Okay, to make it easier to not loose track of this I properly reassigned this to dpkg-dev and split it in two issues: one for dpkg-buildpackage and one for dpkg-shlibdeps. Contrary to what Hector forwarded from you on -devel, the changes for dpkg-shlibdeps are relatively independant from the rest and since I've been doing the work on dpkg-shlibdeps I can review and merge a good patch of you. Bug#453268: decoupling of glib bindings from gtk2 bindings
Package: liblablgtk2-ocaml-dev Version: 2.10.0-2 Severity: normal Glib bindings are tightly coupled with gtk2 bindings in lablgtk2. This means that even only needing some of the glib stuff (e.g. UTF8 functions as it happened to me) one has to link in a substantial part of the whole lablgtk2. Though less relevant than with other programming languages, where Glib is much more useful since it provides also data structures that in OCaml come for free, the ability to use the Glib module alone is relevant also to OCaml IMO. Fix this requires not only providing a separate META file for Glib, but also reworking upstream packaging, since the Glib module is shipped as package in the big lablgtk2 cma, some goes for the dll stub. Filing the bug as a reminder of this feature request. Bug#434861: [hppa] Stops responding; does not cleanly finish
Hi Daniel, Note that this issue on hppa is also different from #431054 and friends because it does not solve itself with recent kernels. I'm now running 2.6.22 on that box, but the issue is still there. This really is getting rather annoying. Unfortunately I lack the skills needed to trace this myself, but if it would help getting this issue traced/resolved, I can give you full access to my hppa box. Cheers, FJP P.S. I'm currently also seeing occasional fairly random segfaults in aptitude on amd64 :-( A simple restart of aptitude is always sufficient to continue. Bug#327443: X Forwarding broken on IPv6 systems without X11UseLocalhost
I have encountered exactly the problem reported in this bug and it is causing me problems, it also appears to effect ssh port forwarding in ssh, the setup was working perfectly until Novemeber 6th 2007 when I ran an apt-get upgrade. The sshd_config file has : X11Forwarding yes X11UseLocalhost no GatewayPorts yes And when I try and open a connection I can see the port is open on the ipv6 interface : tcp6 0 0 :::6010 :::*LISTEN But nothing on the ipv4 interface. I also get the same error when trying to forward a port, my client ssh attempts to forward port 6005 on the server to port 6000 locally. Again I can see the ipv6 interface : tcp6 0 0 :::6005 :::*LISTEN But nothing for ipv4, I also get : Nov 28 09:26:05 testserver sshd[7457]: error: bind: Address already in use In the auth.log file although netstat -an shows nothing listening and I can run nc on the port fine after logging in If I turn on X11UseLocalHost then my X forwading works, it has no effect on port forwarding though. Bug#453279: xserver-xorg-video-intel: severe performance penalty with newer intel driver
Package: xserver-xorg-video-intel Version: 2:2.2.0-1 Severity: important Hello, I've noticed that, since I upgraded to version 2.2.0-1, Xorg is extremely slow. I use fvwm, and I like to switch fast from on desk to another. With version 2.1.0, this is reasonably fast, and I get limited by the speed at which X works only if I really ask it (playing with the keyboard to change fast). However, with version 2.2.0, this gets extremely slow. For *one* change of desk, xorg can take up to 90% of the processor. This is really annoying, as for instance when I switch to a desk containing a firefox instance, it takes several seconds to get displayed completely. It really was instantaneous with version 2.1.0. I set severity to important, as it makes it unpleasant altogether to work on my computer (it's not dreadful, but affects virtually every package). Regards, Vincent Fourmond PS: version numbers below might be wrong as I did switch back to the 2.1.0-1 version, as I can't really work with the newer. Bug#453267: Bug#439979: dpkg-dev: Please support removal of dpkg-cross diversions
Raphael Hertzog wrote: On Tue, 28 Aug 2007, Neil Williams wrote: As outlined on the debian-dpkg lists, I've been testing the removal of the dpkg-cross diversions of dpkg-buildpackage and dpkg-shlibdeps during the rewrite of dpkg-cross and I now have two patches (slightly modified from the last ones posted to the list) that I would like to see in dpkg-dev as a beginning to a process to merge dpkg-cross back into dpkg. I thought Guillem wanted to review the use of /usr/arm-linux-gnu/lib and /usr/arm-linux-gnu/include ? I do have perl code that solves the problem (used it to cross build GPE for Emdebian) involving adding search directories to LD_LIBRARY_PATH but I wasn't sure if Guillem was looking at a different implementation