Bug#571469: [pkg-ntp-maintainers] Bug#571469: Will ntpd notice it can resolve after some time?
On Sun, Jun 13, 2010 at 03:09:56AM +0200, Regid Ichira wrote: I had the issue in 571469 here after using parallel booting for the first time. Am I right that the problem is that ntpd can not resolve names? Will ntpd be able to notice, by itself, after some time, that it can resolve names? With the old booting sequence, was ntpd started after bind? Do we need one more Required-Start option, namely $resolver? It should figure this out after some time, if other software on the system doesn't tell ntpd otherwise. It should start a slave process to do so. There are currently 2 issues I'm aware of that might cause some issues, causing it to return wrong info for hostname lookups: - libnss-mdns: #561622 - libc6: #582916 Atleast the libc6 issue alone still makes ntpd behave properly it my case. It will log a message: host name not found, but it will not add (permanent) after it, and it keeps working. However, it would be nice that the if the network is up, that it's actually useful. We currently wait for: $network $remote_fs $syslog And it's my understanding that this should be enough, atleast that's what I've been told when we added those. If it's not doing what it should, I suggest you file a bug against sysv-rc or something. If you still think there is an issue with ntpd please open a new bug. This one is about a configuration problem and has been closed. Kurt -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Bug#576013: Patch seems to be good
Hi Julien. Il 13/06/2010 07:33, Julien BLACHE ha scritto: The patch seems to be working on my Macbook6.1, amd64. The backlight regulation works (even if it worked also without pommed, don't know That's a bit of a problem :) The only thing that actually needs testing is the backlight :) If you could try to find out what's driving the backlight and shutting it down to test pommed, that'd be nice. I think GNOME was after the management of the backlight, even without pommed. So I created a test user, logged in with that test user using IceWM and stopped pommed: the backlight regulation didn't work. Starting again pommed it worked (but didn't show the popup that GNOME showed) and stopping it again it didn't work. So I think that pommed is working! :-) The same things is happening using a virtual terminal. :-) Giovanni. -- Giovanni Mascellani mascell...@poisson.phc.unipi.it Pisa, Italy Web: http://poisson.phc.unipi.it/~mascellani Jabber: g.mascell...@jabber.org / giova...@elabor.homelinux.org signature.asc Description: OpenPGP digital signature
Bug#585693: ctwm: Dragging a window in the workspace manager causes it to pop right
Package: ctwm Version: 3.7-3 Severity: normal Tags: patch This has annoyed me for years. With ReallyMoveInWorkspaceManager set, you can drag windows (within workspaces and between them) by manipulating the tiny thumbnail versions in the workspace manager. However, on most of my machines (like the one I'm typing this on) this causes the real window to pop to the right of the screen. You can control which workspace it ends up in and where it's placed vertically, but it will always be placed to the right. It turns out upstream has fixed this bug in 3.8a, although I couldn't see it mentioned in their changelog. I cherry-picked the relevant change (one character) and attach it here as a patch. (I use ctwm exclusively, and yet I haven't had an urge to move to 3.8a ... but I note that it's been out for years without making it into Debian. I guess your time and energy is limited, too.) Bug#585695: nvidia-kernel-source: Manual built of module does not consider already set KVERS and KSRC environment variables
Package: nvidia-kernel-source Version: 195.36.24-1 Severity: important Tags: squeeze The latest change in debian/rules applies a new behaviour of the build script which makes manual building the module not working anymore according to documentation README.debian method #3: I'm using several different kernels on my machine, and normally I build the nvidia packages for all of them by just setting the respective environment variables KVERS and KSRC to the different values and then building the modules one after another manually by calling /usr/src/modules/nvidia-kernel/debian/rules binary_modules. The latest changes in version 195.36.24-2 do not consider these already set variables anymore but, as far as I understood the script takes the version from the target of /usr/src/linux, which, on my machine always points to the 'main' kernel, meaning the one currently in testing. So, compiling for different versions always needs a change of that symlink including the risk of letting this point to a wrong version afterwards when forgetting to re-set it. Please, either update the documentation to give the user a hint why building does not work as he's used to or (preferrably) let the script check if these variables are already set and consider them. Bug#585699: libmodplug0c2: Library crashes when playing music modules on amd64
