Bug#458164: Lintian should not suggest the Makefile test for packages that use a static Makefile

2007-12-29 Thread Russ Allbery
Andrea Colangelo [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:

 Package: lintian
 Version: 1.23.41
 Severity: wishlist

Running lintian on a .dsc built from a package that has a static
Makefile (i.e: doesn't use Autoconf or .configure) shows the following
 warning:
 foo source: debian-rules-ignores-make-clean-error

Only if you ignore the exit status of make distclean

The -i option shows a deeper description of the problem and suggest to
 change lines like this:
  -$(MAKE) distclean
 into:
  [ ! -f Makefile ] || $(MAKE) distclean

This is not really required, given that for a static Makefile the test
is always false and make distclean is never actually exercised.

I think you're reading the test backwards. In that case, make distclean
would always be run.

If the package has a static Makefile, why would make distclean ever fail?
What problem are you solving by ignoring the exit status from it?
Normally, the solution would be to just remove the - in front of that
line.

Unfortunately the ssh session times out, since the install takes
over 2 hours and I walked away.

I wonder if this is really a problem with the installer rather than
the config settings of your ssh client.

I strongly support this.

Bug#458169: libiptcdata: priority extra

2007-12-29 Thread David Paleino
Package: libiptcdata
Severity: normal

Hi,
is there any particular reason why this package has priority extra?

This gives some warnings about gthumb, which depends on libiptcdata0, which is
priority optional instead:

http://qa.debian.org/debcheck.php?dist=unstablepackage=gthumb

I'm going to adopt that package, so I'm looking for any problem it might have.

Kindly,
David

Bug#458167: crash when mount to a remote slower device

2007-12-29 Thread LI Daobing
Package: sshfs
Version: 1.7-2.1
Severity: normal

--- Please enter the report below this line. ---

Hello,

How to reproduce:

the machine A have a glusterfs[0] mount at /mnt/gf
the machine B use `sshfs A:/mnt/gf /mnt/gfB` to mount it.

[0] www.gluster.org/docs/index.php/GlusterFS

then under /mnt/gfB, run `dd if=/dev/zero of=zero', you will recieve [1] and
crashed. And then the /mnt/gfB is auto umounted.

the full gdb trace in [2].

I think you also can reproduce this when machine A has a not-so-fast device,
for example, a USB 1.0 disk.

Bug#458168: amarok: how to enable transcode before transferring isn't documented

2007-12-29 Thread sean finney
Package: amarok
Version: 1.4.7-1+b3
Severity: normal

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

i have a collection in ogg files that i'd like to have dynamically
converted to mp3 files when syncing with an ipod. i see a checkbox
option to transcode music before transferring to device which i'm
assuming is supposed to do this, only the option is greyed out with no
information on how to enable it. README.Debian or package
suggestions/recommends don't point anywhere.

i found soundkonverter{-amarok} which looks like it's maybe supposed to
take care of it, but some initial poking/prodding with that hasn't been
successful...

thanks
sean

wrongly because it already contains absolute coordinates.

functions

Bug#457475: log details

2007-12-29 Thread Rene Kita

Sorry for the delay.

Some notes: X crashes completely, since I can reboot with Ctrl-Alt_Del.
The crash apparently requires large buffers, since switching to a full screen
gqview desktop or mozilla with a text page will not trigger it, while switching
to
xpdf with graphics or a browser page with a large jpgs will do it.

Please send the whole output of
   /usr/share/bug/xserver-xorg/script 31
so that we see your full config and log (reportbug would have done that for
you automatically).

Actually, I filed that bug with reportbug in 'novice' settings and it did not,
as you noticed. Perhaps another bug report? I should have read the man page
first,
probably. Sorry for being a klutz.

Here's the log output right after the crash - after a bit of blind fiddling:

 yes, please upload.

Unrar-nonfree is still vulnerable after last etch update. Maybe somebody

Bug#458134: [Pkg-db-devel] Bug#458134: db4.6-util: segfaults and othe rproblems

2007-12-29 Thread Florian Weimer
* Marc Lehmann:

in short, 4.6 seems to be pretty hosed, the same app has worked fine with
db4.5 and db4.4 (the app still works with 4.6, but the utilities don't).

We need a sample to debug this further.

also, the database files are not portable among architectures (a database
file created on an x86 host will not work on an amd64 host, unlike the
 claims in the documentation).

