Bug#501070: xserver-xorg-input-wacom: Setting 'core key' actions on pad buttons crashes X server when they are pressed.
Hi, There seem to be quite a number of known bad interactions with the xorg 1.4 input layer at present. It changed considerably from 1.3 and we're being bitten from two angles, the linuxwacom support for that is still relatively immature, and there are bugs in the xorg input layer itself which I'm led to believe will only be fixed in 1.5+ versions. There is a new linuxwacom release which contains some fixes for reported problems, but gauging from the upstream reports, it's still crashing X (in some cases in keyboard handler related ways) for a number of people. So the short and unfortunate answer, is that this seems doomed to suck for Lenny :( People who really need their tablet(s) for professional use are best advised to stick to xorg 1.3 (in stable), though if you have a newer tablet, introduced since then, you will also need a backport of the newer linuxwacom drivers to support it. The current nasty bugs should be limited to just the xorg 1.4 code branches, so such a backport should work ok (and this did work nicely and reliably prior to xorg 1.4). I'm aiming to get some packages into experimental soon for testing with xorg 1.5, but I don't anticipate this will instantly fix all of the problems either (and may well introduce some new ones). People who have the time, skill, and inclination to hack on this are more than welcome to make their problems and patches known on the linuxwacom-{discuss,devel} list(s). The more people we get contributing there, the better our chances of having this solid again by the time Squeeze freezes, and there are friendly and helpful folk who can point out the known workarounds. Sorry, there was just more work in this transition than there were people to do it, so it's about as badly 'out of phase' for release with Lenny this time as things should ever get ... To fix on my etch box I changed my /etc/default/bind9 to match lenny: OPTIONS=-u bind Thus enabling named to read rndc.key correctly, although I suspect that in my case and others the issue was a woody/sarge box (or earlier) upgraded to etch that may of caused some issues. Bug#500781: ubuntu/debian repos
Martin Geisler wrote: Ken Blake [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: I've been meaning to ask about why the Ubuntu hardy repo was so out of date. It currently has v0.9.5. I googled Vincent and found this page: http://www-id.imag.fr/Laboratoire/Membres/Danjean_Vincent/deb.html#mercurial which shows the package name to be mercurial_1.0-7~bpo40+1_i386.deb which I assume means it is version 1.0. Correct, but the bpo part also tells you that this is a package for backports.org -- a place where people upload newer versions of packages for the stable Debian releases. My web page is not always uptodate... ;-) But when I look at the Debian site: http://packages.debian.org/etch/mercurial it lists mercurial (0.9.1-1+etch1) which implies an even older version than Ubuntu. The current stable Debian release is etch, and this was released in April 2007. The next stable release (the testing distribution called lenny) will contain 1.0.1: Unless big security bugs, Debian packages of the stable release are never updated. Currently, the stable release is etch. The next one, lenny, is in preparation. It will have mercurial 1.0.1 because 1.0.2 has been released after the freeze (ie near a release, packages cannot be updated in Debian unless security bug. And only patch for this bug can be backported) Hint: if anyone can point me to a specific changeset to fix the second security bug fixed in 1.0.2 (Mercurial before 1.0.2 does not enforce the allowpull permission), I will backport it to 1.0.1 in the next Debian release (see http://bugs.debian.org/500781 ) http://packages.debian.org/search?keywords=mercurial So my interpretation of this is Ubuntu and Debian are not in sync and Vincent has done an upgrade but it hasn't been accepted yet? I don't really know how these things work. Debian has an unstable distribution where new stuff is uploaded. After 14 days (normally) a package can move to the testing distribution provided that no new bugs were reported. Once in a while the testing distribution is released -- it is then called stable. Packages in stable receive security updates only, even if projects release newer versions. It is true but near a Debian release, package cannot not be updated in 14 days anymore. So, for Debian : - etch