Package: libmodplug0c2 Version: 1:0.8.8-1 Severity: grave Justification: renders package unusable Version 0.8.7 of libmodplug library is not working properly on amd64. Playing any music module will cause the library to crash. This affects gstreamer-plugins-bad, which links to this library and this in turn affects other software such as the gnome file browser (which can't preview music modules, but instead crashes). I have verified that upstream version 0.8.8 resolves this problem. I can provide a backtrace of the crash, but bringing in a new upstream release seems like the best fix here. -- System Information: Debian Release: squeeze/sid APT prefers lucid-updates APT policy: (500, 'lucid-updates'), (500, 'lucid-security'), (500, 'lucid') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Kernel: Linux 2.6.32-22-generic (SMP w/2 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=sv_SE.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=sv_SE.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Versions of packages libmodplug0c2 depends on: ii libc6 2.11.1-0ubuntu7.1 Embedded GNU C Library: Shared lib ii libgcc11:4.4.3-4ubuntu5 GCC support library ii libstdc++6 4.4.3-4ubuntu5The GNU Standard C++ Library v3 libmodplug0c2 recommends no packages. libmodplug0c2 suggests no packages. -- no debconf information -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Hello Mark, On Sun, Jun 13, 2010 at 04:17, Mark Purcell m...@debian.org wrote: Matthias, What foo should I put in my debian/control file to automatically generate the correct depends: good luck waiting for a reply from him... We currently just have: XB-Python-Version: ${python:Versions} Depends: ${python:Depends}, python-dbus (= 0.80), python-imaging, python-pexpect, python-notify But that doesn't limit the Depends to the python version the package was built with. It seems that I could hard code: XS-Python-Version: 2.5 that is wrong, unless your package can *only* work with 2.5 But that would be too much and the package would then have to be manually updated every-time you upversion python. The correct way to handle it is to set XS-P-V to = 2.5 (that declares the package only works with version 2.5 onward) or even to all (that declares the package can use any of the supported version of Python in Debian) and then build the package for all the supported versions in debian/rules. You can call pyversions (with parameters, IIRC -s for all the supported versions) then loop over those versions and call python$ver setup.py build and then install on each of them. Also, I suggest to use a python helper program, and the debian-python community suggests python-support, which is reliable and well-maintained. Bug#585695: [pkg-nvidia-devel] Bug#585695: nvidia-kernel-source: Manual built of module does not consider already set KVERS and KSRC environment variables
Edgar Sippel for.your.spam.o...@web.de writes: The latest change in debian/rules applies a new behaviour of the build script which makes manual building the module not working anymore according to documentation README.debian method #3: I'm using several different kernels on my machine, and normally I build the nvidia packages for all of them by just setting the respective environment variables KVERS and KSRC to the different values and then building the modules one after another manually by calling /usr/src/modules/nvidia-kernel/debian/rules binary_modules. Those variables are, speaking generally, taken into account; otherwise, nvidia-grahics-modules wouldn't build, since that's how it works. However, the relationship between environment variables and makefile variables are always tricky, and I suspect what's happened is that the makefile is no longer honoring the environment variable over what's in debian/rules. As a workaround for the time being, please pass the settings directly on the debian/rules invocation line; in other words, like: /usr/src/modules/nvidia-kernel/debian/rules binary_modules \ KSRC=/path/to/kernel/source KVERS=2.6.34-foo That should work. We'll either update the documentation accordingly or figure out the right way to tell make to honor environment variables. -- Russ Allbery (r...