The database files are portable. The environment isn't.

Well, thank you - for the help with this! :-)

 Notes:
 - The change required was to add perm:0770 option:upriv to each share
 line in /etc/netatalk/AppleVolumes.default.
 - The working options keyword is option (singular), which is different
from the documentation in the file itself and in the AppleVolumes.default
man page, both of which say the keyword is options.

that's interesting.

I'll preserve this as a separate bug.

(I tried locating the place in the source code to verify the actual name
used, but got lost finding ny way around...)

Oh, and another peculiarity: I discovered yesterday that despite my
promises, the unofficial test binaries I provided was _not_ compiled
against openssl. Some claim that MacOS 10.5.1 does not work at all
without it - but you succeeded anyway. Did you recompile, or are you
willing to reveal your working authentication setup?

Kind regards,

  - Jonas

You're using unstable. Sometimes it breaks. Deal with it, or stick

Bug#263830: ITP: idzebra -- general-purpose structured text indexing and retrieval engine

2007-12-29 Thread Vincent Danjean
Here is a 'new' ITP (added to #263830). Without any reply from its
submitter, I will take over this ITP (no answer from my previous mail
since Jan 07 nor to the other mail from someone else on Apr 2006).

* Package name: idzebra
  Version : 2.0.22
Upstream Author : Adam Dickmeiss, Heikki Levanto and Sebastian Hammer
(Index Data enterprise)
* URL : http://www.indexdata.dk/zebra/
* License : GPL (v2 or above)
  Programming Lang: C
Description : general-purpose structured text indexing and retrieval
engine
IDZebra is a high-performance, general-purpose structured text indexing
and retrieval engine. It reads structured records in a variety of input
formats (eg. email, XML, MARC) and allows access to them through exact
boolean search expressions and relevance-ranked free-text queries.

Notes:
* upstream (Index Data enterprise) propose debian packages. I will start
from their work. I will host development on git.alioth.org so these
packages can be team-maintained if someone (upstream or not) want to
  join.
* upstream calls there packages idzebra, the software is called zebra,
the tarball is called idzebra-tar.gz in a /zebra/ directory.
Unless strong objection, I plan to follow upstream and call the
binary packages idzebra-* and source package idzebra
* zebra packaging is needed in order to package Koha (ITP #389876)
* zebra build-depends on libyaz3-dev that is not yet accepted in main
due to licenses issues that should be resolved quickly by upstream
(license change or, if not possible, rewrite of the little problematic
  part)

Bug#458181: slib: tries to replace a directory with a symlink by just having the symlink in the package

2007-12-29 Thread Michal Politowski
Package: slib
Version: 3a5-1
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package uninstallable

As the policy says:
A directory will never be replaced by a symbolic link to a directory
or vice versa; instead, the existing state (symlink or not) will be
left alone and dpkg will follow the symlink if there is one.

So even though the 3a5-1 package contains an (incorrect) symlink at
/usr/share/slib/init
after an upgrade from 3a4-4 /usr/share/slib/init remains a (now empty)
directory.
This means that even if the symlink in the package was correct,
upgrade would still fail with
ERROR: Unable to find file slib/init/guile.init in load path

 depends on it.

Thanks for the hint. I changed the dependency to
 libchipcard-tools | libchipcard3-tools

You should also change any call to /usr/bin/chipcard3-tool (provided by
libchipcard3-tools) to /usr/bin/chipcard-tool (provided by
libchipcard-tools). If you want to keep working both alternatives (using
libchipcard3-tools or libchipcard-tools), you need to implement a
fallback mechanism on your own. Otherwise I suggest to depend only on
the new libchipcard-tools.

Bug#458180: python-pythonmagick: documentation would be nice

2007-12-29 Thread David Bremner
Package: python-pythonmagick
Version: 0.7-3

Hi;

1) /usr/share/doc/python-pythonmagick/README is not helpful for a debian

2) pydoc PythonMagick is pretty sparse: it just tells the names of methods and
gives their

That might be it. Nice catch.

Yes, apparently you have Debian's experimental and my experimental
repository on Alioth in your sources.list. And as AqBanking is currently
available in both, aptitide gets confused (why ever).

 What would you recommend?

If you need the experimental repository only for the purpose of
installing the newest AqBanking packages you can safely drop Debian's
experimental repository in your sources.list. The packages will go into
unstable in the next few weeks, so you could also simply wait until all
is smooth.

