Bug#432911: aptitude: localized package descriptions have problems with character sets

2007-07-14 Thread Daniel Burrows
On Fri, Jul 13, 2007 at 01:58:35AM +0200, Jiří Paleček [EMAIL PROTECTED] was
heard to say:
I see there are some localized package descriptions in the
archive. However, on my system, the non-english characters in the
descriptions are displayed as question marks. See the attached
 screen dump for details.

My guess is that this is because you're using an 8-bit character set,
but the Packages files are encoded in UTF-8. When aptitude finds UTF-8
characters that it can't convert to the output charset, it replaces them
with question marks.

Could you try running your system in a UTF-8 locale (wherever you set
cs_CZ as the locale, set cs_CZ.UTF-8 instead) and see if that helps?
Make sure to run dpkg-reconfigure locales and check the box by
cs_CZ.UTF-8 so the locale definition gets built.

Note that this is not caused by fonts/terminal etc. since the menus
contain non-english characters and are displayed properly.

OK, so aptitude knows about your locale and is correctly formatting
for it.

I'm not sure but I've an impression that this could be
a feature. I don't understand an intention of figcaps package
so well yet but its manual tells me:

The contents of all the figure and table environments are written to aux-
iliary les .lof and .lot respectively, and then these are read in again at
the end of the paper. Since these auxiliary les are normally used to write
information for the lists of gures and tables, this capability is lost.

I might be wrong but are you sure that it's a bug?

Yes, quite sure. This doesn't relate to the inability to have lists of
figures and lists of tables. By gutting the \label macro, figcaps breaks the
ability to say see figure~\ref{fig:myfigure} and get see figure 1.
Commenting out this change to the label macro makes such references work
perfectly.

Bug#429444: ion3: General update after the debconf review process

2007-07-14 Thread Christian Perrier
(sending this even if you uploaded a new version including some of
these fixes in the meantime)

Dear Debian maintainer,

On Wednesday, May 30, 2007, I sent you a notification about the beginning of a
review
action on debconf templates for ion3.

Then, I sent you a bug report with rewritten templates and announcing
the beginning of the second phase of this action: call for translation
updates.

Translators have been working hard and here is now the result of their efforts.

Please consider using it EVEN if you committed files to your
development tree as long as they were reported.

The attached tarball contains:

- debian/changelog with the list of changes
- debian/control with rewrites of packages' descriptions
- debian/templates with all the rewritten templates file(s)
- debian/po/*.po with all PO files (existing ones and new ones)

As said, please use *at least* the PO files as provided here,
preferrably over those sent by translators in their bug reports. All
of them have been checked and reformatted. In some cases, formatting
errors have been corrected.

The patch-nopo file contains a patch for the templates and control file(s).

Please note that this patch applies to the templates and control
file(s) of your package as of Wednesday, May 30, 2007. If your package was
updated
in the meantime, I may have updated my reference copybut I also
may have missed that. This is indeed why I suggested you do not
modified such files while the review process was running,
remember..:-)

It is now safe to upload a new package version with these changes.

Please notify me of your intents with regards to this.

There is of course no hurry to update your package but feel free to
contact me in case you would need sponsoring or any other action to
fix this.

Around DAY25, I will contact you again and will send a final patch

updates to debconf translations and new debconf translations).

Again, thanks for your attention and cooperation.

Hi,

This bug is marked as done by bts-link [1], but reading upstream bug
log, seems that it's actually a bug with xorg [2].

I believe we should reassign it...

The running kernel is the same, with same modules, as used with older

Have you tried to downgrade to the old version to make sure the problem
comes from there? There is no code change between the two versions, so
I found the problem a bit strange.

Also could you please try to run strace sensors to see where it hangs?