@debian.org) http://www.eyrie.org/~eagle/ -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. The package maintainer agreed for the NMU or did not respond in four days, so I will proceed with the NMU. The full planned schedule is available at the end of this mail. The package is currently translated to: cs de es eu fi fr gl it ja nb nl pt pt_BR ru sk sv vi Among these, the following translations are incomplete: fi If you did any of the, currently incomplete, translations you will get ANOTHER mail with the translation to update. Other translators also have the opportunity to create new translations for this package. Once completed, please send them as a bug report against the mailgraph package so I can incorporate them in the build. The deadline for receiving updates and new translations is Saturday, June 19, 2010. If you are not in time you can always send your translation to the BTS. The POT file is attached to this mail. If the maintainer objects to this process I will immediately abort my NMU and send him/her all updates I receive. Otherwise the following will happen (or already has): Tuesday, June 08, 2010 : send the first intent to NMU notice to the package maintainer. Sunday, June 13, 2010 : send this notice Saturday, June 19, 2010 : (midnight) deadline for receiving translation updates Sunday, June 20, 2010 : build the package and upload it to DELAYED/7-day send the NMU patch to the BTS Sunday, June 27, 2010 : NMU uploaded to incoming Thanks for your efforts and time. -- -- # SOME DESCRIPTIVE TITLE. # Copyright (C) YEAR THE PACKAGE'S COPYRIGHT HOLDER # This file is distributed under the same license as the PACKAGE package. # FIRST AUTHOR em...@address, YEAR. # #, fuzzy msgid msgstr Project-Id-Version: PACKAGE VERSION\n Report-Msgid-Bugs-To: no...@debian.org\n POT-Creation-Date: 2006-11-14 23:38+0100\n PO-Revision-Date: YEAR-MO-DA HO:MI+ZONE\n Last-Translator: FULL NAME em...@address\n Language-Team: LANGUAGE l...@li.org\n MIME-Version: 1.0\n Content-Type: text/plain; charset=CHARSET\n Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit\n #. Bug#104373: Subdirectory under /usr/lib/cgi-lib should be explicitly allowed
Le Sat, Jun 12, 2010 at 12:35:41PM -0700, Russ Allbery a écrit : Despite its age, this bug is rather straightforward and is something we really should have fixed years ago. The current wording around locations of CGI programs implies that subdirectories of /usr/lib/cgi-bin may not be used, but of course this is very widely used in packages already in the archive and works with a typical web server configuration. Here is a patch that explicitly allows this. Hi all, will web servers find the CGI scripts automagically in /usr/lib/cgi-bin/package? If not, there is not much advantage to move them under /usr/lib as it is done now. Most other parts for packaged web sites are already in /usr/share/package. For simple sites, having the CGIs in /usr/lib/cgi-bin/ makes the maintainer's task simpler as he does not have to write webserver configuration files, but for more complex packages, it sometimes makes the task harder, for instance when the CGI scripts need to be patched because relative links are broken by the move. There were discussions along those lines on debian-devel a couple of monthes ago. I suggest to seriously consider to drop the requirement to separate the CGI scripts from the other files of the packaged websites. Bug#369316: [pkg-nvidia-devel] Bug#369316: nvidia-glx: please make the glx part installable without the rest
Russ Allbery wrote: While I agree that the dependency makes life annoying for that particular case, not having the dependency causes all sorts of problems in the more common use case of a regular host. nvidia-glx gets upgraded without upgrading the kernel module and then stops working, or the kernel module isn't installed and users are mystified over why the package doesn't run. I'm hesitant to change the dependency to a recommends because I think a lot more people will have difficulty getting the right set of packages installed and everything working (and continuing to work) if the dependency is less strict. I'm not completely certain on this, and could be convinced, but I'm nervous about it. A possible solution I see for this problem would be to move the libraries to some nvidia-glx-core package, which is required by nvidia-glx (so current setups won't be affected). Will be a bit work to migrate the diversions and the trigger properly. We should decide on this before we update the legacy packages. Forgot to mention: sysprof or oprofile profiles