Bug#458085: apache2.2-common: wrong permissions on /var/lock/apache2

2007-12-29 Thread Gabor Gombas
Hi,

On Sat, Dec 29, 2007 at 02:41:03AM +0100, Stefan Fritsch wrote:

It was a bit unfortunate that the line had to be introduced in a
stable point release and caused a behaviour change, but it was

You could at least test for the existence of /var/lock/apache2 and
create it only if it's missing. If /var/lock/apache2 already exists just
leave it alone and do not change its ownership.

This is quite fragile (because of includes, etc.) and we don't want to
do that. But it would make sense to either add a comment in
apache.conf that /etc/init.d/apache2 needs to be changed as well, or
to set the user via an envvar that can be used in both apache2.conf
 and the init script.

If the initscript does not unconditionally change the permissions on
/var/lock/apache2 then I'm fine with a comment in apache.conf.

OTOH it could be nice to have an apachectl dump command that dumps
the parsed apache configuration so scripting would be easier...

Bug#458188: python-vobject: new upstream version

2007-12-29 Thread Bernd Zeimetz
Package: python-vobject
Version: 0.4.8-1
Severity: wishlist

Hi!

There's a new upstream version of vobject available, please update the
package. Unfortunately the package is not maintained in the python
modules team, so I can't help with this easily. I'm trying to get at
least all dependencies of Chandler into Debian and keep them uptodate,
so packaging the Chandler desktop can be started.

Thanks a lot,

Bernd

If that's the case I'll get you a debug package.

What kernel version is that? I can add this route to a vanilla kernel (OK,
it has the vserver patch but that doesn't really touch multipath routing).

I guess I must have done something else wrong. I tested this on Debian
Unstable with the regular packaged linux 2.6.22-3-amd64, but if I follow
the example you gave below it works for me too.

[...]
If I then ifconfig dummy0 up again, the dead half of the route comes back.
So I'd say this works as expected now.

Very good to hear this has resolved itself. The only thing that remains
is the false statement in the documentation about having to patch the
kernel. Lets treat this report as a bug against the documentation from
now on. I'll try to dig some and see if I can find it which kernel
version the support first appeared.

* Marc Lehmann:

We need a sample to debug this further.

Ok, I will try to come up with a small archive of an environment (I can
probably choose between x86 and amd64 - any preference?).

I don't mind. amd64 is slightly easier for me, but not much.

also, the database files are not portable among architectures (a database
file created on an x86 host will not work on an amd64 host, unlike the
  claims in the documentation).

The database files are portable. The environment isn't.

Ah ok, that clears up this point then, for me, the whole environment were
the files that constitute the database(s), but this makes sense then.

Yes, the environment are the files with the funny names containing two
underscores.

By the way, portability across Berkeley DB versions a different matter:
the environment format changes at each major release, the log file
format may change, but the database file format stays mostly the same
(except for the hash format, which was upgraded in 4.6).

Bug#458189: how to not install recommended packages?

2007-12-29 Thread Harald Dunkel

Package: aptitude
Version: 0.4.10-1+b1

I am trying to setup some minimal Debian box (i386). Starting from
the set of packages provided by debootstrap I used aptitude to install
jove. Even though Install recommended packages automatically was
toggled off in aptitude's preferences, jove pulled in a lot of
recommended (unwanted) packages including both sendmail and procmail,
m4 and some others.

The unwanted packages could be deselected later without loosing
jove, so they were surely not necessary. So how comes that aptitude
marked these recommended packages to be installed?

might arise if you have two different repositories providing voth the
same package in the same version...

The packages will go into
unstable in the next few weeks, so you could also simply wait until all
 is smooth.

If you believe we can close the bug now, please reply to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] now (I have no objections).

I am reassigning it to aptitude. Commenting the lines of your repository
on Alioth in sources.list solved the problem for me.

Thanks,

2007-12-29 Thread Martin Michlmayr
Package: shogun
Version: 0.4.4-1
Usertags: ftbfs-gcc-4.3

Your package fails to build with GCC 4.3. Version 4.3 has not been
released yet but I'm building with a snapshot in order to find errors
and give people an advance warning. GCC 4.3 now prints an error
message when C++ code contains duplicate function parameter names in
function prototypes, see
http://www.cyrius.com/journal/2007/12/07#gcc-4.3-multiple-params

You can reproduce this problem with gcc-snapshot from unstable. Note
that Red Hat, Novell and Ubuntu have done some work getting packages
to build with GCC 4.3 so there might be patches floating around
somewhere. I suggest you talk to your upstream.