Bug#416911: DirectFB 1.0 needed to fix a memory leak in gtk/dfb

2007-07-14 Thread Attilio Fiandrotti

Hi

I'd like to know if any progress was recently made towards packaging
DirectFB 1.0.
DirectFB 1.0, among many improvements and fixes over version 0.9.25 like
better touchpad support, provides a new method
(DFBWindow::DetachEventBuffer () ) which is needed by a patch which was
recently committed into gnome's svn.
Such patch [1] fixes a huge memory leak which currently happens every
time a progressbar is displayed and hid, resulting in some megs of
memory wasted at the end of the installation.

regards

Attilio Fiandrotti

Bug#433073: Please disable DirectFB's window backend buffer

2007-07-14 Thread Attilio Fiandrotti

package: rootskel-gtk
severity: wishlist
tags: patch

DirectFB allows to set [1] the way the desktop window buffering
mechanism works by disabling the backend buffer.
The result, in my experiments, was saving some some hundreds KB of
memory with no noticeable drawbacks.
I propose to apply the attached one-line patch and look for possible
artifact which may appear on the display, and in the case reverse the patch.

regards

Attilio

Bug#248300: nfs-kernel-server: exportfs -f uses wrong path in init script

I haven't yet been able to figure out why the exact same command doesn't
work when heartbeat calls it while it does work when called manually.

I'm still a bit unsure what to actually do with this bug; it sounds more like
a kernel bug to me than anything the nfs-utils package really can do anything
about. What kernel are you using? Could a reassign be appropriate?

Bug#394619: Acknowledgement (apt-get: not favoring sources listed first in sources.list)

2007-07-14 Thread Clayton
I am the originator of this bug report.

I have since found out what is going on here. You can read all about it
here:
http://www.ckintl.biz/index.php?id=62
http://www.debianhelp.org/node/7985

Basically this behavior is a by-product of the newish secure apt. If a
package is found in more then one archive, some signed and some
unsigned, then default behavior is to go with the signed archives and
ignore the unsigned archives. This is probably a good thing. My local
archive is not signed, therefore it is not used.

To over-ride this default behavior, I just added

APT::Get::AllowUnauthenticated true;

to /etc/apt/apt.conf on my client machines, and now my local Debian
archive server is working, with the appropriate packages cannot be
authenticated warning.

I believe apt is working as designed, and this bug report should be
treated as a documentation bug report to make this behavior known in
APT's docs.

Bug#421736: Similar Problem with xfce4

2007-07-14 Thread Matthias Bläsing
Package: tilda
Version: 0.09.4-4

--- Please enter the report below this line. ---

Hello,

I experience a similar problem. Here I'm using XFCE4 with a panel on the
top. I configured tilda to be at the top of the screen (expecting it to
open directly under the panel). This works as expected, as long as the
open animation is enabled. As this is a sluggish on my notebook when a
video is played in parallel, I deactivated it and it opens now with an
offset of 14px below the panel (see the attached pictures).

When I open the config window, press ok without changing anything, the
window jumps to the correct location.

HTH

Bug#427580: bug #427580: apache2: new install failed to start

2007-07-14 Thread Stefan Fritsch
 I did a complete purge of apache/apache2
removed all directories and reinstalled apache2
...
no listening sockets available, shutting down

This could happen when /etc/init.d/apache2 stop did not work because
the apache configuration was broken (or maybe because apache was stuck
somehow). I don't think we can do much about this, you just have to
manually kill leftover apache processes.

but crawling is not very fast.

Your report however points out another problem: reading webcheck.dat
 shouldn't take 30 minutes. I've done some quick tests but I haven't
been able to pinpoint this one yet. There seems to be something going
 wrong with the buffering.

It turned out that the datatypes that were used were not very efficient.
I've switched to using sets instead of lists which speeds reading the
webcheck.dat file up a factor 25 (at least for the huge one of
debian.org).

Bug#431239: Patches from Robert Millan

2007-07-14 Thread Robert Millan

Hi!

On Fri, Jul 13, 2007 at 11:25:26PM +, Julian Mehnle wrote:
I don't recall the exact rules on combining LGPL and GPL code (it hasn't
come up in any packages I've done), but that needs to be considered.

More important is that is LGPL code is incorporated, the package is no
longer distributable under the BSD license.