of slow and fast runs might be interesting, at least if the CPU is pegged during the runs. Here are 2 sysprof runs: - UMS / fast: - kernel 11.25% - X 77.20% - KMS / slow: - kernel 90.28% - X 5.79% Unfortunately, there's no information about where in the kernel the cycles are burnt. This information should be available with sysprof 1.1.x and a kernel with the performance counter/event framework. Quite a nice tool: __libc_start_main 0,00% 93,67% _start 0,02% 87,66% In file /usr/bin/Xorg 0,13% 87,64% In file /usr/lib/xorg/modules/libexa.so 0,04% 86,60% In file /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/radeon_drv.so0,08% 86,48% radeon_bo_open 0,00% 79,87% In file /usr/lib/libdrm_radeon.so.1.0.00,00% 79,87% drmCommandWriteRead 0,00% 79,86% __kernel_vsyscall 0,00% 79,86% - - kernel - - 0,00% 79,86% on_each_cpu 36,81% 36,81% __purge_vmap_area_lazy20,31% 20,31% flush_all_zero_pkmaps 7,84% 7,84% vm_unmap_aliases 1,65% 1,65% What do you think that means? I think it could confirm my suspicion below, reassigning to the kernel. Would be great if you could try if it's better with a 2.6.33 or 2.6.34 kernel. Anyway, this probably means it's an issue in the kernel, not the X driver. May be solved already in newer kernels, there have been some AGP performance improvements which I'm not sure have made it into Debian's 2.6.32 DRM backport. BTW, does booting the kernel with radeon.agpmode=-1 work around the problem? It'll make things slower in general but it looks like it should help for this problem, which would further confirm the above. The test runs at 65FPS with radeon.agpmode=-1 (~3-4x faster than without this option, but ~4-5x slower than without KMS). On 2.6.34-1-686 (from experimental) the test runs at 150 FPS. It's better though still 2x slower. -- Sylvain -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact listmas...@lists.debian.org

Adam D. Barratt a...@adam-barratt.org.uk (05/06/2010): The attached trivial patch guards the call linking in the locales files with a check that debian/cfdisk-udeb actually exists, which will be the case on architectures where the package is built. Anyway, better late than never: tested on my kfreebsd-i386 porterbox, and the patch indeed fixes the FTBFS. Bug#104373: Subdirectory under /usr/lib/cgi-lib should be explicitly allowed
On Sun, Jun 13, 2010 at 06:03:12PM +0900, Charles Plessy wrote: If not, there is not much advantage to move them under /usr/lib as it is done now. Most other parts for packaged web sites are already in /usr/share/package. For simple sites, having the CGIs in /usr/lib/cgi-bin/ makes the maintainer's task simpler as he does not have to write webserver csonfiguration files, but for more complex packages, it sometimes makes the task harder, for instance when the CGI scripts need to be patched because relative links are broken by the move. There were discussions along those lines on debian-devel a couple of monthes ago. I suggest to seriously consider to drop the requirement to separate the CGI scripts from the other files of the packaged websites. i don't think there's any *requirement*, as this is all in should statements. in isolation from outside context i think the change russ describes makes sense, but generally speaking i think the web-related suggestions in policy are very dated and much of it ought to be phased out in deference to the webapps policy (or the webapps policy phased in) sean signature.asc Description: Digital signature

[Holger Levsen] debian-edu-config depends on lsof, which is not available on kfreebsd-*, which is a release architecture. Well, the correct fix would be to get lsof available on kfreebsd, not drop it as a dependency for d-e-config. lsof is used by the scripts in the d-e-config package. Bug#585068: [PATCH] Fix grub-probe partition naming on FreeBSD
The following patch is aimed at fixing this Debian bug: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=585068 I've tested it on Debian GNU/kFreeBSD and it seems to be producing sensible output now. The one glitch is that if you ask it to probe /dev/ad0s1a, it returns (hd0,msdos1) rather than (hd0,msdos1,bsd1): this is because both /dev/ad0s1 and /dev/ad0s1a have the same start sector, and it just uses the first one it finds. When I set prefix to (hd0,msdos1)/boot/grub, GRUB can read from that perfectly well, so can I ignore this glitch on the basis that it doesn't cause a practical problem? 2010-06-13 Colin Watson cjwat...@ubuntu.com * kern/emu/hostdisk.c: Include sys/ioctl.h and sys/disklabel.h on FreeBSD. Bug#560238: tech-ctte: Default value for net.ipv6.bindv6only sysctl
