Bug#525387: jabref: Does not work with XMonad window manager
From: gregor herrmann gre...@debian.org On Fri, 24 Apr 2009 10:49:17 +0300, Harri Kiiskinen wrote: JabRef starts with an empty window when used with XMonad window manager. Hi, I just came across http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=504524 which was originally filed against jabref and then reassigned to sun-java6. It looks very similar to the symptoms you report. The bugreport suggests to play with the window manager and/or use openjdk instead of sun-java. Fiddling with AWT_TOOLKIT does not help, as jabref won't start with MToolkit at all, and XToolkit gives the original behaviour. What helps, though, is to run 'wmname compiz' and then start jabref from the command line. Don't know much about java and had hard time following the bugreport you referenced, but this certainly seems very similar, and one of the workarounds does even work! Bug#546854: openssh-server: has unspecified limit for number of sessions tunnelled through controlmaster
Package: openssh-server Version: 1:5.1p1-7 Severity: normal Hi, I can only reach most of my systems through a dual-homed host which I access via proxycommand ssh dhhost socket %h %p. When I use controlmaster, there seems to be a rather low session limit of around ten sessions which can be tunneled through. When this limit is reached, the server logs error: no more sessions and the client holding the controlmaster spews open failed: administratively prohibited: open failed to its console. In some cases, closing one of the sessions does not immediately free up a slot, but new connections become possible after waiting a few minutes. Googling for the error message suggests that there is a macro MAX_SESSIONS which can be increased, but the current sources only contain this string inside debian/changelog when it was documented that this macro was increased to 64 somewhen in 2007. So I suspect that this is now dynamically allocated, eliminating the macro from the sources. However, the limit remains and is a rather severe limitation especially when a security update needs to be rolled out (I do this in parallel and frequently hit this limit). Browsing the remote directories using Konqueror shows all files. If I do an 'ls|less' on the directory with over 131 files the kernel panics and the system either locks up or reboots. Then you have a kernel bug. Reassigning. I agree this has nothing to do with samba, but isn't it weird that this is the first time we get such report? Hostname is required and thus installed anyway, why do you think it makes sense to add a different 'domainname' binary? From a short look into the sourcecode there's but one function call missing in hostname. So I'd prefer asking the nis maintainers to drop their domainname binary in favour of hostname. On Tue, Sep 15, 2009 at 08:38:22PM +0100, Jurij Smakov wrote: If the PROM console driver still has some utility, maybe the boot option is the way to go... does it? Does anyone still manufacture new machines with new and strange console types that we don't support? :) The PROM console driver has no relevance today at all. It should simply never be used. OK, cool, please remove it, and also please propagate that to the stable branches so we don't miss anyone who's not on the bleeding edge. Please feel free to follow up on http://bugs.debian.org/525958 which I've filed in April to have the CONFIG_PROM_CONSOLE removed. Yeah, definitely, Cc:ed. Dave has in the meantime killed it completely in his stable tree: http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/davem/sparc-2.6.git;a=commit;h=09d3f3f0e02c8a900d076c302c5c02227f33572d There's another commit that takes it out of the defconfigs completely - it was already unset there for a while now. So it's pretty much official now (well, Linus still has to take it in, but that should be a formality). -- 2. Bug#546834: debootstrap fails when invoked from lh_build
On 2009-09-16 09:19 +0200, Frans Pop wrote: On Wednesday 16 September 2009, Tak Auyeung wrote: lh_build failed and stopped in debootstrap phase. lh_build is set up to use sid for both bootstrap and chroot. Attached please find a log of lh_build (build.log) and a log of debootstrap (debootstrap.log) when it was invoked from lh_build. Thanks! Thanks for including the logs. As you can see in the debootstrap log, the real problem is in either util-linux or insserv. Setting up util-linux (2.16-3) ... install-info: warning: maintainer scripts should not call install-info anymore, install-info: warning: this is handled now by a dpkg trigger provided by the install-info: warning: install-info package; package util-linux should be updated. update-alternatives: using /bin/more to provide /usr/bin/pager (pager) in auto mode. insserv: Service checkroot has to be enabled to start service hwclock insserv: exiting now! dpkg: error processing