for those directories. CC'ing debian-dpkg to find out. Guillem: what are your plans for the diversion replacements? Are you planning on changing the current usage of /usr/$arch/include etc. or just changing the way that the diversion used to use a temporary directory of symlinks or something else? Should Raphael and I work on a solution for dpkg-shlibdeps using LD_LIBRARY_PATH using the example below? If you don't provide the patch, it'll take some more time but I'll get around to it sometime. This is the core of what would be the patch: my $crossprefix = check_arch($arch); #(check_arch takes a user-specified string and checks that #dpkg-architecture supports it, then returns the triplet so for 'arm', # e.g. $crossprefix=arm-linux-gnu; my @librarypaths = qw( /lib /usr/lib /lib32 /usr/lib32 /lib64 /usr/lib64 /emul/ia32-linux/lib /emul/ia32-linux/usr/lib ); my @shlibdeps = ( ${crossprefix}/lib, /usr/${crossprefix}/lib, /${crossprefix}/lib32, /usr/${crossprefix}/lib32, /${crossprefix}/lib64, /usr/${crossprefix}/lib64, /emul/ia32-linux/lib, /emul/ia32-linux/usr/lib ); my $libpath = join (:, @librarypaths) . join (:, @shlibdeps); $ENV{LD_LIBRARY_PATH}.=$libpath; That is what I'm using with the current dpkg-shlibdeps from 1.14.11 and AFAICT it is fine (providing that the cross paths are added to the standard paths and not replace them or perl gets confused). If this method is ok, I'll prepare the patch against 1.14.11. -- Neil Williams = http://www.data-freedom.org/ http://www.nosoftwarepatents.com/ http://www.linux.codehelp.co.uk/ signature.asc Description: OpenPGP digital signature

On this other box, when the first window is opened, I get like 1 second. Then retry, still 1 second. I open another tab, try there, and get 2 seconds (wich is strange, I agree). Then retry in this tab, and 1 second. Same thing if I open another window. Maximizing the window, tab #1, running the benchmark takes 2 seconds again. If I maximize the window, it's more like 6 seconds (wich is a lot but doesn't really surprise me) Unmaximizing the window, the time goes up to 8 seconds. Unmaximizing, it's back to 1 sec. In another instance with eight tabs, it takes up to 47 seconds**, but I haven't been able to reliably reproduce it in other windows, though it's happened more than once. My X session begins with an autosaved 'xfce4-terminal' session with 8 tabs, that's the 47 seconds one. Resizing the window fixes it, for a while. Opening 8 tabs doesn't change anything. First run is 2 sec, latter runs are 1 sec. Can you try to reproduce with gnome-terminal, too? Bug#453283: CVE-2007-6061: possible symlink attack
Package: audacity Severity: grave Tags: security Justification: user security hole Hi The following CVE[0] has been issued against audacity. CVE-2007-6061: Audacity 1.3.2 creates a temporary directory with a predictable name without checking for previous existence of that directory, which allows local users to cause a denial of service (recording deadlock) by creating the directory before Audacity is run. Bug#390712: gnutls
FYI, the upcoming GnuTLS 2.1.7 have a new API where applications can provide a string to gnutls to set protocol priorities, and it can be used to disable padding. An application could call: gnutls_priority_set_direct (session, NORMAL:%COMPAT, NULL, 0); Instead of calling gnutls_set_default_priority(). This will do the same, but will also disable padding. The application could even get this string from the user or a configuration file, so that not all users are exposed to the vulnerability by default. Users that want to disable padding could then change 'NORMAL' into 'NORMAL:%COMPAT' manually. /Simon Nikos Mavrogiannopoulos [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: OpenSSL does not support random padding. They handle TLS 1.0 padding exactly as SSL 3.0, thus this issue does not occur there. I believe that random padding is important feature that avoids statistical attacks on the data, so it's enabled by default in gnutls. On 11/5/07, Simon Josefsson [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Nikos wrote: Ok it seems that with the help of Hanno Wagner I managed to debug this issue. These clients fail to understand TLS 1.0 record packets with a padding added. This only occurs when using non stream ciphers (i.e. not arcfour) and does not occur when using SSL 3.0 which does not allow such padding. So one point is for users of these devices to report that as bug. However a fix in gnutls is not easy to do. If we disable the random padding in TLS 1.0 we do disable a nice feature of TLS that protects against statistical attacks. Thus I'd be against such a fix. Why doesn't this problem happen with OpenSSL? Does it MAC padding under some circumstances? Could GnuTLS do the same? /Simon -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