reassign 560238 tech-ctte thanks Dear members of the Technical Committee, There has been an extensive discussion about the proper default value of the net.ipv6.bindv6only sysctl, both on the debian-devel mailing list and in bugreport 560238. Since people are clearly divided on the issue, and it is unlikely a compromise can be found, I have forwarded it to you for a decision. Please read the past discussion, but to summarise the arguments for both possible default values: net.ipv6.bindv6only = 0 --- * This is the default value of the Linux kernel. * This value is used as a default in many other Linux distributions. * This behaviour is the opposite of the default of the FreeBSD kernel. * Many applications work properly (ie, support both IPv4 and IPv6 simultaneously) only with this setting. * The behaviour of the network stack with this value conforms to RFC 3493 sections 3.7 and 5.3. * It is said to conform to POSIX 2008, Volume 2, Section 2.10.20. * Instead of IPv4 addresses, sockets return IPv6-mapped addresses, and not all software handles this properly (ie, and ACL for an IPv4 address gets ignored because the software only sees an IPv6 address). * This value does not introduce new bugs. * Setting this value now will keep unstable in a more usable state. net.ipv6.bindv6only = 1 --- * This restricts IPv6 addresses to IPv6 sockets, and IPv4 address to IPv4 sockets, making interpretation of addresses unambiguous, and hence increases security of programs. * This requires some applications to be adapted to support multiple sockets. * The behaviour of the network stack with this value is the same as the default behaviour of FreeBSD. * This value reduces security bugs, but introduces new bugs since some applications no longer work as expected. * This value will flush out all applications that cannot handle an alternative setting of net.ipv6.bindv6only. * Setting this value now will get more bugs fixed before the next release. In the past maintainers have pushed for new ways for doing things that upset the status quo. The idea is that introducing new functionality, although it will break some existing functionality, will result in faster convergence to a better situation. Opponents will argue that new functionality should preferrably only be introduced when it will not break exisiting functionality. I hope the Committee will issue a statement whether the former is, in general, accepted behaviour, or if Debian should be more conservative. -- Met vriendelijke groet / with kind regards, Guus Sliepen g...@debian.org signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Bug#585725: git-cvs: package description should suggest cvs2svn for robust conversions
Package: git-cvs Version: 1:1.7.1-1 As the ISSUES section of the git-cvsimport man page explains, unless timestamps are strictly increasing, no file is cvs imported more than once, and no commits add files after a branch is made and before its first commit, git-cvsimport is likely to produce an incorrect result. See also http://bugs.debian.org/474185. Since this is quite relevant to someone considering whether to install the git-cvs package, it should probably be mentioned in the package description. Maybe something like this: Description: fast, scalable, distributed revision control system (cvs interoperability) This package provides the git cvsimport, cvsexportcommit, and cvsserver tools, which allow Git to read from and write to CVS repositories and provide CVS clients access to Git repositories. . The git-cvsimport tool can incrementally import from a repository that is being actively developed and it does not require access outside of the usual CVS protocol. Unfortunately, many repositories include features that would lead to an incorrect conversion; for reliable one-time imports, use the cvs2git (from the cvs2svn package) or parsecvs instead. Thoughts? Bug#585081: New Upstream Release - digikam 1.3.0
Hi Mark, is there any new information available on this topic? I've read the discussion at digikam-devel (http://mail.kde.org/pipermail/digikam-devel/2010- June/043704.html), but that one came to no end, I think. I don't know the structure of libs in Debian very well, but isn't it possible to build and deliver different applications with different library versions? As far as I see, libkexiv is used by Strigi, too. Maybe Gilles could tag the current trunk of libkexiv as a minor release. Current digikam (1.2.0) depends on exiv2 0.19, which contains a bug with Nikon DSLR-JPGs. This bug was filled on 2010-01-27 and closed with 0.20 (http://dev.exiv2.org/issues/show/677).