util-linux (--configure): subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1 The install-info message is just a warning. The real problem looks to be a boot dependency error. Reassigning to util-linux. It seems that util-linux is missing a dependency on initscripts for the checkroot service. Similar for procps and the mountkernfs service. However, by that logic any package providing an initscript would need to depend on initscripts; is that really desirable? Not everyone believe that KDE 4 is better and such requirement is somehow clumsy because the reason of it lies in some insignificant (by the comparison with the topic of KDE version switching) busyness with install-info. Please, be fair! If you managed to put konqueror on hold, you can surely do the same for dpkg. Sid evolves, if you don't want use newer software, then don't use sid (hint: KDE4 replaces KDE3 in sid). It doesn't pull anything new, it just forces the upgrade of what's already installed if you have packages that have not been transitionned to the separate install-info package. So, I required to go to KDE 4 from KDE 3 just because of some obscure install-info that dpkg needs? If you use sid yes, you can also decide to not upgrade dpkg or to rebuild a patched dpkg that doesn't have the breaks relationship. Maybe it will be better to make it to live peacefully with old packages? It does live peacefully with old packages, it tells them when a change breaks them so that the user doesn't experience the breakage. That said, the kind of breakage related to install-info is only of the sort my info page is not listed in the index. I agree it's not an important breakage but I don't see a good reason to revert the change. Wow! The good reason is: you make me and other people set dpkg on hold and be deprived from the features and bugfixes in 1.15.4. For who you made efforts then? For yourself? For who you serve? For people like me or for yourself? You suggest me to make work by fiddling with your dpkg, dragging custom version? For who then you make your job in Debian man? If KDE 4 doesn't suit you, you'd better file bugs on it so that it can be usable for you when squeeze gets out. Do you realize that KDE 3 and 4 are whole different products? Did you used them per chance to suggest me to switch to KDE4 or not use sid? By putting metainfo about KDE in dpkg you proven your sillyness. There was such a bug in os-prober already and a new version has just been uploaded now which fixes this: #546546 Sorry, I did not look for bugs of os-prober. However, I think you should conflict (or break) with os-prober versions with which grub does not work. Why should we conflict or break with it? Even the lenny version of os-prober works fine except that it can happen that the filesystems aren't unmounted correctly or that it hangs with crypted partitions. Note that we can't change the lenny version anymore. Well through a point release but I'm not sure the RMs accept such a change and in lenny we only suggest os-prober not recommend it. And now we recommend it but it's a versioned recommend (= 1.32) and testing still has os-prober 1.28. So only in sid it gets installed by default and that is now fixed. The problem with encrypted partitions came up only the last days. But we suggest (well actually we recommended os-prober first) since 1.96+20080413-1 Well okay I just change the Recommends now to = 1.33 just to make you happy in the next upload but that won't change anything. -- Felix Zielcke Proud Debian Maintainer -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#546834: debootstrap fails when invoked from lh_build
[Sven Joachim] It seems that util-linux is missing a dependency on initscripts for the checkroot service. Similar for procps and the mountkernfs service. Yes, I believe this is correct, and have split this bug in two and assigned one to procps. However, by that logic any package providing an initscript would need to depend on initscripts; is that really desirable? It does not follow from that logic. Most scripts do not have direct and hard dependencies on scripts in initscripts. Most scripts depend on the virtual facilities like $remote_fs, and would not have this problem. Also, this would only affect scripts installed by debootstrap before initscripts is installed. There are two solutions to this, either the hard init.d script dependency can be made soft (ie move the dependency from required-start to should-start), or add initscripts as a dependency for procps and util-linux. I'm not sure which solution make most sense, but suspect the latter is the proper solution if the scripts really need each other. Bug#546884: Default Bcc handling (still) broken in some cases