While I'm not sure how CUPS implements its head cleaning, you might
find the escputil package is an acceptable alternative (assuming
your printer is an Epson inkjet).

Bug#458191: more info

If I open the device (eg cat /dev/ttyS0) the interrupt does show up.
Still no data from the device on it. If I connect the device to an other
serial port (e.g. an usb converter) I do see data so I don't think the
device connected is the problem.

belle:/home/folkert# cat /proc/tty/driver/serial

3: uart:unknown port:02E8 irq:3

the motherboard (it is an on-board port) is a gigabyte 965G-DS3.

I also tried an other device, nothing came in for that device too (known
good device; right as we speak it works fine on an other system).

I finally looked into this on ia64 (merulo.d.o), and the bug is in
libpadwalker-perl, in PadWalker::_upcontext(), which truncates the

Patch attached.

afaik, iceowl never build on that arch before ... however, this looks
more like buildd breakage than an issue with iceowl. Maybe just try to
respin ... as gcc complains about headers that do exist (as on other
archs)... and that are not arch dependent.

Builtin support for usplash would be nice to have, but is an added
feature, not an error in current implementation, so lowering severity.

If someone wants to help with this, the first step is probably to
hardcode the needed routines and file paths into the two configuration
files below /etc/yaird - working samples are much appreciated :-) .

Hi,

when testing mail with large messages, it it contraproductive to have
the entire body printed to standard output.

Please consider adding an option that allows not showing the DATA
phase in the output.

Greetings

Actually, the reason is that you reported the bug against xorg and this

Bug#458152: libcomplearn-mod-ppmd: Embedded duplicate ppmd source

2007-12-29 Thread Nico Golde
Hi Guillem,
* Guillem Jover [EMAIL PROTECTED] [2007-12-29 14:26]:
[...]
If it is broken on 64-bit machines then I think I will need to remove
it from the build. But that has yet to be demonstrated on this version.
I am closing this bug until evidence to that effect comes to me.

Just check the ppmd package. The patches should apply mostly cleanly,
and there's no significant differences that would fix any 64 bit
clean issue, there's also unaligned access fixes in the ppmd package
 not present in this one.

The segfaults was one of the reasons I added a build time check for
the binary, so that it would fail early and not provide broken
 packages.

I added this to our list of embedded source code copies.
Kind regards and thanks for the heads up.

Bug#457467: failures due to changed kernel interfaces is a feature, not a bug

Yaird tries very hard to only only build initial ramdisks that it is
confident will work. This causes failure each time the kernel changes
its boot-related hints in /sys or other places needed to safely resolve
booting needs of the new kernel from a running kernel.

It is not true that yaird breaks on every new kernel.

Current behaviour is a careful design decision, not a bug.

Sure each change needs an update to yaird. But the potential for these
kinds of bugs are not considered a bug by the maintainer of this
package.

Keeping this bugreport open until bug#457177 is resolved.

Please send the whole output of

Bug#149897: The bug you reported about ip route ... equalize ...

retitle 149897 equalize kernel patch not available for current kernels?

Very good to hear this has resolved itself. The only thing that remains
is the false statement in the documentation about having to patch the
kernel. Lets treat this report as a bug against the documentation from
now on. I'll try to dig some and see if I can find it which kernel
 version the support first appeared.

It seems like the required patch[1] which implements the feature is only
available for 2.4.18. As far as I can tell it only /looks/ like it works
with current kernels, because the kernel has the RTM_F_EQUALIZE flag
(but no actual implementation). The flag has been there since atleast
2.4.0.

man 7 rtnetlink says:
RTM_F_EQUALIZE a multicast equalizer (not yet implemented)

grepping linux 2.6.22 source for RTM_F_EQUALIZE only gets a single hit,
the definition. It's not actually used anywhere.

./include/linux/rtnetlink.h:#define RTM_F_EQUALIZE 0x400 /*
Multipath equalizer: NI */

(I guess NI in the comment means Not Implemented.)

I haven't found out why the patch hasn't been merged, but I did find
some discussion[2] between Guus Sliepen (original patch author?) and
Patrick McHardy which seems to mention some of the problems in it. One
of those might be the reason it never got merged in mainline.

