Their explanation is attached below. If this explanation is unsatisfactory and you have not received a better one in a separate message then please contact maximilian attems [EMAIL PROTECTED] by replying to this email. Debian bug tracking system administrator (administrator, Debian Bugs database) I disagree with this assessment. It may not be a kernel bug, but it is a bug which makes my system unbootable. If you are sure it is not a kernel bug, then you should reassign the bug to the offending party. Of course I know about disk labels, but Debian doesn't seem to be using them. The point is not whether I could fix my system, but why it is broken in the first place. Furthermore, I am not convinced that the kernel never has guaranteed device ordering. This may be true today, now that we have udev, but it would have broken countless systems during the last sixteen years. Oh, and incidentally, this has never happened to me before, and I have been using Linux for fifteen and a half of these sixteen years. I also object to the dismissive manner in which this bug report was rejected. If Debian does not want to receive any bug reports from its users, or in fact wishes to reduce its user base, then this is the correct way to continue. Otherwise it is not. However, I am mystified since this default configuration does not include any tail configuration. But anyway, error message could've been more helpful. There could have been some punctuation between tail and logfile but the error message is reasonably accurate. It says that the tail command to conky is trying to tail a file (logfile) that does not exist or you do not have permissions to read it. Perhaps you could run strace -o /tmp/conky.strace conky and send the output to the bug list. So far the bug continues to be unreproducible. Bug#443269: schedutils: Patch to fix problems with ionice command execution
Package: schedutils Version: 1.5.0-1 Severity: normal Tags: patch I have a patch which fixes some problems when ionice is asked to execute a command: 1. When execvp'ing the command, check that the execvp actually succeeds (actually it doesn't check, it just assumes that if execvp returns then the exec must have failed). If the execvp fails, report the errno value and exit with a non-zero exit status. The old code would simply exit with successful status if asked to execute a command that did not exist or otherwise failed to start executing, which wreaks all kinds of havoc in shell scripts. 2. Before exec, do setuid(getuid()), dropping privileges if ionice happens to be setuid. Also report errors while attempting to do this, and exit without executing anything if the setuid call fails. I'm not sure if it's a good idea to make ionice setuid by default (or at all), but unfortunately the kernel interface seems to insist on root privileges even if you want to select a lower I/O priority, so I find it quite helpful to have a setuid binary of ionice around. --- ionice.c-schedutils-1.5.0 2007-09-20 01:23:44.0 -0400 +++ ionice.c2007-09-20 01:30:07.0 -0400 @@ -143,8 +143,16 @@ return 1; } - if (argv[optind]) - execvp(argv[optind], argv[optind]); + if (argv[optind]) { + if (setuid(getuid())) { + perror(setuid(getuid())); + return 1; + } else { + execvp(argv[optind], argv[optind]); + perror(execvp); + return 1; + } + } } return 0; -- System Information: Debian Release: 4.0 APT prefers stable APT policy: (500, 'stable'), (102, 'testing'), (101, 'unstable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.6.22.1-zb5s (SMP w/1 CPU core) Locale: LANG=C, LC_CTYPE=C (charmap=ANSI_X3.4-1968) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Versions of packages schedutils depends on: ii libc6 2.6.1-1+b1 GNU C Library: Shared libraries schedutils recommends no packages. -- no debconf information -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#443270: lirc: [debconf_rewrite] Debconf templates and debian/control review
Package: lirc Version: N/A Severity: normal Tags: patch Dear Debian maintainer, On Thursday, September 06, 2007, I notified you of the beginning of a review process concerning debconf templates for lirc. The debian-l10n-english contributors have now reviewed these templates, and the proposed changes are attached to this bug report. Please review the suggested changes are suggested, and if you have any objections, let me know in the next 3 days. Please try to avoid uploading lirc with these changes right now. The second phase of this process will begin on Sunday, September 23, 2007, when I will coordinate updates to translations of debconf templates. The existing translators will be notified of the changes: they will receive an updated PO file for their language. Simultaneously, a general call for new translations will be sent to the debian-i18n mailing list. Both these calls for translations will request updates to be sent as individual bug reports. That will probably trigger a lot of bug reports against your package, but these should be easier to deal with. The call for translation updates and new translations will run until about Sunday, October 14, 2007. Please avoid uploading a package with fixed or changed debconf templates and/or translation updates in the meantime. Of course, other changes are safe. Please note that this is an approximative delay, which depends on my own availability to process this work and is influenced by the fact that I simultaneously work on many packages. Around DAY25, I will contact you again and will send a final patch summarizing all the updates (changes to debconf templates, updates to debconf translations and new debconf translations). Bug#443271: sympa: [INTL:fr] French debconf templates translation update
Package: sympa Version: N/A Severity: wishlist Tags: patch l10n Please find attached the french debconf templates update, proofread by the debian-l10n-french mailing list contributors. If you do not already use it, you might consider using the podebconf-report-po utility, which helps warning translators about changes when you modify some debconf templates in your packages. The usual policy when using it is sending a warning to translators when you plan to upload a version of your package with debconf templates changes (even typo corrections). Then leave about one week for them to update their files (several translation teams have a QA process which requires time). podebconf-report-po will take care of sending the translators the needed material as well as getting the translators adresses from the PO files. All you have to do is just using the utility..:-) Example use (from your package build tree): $ podebconf-report-po This will go through debian/po/*.po files, find those needing an update, extract the translators data from these files and prepare a mail to send to these translators (you can also use the --languageteam switch to also mail the mail addresses listed in Language-Team field). You can also use this utility to request for new translations: $ podebconf-report-po --call This will send a mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with all the needed information and material for new translators to add new languages to your supported languages. If you apply this policy, please forget about these remarks, of courseThis message is generic..:-) -- System Information: Debian Release: lenny/sid APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable'), (1, 'experimental') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.6.22-2-686 (SMP w/1 CPU core) Locale: LANG=fr_FR.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=fr_FR.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash # Translation of sympa debconf templates to French # Copyright (C) 2001-2007 Christian Perrier [EMAIL PROTECTED] # This file is distributed under the same license as the sympa package. # msgid msgstr Project-Id-Version: fr\n Report-Msgid-Bugs-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] POT-Creation-Date: 2007-09-19 06:36+0200\n PO-Revision-Date: 2007-01-20 18:08+0100\n Last-Translator: Christian Perrier [EMAIL PROTECTED]\n Language-Team: French [EMAIL PROTECTED]\n MIME-Version: 1.0\n Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8\n Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit\n X-Generator: KBabel 1.11.4\n #. Bug#443115: seahorse-agent should start after gpg-agent and ssh-agent, and not start if both available

