Bug#589681: Regression with jetty init script
Hi, Am 20.07.2010 07:48, schrieb Michele Renda: Yes, the problem is that /var/log/jetty/jetty.log is created as user jetty, and if rotatelogs is launched as user root, it is unable to rotate this file. Bug#589703: trac-git: source package layout is weird
Source: trac-git Version: 0.0.20100513-2 I was looking through trac-git source to figure out how it runs git. Lots of packages needed to change between lenny and sid to use the “dashless” form when running git, so I was hoping to get a sense of when trac-git did that, so an appropriate Breaks: could be added to git. Bug#589689: transition to libjack-jackd2-0 breaks many packages

Yes, that is sort-of expected. I don't want to downgrade to jackd2. This doesn't make sense. I assume that you meant jackd1 here. After being forced to use it for a couple of months, I find it is much more reliable. Yes, that's why we want to ship it as default jackd flavor in squeeze. However, we discovered that squeeze is better off with both jackd1 and jackd2 versions, and have applications compiled against libjack0 from the jackd1 package. If I try to install jackd2 by hand, it forces me to uninstall jackd1 plus loads of packages, including mplayer, aqualung, alsaplayer, gstreamer-plugins, libpurple, pidgin, libxine, xine-ui, vdr plugins and many others. Those packages need to be rebuilt against the updated jackd1 package. The release team is already on it with scheduling binNMUs. Bug#589683: reportbug: spews useless information messages when spawing editor
retitle 589683 Kate needs a quiet option stop Hi, Fair enough... I'm so use to verbose KDE apps that I automatically put them in the background and redirect output when I start one from a command line--of course everyone else should do the same. :D I tried a couple other visual editors, xjed and xemacs, neither of them sent any output to the X-term. So, indeed, this is a problem with Kate which makes it rather less than suitable as a system's VISUAL editor. Note: although I use a local build of KDE3 (KDE4 eats up too many resources on this older box), and the Kate that comes with KDE4 is somewhat less verbose than the one from KDE3, it still spews out a lot of generally useless messages and doesn't appear to have a quiet option. - Bruce On July 19, 2010 11:25:19 pm Sandro Tosi wrote: reassign 589683 kate thanks Hello Bruce, this seems to me a bug (even if at wishlist severity) in kate: if you want them to stop print those lengthy messages, ask them :) I can't redirect all output from text editor to dev/null or so: there might be cases when having their output on screen is useful, without going to look in another place (or in no place at all, as in /d/null), but I understand the startup of kate is really verbose. Bug#589708: guilt: undeclared dependency on git ( 1:1.8)
Package: guilt Version: 0.33-1 Severity: serious Justification: policy §3.5 Tags: patch Hi Iulian, :) guilt has some code that in my opinion should be patched out in Debian: | case $gitver in | 1.5.*) ;; # git config | 1.6.*) ;; # git config | 1.7.*) ;; # git config | *) die Unsupported version of git ($gitver) ;; | esac The problem with this code is that it goes behind the package manager’s back and makes the code obsolete before it really should be. Because previous versions of guilt would error out when run with git 1.7.x, now git is going to need to Breaks: old versions of guilt. Which imposes a constraint during upgrades: guilt has to be deconfigured before git is upgraded. That’s even in cases like Bug#576937 where the only incompatibility between guilt and new git was that created by this check! Now _upstream_ such a check makes sense because some people are installing guilt without a package manager. So I think we should patch it out for Debian, and handle backward incompatibilities by adding Breaks: to git where necessary. However, that is not what this patch is about. This patch just gets dependencies correct for the current situation, where guilt is going to break itself once git 1.8 comes out... we might as well declare it. Thoughts welcome, as always. Heartbeat uses the init scripts to monitor the state of the system services and (correctly) freaks out when receiving return codes that indicate errors. Bug#589711: mailfront: Inconsistent documentation-behaviour about where qmail backend tries to find qmail-queue
Package: mailfront Version: 1.11-1 Severity: important This is an upstream bug, but it makes debian package to fail in some circumstances. /usr/share/doc/mailfront/backend-qmail.html states that qmail-queue location is expected where, first, $QMAILQUEUE says, or, second, as $QMAILHOME/bin/qmail-queue names, while previously say that $QMAILHOME defaults to /var/qmail. Bug#589724: ITP: geowebcache -- cache for WMS tiles