This is true even considering that libspf2's actual license is LGPL/BSD
rather than GPL/BSD. Robert's patch needs to be dual-licensed under LGPL
and BSD just like libspf2 in order to allow the patched libspf2 to be
distributed under the BSD license in the future. Robert, would you
consider resubmitting your patch with the license note amended to that
 effect?

To be honest, I have to say that I don't like the possibility of my code
becoming non-free. That said, I always find it a reasonable compromise to
allow this for the sake of merging the code upstream when the upstream
maintainers require it.

However, the upstream maintainer didn't reply to my emails, and the last
release is more than 2 years old. In this situation it's really up to Debian.
My code is DFSG-free and it can't bring incompatibility problems with
other packages using it. It is really up to Magnus wether to include them.

If there's ever someone actively maintaining libspf2 again, and that person
wants to stick with an unprotected license, I'll gladly license it in these
terms.

The second part of the change, changing the SPF None response string
  from

%s is neither permitted nor denied by %s,

  to

%s doesn't provide an SPF record

is a wording improvement, but given that it's been this way for several
years, I don't know if there are programs that are dependent on that
  string.

If there was any code depending on the explanatory result text, then that
would be a design bug in such code.

For the record, this puzzled me when debugging, since I was delluded into
thinking I was getting an SPF_RESULT_NEUTRAL when it was actually
SPF_RESULT_NONE. I think it's important to distinguish.

So, I'd suggest this is an improvement, but not entirely without risk.
I'd tend not to want to make it, but I could understand either way.

I say go ahead with the change. I wouldn't... er... would not use a
contraction, though. Say %s does not provide an SPF record instead.

Fine with that.

I get the following messages when running cfsd manually on the console:

mount: mount to NFS server 'localhost' failed: RPC Error: Success.
 cfsd: cfs_mount failed.

I spent some time debugging through this, trying to figure out how cfs is
supposed to be working. It seems like the core of the problem is the line

  mount -oport=3049,intr,nfsvers=2 localhost:$NULL_EXPORT $CRYPT_ROOT || rc=1

However, cfsd never registers with the portmapper. If you don't use
portmapper, you'll need to specify the entire triplet port/version/protocol,
or the mount will fail -- for some reason, earlier versions of mount (ie.
versions from before the split into mount.nfs) were more forgiving about
this, but they are not anymore. In other words, the cfs package needs to add
,udp to its list of NFS-mounting option. Reassigning appropriately, and
setting severity as this completely breaks cfs TTBOMK.

I worked out why thttpd isn't logging properly.

When logrotate moves /var/log/thttpd.log to /var/log/thttpd.log.1,

Bug#433081: debcommit: git diff against HEAD, ignoring the index

2007-07-14 Thread martin f krafft
Package: devscripts
Version: 2.10.6
Severity: normal
File: /usr/bin/debcommit
Tags: patch

This patch does three things:

  - it stops the use of commit -a and instead expects proper use of
the index (diff --cached is already being used).

  - adds to the unable to determine commit message a note about
git add, if git is being used.

  - it uses git diff, since git-diff is being deprecated.

Bug#433003: Suggestion: moving get_env_var_of_process into the main script

hibernate 1.96~pre-svn.r1136-1 introduced a new function:
 get_env_var_of_process().

It is included in gaim, sylpheed_claws and galeon scriptlets.

Argh! sylpheed_claws and galeon weren't supposed to be included. But
are you using them? I am uneasy including them since it's too far
off hibernate's real job, but if people use them, why not?

May I suggest to move this function into the main script?

Would you prepare a patch for me?

Uh, I’m sorry. I over exaggerated this a bit. Actually it’s only EasyTag now. I
remember it being more programs a while ago. Unfortunately I cannot check if the
latest version of EasyTag fixes this because of #432257.

My initial suggestion remains, however. But I actually don’t know how hard it
would be to include support for ID3 version 2.3 since this seems to be a
limitation of Gstreamers id3v2mux.