So. Updating the documentation to state the fact that the required
kernel patch doesn't exist (for kernels supported by Debian) doesn't
seem very useful. Possibly the support for equalize in iproute should be
dropped completely since it's never been part of any official kernel
release, and since it hasn't been solved in all these years noone will
probably ever implement this. I'll ask upstream

The reason is that Firefox asks the server to create tons of pixmap to
store some images, textures, ... So maybe firefox is asking too much,
but the server should be able to refuse at some point and maybe even
drop some old pixmaps (not sure what it is supposed to do exactly these

Anyway, there are some memory leak fixed in the upcoming Xserver 1.4.1,

But with the current unstable version (6.7.197) and the experimental

This is probably because the preferred mode for your monitor is
1280x1024. Please send the output of xrandr.

Moreover, ctrl-+/- does not switch the resolution.

Yes, we have a bug report about this. I am not sure this is going to be
fixed. There are many RandR applets to change the resolution with 2
clicks, it's probably enough.

However, xrandr --verbose shows max resolution is 1600x1200.
But the kde
resolution switcher allows to choose a 1600x1200 resolution. Sadly this
resolution cannot be kept at restart of kde...

You need to use ModeLine+PreferredMode to get 1600x1200 at startup. Try
adding

   Option PreferredMode 1600x1200_75.00
to the Monitor section of your xorg.conf.

If it does not work, you might need something like
   Option Monitor-DVI-0 Flatron
in your Device section.

Let me know if it helps.

All details are in section III of

Bug#458201: gzip: zless does not work on non-regular files

2007-12-29 Thread Martin Mares
Package: gzip
Version: 1.3.5-15
Severity: normal

As already noted in Bug #407278, zless does not work on pipes when called
without arguments. However, this is not the whole story: zless actually
does not work on anything except regular files:

zless - -- fails to decompress
zless /dev/stdin-- not a regular file, use -f (OK)
zless -f /dev/stdin -- fails to decompress
zless -f /tmp/named-fifo -- fails to decompress

This is rather annoying and also incompatible with other Linux distributions,
including previous releases of Debian (zless on pipes used to work in Woody),
so I believe that it really should be fixed.

I agree with the maintainer reasoning in #407278 that zless should be as close
in its usage to zless as possible, but it should not be at the expense of
breaking special cases.

A proper fix is probably to teach less to call LESSOPEN even for non-regular
files (maybe only when given a special option).

Bug#458017: e2fsck.static: segmentation fault on old kernel

2007-12-29 Thread Theodore Tso

 FATAL: kernel too old

 (Speicherzugriffsfehler = segmentation fault)

 I use a Woody system with up-to-date e2fsck-static:
 $ uname -a
 Linux Erde 2.4.18-bf2.4 #1 Son Apr 14 09:53:28 CEST 2002 i686 unknown

What kernel version do I need to be able to start e2fsck.static?
Is this related to the crash?

I take it you you installed the latest e2fsck-static package on a
woody system, right? That package was meant for Debian etch or lenny
systems, since the latest uuid library uses the Thread Local Storage
feature, which requires a 2.6 linux kernel --- and Debian stopped
support 2.4 kernels starting with Debian etch.

If you recompile e2fsprogs on your woody system, it will notice that
you are running on a system that doesn't support TLS, which will
result in slightly less reliable UUIDD generation on a multiprocessor
machine. But if all you want is e2fsck-static, that won't matter
anyway.

Hmm... it hadn't occurred to me that people running back-level Debian
systems would attempt to take e2fsck-static and installing it on their
systems. It makes sense that they would do that, since e2fsck-static
has no libc dependencies so it would work (up until now) and that way
they could get the benefit of the latest e2fsprogs updates/fixes
easily.

And it looks like woody backports stopped a while ago, so that
wouldn't work as a solution.

I will look into disabling TLS support for the bootfloopies udeb
packages, and grab that version of e2fsck when building the
e2fsck-static package. No promises, Debian has stopped supporting
both woody and 2.6 kernels in general already, and there was never any
guarantee that this would work, but if it's not too much trouble, I'll
try to make it possible for e2fsck-static to be installed on old 2.4
based systems. In the meantime, if you rebuild e2fsprogs yourself,
that should work for you.

Regards,

- Ted