Package: mutt Severity: important Version: 1.5.18-6+b1 Hi, Glad that the docs are updated [1] to reflect that exim4 does not strip Bcc headers (which I just confirmed with a field test of just under 200 people who are now pissed to have their email addresses published...), but I would still appreciate it if the default configuration would work. The arguments that were posted after #304718 was closed [2] actually still apply. Considering that people really expect their Bcc to work, and making it not work is quite a critical failure with all sorts of privacy issues, I would really like to see a solution for this. The obvious solution would be to unset write_bcc again, also considering that it is not at all clear whose task removing Bcc headers really is. Saying exim or the MTA should do this is fine from a theoretical point of view, but as long as they're not doing it (and not doing it intentionally, see [3] and [4]) In cases like these, I'd rather have a default setting that does double work in some cases, than a setting that might not remove the Bcc headers in some cases... I understand that it makes sense to stick to the upstream default configuration in this case, but perhaps this should be taken up with upstream as well? Gr. Hello Paul, ok, i could reproduce the 'port parse error message', but only adding a 'fake' space at the end of the line. i don't see such fake space in your mail, but i assume it was there somehow :-) The fake space might have been a dos CR. The URL came from a web radio playlist, which can very well have been CRLF encoded. Peter's package installs and runs well for me on Ubuntu Karmic. The init script looks good and it runs under the openerp user. My only thought is that when running postgres, openerp-server and openerp-web on the same server it might be better to run openerp-web under a different user. That way should openerp-web be compromised an attacker would not be handed an account with ident authentication to the postgres database and rights to drop things, they would still have to go through the openerp-server api to do anything to the databases -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. AFAIK, qemu support out of tree building, so we can do: mkdir build-static cd build-static ../configure --options $(MAKE) -C debian/static-build The same can be done for the main build, which also simplify the clean target. Also given static binaries are huge, I do wonder if we shouldn't put the static version in a separate package. This is maybe the time to rework a bit the packaging. Maybe something like the following: - qemu-user: all dynamically linked qemu-user binaries - qemu-user-static: all statically linked qemu-user binaries - qemu-system: all qemu-system binaries - qemu: meta package depending on qemu-system, qemu-user and maybe qemu-user-static (Recommends:? Suggests: ?). attached is a patch against qemu from experimental for an updated debian/rules to build qemu-user, qemu-user-static and qemu-system, using out of tree builds. it's still got some rough edges. to get the pc-bios working, it still required a ordinary ./configure run; i couldn't figure out how to get it to work with the out-of-tree builds. it also manually installs the qemu-user binaries, instead of using make install, which installed keymap and other files also present in the qemu-system package. i'm thinking those are only needed for the qemu-system package anyways. i'm not sure which of the packages should install the libqemu.a file(s), or other .a files. some have the same filenames. seems to work, though. :) live well, vagrant diff --git a/debian/rules b/debian/rules index b755a27..d8f71bd 100755 --- a/debian/rules +++ b/debian/rules @@ -42,19 +42,55 @@ qemu_docs = \ config-host.mak: configure dh_testdir + # pc-bios targets CFLAGS=$(CFLAGS) ./configure \ --prefix=/usr \ --disable-blobs \ --disable-strip \ $(conf_arch) + # qemu-system + mkdir -p debian/system-build + + cd debian/system-build ; CFLAGS=$(CFLAGS) ../../configure \ + --prefix=/usr \ + --disable-blobs \ + --disable-strip \ + --disable-linux-user \ + --disable-bsd-user \ + --disable-darwin-user \ + $(conf_arch) + + # qemu-user + mkdir -p debian/user-build + + cd debian/user-build ; CFLAGS=$(CFLAGS) ../../configure \ + --prefix=/usr \ + --disable-blobs \ + --disable-strip \ + --disable-system \ + $(conf_arch) + + mkdir -p debian/user-static-build + + # qemu-user-static + cd debian/user-static-build ; CFLAGS=$(CFLAGS) ../../configure \ + --prefix=/usr \ + --disable-blobs \ + --disable-strip \ + --disable-system \ + --static \ + $(conf_arch) + setup-source: patch $(MAKE) -f debian/rules config-host.mak build: setup-source dh_testdir - $(MAKE) $(NJOBS) + $(MAKE) -C debian/system-build $(NJOBS) + $(MAKE) -C debian/user-build $(NJOBS) + $(MAKE) -C debian/user-static-build $(NJOBS) $(MAKE) -C pc-bios bamboo.dtb $(MAKE) -C pc-bios mpc8544ds.dtb @@ -66,6 +102,7 @@ clean: unpatch rm -f $(qemu_docs) rm -f pc-bios/*.dtb + rm -rf debian/*-build dh_clean @@ -75,18 +112,30 @@ install: build dh_clean -k dh_installdirs -a - $(MAKE) DESTDIR=$(CURDIR)/debian/qemu install + $(MAKE) -C debian/system-build DESTDIR=$(CURDIR)/debian/qemu-system install + + zcat /usr/share/etherboot/e1000-82540em.zrom.gz $(CURDIR)/debian/qemu-system/usr/share/qemu/pxe-e1000.bin + zcat /usr/share/etherboot/rtl8029.zrom.gz$(CURDIR)/debian/qemu-system/usr/share/qemu/pxe-ne2k_pci.bin + zcat /usr/share/etherboot/pcnet32.zrom.gz$(CURDIR)/debian/qemu-system/usr/share/qemu/pxe-pcnet.bin + zcat /usr/share/etherboot/rtl8139.zrom.gz$(CURDIR)/debian/qemu-system/usr/share/qemu/pxe-rtl8139.bin - zcat /usr/share/etherboot/e1000-82540em.zrom.gz $(CURDIR)/debian/qemu/usr/share/qemu/pxe-e1000.bin - zcat /usr/share/etherboot/rtl8029.zrom.gz$(CURDIR)/debian/qemu/usr/share/qemu/pxe-ne2k_pci.bin - zcat /usr/share/etherboot/pcnet32.zrom.gz$(CURDIR)/debian/qemu/usr/share/qemu/pxe-pcnet.bin - zcat /usr/share/etherboot/rtl8139.zrom.gz$(CURDIR)/debian/qemu/usr/share/qemu/pxe-rtl8139.bin + cp $(CURDIR)/pc-bios/*.dtb $(CURDIR)/debian/qemu-system/usr/share/qemu/ - cp $(CURDIR)/pc-bios/bamboo.dtb $(CURDIR)/pc-bios/mpc8544ds.dtb $(CURDIR)/debian/qemu/usr/share/qemu/ + for target in debian/system-build/*softmmu ; do \ + cp $(CURDIR)/$$target/libqemu.a $(CURDIR)/debian/libqemu-dev/usr/lib/qemu/`basename $$target`/ ; \ + cp $(CURDIR)/$$target/*.h $(CURDIR)/debian/libqemu-dev/usr/include/qemu/`basename $$target`/ ; \ + done + + # install qemu-user binaries + mkdir -p $(CURDIR)/debian/qemu-user/usr/bin/ + for target in debian/user-build/*-*-user/qemu-* ; do \ + cp $(CURDIR)/$$target $(CURDIR)/debian/qemu-user/usr/bin/ ; \ + done - for target in
Bug#546891: alevt: missing manpage description of the new options: -progname and -pid
Package: alevt Version: 1:1.6.2-1 Severity: minor There is no mention of the new options (-progname and -pid) which are important to be able to use the DVB interface properly. A minimal approach could be to use the corresponding part of the alevt --help output: The -progname or -pid option specify the program or teletext PID if using the DVB interface. But I think something like the following would be more helpful: The -progname or -pid option specify the program or teletext PID if using the DVB interface. If neither of these two options is used, alevt outputs informations about the currently accessible streams and uses the first of these these PIDs as default. This output contains the PIDs and names that can be used as an input for the -progname or -pid option in the context of the currently chosen TV channel. Examples: select teletext stream by PID hex value alevt -vbi /dev/dvb/adapter0/demux0 -pid 0x0237 select teletext stream by PID decimal value alevt -vbi /dev/dvb/adapter0/demux0 -pid 567 select teletext stream by program name alevt -vbi /dev/dvb/adapter0/demux0 -progname kabel eins -- System Information: Debian Release: 5.0 APT prefers jaunty-updates APT policy: (500, 'jaunty-updates'), (500, 'jaunty-security'), (500, 'jaunty') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Kernel: Linux 2.6.28-15-generic (SMP w/2 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=de_DE.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=de_DE.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Versions of packages alevt depends on: ii libc6 2.9-4ubuntu6.1 GNU C Library: Shared libraries ii libpng12-0 1.2.27-2ubuntu2 PNG library - runtime ii libx11-62:1.1.99.2-1ubuntu2 X11 client-side library ii makedev 2.3.1-88 creates device files in /dev ii udev141-1.2 rule-based device node and kernel ii zlib1g 1:1.2.3.3.dfsg-12ubuntu2 compression library - runtime alevt recommends no packages. alevt suggests no packages. -- no debconf information -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#546757: closed by Felix Zielcke fziel...@z-51.de (Re: Bug#546757: grub: os-prober tries (and fails) to mount crypted partition at grub installation time)

Perhaps you will want to clone this bug to os-proper for a wishbug in order to have an option to avoid such filesystems. There was such a bug in os-prober already and a new version has just been uploaded now which fixes this: #546546 Sorry, I did not look for bugs of os-prober. However, I think you should conflict (or break) with os-prober versions with which grub does not work. Else, if someone has an old (lenny) version of os-prober and he upgrade/install grub, he can get this kind of bug (as recommends are not necessarily fulfilled). Oh and I forgot that the Ubuntu version always Recommended os-prober (well even depended on it) And britney respects Breaks now. So if I'd add it, we'd be stuck with the current squeeze grub2 version as long as os-prober doestn't migrate, which is frozen because of the udeb. So if we fix another RC bug it'll take a while until it reaches squeeze just because of the Conflicts/Breaks. -- Felix Zielcke Proud Debian Maintainer -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe.
