Bug#501070: xserver-xorg-input-wacom: Setting 'core key' actions on pad buttons crashes X server when they are pressed.

2008-10-04 Thread Ron

Hi,

There seem to be quite a number of known bad interactions with the
xorg 1.4 input layer at present. It changed considerably from 1.3
and we're being bitten from two angles, the linuxwacom support for
that is still relatively immature, and there are bugs in the xorg
input layer itself which I'm led to believe will only be fixed in
1.5+ versions.

There is a new linuxwacom release which contains some fixes for
reported problems, but gauging from the upstream reports, it's
still crashing X (in some cases in keyboard handler related ways)
for a number of people.

So the short and unfortunate answer, is that this seems doomed to
suck for Lenny :( People who really need their tablet(s) for
professional use are best advised to stick to xorg 1.3 (in stable),
though if you have a newer tablet, introduced since then, you will
also need a backport of the newer linuxwacom drivers to support it.
The current nasty bugs should be limited to just the xorg 1.4 code
branches, so such a backport should work ok (and this did work
nicely and reliably prior to xorg 1.4).

I'm aiming to get some packages into experimental soon for testing
with xorg 1.5, but I don't anticipate this will instantly fix all
of the problems either (and may well introduce some new ones).
People who have the time, skill, and inclination to hack on this
are more than welcome to make their problems and patches known on
the linuxwacom-{discuss,devel} list(s). The more people we get
contributing there, the better our chances of having this solid
again by the time Squeeze freezes, and there are friendly and
helpful folk who can point out the known workarounds.

Sorry, there was just more work in this transition than there
were people to do it, so it's about as badly 'out of phase' for
release with Lenny this time as things should ever get ...

 Ron

 Hi!
Aptitude localized to Spanish displays the Replaces: header as
Remplazar: which a vulgar spelling and careless pronunciation of
 Reemplazar:.

Let's ask the Debian l10n Spanish team. Folks:

A dictionary lawyer would argue that the RAE Dictionary has an entry
for remplazar but that doesn't make it the appropiate spelling for the
 Debian operating system.
It is also a matter of consistency: there are 2 occurences of
reemplazar in the po/es.po file, and 3 of remplazar, but before you
or the translators decide to uniform spelling by turning the 2
reemplazar into remplazar, let me note that a google fight between
reemplazar and remplazar goes 395/25 in favour of
 reemplazar.

 This patch fixes the issue:

Bug#169577: [Bug#169577] bind9: Unable to stop bind with rndc: connect failed

2008-10-04 Thread Mark Purcell
fixed 169577 1:9.5.0.dfsg.P2-1
thanks

LaMont,

I find it amazing that this bug is still open (and a number of merges) it was
still effecting my etch box, however I am happy to report that this issue
appears to be resolved for lenny ;-) hence the fixed tag above.

To fix on my etch box I changed my /etc/default/bind9 to match lenny:
OPTIONS=-u bind

Thus enabling named to read rndc.key correctly, although I suspect that in my
case and others the issue was a woody/sarge box (or earlier) upgraded to etch
that may of caused some issues.

Also the posinst script appears to be contributing (#388537)

Mark

I won't make another proofread of the translation in this time frame,

it is fine if this goes into Lenny (if the recoding problems mentioned

Squeeze then, to catch the inevitable typos.

Bingo! I have Intel GM965/GL960 graphics card and I get the exact same

I am using xserver-xorg-core 1.4.2 and libgl1-mesa-dri 7.0.3. The
versions that seem to fix this problem -- xserver 1.5.0 and
libgl1-mesa-dri 7.1 are both available in debian/experimental, though
I haven't tried them yet.

It would be really awesome if you could try those and see if it fixes
your problem. In that case we could recommend to people to use that
version when they report this problem -- many people suffer from this bug.

Also, was some explorer function removed from mayavi2 in the new
version?
Not sure. Envisage plugins have changed so the explorer may not be
exposed in the shell, however, I am not sure where the explorer is in
the 3.x code base or if it works at all. That was a Pyface/traits
package that I did not write... :(

Okay, thanks. Should I ask on enthought-dev?

Yes, don't tag the message to be mayavi specific if not it could fall
through the cracks. Thanks!

When downloading firmware files directly form ralink website

Not sure if this is also true for firmware from other vendors

The license file should also added to the zip-files available from

2008-10-04 Thread Ron

Hi Martin,

Could you please take another look at this translation? It seems that
you originally made it against an older template. When applied to the
current source some of them come out fuzzy again (and somehow I missed
that too until it was pointed out).

