Bug#458164: Lintian should not suggest the Makefile test for packages that use a static Makefile
Andrea Colangelo [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: Package: lintian Version: 1.23.41 Severity: wishlist Running lintian on a .dsc built from a package that has a static Makefile (i.e: doesn't use Autoconf or .configure) shows the following warning: foo source: debian-rules-ignores-make-clean-error Only if you ignore the exit status of make distclean The -i option shows a deeper description of the problem and suggest to change lines like this: -$(MAKE) distclean into: [ ! -f Makefile ] || $(MAKE) distclean This is not really required, given that for a static Makefile the test is always false and make distclean is never actually exercised. I think you're reading the test backwards. In that case, make distclean would always be run. If the package has a static Makefile, why would make distclean ever fail? What problem are you solving by ignoring the exit status from it? Normally, the solution would be to just remove the - in front of that line. -- Russ Allbery ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) http://www.eyrie.org/~eagle/ -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. An updated version of the package (with new upstream version 5.6.48) is now pending upload. Thanks a lot! Also, there are several important libraries in the SWI-Prolog packages directory that currently seem not to be available in Debian, most notably: pldoc (!), plunit, I asked for plunit already in May in the follow-up to the now closed bug 425580: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=425580#20 clpqr, and chr. Bug#457475: log details
Sorry for the delay. Some notes: X crashes completely, since I can reboot with Ctrl-Alt_Del. The crash apparently requires large buffers, since switching to a full screen gqview desktop or mozilla with a text page will not trigger it, while switching to xpdf with graphics or a browser page with a large jpgs will do it. Please send the whole output of /usr/share/bug/xserver-xorg/script 31 so that we see your full config and log (reportbug would have done that for you automatically). Actually, I filed that bug with reportbug in 'novice' settings and it did not, as you noticed. Perhaps another bug report? I should have read the man page first, probably. Sorry for being a klutz. We need a sample to debug this further. also, the database files are not portable among architectures (a database file created on an x86 host will not work on an amd64 host, unlike the claims in the documentation). Without any reply from its submitter, I will take over this ITP (no answer from my previous mail since Jan 07 nor to the other mail from someone else on Apr 2006). * Package name: idzebra Version : 2.0.22 Upstream Author : Adam Dickmeiss, Heikki Levanto and Sebastian Hammer (Index Data enterprise) * URL : http://www.indexdata.dk/zebra/ * License : GPL (v2 or above) Programming Lang: C Description : general-purpose structured text indexing and retrieval engine IDZebra is a high-performance, general-purpose structured text indexing and retrieval engine. It reads structured records in a variety of input formats (eg. email, XML, MARC) and allows access to them through exact boolean search expressions and relevance-ranked free-text queries. Notes: * upstream (Index Data enterprise) propose debian packages. I will start from their work. I will host development on git.alioth.org so these packages can be team-maintained if someone (upstream or not) want to join. * upstream calls there packages idzebra, the software is called zebra, the tarball is called idzebra-tar.gz in a /zebra/ directory. Unless strong objection, I plan to follow upstream and call the binary packages idzebra-* and source package idzebra * zebra packaging is needed in order to package Koha (ITP #389876) * zebra build-depends on libyaz3-dev that is not yet accepted in main due to licenses issues that should be resolved quickly by upstream (license change or, if not possible, rewrite of the little problematic part) -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#458181: slib: tries to replace a directory with a symlink by just having the symlink in the package
Package: slib Version: 3a5-1 Severity: grave Justification: renders package uninstallable As the policy says: A directory will never be replaced by a symbolic link to a directory or vice versa; instead, the existing state (symlink or not) will be left alone and dpkg will follow the symlink if there is one. So even though the 3a5-1 package contains an (incorrect) symlink at /usr/share/slib/init after an upgrade from 3a4-4 /usr/share/slib/init remains a (now empty) directory. Hi Andreas, Andreas Tille schrieb: Since some time, there are packages of Libchipcard 4.x available in the archive, which are intended to replace Libchipcard 3.x. I already asked ftp-master for removal of libchipcard3 because its build dependencies aren't satisfyable anymore[1], but discovered now, that