 1.18 is out: http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Source_downloads#ver_1.18.0.6

Thanks.

I've had to redo a few of my dpatches due to changes in the buildsystem
to use pkgconfig (although not the way I was using it), and now it
builds but the final link fails looking for llresolv6 (See VWR-1598 [1])

I am as yet unsure how much work replacing llresolv6 will be, but I
should have a build and source package uploaded to [2] in the next day.

If I read the release notes correctly, this should be the last mandatory
update of the viewer, which takes a bit of pressure off me to get builds
up in a timely manner. ^_^

The artwork package is already up at [3].

Bug#396699: FTBFS on GNU/kFreeBSD not fixed in cacao 0.98-1

found 396699 0.98-1

Hi,

the current version still fails to build on GNU/kFreeBSD.

Please find attached patch to fix that, it contains

- reorder *freebsd* and *kfreebsd*-gnu entries in configure.ac/configure
needed for both kfreebsd-i386 and kfreebsd-amd64

- adding three chunks for src/mm/boehm-gc/
needed only for kfreebsd-amd64, as boehm-gc used in cacao 0.98
does support kfreebsd-i386 but does not support kfreebsd-amd64 yet.

It would also be nice if you can ask cacao upstream
to include this changes.

Thanks in advance

Bug#433084: exim4: [INTL:es] Patch to update the Spanish translation

2007-07-14 Thread Javier Fernández-Sanguino Peña

Package: exim4
Version: 4.67-6
Priority: minor
Tags: l10n patch

It seems that the po-debconf templates for exim4 were slightly modified and
the Spanish translation for one string marked as fuzzy (when it was
correct). I've been sent a new PO file by Christian Perrier asking for
updates.

As this update is really minor, I'm sending just a patch to fix it. Please
apply it to the Spanish exim4 translation (after running 'podebconf-updatepo'
in the dir I guess). If you have any kind of issue with the patch and prefer
the full PO file just ask for it. I'm not sending the PO file just to
save bandwidth and disk space at b.d.o.

Regards

Javier

Bug#433083: ITP: Dashboard -- automatic action and context related search tool

Package: wnpp

* Package name: dashboard
  Version : 0.0

* URL : http://www.nat.org/dashboard/
* License : MIT/X11
  Programming Lang: C#
Description : automatic action and context related search tool

Instead of searching for things on your computer, dashboard will
automaticly do it for you while you are using applications.
The goal of the dashboard is to automatically show a user useful files
and other objects as he goes about his day. While you read email, browse
the web, write a document, or talk to your friends on IM, the dashboard
does its best to proactively find objects that are relevant to your
current activity, and to display them in a friendly way, saving you from
digging around through your stuff like a disorganized filing clerk.

Bug#433085: nagios2: pid file keeps being deleted

2007-07-14 Thread Sam Morris
Package: nagios2
Version: 2.6-2+etch1
Severity: important

While configuring nagios I have been using the init script's reload
action a lot. After doing this a few times the pid file is deleted,
though the daemon continues to run in the background. This causes
subsequent invocations of the stop/restart/reload actions to fail, and
the start action results in two instances of the daemon running.

Bug#432953: kid3: kid3 not allowing creation of new export/import formats

2007-07-14 Thread Urs Fleisch

Hi Paulo,

I believe I found what seems to be the bug: if one of the fields,
either from the import or the export dialog, is not filled,
kid3 doesn't store the new format.

Unfortunately, you're right. Kid3 stores the new format but it does not
accept it the next time it is started because the empty fields are
stripped from the end of the string list. This is a feature of KDE
(KConfigBase), the Qt version uses the more or less compatible QSettings,
which does not strip empty strings. Because I am doing most of the
development with the Qt only version, I did not detect this bug. Sorry, a
patch is available at

When upgrading my system today, early during the upgrade process, the

from my notification area (though the process was still running), and my

25 minutes later, it came back up, which was fine, but it would be nice
if it hadn't gone down in the intervening time.

Hello, Mykola!