On Tue, 27 Nov 2007 15:57, [EMAIL PROTECTED] said: Severity: serious I doubt that this is a serious problem. The option to install gpg suid(root) has been there for nearly a decade. gpg is diligent to drop suid as soon as possible (after mlock and even before parsing options) and even checks that this has been done before doing any file access. 1) bugs in gnupg will potentially allow for rights-escalation by restricted users Right, problems should be minimized if possible. 2) Setuid flag was necessary for backwards-compatibilty with 2.4.x kernels which are no longer supported by etch anyway, the flag can therefore be removed If this is the case, it should not be installed suid anymore. Package: libclass-mop-perl Version: 0.45-1 Severity: serious As seen in #453218 and others, libclass-mop-perl 0.45 broke libmoose-perl. Bug#453291: zephyr: [debconf_rewrite] Debconf templates and debian/control review
Package: zephyr Version: N/A Severity: normal Tags: patch Dear Debian maintainer, On Wednesday, November 07, 2007, I notified you of the beginning of a review process concerning debconf templates for zephyr. The debian-l10n-english contributors have now reviewed these templates, and the proposed changes are attached to this bug report. Please review the suggested changes are suggested, and if you have any objections, let me know in the next 3 days. Please try to avoid uploading zephyr with these changes right now. The second phase of this process will begin on Saturday, December 01, 2007, when I will coordinate updates to translations of debconf templates. The existing translators will be notified of the changes: they will receive an updated PO file for their language. Simultaneously, a general call for new translations will be sent to the debian-i18n mailing list. Both these calls for translations will request updates to be sent as individual bug reports. That will probably trigger a lot of bug reports against your package, but these should be easier to deal with. The call for translation updates and new translations will run until about Saturday, December 22, 2007. Please avoid uploading a package with fixed or changed debconf templates and/or translation updates in the meantime. Of course, other changes are safe. Please note that this is an approximative delay, which depends on my own availability to process this work and is influenced by the fact that I simultaneously work on many packages. Around Sunday, December 23, 2007, I will contact you again and will send a final patch summarizing all the updates (changes to debconf templates, updates to debconf translations and new debconf translations). CVE-2007-6039: PHP 5.2.5 and earlier allows context-dependent attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) via a long string in (1) the domain parameter to the dgettext function, the message parameter to the (2) dcgettext or (3) gettext function, the msgid1 parameter to the (4) dngettext or (5) ngettext function, or (6) the classname parameter to the stream_wrapper_register function. Package: initramfs-tools Version: 0.85h I'm using initramfs-tools and live-initramfs to boot my FAI environment. Therefore I have to append boot=live and root=/dev/nfs to get the live-initramfs scripts executed. If I use this order boot=live root=/dev/nfs it does not work, since the script /usr/share/initramfs-tools/init defines boot=nfs when parsing root=/dev/nfs. So my definition of boot=live get overwritten. Bug#453295: three more CVEs
Hi There were three more CVEs[0][1][2] issued for php5. CVE-2007-5900: PHP before 5.2.5 allows local users to bypass protection mechanisms configured through php_admin_value or php_admin_flag in httpd.conf by using ini_set to modify arbitrary configuration variables, a different issue than CVE-2006-4625. CVE-2007-5898: The (1) htmlentities and (2) htmlspecialchars functions in PHP before 5.2.5 accept partial multibyte sequences, which has unknown impact and attack vectors, a different issue than CVE-2006-5465. CVE-2007-5899: The output_add_rewrite_var function in PHP before 5.2.5 rewrites local forms in which the ACTION attribute references a non-local URL, which allows remote attackers to obtain potentially sensitive information by reading the requests for this URL, as demonstrated by a rewritten form containing a local session ID. Thank you for your work. The changes are useful and relevant, and I'll accept them all. Please feel free to continue to the next phase of the process. Please review the suggested changes are suggested, and if you have any objections, let me know in the next 3 days. There's one syntactical problem, I think the very last line of the patch should add a space to the beginning of the line: +and is fully internationalized and localized in dozens of languages. Around Sunday, December 23, 2007, I will contact you again and will send a final patch summarizing all the updates (changes to debconf templates, updates to debconf translations and new debconf translations). Fine, I'll try to make an upload during the Christmas days :-) thanks for your work on this. Thijs