gnumed-client-de depends on it. Thanks for the hint. I changed the dependency to libchipcard-tools | libchipcard3-tools You should also change any call to /usr/bin/chipcard3-tool (provided by libchipcard3-tools) to /usr/bin/chipcard-tool (provided by libchipcard-tools). If you want to keep working both alternatives (using libchipcard3-tools or libchipcard-tools), you need to implement a fallback mechanism on your own. Yes, apparently you have Debian's experimental and my experimental repository on Alioth in your sources.list. And as AqBanking is currently available in both, aptitide gets confused (why ever). What would you recommend? If you need the experimental repository only for the purpose of installing the newest AqBanking packages you can safely drop Debian's experimental repository in your sources.list. Bug#458085: apache2.2-common: wrong permissions on /var/lock/apache2
Hi, On Sat, Dec 29, 2007 at 02:41:03AM +0100, Stefan Fritsch wrote: It was a bit unfortunate that the line had to be introduced in a stable point release and caused a behaviour change, but it was necessary to fix a different bug. You could at least test for the existence of /var/lock/apache2 and create it only if it's missing. If /var/lock/apache2 already exists just leave it alone and do not change its ownership. This is quite fragile (because of includes, etc.) and we don't want to do that. But it would make sense to either add a comment in apache.conf that /etc/init.d/apache2 needs to be changed as well, or to set the user via an envvar that can be used in both apache2.conf and the init script. If the initscript does not unconditionally change the permissions on /var/lock/apache2 then I'm fine with a comment in apache.conf. OTOH it could be nice to have an apachectl dump command that dumps the parsed apache configuration so scripting would be easier... * Marc Lehmann: We need a sample to debug this further. Ok, I will try to come up with a small archive of an environment (I can probably choose between x86 and amd64 - any preference?). I don't mind. amd64 is slightly easier for me, but not much. also, the database files are not portable among architectures (a database file created on an x86 host will not work on an amd64 host, unlike the claims in the documentation). The database files are portable. The environment isn't. Ah ok, that clears up this point then, for me, the whole environment were the files that constitute the database(s), but this makes sense then. Yes, the environment are the files with the funny names containing two underscores. By the way, portability across Berkeley DB versions a different matter: the environment format changes at each major release, the log file format may change, but the database file format stays mostly the same (except for the hash format, which was upgraded in 4.6). -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#458189: how to not install recommended packages?
Package: aptitude Version: 0.4.10-1+b1 I am trying to setup some minimal Debian box (i386). Starting from the set of packages provided by debootstrap I used aptitude to install jove. Even though Install recommended packages automatically was toggled off in aptitude's preferences, jove pulled in a lot of recommended (unwanted) packages including both sendmail and procmail, m4 and some others. The unwanted packages could be deselected later without loosing jove, so they were surely not necessary. So how comes that aptitude marked these recommended packages to be installed? Bug#457817: aptitude: sudo aptitude safe-upgrade wants to update to the same version over and over if the package is provided by different repositories in sources.list

This is a behaviour that might arise if you have two different repositories providing voth the same package in the same version... That might be it. Nice catch. The packages will go into unstable in the next few weeks, so you could also simply wait until all is smooth. If you believe we can close the bug now, please reply to [EMAIL PROTECTED] now (I have no objections). I am reassigning it to aptitude. Commenting the lines of your repository on Alioth in sources.list solved the problem for me. Bug#458152: libcomplearn-mod-ppmd: Embedded duplicate ppmd source
Hi Guillem, * Guillem Jover [EMAIL PROTECTED] [2007-12-29 14:26]: [...] If it is broken on 64-bit machines then I think I will need to remove it from the build. But that has yet to be demonstrated on this version. I am closing this bug until evidence to that effect comes to me. Just check the ppmd package. The patches should apply mostly cleanly, and there's no significant differences that would fix any 64 bit clean issue, there's also unaligned access fixes in the ppmd package not present in this one. The segfaults was one of the reasons I added a build time check for the binary, so that it would fail early and not provide broken packages. I added this to our list of embedded source code copies. Bug#149897: The bug you reported about ip route ... equalize ...