has an very old mercurial version (0.9.1) and will always keep it - lenny (the next stable release) has version 1.0.1 (+ patch(es?) for security bugs) - backport.org (package from lenny rebuilt for etch) has also 1.0.1 When lenny will be released (in a few weeks ?) - etch will not change (0.9.1) - lenny will have 1.0.1 (+ patch(es?) for security bugs) - squeeze (the one after lenny) will have 1.0.2 and any new mercurial version before squeeze release - backport.org will also have 1.0.2 for lenny (and etch if I have enough time) I do not know how/when Ubuntu takes Debian packages to include them in Ubuntu. The only thing with that is that hgweb itself is not shipped within the Debian package but I guess a lot of people are using the source package to extract the cgi script anyway. hgweb is not setup by default (because it needs manual editions) But hgweb.cgi, hgwebdir.cgi, and hgwebdir.fcgi are installed in /usr/share/doc/mercurial/examples/ Regards, Vincent Cheers Nico ___ Python-apps-team mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://lists.alioth.debian.org/mailman/listinfo/python-apps-team -- Vincent Danjean GPG key ID 0x9D025E87 [EMAIL PROTECTED] GPG key fingerprint: FC95 08A6 854D DB48 4B9A 8A94 0BF7 7867 9D02 5E87 Unofficial pacakges: http://www-id.imag.fr/~danjean/deb.html#package APT repo: deb http://perso.debian.org/~vdanjean/debian unstable main -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#501111: iceweasel: Annoying behaviour about non-writable downloaded files
Package: iceweasel Version: 3.0.1 Severity: normal It is highly annoying that Iceweasel systematically saves temporary files with r rights. Not only is it annoying but also buggy, as several helper applications need to be able to edit the downloaded file. For instance, downloading a .pls (some RealAudio formatt) sound file with totem, iceweasel froze on the open with dialog, because of this. It would be highly recommandable to have at least an option accessible via about:config to toggle a swith concerning such a behaviour. Bug#499650: [Pkg-utopia-maintainers] Bug#499650: Bug#499650: dbus: wrong dependencies on libice6, libsm6 and libx11-6
Michael Biebl wrote: Yeah, I misunderstood you in your first email. It is not about the dependency on libx11-6, but the additional/new dependency on libsm6 and libice6. The problem seem to be very simple: configure.in:915-935 The AC_PATH_XTRA macro picks up additional X11 libs if installed and adds them to $X_EXTRA_LIBS. If you install in a clean chroot, $X_EXTRA_LIBS will be empty. If you have additional X11 dev packages installed, like libice-dev or libsm-dev, as Moritz seems to have, then you get this extra X11 libs dependencies. So I can only assume that Moritz didn't build the package in a clean, minimal chroot. Indeed, it was my regular stable-security chroot. I guess we can either add build conflicts against all non-required X11 dev packages (I'm not sure if this is viable) or patch out X_EXTRA_LIBS from configure.in. I suppose patching configure.in would be best. Cheers, Moritz -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Sure, but depending on the bug, you might be on your own. This is such a case :) The problem is not the octave3.0 package in experimental, but the different octave-forge packages in unstable. They need a recompile. This however would mean that they wouldn't work with the current octave3.0 package in unstable, so we would need a new octave3.0 package in unstable as well. It seems this is due to the network not being up at the time, it only comes up some seconds later. Why is this? On a normal Debian system, the network is brought up in runlevel S (/etc/rcS.d/S40networking), whereas network servers such as samba aren't started until runlevel 2 (/etc/rc2.d/S20samba). Why is this not the case on your system? The system is a standard Debian testing with minimal work to get Backuppc and Samba running, no manual changes to networking stuff. /etc/rcS.d/S40networking is there and looks fine, same for /etc/network/interfaces: # This file describes the network interfaces available on your system # and how to activate them. Bug#501096: aptitude: Questionable translation
Quoting Mauro Lizaur ([EMAIL PROTECTED]): He's right, but I wouldn't call 'vulgar spelling and careless pronunciation' to the translation of 'replaces'. I mean, September in spanish could be 'Septiembre' or 'Setiembre', and both are perfectly fine. So, the correct spelling is still Reemplazar, right? Bug#501117: timer-applet: old preset files from stable cause crashes