Bug#453296: MacBook: cannot assign right mouse click to lower Enter key
Package: xserver-xorg Version: 1:7.3+7 Severity: normal The CD MacBook keyboard only has a single (left) mouse button below the touchpad, so I like to assign the right mouse click function to the lower Enter key (KP_Enter) with the commands xmodmap -e keycode 108 = Pointer_Button3 xkbset m These commands have been put in a script in .kde/Autostart. This setup has worked fine until a recent upgrade of X, now there is no response from hitting the lower Enter key. I have included the output from hitting the left mouse button (which works) and the right mouse button (which doesn't). It appears that there is a spurious extra pair of ButtonPress/Release events in the latter case... I have always specified the keyboard as pc104; changing this to pc105, macbook78 or macbook79 makes no difference. The Mouse Navigation with numpad feature has not been enabled in KDE Settings/ Peripherals/Mouse. Enabling it (and commenting the above xkbset command) makes no difference either. There is no keypad entry in the /etc/X11 subtree; copying it from /usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols to /etc/X11/xkb/synbols and changing all occurrences of KP_Enter to Pointer_Button3 makes no difference either. -- Package-specific info: Contents of /var/lib/x11/X.roster: xserver-xorg /var/lib/x11/X.md5sum does not exist. Bug#451799: new evince cannot display Japanese characters correctly
However I don't think there is anything copyrightable in these files; they only contain series of numbers that describe the mappings. Do you people think it could be suitable for main? (Please follow-up on -legal only for licensing discussions.) Ondrej, are you willing - if the legal problems are settled out - to package it? Otherwise I guess me or any of the co-maintainers could do it, the packaging is absolutely trivial. It's already packaged in pkg-freedesktop SVN, but it was rejected by ftp-masters due licensing problems. Bug#314334: apt-get on jffs2 / disabling cacheing completely
Hit this apt relying on shared writeable issue today with a jffs2 issue. N800/Maemo seem to have got around this by (I think using an older version of apt?); it's all a bit messy and could really do with handling transparently within apt. First messages I found on this were from 2001, over at handhelds.org. Another option may just be to skipping the cacheing completely---it's probably a bit unnecessary on flash devices with (relatively low) seek times. -Paul -- Why do one side of a triangle when you can do all three. Thus if I hold for example my graphics driver because the new versions are broken I can no longer use u on the X11 folder in the tree view because it marks the graphics driver for upgrade as well. The hold flag should really hold the package in its current state as described in the help until un-held. If I set packages to a hold state, they seem to be held properly. Perhaps there are some packages that depend on newer versions of the packages that you have held? Daniel The scenario I am talking about; 1) hold xorg-video-ati (or whatevet it is called right now) 2) close aptitude 3) open aptitude, open the upgradable packages subtree, locate the (still closed) X11 subtree 4) press u on the X11 subtree result: the video driver is marked for upgrade if I manually find it and say it should be left as is there is no dependency problem expected: the driver is left as is. If I marked the package to be held in current state it is because I do not want it upgraded. Thanks Michal -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Maybe it's by design, but it took me quite some time to find the capset() call in the strace, which I can at least blame for this behaviour. Or maybe I'm wrong. It drops everything but capture capability, this is a hard call but given the successive security problems with wireshark I believe it is safer not to allow anything else. Perhaps it would be nice to add a --dont-drop-capabilities flag; I won't make it this week but I'll keep the report open so I don't forget about it. Hmm. Perhaps the error message could mention this. And setuid invocation (real uid != effective uid) could also be taken into account. Or maybe it is, currently, I didn't test. No, it is almost instantly. The same when shutting down or rebooting: it reads Setting up ALSA...done. And, after prompting the done, it stays around 15 seconds. *But, it is alsa, and not the next process, to blame*. I know it because in one computer, the next process to stop is the bluetooth.