I have gpg-agent installed and I don't want seahorse-agent replacing it; same with ssh-agent. Doesn't seahorse start after gpg-agent then? IIRC the stuff from Xsession.d starts from the highest to the lowest number. (see dbus which has a higher number than seahorse but starts first) What you want is probably seahorse before gpg-agent which is impossible (as seahorse needs dbus). I really don't know what to do about this bug, you're not the first who tells me something like that. Actually, no, I really do want seahorse to start after gpg-agent and ssh-agent. I forgot that while the scripts in Xsession.d run from lowest to highest, the ones like gpg-agent and ssh-agent prefix themselves to $STARTUP and thus run from highest to lowest; thus, seahorse-agent really does start after gpg-agent and ssh-agent. That leaves the other half of this bug: I want seahorse-agent to not start at all if it can see from the environment that the session already has gpg-agent and ssh-agent running. Which then will probably yield to a bug like your's, only the other way around. Users that want seahorse can only use it then when removing gpg-agent and ssh-agent.

If this explanation is unsatisfactory and you have not received a better one in a separate message then please contact John Goerzen [EMAIL PROTECTED] by replying to this email. It would be nice if you could elaborate how you call that a fix. Yes, the mentioned empty paragraph doesn't exist anymore - but the new description isn't helpful neither. The long description is expected to contain of at least full sentences, which it doesn't. It says it lets one keep an eye on the status, where it doesn't explain in what way, and what kind of tray is meant, like I asked in my original message... Furthermore you doesn't seem to have touched the bacula-client description at all. It looks like this package is missing the prototype for gnome_vfs_unescape_string - not only that, but its also only passing one argument where two are required. Bug#435102: confirmed here (/dev/rtc timeout)
Hello Ondrej, On Tuesday, September 11, 2007 at 14:50:54 +0200, Ondrej Certik wrote: HWCLOCKPARS=--directisa How about using this by default so that I don't have to make this change manually? The --directisa RTC access method has some drawbacks: - It wastes processor cycles by busy-waiting for the clock tick, instead of sleep-waiting for the update ended interrupt. - It is in practice much less accurate in detecting this clock tick, as soon as the system is not purely idle. Busywaiting for a 2 milliseconds event, when at HZ=100 several timeslices of 10 ms can be preempted by other processes, well... this can happen to fail completely ;-). Note that Bryan Henderson's latest hwclock 2.30 uses memory locking and realtime priority to minimize this problem. - It can be used by root only. And it is dirty (!), because clean applications are expected to never access the hardware directly, but thru a device driver. So people using normal hardware and good kernels with proper RTC interrupts don't want to use --directisa. Setting it by default would work everywhere, but with degraded functionality for the majority. It would be a pity. I'm not sure what can be done. Perhaps: - Make HWCLOCKPARS=--directisa option easyier to find and setup. Propose it during installation. Set it inside a simple config file, sourced from /etc/init.d/hwclock.sh. See David's bug report #439593. - Enhance detection of interrupt failures, and enhance automatic fallback methods to detect tick in code. Today only few failure scenarios are detected, some are detected too late, and the fallback method (busywait for change of time) seems to be much less accurate than with --directisa itself (busywait for UIP fall). Testing this fallback method gave me the tick detected between 8 and 20 ms late, when normal methods stay in a 10 µs range... That's only 2000 times worse. - Check interrupt failure during installation script, and then install with --directisa option. But those are only random ideas: I can't test nor discuss this seriously, because none of my machines have interrupt problems. However I think we should not just fail, or poorly fallback. We should not require the impacted users to notice, understand, and fix the problem. Instead, we should detect and fix it ourselves. If not at runtime, then at install. Alain.