Thanks!

Bug#500781: ubuntu/debian repos

2008-10-04 Thread Vincent Danjean
Martin Geisler wrote:
 Ken Blake [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:

I've been meaning to ask about why the Ubuntu hardy repo was so out
of date. It currently has v0.9.5. I googled Vincent and found this
 page:
 http://www-id.imag.fr/Laboratoire/Membres/Danjean_Vincent/deb.html#mercurial
which shows the package name to be mercurial_1.0-7~bpo40+1_i386.deb
which I assume means it is version 1.0.

Correct, but the bpo part also tells you that this is a package for
backports.org -- a place where people upload newer versions of
packages for the stable Debian releases.

My web page is not always uptodate... ;-)

But when I look at the Debian site:
 http://packages.debian.org/etch/mercurial it lists mercurial
(0.9.1-1+etch1) which implies an even older version than Ubuntu.

The current stable Debian release is etch, and this was released in
April 2007. The next stable release (the testing distribution called
 lenny) will contain 1.0.1:

Unless big security bugs, Debian packages of the stable release are never
updated. Currently, the stable release is etch. The next one, lenny, is in
preparation. It will have mercurial 1.0.1 because 1.0.2 has been released
after the freeze (ie near a release, packages cannot be updated in Debian
unless security bug. And only patch for this bug can be backported)

Hint: if anyone can point me to a specific changeset to fix the second
security bug fixed in 1.0.2 (Mercurial before 1.0.2 does not enforce the
allowpull permission), I will backport it to 1.0.1 in the next Debian
release (see http://bugs.debian.org/500781 )

   http://packages.debian.org/search?keywords=mercurial

So my interpretation of this is Ubuntu and Debian are not in sync
and Vincent has done an upgrade but it hasn't been accepted yet? I
don't really know how these things work.

Debian has an unstable distribution where new stuff is uploaded. After
14 days (normally) a package can move to the testing distribution
provided that no new bugs were reported. Once in a while the testing
distribution is released -- it is then called stable. Packages in
stable receive security updates only, even if projects release newer
 versions.

It is true but near a Debian release, package cannot not be updated in 14 days
anymore.
So, for Debian :
- etch has an very old mercurial version (0.9.1) and will always keep it
- lenny (the next stable release) has version 1.0.1 (+ patch(es?) for security
bugs)
- backport.org (package from lenny rebuilt for etch) has also 1.0.1
When lenny will be released (in a few weeks ?)
- etch will not change (0.9.1)
- lenny will have 1.0.1 (+ patch(es?) for security bugs)
- squeeze (the one after lenny) will have 1.0.2 and any new mercurial version
  before squeeze release
- backport.org will also have 1.0.2 for lenny (and etch if I have enough time)

I do not know how/when Ubuntu takes Debian packages to include them in Ubuntu.
(I do not follow Ubuntu development)

  Regards,
Vincent

I am not sure about the severity of this issue, could you please investigate
 it?

I'd say grave would be appropriate as the repository could
contain sensitive information that should not be pulled. The
only thing with that is that hgweb itself is not shipped
within the Debian package but I guess a lot of people are
using the source package to extract the cgi script anyway.

hgweb is not setup by default (because it needs manual editions)
But hgweb.cgi, hgwebdir.cgi, and hgwebdir.fcgi are installed in
/usr/share/doc/mercurial/examples/

Bug#501109: CVE-2008-3964: off-by-one error in pngtest.c

2008-10-04 Thread Steffen Joeris
Package: libpng
Severity: important
Tags: security, patch

Hi,
the following CVE (Common Vulnerabilities Exposures) id was
published for libpng.

CVE-2008-3964[0]:
| Multiple off-by-one errors in libpng before 1.2.32beta01, and 1.4
| before 1.4.0beta34, allow context-dependent attackers to cause a
| denial of service (crash) or have unspecified other impact via a PNG
| image with crafted zTXt chunks, related to (1) the png_push_read_zTXt

As discussed via private email before, the patch is:

-#define PNG_tIME_STRING_LENGTH 30
+#define PNG_tIME_STRING_LENGTH 29

Please ask for a freeze exception for lenny.

If you fix the vulnerability please also make sure to include the
CVE id in your changelog entry.

