Bug#461838: phamm: General update after the debconf review process
Dear Debian maintainer, On Thursday, January 03, 2008, I sent you a notification about the beginning of a review action on debconf templates for phamm. Then, I sent you a bug report with rewritten templates and announcing the beginning of the second phase of this action: call for translation updates. Translators have been working hard and here is now the result of their efforts. Please consider using it EVEN if you committed files to your development tree as long as they were reported. The attached tarball contains: - debian/changelog with the list of changes - debian/control with rewrites of packages' descriptions - debian/templates with all the rewritten templates file(s) - debian/po/*.po with all PO files (existing ones and new ones) As said, please use *at least* the PO files as provided here, preferrably over those sent by translators in their bug reports. All of them have been checked and reformatted. In some cases, formatting errors have been corrected. The patch.rfr file contains a patch for the templates and control file(s) alone. Please note that this patch applies to the templates and control file(s) of your package as of Thursday, January 03, 2008. If your package was updated in the meantime, I may have updated my reference copybut I also may have missed that. This is indeed why I suggested you do not modified such files while the review process was running, remember..:-) It is now safe to upload a new package version with these changes. Please notify me of your intents with regards to this. There is of course no hurry to update your package but feel free to contact me in case you would need sponsoring or any other action to fix this. -- patch.tar.gz Description: Binary data --- phamm.old/debian/phamm.templates2007-12-29 08:25:51.425700293 +0100 +++ phamm/debian/phamm.templates2008-01-21 07:43:10.048402036 +0100 @@ -1,51 +1,58 @@ +# These templates have been reviewed by the debian-l10n-english +# team +# +# If modifications/additions/rewording are needed, please ask +# [EMAIL PROTECTED] for advice. +# +# Even minor modifications require translation updates and such +# changes should be coordinated with translators and reviewers. + Template: phamm/ldap-server Type: string -_description: LDAP server host address: - Please enter the host name or the address of the LDAP server you want to - connect to. Bug#457044: Same problem with the new security update to linux-image-2.6.22-3-686
Hello, this morning, I had exactly the same problem while installing linux-image-2.6.22-3-686 (2.6.22-6.lenny1 Debian-Security:None/testing) The box didn't reboot. The last time it happened, this is how our distant hostmaster managed to correcte the problem : The technician had to boot the server using a live CD Linux. Then he made a dpkg-reconfigures on the kernel package, this made it possible to rebuild the initrd and to repair Lilo. Reading the apt-get session I had before the reboot, I think the problem could be here : ? The kernel version running is the same as the one being installed ? ? ? ? You are attempting to install a kernel version that is the same as the version you are currently running (version 2.6.22-3-686). The modules list is quite ? ? likely to have been changed, and the modules dependency file /lib/modules/2.6.22-3-686/modules.dep needs to be re-built. It can not be built correctly right? ? now, since the module list for the running kernel are likely to be different from the kernel installed. I am creating a new modules.dep file, but that may ? ? not be correct. It shall be regenerated correctly at next reboot. ? ? ? ? I repeat: you have to reboot in order for the modules file to be created correctly. Until you reboot, it may be impossible to load some modules. Reboot as ? ? soon as this install is finished (Do not reboot right now, since you may not be able to boot back up until installation is over, but boot immediately ? ? after). I can not stress that too much. You need to reboot And here : Finding valid ramdisk creators. Using mkinitramfs-kpkg to build the ramdisk. Not updating initrd symbolic links since we are being updated/reinstalled (2.6.22-6 was configured last, according to dpkg) Not updating image symbolic links since we are being updated/reinstalled (2.6.22-6 was configured last, according to dpkg) It seems that in the case of the installation of a kernel with the same number, dpkg doesn't verify that initrd symbolic links really exists just because it consider that they should be correct in the case of an update. But if for some reason those links were broken they are not recreated and lilo isn't updated -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Bug#465482: dh-make: template package synopses vs DevRef 6.2.2