retitle 149897 equalize kernel patch not available for current kernels? thanks On lör, 2007-12-29 at 13:22 +0100, Andreas Henriksson wrote: Very good to hear this has resolved itself. The only thing that remains is the false statement in the documentation about having to patch the kernel. Lets treat this report as a bug against the documentation from now on. I'll try to dig some and see if I can find it which kernel version the support first appeared. It seems like the required patch[1] which implements the feature is only available for 2.4.18. As far as I can tell it only /looks/ like it works with current kernels, because the kernel has the RTM_F_EQUALIZE flag (but no actual implementation). The flag has been there since atleast 2.4.0. man 7 rtnetlink says: RTM_F_EQUALIZE a multicast equalizer (not yet implemented) grepping linux 2.6.22 source for RTM_F_EQUALIZE only gets a single hit, the definition. It's not actually used anywhere. ./include/linux/rtnetlink.h:#define RTM_F_EQUALIZE 0x400 /* Multipath equalizer: NI */ (I guess NI in the comment means Not Implemented.) I haven't found out why the patch hasn't been merged, but I did find some discussion[2] between Guus Sliepen (original patch author?) and Patrick McHardy which seems to mention some of the problems in it. One of those might be the reason it never got merged in mainline. So. Updating the documentation to state the fact that the required kernel patch doesn't exist (for kernels supported by Debian) doesn't seem very useful. Possibly the support for equalize in iproute should be dropped completely since it's never been part of any official kernel release, and since it hasn't been solved in all these years noone will probably ever implement this. I'll ask upstream [1] http://www.trash.net/~kaber/equalize/ [2] http://www.ussg.iu.edu/hypermail/linux/kernel/0203.2/1314.html -- Regards, Andreas Henriksson

Bug#458201: gzip: zless does not work on non-regular files
Package: gzip Version: 1.3.5-15 Severity: normal As already noted in Bug #407278, zless does not work on pipes when called without arguments. However, this is not the whole story: zless actually does not work on anything except regular files: zless - -- fails to decompress zless /dev/stdin-- not a regular file, use -f (OK) zless -f /dev/stdin -- fails to decompress zless -f /tmp/named-fifo -- fails to decompress This is rather annoying and also incompatible with other Linux distributions, including previous releases of Debian (zless on pipes used to work in Woody), so I believe that it really should be fixed. I agree with the maintainer reasoning in #407278 that zless should be as close in its usage to zless as possible, but it should not be at the expense of breaking special cases. A proper fix is probably to teach less to call LESSOPEN even for non-regular files (maybe only when given a special option). -- System Information: Debian Release: 4.0 APT prefers stable APT policy: (500, 'stable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.6.23.9 Locale: LANG=C, LC_CTYPE=cs_CZ.ISO-8859-2 (charmap=ISO-8859-2) Versions of packages gzip depends on: ii debianutils2.17 Miscellaneous utilities specific t ii libc6 2.3.6.ds1-13etch2 GNU C Library: Shared libraries gzip recommends no packages. -- no debconf information -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#458017: e2fsck.static: segmentation fault on old kernel
On Fri, Dec 28, 2007 at 12:23:29AM +0100, Jens Seidel wrote: using # LANG=C e2fsck.static /dev/sda1 I get FATAL: kernel too old Speicherzugriffsfehler (Speicherzugriffsfehler = segmentation fault) I use a Woody system with up-to-date e2fsck-static: $ uname -a Linux Erde 2.4.18-bf2.4 #1 Son Apr 14 09:53:28 CEST 2002 i686 unknown What kernel version do I need to be able to start e2fsck.static? Is this related to the crash? I take it you you installed the latest e2fsck-static package on a woody system, right? That package was meant for Debian etch or lenny systems, since the latest uuid library uses the Thread Local Storage feature, which requires a 2.6 linux kernel --- and Debian stopped support 2.4 kernels starting with Debian etch. If you recompile e2fsprogs on your woody system, it will notice that you are running on a system that doesn't support TLS, which will result in slightly less reliable UUIDD generation on a multiprocessor machine. But if all you want is e2fsck-static, that won't matter anyway. Hmm... it hadn't occurred to me that people running back-level Debian systems would attempt to take e2fsck-static and installing it on their systems. It makes sense that they would do that, since e2fsck-static has no libc dependencies so it would work (up until now) and that way they could get the benefit of the latest e2fsprogs updates/fixes easily. And it looks like woody backports stopped a while ago, so that wouldn't work as a solution. I will look into disabling TLS support for the bootfloopies udeb packages, and grab that version of e2fsck when building the e2fsck-static package. No promises, Debian has stopped supporting both woody and 2.6 kernels in general already, and there was never any guarantee that this would work, but if it's not too much trouble, I'll try to make it possible for e2fsck-static to be installed on old 2.4 based systems. In the meantime, if you rebuild e2fsprogs yourself, that should work for you. Regards, - Ted -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble?