Cheers

Bug#501111: iceweasel: Annoying behaviour about non-writable downloaded files

2008-10-04 Thread Jean-Baka Domelevo-Entfellner
Package: iceweasel
Version: 3.0.1
Severity: normal

It is highly annoying that Iceweasel systematically saves temporary
files with r rights. Not only is it annoying but also buggy,
as several helper applications need to be able to edit the downloaded
file. For instance, downloading a .pls (some RealAudio formatt) sound
file with totem, iceweasel froze on the open with dialog, because of
this.
It would be highly recommandable to have at least an option accessible
via about:config to toggle a swith concerning such a behaviour.
Thx

Bug#499650: [Pkg-utopia-maintainers] Bug#499650: Bug#499650: dbus: wrong dependencies on libice6, libsm6 and libx11-6

Yeah, I misunderstood you in your first email. It is not about the
dependency on libx11-6, but the additional/new dependency on libsm6 and
 libice6.

The problem seem to be very simple:
 configure.in:915-935

The AC_PATH_XTRA macro picks up additional X11 libs if installed and
 adds them to $X_EXTRA_LIBS.

If you install in a clean chroot, $X_EXTRA_LIBS will be empty.

If you have additional X11 dev packages installed, like libice-dev or
libsm-dev, as Moritz seems to have, then you get this extra X11 libs
 dependencies.
So I can only assume that Moritz didn't build the package in a clean,
 minimal chroot.

Indeed, it was my regular stable-security chroot.

I guess we can either add build conflicts against all non-required X11
dev packages (I'm not sure if this is viable)
or patch out X_EXTRA_LIBS from configure.in.

I suppose patching configure.in would be best.

Cheers,
Moritz

 [35]/home/robert MOZILLA_FIVE_HOME=/usr/lib/icedove iceape www.debian.org
 Memory fault (core dumped)

This bug makes it impossible to launch iceape from icedove.
The previous version (1.1.11) of iceape works OK.

icedove should stop setting MOZILLA_FIVE_HOME, like all others mozilla
based software in Debian.

There is also no particular reason why this would work better with
1.1.11, except miraculous library ABI compatibility.

Bug#484789: 2007-14 as Year-Month: what's the status of this bug?

2008-10-04 Thread Francesco Poli
Hi!

Could you please tell me what's the status of this bug?
It seems to have been marked as pending for quite some time now, but I
cannot see [1] any new debbugs upload since 2003...

Is a fixed version going to be uploaded (and deployed for the Debian
BTS) soon?

Thank you very much for your time!

   Hi,

I tried Octave from Debian experimental: I installed octave3.0, -headers
   and -image.

I then tried to use pngread (e.g.) from octave-image. The auto-completion
works, but the function is not recognised :

Yepp, ABI change in our Octave package, meaning you can't load .oct
files compiled with an earlier version of Octave. There's a reason it's
  in experimental.

  Thomas

 Okay. Fine for me.

Just to understand : non-working packages in experimental don't deserve bug
 reports ?

Sure, but depending on the bug, you might be on your own. This is such a
case :)

The problem is not the octave3.0 package in experimental, but the
different octave-forge packages in unstable. They need a recompile. This
however would mean that they wouldn't work with the current octave3.0
package in unstable, so we would need a new octave3.0 package in
unstable as well.

Did I mention that we are in a freeze? :)

So, if you want me to upload all these packages, you will need to grant
me asylum afterwards - I fear the release team would come after me.

Bug#501075: [Pkg-samba-maint] Bug#501075: samba: Daemons don't start on boot because network is not yet up

smbd and nmbd failed to start up at boot, I started them manually from swat.
It seems this is due to the network not being up at the time,
it only comes up some seconds later.

Why is this? On a normal Debian system, the network is brought up in
runlevel S (/etc/rcS.d/S40networking), whereas network servers such as samba
aren't started until runlevel 2 (/etc/rc2.d/S20samba). Why is this not the
 case on your system?

The system is a standard Debian testing with minimal work to get Backuppc
and Samba running, no manual changes to networking stuff.
/etc/rcS.d/S40networking is there and looks fine,
same for /etc/network/interfaces:

# This file describes the network interfaces available on your system
# and how to activate them. For more information, see interfaces(5).

# The loopback network interface
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

# The primary network interface
allow-hotplug eth0
iface eth0 inet dhcp

Even if you were letting NetworkManager handle all of your network
interfaces, the loopback interface should still be brought up by
/etc/rcS.d/S40networking, AFAIK. and that's sufficient to let smbd start,

I checked, it starts up with loopback only (after ifdown eth0).

unless you have made some atypical changes to the 'interfaces' line in your
 smb.conf.