Testing this fallback method gave me the tick detected between 8 and 20 ms late, when normal methods stay in a 10 µs range... That's only 2000 times worse. - Check interrupt failure during installation script, and then install with --directisa option. Exactly this should be done - if the hwclock reports timeout, install directisa automatically. Exactly. As I said, detect if hwclock works during install and fix it automatically if it doesn't. But maybe it's easier to fix the real problem, see my question above. Ondrej

Package: amavisd-new Version: 1:2.4.2-6.1 Severity: normal Berkeley DB often has problems with lockers. This will stop the mail deliver on systems with amavisd-new enabled. Okay, so it seems that I resolved the XRandR issues by restarting fluxbox (see the thread I previously posted). So now I can reproduce the problem: Given two 1024x768 screens next to each other, which is a logical screen of 2048x768 pixels, the splash screen displays in the middle of that logical screen and thus in between the two monitors: xwininfo: Window id: 0x1cb win0 Absolute upper-left X: 784 Absolute upper-left Y: 204 Relative upper-left X: 784 Relative upper-left Y: 204 Width: 480 Height: 360 Depth: 24 Visual Class: TrueColor Border width: 0 Class: InputOutput Colormap: 0x20 (installed) Bit Gravity State: NorthWestGravity Window Gravity State: NorthWestGravity Backing Store State: NotUseful Save Under State: no Map State: IsViewable Override Redirect State: yes Corners: +784+204 -784+204 -784-204 +784-204 -geometry 480x360+784+204 jabref itself then restores the previous geometry, which is should not. So there are two things to do: 1. remove the functionality which stores and restores jabref's main window's geometry on shutdown/startup 2. tell the window manager to place the splash screen in the middle of the current head, rather than trying to figure out dimensions yourself. Bug#443285: not compatible with xserver-xorg 7.3

In what way is it not compatible? Thanks for your reply. :) I'm not sure if a recompilation against the new xorg is required. Is this some problem in libslang, or is it a problem you can fix? This is the correct behaviour as the version script is missing. It is a bug in the libslang-pic package to not include them. Martin Werthmoeller schrieb am Donnerstag, den 20. September 2007: Package: amavisd-new Version: 1:2.4.2-6.1 Severity: normal Berkeley DB often has problems with lockers. This will stop the mail deliver on systems with amavisd-new enabled. The bug will only appear if db_enabled is set to a true value, which is the default setting at the debian package. After disabling the berkeley db with $enable_db = 0; $enable_global_cache = 0; the errors disappeared. The performance will not decrease appreciably. Thus I would recommend to disable this settings in the package default. I don't this that this qualifys as a bug, so I will lower the severity to wishlist for this bug. Alex P.S.: in fact switching off bdb makes amavis significant faster, so I will think about it. On the other hand is changing the default behaviour of a server a serious thing where all pros and cons should be calculated carefully. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#443264: closed by Nicolas Fran??ois [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Re: [Pkg-shadow-devel] Bug#443264: passwd: useradd ignores default group and creates usergroups instead)
On Thu, Sep 20, 2007 at 09:06:05AM +, Debian Bug Tracking System wrote: This was fixed in the version 1:4.0.18.1-8 of shadow (and passwd). This version is not available on Etch. In the Etch version, the default behavior, when -g is not specified, is always to use/create the primary user group with the same name as the user. The 1:4.0.18.1-8 version introduced a -n flag to disable this, and use the group specified in the configuration file. Would it be possible to modify this slightly to say that if a GROUP= line is given in the configuration file then -n is implied and that is used, otherwise make a new one? It seems to me to be slightly better behaviour as it, at least to me, easily follows from the actual act of setting a single, solid group. The recommended tool for the creation of users in a Debian system is adduser (useradd is a low level tool). I would recommend you to use this tool. The USERGROUPS and USERS_GID variables of /etc/adduser.conf will probably satisfy your needs (not tested, but it would make sense). Aye. Just that this change is chucking away around a decades+ worth of learnt behaviour. The above modification would be a good compromise as it allows one to set the command for the old behaviour or keep the new. -- To the extent that we overreact, we proffer the terrorists the greatest tribute. - High Court Judge Michael Kirby -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe.