Craig Small wrote: Justin B Rye wrote: Description: Documentation for #PACKAGE# Description: Source for the #PACKAGE# driver. This use of capitalisation and punctuation is contrary to the recommendations in the Debian Developer's Reference. In fact on debian-l10n-english we frequently suggest a format more like the following for multi-binary packages: Description: suite synopsis - utilities Description: suite synopsis - documentation Description: suite synopsis - source but while that format's widely used it's not enshrined in policy. So... It should be Description: #PACKAGE# - documentation Description: #PACKAGE# - source ? I'm not quite sure what you want it to be. The Documentation for... and Source for... versions are buggy, so I attached a patch with the minimum fix necessary to make them compliant with DevRef 6.2.2's recommendations. Changing them to the suite synopsis - documentation format might please me personally, but that would only be a wishlist-level bug, and it's trickier than just making it #PACKAGE# - documentation because the bare package-name more or less never makes an adequate suite synopsis. The nearest you get is cases like the Courier MTA suite, with short descriptions like: courier-base: Courier mail server - base system courier-doc: Courier mail server - additional documentation courier-imap: Courier mail server - IMAP server (These are capitalised because Courier here is the name of the upstream software project rather than of a .deb or executable.) Besides, not all multiple binary source packages suit this style. If it's multiple only to the extent of having a #PACKAGE# and a #PACKAGE#-doc, the latter may be better of labelled as documentation for #PACKAGE#. In an ideal world I'd have a pointer to a generally agreed set of clear, detailed and robust recommendations, and the section of the New Maintainer's Guide that points at dh-make would also point at that; but the best we've got is DevRef 6.2.2. -- JBR Ankh kak! Bug#456822: aptitude incorecctly reports that packages are not a Debian package
Hi Daniel, sorry for the late reply. Daniel Burrows wrote: Losing Origin information by changing your sources.list is a bit of a corner case. I suppose I could heuristically check all the packages to see if any Debian packages existed in the cache, or (better) if any packages at all had an Origin tag. However, note that this wouldn't help if you had any package at all with Origin: Debian in your cache prior to changing sources.list. Okay, so I think we both agree that the problem is a corner case. Then probably the real problem to solve is how the corner case is handled. Another option would be to just change the message to say that either it's not a Debian package or you need to run update. But I believe this would just confuse people into thinking they needed to run update when in fact this is almost never going to help. I agree that this wouldn't be so optimal. However there must be a possibility to detect this case where sources.list has been changed, or not? Couldn't you print two different messages depending on weither this is the case or not? Bug#465558: libpam-encfs does not always unmount on logout
Package: libpam-encfs Version: 0.1.4.1-2 Severity: normal Tags: patch --- Please enter the report below this line. --- I use libpam-encfs with a special configuration file for (currently) only one user that mounts a subdirectory of the home-dir for security-specific files. Config file /etc/security/pam_encfs.conf contains the line hmarkert/home/hmarkert/.sync/home/hmarkert/sync -v - where sync is the encrypted directory. I disabled the auto-unmont, because obviously the active session will not always keep files open and hence unmounts the directory every few minutes, which is very annoying. So I configured session requiredpam_encfs.so in /etc/pam.d/common-session. However, unmounting on session end does not relieably work. I looked into the source code of pam_encfs.c and did not find anything looking relevant. However, for me it works if I add a wait()-call in the parent after the fork that executes fusermount -u on the home directory. I attached a diff with the changes. I would further suggest to add a session counter in pam_encfs.c if there is any possibility to have something like static variables in a pam-plugin (I am not experienced with pam). This would avoid unmounting of the file system if on another console another session of the same user is running. If it weren't for users I'd suggest removal :-) Over the time megahal has acquired a number of extension I seldom, if ever, used. It would be best if megahal was team-maintained by people who actually care about a Tcl, Python, and Perl module (and are willing to cope with the C codebase too). I've more or less given up. Markovian models are not hard to code properly, and I've just done that for a spam filter I consider including in debian. Bug#465569: cyrus-sasl2: Use /etc/sasl2 as primary configuration directory
Package: cyrus-sasl2 Severity: wishlist After discussion on the Cyrus SASL Team mailing list (archived thread starts at [0]), some concensus was reached for using /etc/sasl2 as the primary configuration directory. Specifically, the following was proposed [1]: * Use --with-configdir=/etc/sasl2:/etc/sasl:/usr/lib/sasl2 in the build. * Promote /etc/sasl2 as the proper default. * Keep /etc/sasl for backwards compatibility with older Debian systems, but do not mention it in the documentation. * Keep /usr/lib/sasl2 for compatibility with upstream's wishes, but do not mention it in the documentation. * Applications like Postfix, OpenLDAP, Cyrus IMAPd can continue to use their own config locations if they wish; how this works should be explained in the Debian Cyrus SASL documentation. * Write the documentation for this. This bug tracks the progress of all the above points. Note that do not mention ... in the documentation means that there shall be no confusion in the documentation about what the recommended practise is. It doesn't mean that we want to create undocumented features. It's simply a matter of clarity. The rest can be documented as facts, with proper notice on our intentions. Note that we have not yet discussed this with other distributions, and it would be wise to do so before implementing the above. Bug#409008: mount --move screws up mtab