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ grep interfaces /etc/samba/smb.conf
interfaces = 127.0.0.1/8, 10.158.2.0/24
bind interfaces only = Yes

This seems to be a spurious problem, I just did three reboots,
the first two went well, it happened again on the third one.

Bug#501096: aptitude: Questionable translation

2008-10-04 Thread Christian Perrier
Quoting Mauro Lizaur ([EMAIL PROTECTED]):

He's right, but I wouldn't call 'vulgar spelling and careless pronunciation'
 to the translation of 'replaces'.
I mean, September in spanish could be 'Septiembre' or 'Setiembre', and both
 are perfectly fine.

So, the correct spelling is still Reemplazar, right?

And, therefore the patch is OK?

Bug#501117: timer-applet: old preset files from stable cause crashes

2008-10-04 Thread Philipp Kern
Package: timer-applet
Severity: serious
Version: 2.0.1-3

[0] looks like a bug that could be found when updating from etch to
lenny. Short summary: a ~/.gnome2/timer-applet *file* is created
but the current timer-applet tries to save a preset.xml in a
~/.gnome2/timer-applet *directory* and the applet is thus crashing
on the save of the presets.

This needs investigation, though. I'll do it in a few days.

Kind regards,

Several attempts to boot into a newly installed linux-image-2.6.26-1-686

I've read this announcement[0] and believe that the fix for
pngpread.c is
included in the current lenny version in debian, so I guess it must
have been
introduced after 1.2.27. However, I am trying to determine the patch
for
pngtest.c. Is it just this line:

-#define PNG_tIME_STRING_LENGTH 30
+#define PNG_tIME_STRING_LENGTH 29

Yes, that's it.

Oops-la, there's also this, to make the string actually fit in 29 bytes:

-static char tIME_string[PNG_tIME_STRING_LENGTH] = no tIME chunk present in
file;
+static char tIME_string[PNG_tIME_STRING_LENGTH] = tIME chunk is not present;

Hi,

I tried Octave from Debian experimental: I installed octave3.0,
-headers and -image.

I then tried to use pngread (e.g.) from octave-image. The
auto-completion works, but the function is not recognised :

Yepp, ABI change in our Octave package, meaning you can't load .oct
files compiled with an earlier version of Octave. There's a reason it's
   in experimental.

 Thomas

  Okay. Fine for me.

Just to understand : non-working packages in experimental don't deserve
  bug reports ?

Sure, but depending on the bug, you might be on your own. This is such a
 case :)

The problem is not the octave3.0 package in experimental, but the
different octave-forge packages in unstable. They need a recompile. This
however would mean that they wouldn't work with the current octave3.0
package in unstable, so we would need a new octave3.0 package in
 unstable as well.

Did I mention that we are in a freeze? :)

So, if you want me to upload all these packages, you will need to grant
me asylum afterwards - I fear the release team would come after me.

   Thomas

Well...

if this ABI change renders packages incompatible between them (i.e.
octave-image in unstable and octave3.0 in experimental), my vision of the
packages system is that they should conflict between them.

I don't know how, that's why I report bugs and don't maintain packages
(yet) ;)

Anyway, best regards and thanks for your time !

Bug#499569: gnupg2: diff for NMU version 2.0.9-3.1

thanks

Hi gnupg2-maintainers,

Here is the NMU for gnupg2 (versioned as 2.0.9-3.1).
pth seems to mess with the sigprocmask on i386 at least. As such
deinitializing pth (with pth_kill) before execv seems like a good idea.
Because that does not quite do the trick, I also manually save
and restore the sigprogmask.
Regarding the problem of reproducing, I should add to Mirco's comments
that it apparently only occurs when running in a i386 kernel, not in an
i386 chroot on and amd64 system.
After some more testing, I will upload the NMU.

Kind regards

T.

2008-10-04 Thread Luca Bruno
severity 273100 normal
tag 273100 l10n confirmed
thanks

Hello,
thanks a lot for your report.
Bumping to normal as the synopsis of the program is important, as it
affects a lot of other apt tools.
The attached patch doesn't fix translations.

Bug#501121: jd: package description inadequate

2008-10-04 Thread login:Penguin
Package: jd
Severity: wishlist

The package description hardly describes its features and
functionalities, which I would like to be more detailed and specific
about these things.