Thanks for submitting the Ukrainian translation. Please download your PO
file here and update/fill in the missing/fuzzy strings, as some of the
strings have changed in our SVN repository since the last release:

http://svn.berlios.de/svnroot/repos/gpodder/trunk/data/po/uk.po

Send me the file ([EMAIL PROTECTED]), and I'll add the updated translation
to our repository, so we can have a complete Ukrainian translation for
the new release.

If possible, you should also translate the strings in

http://svn.berlios.de/svnroot/repos/gpodder/trunk/data/gpodder.desktop

and send me the updated file too, so we have Ukrainian translations in
the Applications menu.

Thanks,

Bug#433095: DDPO: does not show all my sponsored packages

2007-07-14 Thread Thijs Kinkhorst
Package: qa.debian.org
User: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Usertags: ddpo

Hi,

My DDPO does not show all packages I sponsored. Last week I sponsored the
following packages:

http://qa.debian.org/developer.php?packages=bcm5700-source
http://qa.debian.org/developer.php?packages=ampache
http://qa.debian.org/developer.php?packages=scuttle

But these do not show up on my DDPO:
http://qa.debian.org/developer.php?login=thijs

The Uploader: tooltip shows only a key ID, but that key id is in fact (a
subkey of) my key. Maybe it doesn't handle subkeys correctly?

years now, so this bug can be closed. I guess it wasn't that absurd to
want to play several CDs in succession...

I did apt-get dist-upgrade in my unstable chroot and I now have
classpath version 2:0.95-1. However, I still don't see the
menubar. The problem is reproducible in a vncserver started inside the
chroot so my normal sarge system should not affect the behavior. I
don't unfortunately have real graphics hardware to run xorg on any of
 the unstable systems.

Hmmm, I cant reproduce this. I tried in an unstable chroot and running
an etch Xorg. Once directly on a machine and another time the Xorg
exported via x11vnc. I dont think so but it might be possible that your
Sarge somehow influences this. I have no sarge system anymore. I'm on
etch now. Would it be possible to test on a system with etch as base
system?

I tag this bug now as unreproducible because I cant reproduce it and
help to make others aware this bug needs more input from others.

Cheers,
Michael

Bug#433098: evolution: delete message should work also for deleted messages

2007-07-14 Thread Lars Wirzenius
Package: evolution
Version: 2.10.2-1
Severity: minor

I've just upgraded to this version of Evolution, and message deletion
has changed behavior: it is no longer possible to delete a message that
is already deleted. This is a problem to me because I use it also for
navigation. This might require a bit of explanation, please bear with
me.

When I read a big folder of new messages, such as the ones for big
discussion mailing lists every morning (debian-devel, etc), I start
at the top and read or skim each message. Almost all messages get
deleted immediately after that, either by pressing Control-D or by clicking
the trashcan icon in the tool bar, depending on whether I happen to
be typing or mousing at the moment.

If the message seems important, or something that I will need to do
something about, or that I might want to re-read more carefully, I don't
delete it, and instead go to the next message, almost always by clicking
on the next message icon in the tool bar. There's usually few of them,
during each mail reading session.

Often when reading a thread, I realize that I need to go back to re-read
a previous message to understand the current context. Typically, I want
to check what someone really wrote rather than what is being
insufficiently quoted. Thus I click on the message in the message list.
To get back where I was, I either click on the message I was reading
if I'm mousing, or type Control-D to skip the few deleted messages
(by deleting them again) to get back where I was.

That last bit is actually very typical for me. It now no longer works. I
have to interrupt my reading concentration and figure out some other way
to get where I was, and this is annoying. That's why I'd like to see that
the old behavior was brought back.

I'm not saying it is so annoying that I will unsubscribe from every
mailing list in the world, shut down my mail server, uninstall Evolution
from my system, shave my head, join an agnostic monastery in the mountains
of New Zealand, and spend the rest of my life digging out a real-life
replica of Moria into the mountain, but you never know. My fate now lies
in the hands of the Evolution developers.

