (or maybe because apache was stuck somehow). Your report however points out another problem: reading webcheck.dat shouldn't take 30 minutes. I've done some quick tests but I haven't been able to pinpoint this one yet. There seems to be something going wrong with the buffering. It turned out that the datatypes that were used were not very efficient. I've switched to using sets instead of lists which speeds reading the webcheck.dat file up a factor 25 (at least for the huge one of debian.org). -- -- arthur - [EMAIL PROTECTED] - http://people.debian.org/~adejong -- signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part
Bug#431239: Patches from Robert Millan
Hi! On Fri, Jul 13, 2007 at 11:25:26PM +, Julian Mehnle wrote: I don't recall the exact rules on combining LGPL and GPL code (it hasn't come up in any packages I've done), but that needs to be considered. More important is that is LGPL code is incorporated, the package is no longer distributable under the BSD license. This is true even considering that libspf2's actual license is LGPL/BSD rather than GPL/BSD. Robert's patch needs to be dual-licensed under LGPL and BSD just like libspf2 in order to allow the patched libspf2 to be distributed under the BSD license in the future. Robert, would you consider resubmitting your patch with the license note amended to that effect? To be honest, I have to say that I don't like the possibility of my code becoming non-free. That said, I always find it a reasonable compromise to allow this for the sake of merging the code upstream when the upstream maintainers require it. However, the upstream maintainer didn't reply to my emails, and the last release is more than 2 years old. In this situation it's really up to Debian. My code is DFSG-free and it can't bring incompatibility problems with other packages using it. It is really up to Magnus wether to include them. If there's ever someone actively maintaining libspf2 again, and that person wants to stick with an unprotected license, I'll gladly license it in these terms. The second part of the change, changing the SPF None response string from %s is neither permitted nor denied by %s, to %s doesn't provide an SPF record is a wording improvement, but given that it's been this way for several years, I don't know if there are programs that are dependent on that string. If there was any code depending on the explanatory result text, then that would be a design bug in such code. For the record, this puzzled me when debugging, since I was delluded into thinking I was getting an SPF_RESULT_NEUTRAL when it was actually SPF_RESULT_NONE. I think it's important to distinguish. So, I'd suggest this is an improvement, but not entirely without risk. I'd tend not to want to make it, but I could understand either way. I say go ahead with the change. I wouldn't... er... would not use a contraction, though. Say %s does not provide an SPF record instead. I spent some time debugging through this, trying to figure out how cfs is supposed to be working. It seems like the core of the problem is the line mount -oport=3049,intr,nfsvers=2 localhost:$NULL_EXPORT $CRYPT_ROOT || rc=1 However, cfsd never registers with the portmapper. If you don't use portmapper, you'll need to specify the entire triplet port/version/protocol, or the mount will fail -- for some reason, earlier versions of mount (ie. versions from before the split into mount.nfs) were more forgiving about this, but they are not anymore. In other words, the cfs package needs to add ,udp to its list of NFS-mounting option. Reassigning appropriately, and setting severity as this completely breaks cfs TTBOMK. /* Steinar */ -- Homepage: http://www.sesse.net/ -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#433075: soundconverter: Option to use ID3v2 version 2.3 instead of version 2.4
Hi William. Thus an option to create tags in version 2.3 would be nice. This would improve downwards compatibility. All applications I've tried can read them... Which application are you using doesn't work? Uh, I’m sorry. I over exaggerated this a bit. Actually it’s only EasyTag now. I remember it being more programs a while ago. Unfortunately I cannot check if the latest version of EasyTag fixes this because of #432257. My initial suggestion remains, however. But I actually don’t know how hard it would be to include support for ID3 version 2.3 since this seems to be a limitation of Gstreamers id3v2mux. Bug#432953: kid3: kid3 not allowing creation of new export/import formats
Hi Paulo, I believe I found what seems to be the bug: if one of the fields, either from the import or the export dialog, is not filled, kid3 doesn't store the new format. Unfortunately, you're right. Kid3 stores the new format but it does not accept it the next time it is started because the empty fields are stripped from the end of the string list. This is a feature of KDE (KConfigBase), the Qt version uses the more or less compatible QSettings, which does not strip empty strings. Because I am doing most of the development with the Qt only version, I did not detect this bug. Sorry, a patch is available at http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detailaid=1753949group_id=70849atid=529223 Regards, Urs

Bug#433098: evolution: delete message should work also for deleted messages
Package: evolution Version: 2.10.2-1 Severity: minor I've just upgraded to this version of Evolution, and message deletion has changed behavior: it is no longer possible to delete a message that is already deleted. This is a problem to me because I use it also for navigation. This might require a bit of explanation, please bear with me. When I read a big folder of new messages, such as the ones for big discussion mailing lists every morning (debian-devel, etc), I start at the top and read or skim each message. Almost all messages get deleted immediately after that, either by pressing Control-D or by clicking the trashcan icon in the tool bar, depending on whether I happen to be typing or mousing at the moment. If the message seems important, or something that I will need to do something about, or that I might want to re-read more carefully, I don't delete it, and instead go to the next message, almost always by clicking on the next message