A rough draft of mine based on Mr. maintainer's original description is
as follows, though I have the impression that this one is too long and
needs some revisions.

* BEGINNING *
JD is a simple and easy-to-use browser for 2ch-style bulletin board
systems (or Internet forums), which ensures you comfortable 2ch browsing
experience with its various functionalities such as logging in,
message viewing/posting, image viewing, mouse gestures, ignore lists,
play-by-play mode, and so on, while significantly reducing server workloads
by bypassing CGI programs and directly retrieving thread data files
to your local hard drives.

2ch-style BBSes have their origins in 2channel, which is the most popular
Internet forum in Japan, and are often available only in the Japanese language.
Some of these BBSes are listed below.
 - 2channel (http://www.2ch.net)
 - Shitaraba (http://rentalbbs.livedoor.com/jbbs/)
 - Machi-BBS (http://www.machi.to/)

Following apt's advice to try apt-get -f install does work; any second,
 third,

I tried synaptic (which is what I normally use), and it worked too. I
include /var/log/apt/term.log below.

I should add that I've been following lenny. If this is a bug that
affects only people following lenny, it is much less of a problem than
if it affects upgrades from etch.

Bug#477559: Still fails with current Lenny packages

2008-10-04 Thread Santiago Garcia Mantinan
I have just updated the machine to current Lenny and it still fails in the
very same way as it used to.

I think I didn't mention that a normal kill doesn't kill the server and you
need a kill -9 to kill it and it doesn't restore the text mode after that,
the same totted X screen remains and keyboard doesn't seem to be working at
that time.

I can then start another X server (remotely as local keyboard and screen was
broken) and same thing will happen again.

Hope this helps.

Indeed. I still use sympa intensively but I didn't take time to keep an

Jonas Smeedegard put an effort for better Sympa packaging on git.debian.org.

Hi Raphael,

btw, are you 2 bugs today a simple coincidence with my linkedIn

2008/10/4 Raphael Geissert [EMAIL PROTECTED]:
 Package: nut
 Version: 2.2.2-8
 Severity: wishlist
 Tags: patch

Attached is a patch adding support for tripplite's avr750u UPS.
 Issues:
 * productid still needs to be specified in ups.conf

you missed to add an entry in drivers/tripplite-hid.c
-tripplite_claim() for that ;-)
and an entry in the hotplug script for the sake of completion.
thanks for the patch. I'll look into commiting it into the trunk, and
possibly in sid, depending on the next release date.

 * the battery charge information, at least as displayed by knutclient 0.9.4,
is either 0% or 100%, the latter only being displayed when the UPS is fully
 charged.
 * the runtime info is only updated after a test.battery.start.quick/deep,
 there's no calibrate.start/stop for it.

I don't know much about TL devices, and I've not dug the ml, but
Charles might have an answer to that.

Bit OT, but wanted to ask: is there anyone trying to add support for Koblenz'
 UPS?

never heard about it.
do you have any info on it, like the name of the windows software
provided, or the protocol used, ... ?

cheers,
Arnaud

Bug#500990: [Pkg-db-devel] Bug#500990: libdb-dev: Dependency issues triggered by (full-)upgrade for libdb*-dev

2008-10-04 Thread David Ayers
Hello Clint,

Thank you very much for your reply!

Am Freitag, den 03.10.2008, 19:01 + schrieb Clint Adams:

Not quite; we have moved from the form of libdb4.6-dev providing
libdb-dev to the form of libdb-dev being the real package to a new form where
libdb-dev is just a dummy package depending on libdb4.6-dev.
You are experiencing fallout from this last change.

The package dependencies could be updated so that the tools upgrade more
smoothly. However, this issue will only affect users of testing, such
as yourself, and thus this is not a critical issue for the release.

OK, so if I understand you correctly

- rather than accepting the suggestion to upgrade libdb-dev which claims
to be for 4.7.25.2 and would not match either libdb4.6 (4.6.21-8) [which
is what is currently installed] or libdb4.6 (4.6.21-11) [which is what
seems to the next package to migrate to testing]

- I should simply wait until libdb4.7 (4.7.25-4) migrates to testing

Correct? If so please feel free to close the report (actually could I
close it myself?) and I hope this report is helpful for others who were
confused like me.