Package: timer-applet Severity: serious Version: 2.0.1-3 [0] looks like a bug that could be found when updating from etch to lenny. The auto-completion works, but the function is not recognised : Yepp, ABI change in our Octave package, meaning you can't load .oct files compiled with an earlier version of Octave. There's a reason it's in experimental. Thomas Okay. Fine for me. Just to understand : non-working packages in experimental don't deserve bug reports ? Sure, but depending on the bug, you might be on your own. This is such a case :) The problem is not the octave3.0 package in experimental, but the different octave-forge packages in unstable. They need a recompile. This however would mean that they wouldn't work with the current octave3.0 package in unstable, so we would need a new octave3.0 package in unstable as well. Did I mention that we are in a freeze? :) So, if you want me to upload all these packages, you will need to grant me asylum afterwards - I fear the release team would come after me. Thomas Well... if this ABI change renders packages incompatible between them (i.e. octave-image in unstable and octave3.0 in experimental), my vision of the packages system is that they should conflict between them. I don't know how, that's why I report bugs and don't maintain packages (yet) ;) Anyway, best regards and thanks for your time ! Didier -- Didier Raboud, proud Debian user. Bug#499569: gnupg2: diff for NMU version 2.0.9-3.1
tags 499569 + patch pending thanks Hi gnupg2-maintainers, Here is the NMU for gnupg2 (versioned as 2.0.9-3.1). pth seems to mess with the sigprocmask on i386 at least. As such deinitializing pth (with pth_kill) before execv seems like a good idea. Because that does not quite do the trick, I also manually save and restore the sigprogmask. Regarding the problem of reproducing, I should add to Mirco's comments that it apparently only occurs when running in a i386 kernel, not in an i386 chroot on and amd64 system. Bug#501121: jd: package description inadequate
Package: jd Severity: wishlist The package description hardly describes its features and functionalities, which I would like to be more detailed and specific about these things. A rough draft of mine based on Mr. maintainer's original description is as follows, though I have the impression that this one is too long and needs some revisions. * BEGINNING * JD is a simple and easy-to-use browser for 2ch-style bulletin board systems (or Internet forums), which ensures you comfortable 2ch browsing experience with its various functionalities such as logging in, message viewing/posting, image viewing, mouse gestures, ignore lists, play-by-play mode, and so on, while significantly reducing server workloads by bypassing CGI programs and directly retrieving thread data files to your local hard drives. 2ch-style BBSes have their origins in 2channel, which is the most popular Internet forum in Japan, and are often available only in the Japanese language. Some of these BBSes are listed below. - 2channel (http://www.2ch.net) - Shitaraba (http://rentalbbs.livedoor.com/jbbs/) - Machi-BBS (http://www.machi.to/) * END * -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. I have just updated the machine to current Lenny and it still fails in the very same way as it used to. I think I didn't mention that a normal kill doesn't kill the server and you need a kill -9 to kill it and it doesn't restore the text mode after that, the same totted X screen remains and keyboard doesn't seem to be working at that time. I can then start another X server (remotely as local keyboard and screen was broken) and same thing will happen again. Hope this helps. You are experiencing fallout from this last change. The package dependencies could be updated so that the tools upgrade more smoothly. However, this issue will only affect users of testing, such as yourself, and thus this is not a critical issue for the release. OK, so if I understand you correctly - rather than accepting the suggestion to upgrade libdb-dev which claims to be for 4.7.25.2 and would not match either libdb4.6 (4.6.21-8) [which is what is currently installed] or libdb4.6 (4.6.21-11) [which is what seems to the next package to migrate to testing] - I should simply wait until libdb4.7 (4.7.25-4) migrates to testing Correct? If so please feel free to close the report (actually could I close it myself?) and I hope this report is helpful for others who were confused like me. Thanks again! Bug#501133: please add patch to allow keeping fds open