Package: mount Version: 2.12r-19etch1 Also verified for 2.12r-19etch1. By repeating such a --move operations a few times, /etc/mtab grows by even more bind-mounts: /drive /mnt none rw 0 0 /mnt /drive none rw 0 0 /drive /mnt none rw 0 0 /mnt /drive none rw 0 0 /proc/mounts correctly notices the move and promptly gives only a single line with the correct device. I believe that /etc/mtab should behave more like /proc/mounts. This bug is certainly annoying, as a moved subtree is no longer correctly printed from e.g. df: move a subtree, df will stick to the old mountpoint. Zack, Which xserver-xorg-video-ati driver are you using? Can you try the one in experimental? Can you look at /var/log/aptitude or /var/log/dpkg.log to find out which driver you had before upgrading? Bug#465572: apt: http acquire method misbehaves on 404 from non-keepalive Server
Package: apt Version: 0.6.46.4-0.1 Severity: important Tags: patch Using apt-proxy, apt-get update sometimes failed mysteriously to fetch files known to exist. From the outside, this looks as follows: APT tries to fetch a non-existent file (in our case, a DiffIndex). You see a HTTP GET on the wire and a 404 response. APT records the failure as Ign. APT tries to fetch an existent URL. You don't see anything on the wire. APT accuses the HTTP server of having closed the connection and records failure on the existent URL. APT continues normally with the next URL. From the inside, the HTTP acquire method goes into great lengths to shoot itself in the foot (or, more precisely, several feet) as follows: ServerState::RunHeaders() sets Persistent = false ServerState::HeaderLine() gets a Transfer-Encoding: chunked header. It deduces from this, that a Body must be present, which in fact is correct, only it might not to be the entirely right way to deduce this. It also receives a Connection: close header. HttpMethod::DealWithHeaders() recognizes the 404 and returns 4. HttpMethod::Loop() calls Fail(). HttpMethod::Loop() then continues to skip the Body. This is superflous because the connection is known to be closed afterwards. ServerState::RunData() calls HttpMethod::Go(). HttpMethod::Go() calls CircleBuf::Read(). CircleBuf::Read() calls read() until this returns 0. (because the server closed the connection). HttpMethod::Go() then calls HttpMethod::ServerDie(). HttpMethod::ServerDie() calls _error and registers a closed connection. It also closes the connection via ServerState::Close(). HttpMethod::Loop() closes the connection again because Server-Persistent has been cleared (it doesn't check for the fd to be -1). This is harmless. HttpMethod::Loop() then tries to re-open the connection via ServerState::Open(). ServerState::Open() calls Connect() (from methods/connect.cc). Connect() notices a PendingError() and returns false. The problem may be viewed as Fail() being called too early. One could also avoid skipping the Body if the connection is already known to be closed thereafter. More generally, I have the impression that HttpMethod::Go() should not call ServerDie() if Read() returns false if the connection may correctly be closed by the server. I haven't looked into this. The attached patch fixes our problem by moving the call to Fail() further down. -- Package-specific info: -- (no /etc/apt/preferences present) -- -- (/etc/apt/sources.list present, but not submitted) -- -- System Information: Debian Release: 4.0 APT prefers stable APT policy: (500, 'stable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.6.24.wap Locale: [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED] (charmap=ISO-8859-15) Versions of packages apt depends on: ii debian-archive-keyring 2007.07.31~etch1 GnuPG archive keys of the Debian a ii libc6 2.3.6.ds1-13etch4 GNU C Library: Shared libraries ii libgcc11:4.1.1-21GCC support library ii libstdc++6 4.1.1-21 The GNU Standard C++ Library v3 apt recommends no packages. -- no debconf information --- methods/http.cc.orig2006-12-04 15:37:36.0 +0100 +++ methods/http.cc 2008-02-12 17:37:52.0 +0100 @@ -1200,13 +1200,13 @@ // We need to flush the data, the header is like a 404 w/ error text case 4: { - Fail(); - // Send to content to dev/null File = new FileFd(/dev/null,FileFd::WriteExists); Server-RunData(); delete File; File = 0; + + Fail(); break; }

Bug#397939: Consensus about what a proper clean target is?
On Tue, Feb 12, 2008 at 12:16:17AM +0100, Bas Wijnen wrote: At this moment however, I don't think there is consensus yet that it is always better to remove all generated files, including autotools-generated stuff, in the clean target. Well, I haven't seen many people claiming that it is really bad to do this so far, so I'll try to make sure that we can record this as consensus. Please, if anyone thinks that it should be allowed for the clean target to keep some generated files, speak up. And please argue why you think so, so we can flame^Wtalk about it. :-) I'll have one argument myself first: If a generated file is needed by the build, and it cannot be regenerated for some reason, for example as a workaround for a bug (such as #441126; read only the second e-mail) or to bootstrap a compiler build, then this is acceptable. However, this file may not be overwritten during the build. If overwriting is desired, it should be copied, the copy should be overwritten, and the copy must be removed by the clean target. In other words, it must be used as a source file by the build. This mail will automatically go to -policy. I've added the autotools-dev PTS address. Followups probably won't do that, since they don't have the X-PTS-Approved header. So if you're not reading this on -policy, but have an opinion, please follow the discussion there (or through the BTS).