icon in the tool bar. There's usually few of them, during each mail reading session. Often when reading a thread, I realize that I need to go back to re-read a previous message to understand the current context. Typically, I want to check what someone really wrote rather than what is being insufficiently quoted. Thus I click on the message in the message list. To get back where I was, I either click on the message I was reading if I'm mousing, or type Control-D to skip the few deleted messages (by deleting them again) to get back where I was. That last bit is actually very typical for me. It now no longer works. I have to interrupt my reading concentration and figure out some other way to get where I was, and this is annoying. That's why I'd like to see that the old behavior was brought back. I'm not saying it is so annoying that I will unsubscribe from every mailing list in the world, shut down my mail server, uninstall Evolution from my system, shave my head, join an agnostic monastery in the mountains of New Zealand, and spend the rest of my life digging out a real-life replica of Moria into the mountain, but you never know. My fate now lies in the hands of the Evolution developers. -- System Information: Debian Release: lenny/sid APT prefers testing APT policy: (500, 'testing') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.6.21-2-686 (SMP w/1 CPU core) Locale: LANG=fi_FI.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=fi_FI.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Versions of packages evolution depends on: ii dbus1.1.1-3 simple interprocess messaging syst ii evolution-common2.10.2-1 architecture independent files for ii evolution-data-server 1.10.2-2 evolution database backend server ii gconf2 2.18.0.1-3 GNOME configuration database syste ii gnome-icon-theme2.18.0-3 GNOME Desktop icon theme ii gtkhtml3.14 3.14.2-1 HTML rendering/editing library - b ii libart-2.0-22.3.19-3 Library of functions for 2D graphi ii libatk1.0-0 1.18.0-2 The ATK accessibility toolkit ii libbonobo2-02.18.0-2 Bonobo CORBA interfaces library ii libbonoboui2-0 2.18.0-5 The Bonobo UI library ii libc6 2.5-9+b1 GNU C Library: Shared libraries ii libcairo2 1.4.10-1 The Cairo 2D vector graphics libra ii libcamel1.2-10 1.10.2-2 The Evolution MIME message handlin ii libdbus-1-3 1.1.1-3 simple interprocess messaging syst ii libdbus-glib-1-20.73-2 simple interprocess messaging syst ii libebook1.2-9 1.10.2-2 Client library for evolution addre ii libecal1.2-71.10.2-2 Client library for evolution calen ii libedataserver1.2-9 1.10.2-2 Utility library for evolution data ii libedataserverui1.2-8 1.10.2-2 GUI utility library for evolution ii libegroupwise1.2-13 1.10.2-2 Client library for accessing group ii libexchange-storage1.2- 1.10.2-2 Backend library for evolution cale ii libfontconfig1 2.4.2-1.2generic font configuration library ii libfreetype62.2.1-6 FreeType 2 font engine, shared lib ii libgconf2-4 2.18.0.1-3 GNOME configuration database syste ii libglade2-0 1:2.6.1-1library to load .glade files at ru ii libglib2.0-02.12.12-1The GLib library of C routines ii libgnome-keyring0 0.8.1-2 GNOME keyring services library ii libgnome-pilot2 2.0.15-2 Support libraries for gnome-pilot ii libgnome2-0 2.18.0-4 The GNOME 2 library - runtime file ii libgnomecanvas2-0 2.14.0-3 A powerful object-oriented display ii libgnomeprint2.2-0 2.18.0-2 The GNOME 2.2 print architecture - ii libgnomeprintui2.2-02.18.0-2 GNOME 2.2 print architecture User

Your hardware is apparently not correctly supported by the current kernel versions. They are also the people you should send *all* the output that is visible on your display after booting with 'apic=debug' (and even the info that is visible if you scroll up using shift-PageUp if that is possible). an with the noapic option I could boot but without mouse and keyboard support. Bug#431911: xgalaga
Hi, yes,it is just stalled, maybe it is only the curser that causes the problem,in fact the curser is moveablebut without a function!? yes,i can switch to other consoles. sorry:( ,i forgot to say that i play xgalaga in fullscreen on 19 TFT on 1280x1024 75 Hz,but do not think that matters, this resolution is default x11 config from the installer,i never touched this config by myself! xgalaga fades out when sreensaver starts, its like a dimming. When i exit xgalaga i return to gnomedesktop and everything is stalled: taskbar, ikons but the curser is still moving. Maybe something in x11 is not loaded anymore, the behavior is not like a hard crash, its more like a deactivation of x11 funktions! thank you and happy hacking :) Am Samstag, den 14.07.2007, 00:36 +0200 schrieb Josselin Mouette: Le jeudi 05 juillet 2007 à 23:44 +0200, Ingo Seidel a écrit : playing xgalaga for a while, will be interrupted from screensaver(debian etch 4.0 default) with the result of crashing xserver in a way that i can`t click on anything on the desktop. Bug#432975: seahorse: systray applet does not show up anymore
Josselin Mouette wrote: Le vendredi 13 juillet 2007 à 16:50 +0200, Michael Biebl a écrit : I don't completely agree with the decision though. The notification area icon only shows up, as soon as you actually use one of your SSH or GPG keys. You then get the options in the context menu to show the currently active keys and clear the cache, which is a useful and valuable functionality imho. It makes it clear and obvious, that one of your keys is currently in use, so I'd vote for reverting this change. Practically speaking, it is here most of the time while there is nothing to be notified of. This is an abuse of the purpose of the notification area, but clearly not the only one. Many people are eager to see the new applet API at work to get rid of such abuse. Why not keep this functionality enabled until the new API (which I haven't heard of yet, do you have a link?) is in place then? I don't see, why it is an abuse to provide useful functionality. If you disable the systray applet, there is no way anymore to show the list of currently cached windows and clear the cache, and most importantly it shows me, that seahorse is actually active and working. As long as this kind of functionality isn't available through other mechanisms, please keep the systray applet enabled.