There is not very much we can do about this in Debian (or Ubuntu). Your
hardware is apparently not correctly supported by the current kernel
versions. I'd strongly suggest you file a bug report with the upstream
kernel maintainers [1] because they are the only people that can fix
this.

They are also the people you should send *all* the output that is visible
on your display after booting with 'apic=debug' (and even the info that
is visible if you scroll up using shift-PageUp if that is possible).

 an with
the noapic option I could boot but without mouse and keyboard support.
 I have a M2N4-SLI fromAsus with the latest bios, a 5000+ X2 and 2*1 GiB
 of ram [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Some suggestions in the mean time:
- if you are using a USB keyboard, try a regular PS/2 (AT) keyboard and
  vice versa
- try booting with 'nolapic' and with 'acpi=off'

Note that these parameters are not _solutions_, they are only temporary
workarounds and they may result in reduced support of your hardware.

Cheers,
FJP

Bug#431911: xgalaga

2007-07-14 Thread Ingo Seidel
Hi,

yes,it is just stalled, maybe it is only the curser that
causes the problem,in fact the curser is moveablebut without a
function!?
yes,i can switch to other consoles.

sorry:( ,i forgot to say that i play xgalaga in fullscreen on 19 TFT on
1280x1024 75 Hz,but do not think that matters, this resolution is default
x11 config from the installer,i never touched this config by myself!

xgalaga fades out when sreensaver starts, its like a dimming.
When i exit xgalaga i return to gnomedesktop and everything is stalled:
taskbar, ikons but the curser is still moving.
Maybe something in x11 is not loaded anymore, the behavior is not like a
hard crash, its more like a deactivation of x11 funktions!

thank you
and happy hacking :)

Can you still switch to other virtual consoles with control+alt+F1 to

I don't know if it makes difference but you should try to upgrade
binutils away from that version from experimental.

Nothing to do with this bug, but thanks for pointing it out.

Apt and other utils think that experimental has bigger version number
 than more recent in unstable.
Maybe bug should be filed against binutils/ftp.debian.org requesting
 removing old version in experimental.

This is a bug in binutils' version numbers because, according to policy,
punctuation characters sort after letters.

Best wishes,

Bug#428007: Trouble with configure recognizing superlu

2007-07-14 Thread Christophe Prud'homme
Adam,

| error message = {conftest.c:3:23: error: slu_ddefs.h: No such file or

|
| Is it possible there's a version mismatch? Christophe, is it possible
| that the Debian package doesn't install this (optional?) header file?
|
| The directory /usr/include/superlu has:
| Cnames.h csp_defs.h dsp_defs.h ssp_defs.h util.h
| colamd.h dcomplex.h scomplex.h supermatrix.h zsp_defs.h
|
| Thanks,
| -Adam
it seems that the version in debian is too old, I have downloaded the lastest
version of superlu in debian today following the comments from
Satish Balay

what about suitesparse/umfpack ? was there any issue with it ?

Best regards
C.

Bug#432975: seahorse: systray applet does not show up anymore

2007-07-14 Thread Michael Biebl

I don't completely agree with the decision though.
The notification area icon only shows up, as soon as you actually use
one of your SSH or GPG keys. You then get the options in the context
menu to show the currently active keys and clear the cache, which is a
useful and valuable functionality imho. It makes it clear and obvious,
that one of your keys is currently in use, so I'd vote for reverting
 this change.

Practically speaking, it is here most of the time while there is nothing
to be notified of. This is an abuse of the purpose of the notification
area, but clearly not the only one. Many people are eager to see the new
applet API at work to get rid of such abuse.

Why not keep this functionality enabled until the new API (which I
haven't heard of yet, do you have a link?) is in place then?
I don't see, why it is an abuse to provide useful functionality. If you
disable the systray applet, there is no way anymore to show the list of
currently cached windows and clear the cache, and most importantly it
shows me, that seahorse is actually active and working.
As long as this kind of functionality isn't available through other
mechanisms, please keep the systray applet enabled.

Cheers,
Michael