Thanks again!
David Ayers

lists.dsbl.org needs to be removed from the default blacklists. You should
also ask for a lenny freeze exception to avoid the same situation as

Just for the records ... the problem could also be fixed with:

policyd-weight defaults| head -65|tail -10|grep -v list.dsbl.org

I don't know much about the Tripp Lite devices covered by the
usbhid-ups driver, but the usual debug suggestions apply. You can run
the driver with -DDD on the command line, and look for messages
related to battery charge.

Going out on a limb here, maybe it's something that we have to
explicitly poll (versus waiting for it to be reported on the interrupt
pipe), for the times when it is below 100%.

In any case, it's probably a good idea to first verify that knutclient
agrees with upsc.

Package: gdal

The current Version of gdal does not support Tiff files 4GB

systems Tiff library instead of the internal one provided by gdal.

The problem can be solved easily by adding --with-libtiff=internal to
debian/rules and removing libtiff4-dev from Build-Depends.

Bug#501130: ITP: snimpy -- interactive SNMP tool with Python

2008-10-04 Thread Vincent Bernat
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist
Owner: Vincent Bernat [EMAIL PROTECTED]

* Package name: snimpy
  Version : 0.2.1
Upstream Author : Vincent Bernat [EMAIL PROTECTED]
* URL : https://trac.luffy.cx/snimpy/
* License : MIT
  Programming Lang: Python and C
Description : interactive SNMP tool with Python

Snimpy is a Python-based tool providing a simple interface to build
SNMP queries. This interface aims at being the most Pythonic possible:
you grab scalars using attributes and columns are like dictionaries.

Snimpy can either be used interactively throught its console (derived
from Python own console or from IPython if available) or by writing
snimpy scripts which are just Python scripts with some global
variables available.

Bug#501131: geeqie: overwrites user-defined configuration

2008-10-04 Thread Stanislav Maslovski
Package: geeqie
Version: 1.0~alpha1-7
Severity: normal

I removed manually the files (and subdirs) under my ~./thumbnals/
directory. Then when I started geeqie after that I noticed that my
customized keyboard accelerators ceased to operate. I looked into ~./geeqie/
and found that the configuration files got overwritten.
This should not happen as thumbnails and accels are not related in any way.

Bug#501132: updated portmidi package available

2008-10-04 Thread Willem van Engen
Package: libportmidi0
Version: 20041117-1

I've updated the portmidi package to a recent release (2004-2008).
Changes include:
* new upstream release
* proper shared library linking (so dynamic loading works (see
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/portmidi/+bug/93728 ).
* watch file removed, since developers moved to sourceforge and I
haven't seen a good example on how to watch this
* fixed lintian warnings

Source and binary are found on my repository at
  http://willem.engen.nl/debian/
If you'd rather have the changes in a different form, feel free to ask;
but as the orig.tar.gz was changed too, a plain diff wouldn't suffice.
I hope the Debian package can be updated soon.

Kind regards,
- Willem

 Hi!

Since the package is mostly unusable, I set the severity to grave. I
will prepare an NMU shortly and upload to delayed/3.

Looks like i forgot to set this one to pending. The fix is in svn since 21.

Hi Jochen!

In this case, I won't do an NMU and just wait that you will upload a new

Bug#501133: please add patch to allow keeping fds open

2008-10-04 Thread Thomas Viehmann
Package: vte
Version: 1:0.16.14-3
Severity: important
X-Debbugs-CC: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hi Loic, Sebastian, Gnome Maintainers,

as witnessed by #493353, the GTK frontend to gdebi is completely broken
because it relies on a patch to vtk that provides a way to keep dpkg's
status-fd open. The patch looks fairly sane to me.
In terms of the lenny release, we seem to have three options
1) patch vtk as attached,
2) remove gdebi-gtk (or gdebi),
3) work around the problem (e.g. open a named pipe and invoke a dpkg
wrapper that proxies that to the dpkg status-fd).

At this point, the easiest path seems to be 1), with the main argument
against it being that upstream 0.17 does not seem to have incorporated
the patch.

Opinions? I'd be happy to actually do the upload, but I would prefer an
explicit OK for it, either here or on IRC.

Kind regards

T.

Actually, I have just realized that my assumption about the reason of this
bug was wrong. The actual reason was that there was no space left on my /home/
partition when I was using geeqie. After I cleaned the drive somewhat and
tried to reproduce the bug, I could not see it.

Anyway, the zero space condition must be somehow checked. So I will leave
this bug open.