Package: vte Version: 1:0.16.14-3 Severity: important X-Debbugs-CC: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hi Loic, Sebastian, Gnome Maintainers, as witnessed by #493353, the GTK frontend to gdebi is completely broken because it relies on a patch to vtk that provides a way to keep dpkg's status-fd open. The patch looks fairly sane to me. In terms of the lenny release, we seem to have three options 1) patch vtk as attached, 2) remove gdebi-gtk (or gdebi), 3) work around the problem (e.g. open a named pipe and invoke a dpkg wrapper that proxies that to the dpkg status-fd). At this point, the easiest path seems to be 1), with the main argument against it being that upstream 0.17 does not seem to have incorporated the patch. Opinions? I'd be happy to actually do the upload, but I would prefer an explicit OK for it, either here or on IRC. Bug#501132: some notes on the new package
I almost forgot, but there are two things I'm not fully sure about. 1. Lintian warned about an outdated standards-version. I've updated it to the current policy's number, but couldn't find a list of policy changes. Should this be reverted? 2. Shared library version. The libraries still have a .0.0.0 suffix, but I'm not sure if it should be bumped. The portmidi.h headers haven't changed (but for some comments, changing function return type from int to enum), except one thing: some defines for Pm_SetFilter were changed since 2004. I doubt that anyone uses this functionality, since a google search showed only portmidi sources, but I'd say that recompilation would be needed in case it were used. I'm not sure how to proceed. Really bump the major version and make it libportmidi1? -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I tried the same 4 methods and copied the pictures on the 500gb data partition and there where no failures or md5sum differences. Then I copied the pictures in an ssh shell with an normal cp-command from the local-partition to the raid5-partition. The md5sum values where the same, so this worked well. So in my opinion the problem has to do with the crypted raid5. I tried to reproduce this failures with other files but i had this problem only with RAW (*.cr2 Canon) picture files. I tried to repair my system with these 3 Methods: 1. fsck.ext3 -y /dev/mapper/md0_crypt 2. fsck.ext3 -c -p /dev/mapper/md0_crypt 3. server rebooted a few times I couldn't find out any failure messages in the log-files or at the booting. After many hours I found this out: With Kernel 2.6.24-etchnhalf.1-686, Kernel 2.6.24-etchnhalf.1-486 and Kernel 2.6.26-bpo.1-486 I could reproduce my Image-copy-problem. As I booted the older Kernel 2.6.18-6-486 I where able to copy the pictures with any of the methods above and the md5sum values where OK. Because of this I think its an Kernel problem. I absolutly don't know what additional information I should post with this E-Mail, please write me what I should add or where I should post the extra-information. Sorry if I addressed this E-Mail wrong, I don't know where to go with this problem/bug. With bug-buddy I weren't able to make a Bug-Report. Bug#501131: geeqie: overwrites user-defined configuration
Hi Dne Sat, 04 Oct 2008 17:33:12 +0400 Stanislav Maslovski [EMAIL PROTECTED] napsal(a): I removed manually the files (and subdirs) under my ~./thumbnals/ directory. Then when I started geeqie after that I noticed that my customized keyboard accelerators ceased to operate. I looked into ~./geeqie/ and found that the configuration files got overwritten. This should not happen as thumbnails and accels are not related in any way. Can you please test whether alpha2 in unstable behaves same? -- Michal Čihař | http://cihar.com | http://blog.cihar.com signature.asc Description: PGP signature

Reproduced it with alpha2 by simultaneous writing to disk and viewing new files in geeqie (so that it creates new thumbnails and also eats up space). -- Stanislav -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#501135: README.Debian: The information about Xaw3d and Gnome are no longer valid
Package: vice Version: 1.22-3 Severity: minor Hello, README.Debian contains: Despite the availability of a Gnome interface, this package is still compiled for use with Xaw3d, partly to avoid the nest of dependencies that goes along with Gnome, and partly because fullscreen mode is not available with the Gnome interface. which should be removed since it's no longer valid.