I have not tried yet what will happen with alpha2 under the same conditions.

Bug#501132: some notes on the new package

2008-10-04 Thread Willem van Engen
I almost forgot, but there are two things I'm not fully sure about.

1. Lintian warned about an outdated standards-version. I've updated it
to the current policy's number, but couldn't find a list of policy
   changes. Should this be reverted?

2. Shared library version. The libraries still have a .0.0.0 suffix, but
I'm not sure if it should be bumped. The portmidi.h headers haven't
changed (but for some comments, changing function return type from
int to enum), except one thing: some defines for Pm_SetFilter were
changed since 2004. I doubt that anyone uses this functionality,
since a google search showed only portmidi sources, but I'd say that
recompilation would be needed in case it were used. I'm not sure how
to proceed. Really bump the major version and make it libportmidi1?

Bug#501134: RAW-pictures break down after copied on a crypted raid5

2008-10-04 Thread daniel starzmann
Package: linux-image-2.6.24-etchnhalf.1-486
Version: ?

Hello,
I have an extra-ordinary problem or perhaps an Kernel bug:

My Server:
* Debian Etch (Kernel: Etch-n-half), Samba 3.0.24
* 500gb harddisk with a system and a data partition. Both are crypted
with Luks (cipher:serpent-cbc-essiv:sha256)
* Raid 5 crypted with Luks (cipher: serpent-cbc-essiv:sha256)
* All partitions have the ext3 filesystem

Client1: Notebook (Windows XP and Fedora)
Client2: Desktop (Fedora)
I did all tests from both clients

My problem:
I tried to copy RAW pictures (*.cr2 files) from a client to the raid5
partition with the following 4 different ways.

1. I exported the raid partition with samba and copied the pictures with
Windows XP and the Windows Explorer
2. I copied the pictures through an smb-mount with Fedora with the
cp-command
3. I copied the pictures with the scp-command (first initiiated from
the client and then from the server)
4. I copied the pictures with the rsync-command (first initiiated from
the client and then from the server)

I checked the files after I had copied them with md5sum and I saw that
the values where different to the values of the original files.
The pictures where broken. They had lila stribes and where cutted in the
half.
I tried the same 4 methods and copied the pictures on the 500gb data
partition and there where no failures or md5sum differences.
Then I copied the pictures in an ssh shell with an normal cp-command
from the local-partition to the raid5-partition. The md5sum values where
the same, so this worked well.
So in my opinion the problem has to do with the crypted raid5.
I tried to reproduce this failures with other files but i had this
problem only with RAW (*.cr2 Canon) picture files.

I tried to repair my system with these 3 Methods:
1. fsck.ext3 -y /dev/mapper/md0_crypt
2. fsck.ext3 -c -p /dev/mapper/md0_crypt
3. server rebooted a few times
I couldn't find out any failure messages in the log-files or at the
booting.

After many hours I found this out:
With Kernel 2.6.24-etchnhalf.1-686, Kernel 2.6.24-etchnhalf.1-486 and
Kernel 2.6.26-bpo.1-486 I could reproduce my Image-copy-problem.
As I booted the older Kernel 2.6.18-6-486 I where able to copy the
pictures with any of the methods above and the md5sum values where OK.
Because of this I think its an Kernel problem.

I absolutly don't know what additional information I should post with
this E-Mail, please write me what I should add or where I should post
the extra-information.
Sorry if I addressed this E-Mail wrong, I don't know where to go with
this problem/bug. With bug-buddy I weren't able to make a Bug-Report.

Nice regards

Daniel

This should not happen as thumbnails and accels are not related in any way.

Can you please test whether alpha2 in unstable behaves same?

Reproduced it with alpha2 by simultaneous writing to disk and viewing new
files in geeqie (so that it creates new thumbnails and also eats up space).

Bug#501135: README.Debian: The information about Xaw3d and Gnome are no longer valid

2008-10-04 Thread Andreas Stempfhuber
Package: vice
Version: 1.22-3
Severity: minor

Hello,

README.Debian contains:

Despite the availability of a Gnome interface, this package is still
compiled for use with Xaw3d, partly to avoid the nest of dependencies
that goes along with Gnome, and partly because fullscreen mode is not
available with the Gnome interface.

which should be removed since it's no longer valid.

Regards,

Andi

This change probably needs to be applied to the lenny package to fix the

Yes. I'll include this in my next (and hopefully last) update for Lenny.