Package: wnpp Severity: wishlist Owner: David Paleino da...@debian.org * Package name: geowebcache Version : 1.2.2 Upstream Author : Arne Kepp, portions by Gabriel Roldan and Mikael Nyberg * URL : http://geowebcache.org/ * License : LGPL-3+ Programming Lang: Java Description : cache for WMS tiles Mapping clients, such as OpenLayers or GoogleMaps, render WMS (Web Map Service) tiles every time they are queried, which can result in unnecessary processing and increased waiting times. . GeoWebCache optimizes this experience by saving (caching) map tiles as they are requested, in effect acting as a proxy between client (such as OpenLayers or Google Maps) and server (such as GeoServer, or any WMS-compliant server). As new maps and tiles are requested, GeoWebCache intercepts these calls and returns pre-rendered tiles if stored, or calls the server to render new tiles as necessary. Thus, once tiles are stored, the speed of map rendering increases many times, making for a more seamless user experience. -- . ''`. On the other hand I do not know whether this is what you intend. This way update-rc.d does not touch startup links for fetch-crl-boot. So if a user messed them up, the update-rc.d will not fix it. I would not exclude the possibility of a bug in update-rc.d either. Maybe nobody tried to add a script that is only stopped but never started, but update-rc.d could be supporting the syntax you (or some dh script?) used. I therefore pulled in the sysvinit maintainers. Helmut -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Bug#589534: grub2: grub-mkconfig partition detection neither reliable nor intuitive
On 07/18/2010 04:56 PM, Josef Spillner (kuarepoti-dju.net) wrote: Package: grub2 Version: 1.98-1 Severity: normal *** Please type your report below this line *** My harddisk (sda) started to show bad blocks so I've installed another one (sdb) and cloned the system to it with dd_rescue. What happens now when I run update-grub or grub-mkconfig on the old system booted from sda, it sets root=sdb1 and generates the kernel list in grub.cfg from the ones available in sdb1's /boot menu for both the sda grub as well as the sdb grub. This is either great supercow intelligence to not use the kernels on the (still active) old hard disk anymore, or (more probably) a bug in grub2. It means that the mere existence of a new hard disk in the physical system, without even mounting it, changes grub2's behaviour, which is certainly not a good idea. In the file /usr/lib/grub/grub-mkconfig_lib, function prepare_grub_to_access_device(), only /dev/sdb1 is given as an argument, but not /dev/sda1. Both partitions contain their disk's system directories including /boot. I've added a DEVICE debug statement which shows up in the attached configuration file grub.cfg. I couldn't find information in the ultra-minimalistic manual pages for grub-install, update-grub, grub-mkconfig etc. what the desired behaviour is to compare it to the actual behaviour. In my view, the desired behaviour would be to include all kernels from all partitions grub2 works on and place the list into all grub2 installations. The latter part is currently working, the former is not. To summarise graphically, when running update-grub from the sda system we get: * in /dev/sda's boot menu: kernels on sdb1 + custom entries from sdb1 * in /dev/sdb's boot menu: kernels on sdb1 + custom entries from sdb1 Instead of: * in /dev/sda's boot menu: kernels on sda1 + sdb1 + custom entries from sda1 + sdb1 * in /dev/sdb's boot menu: kernels on sda1 + sdb1 + custom entries from sda1 + sdb1 There are few possible problems leading to this behaviour: 1) (Most likely) since Debian uses UUIDs and if you forgot to change UUIDs and update /etc/fstab for ne UUIDs you actually always load the system from sdb even when you think you load from sda. Following excerpt speak in favor of this hypothesis: *** BEGIN /proc/mounts /dev/disk/by-uuid/384493f8-0bc2-4e63-8ff1-cdce440b4279 / ext3 rw,relatime,errors=remount-ro,data=ordered 0 0 *** END /proc/mounts 2) Less likely: bug in grub-probe. After you're absolutely sure that sda1 and not sdb1 is mounted at / execute: sudo grub-probe -t device / and post the result. *** BEGIN /boot/grub/device.map (hd0) /dev/sda *** END /boot/grub/device.map *** BEGIN /boot/grub/grub.cfg # # DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE # # It is automatically generated by /usr/sbin/grub-mkconfig using templates # from /etc/grub.d and settings from /etc/default/grub # ### BEGIN /etc/grub.d/00_header ### if [ -s $prefix/grubenv ]; then load_env fi set default=0 if [ ${prev_saved_entry} ]; then set saved_entry=${prev_saved_entry} save_env saved_entry set prev_saved_entry= save_env prev_saved_entry set boot_once=true fi function savedefault { if [ -z ${boot_once} ]; then saved_entry=${chosen} save_env saved_entry fi } # DEVICE /dev/sdb1 insmod ext2 set root='(/dev/sdb,1)' search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set 384493f8-0bc2-4e63-8ff1-cdce440b4279 if loadfont /usr/share/grub/unicode.pf2 ; then set gfxmode=640x480 insmod gfxterm insmod vbe if terminal_output gfxterm ; then true ; else # For backward compatibility with versions of terminal.mod that don't # understand terminal_output terminal gfxterm fi fi # DEVICE /dev/sdb1 insmod ext2 set root='(/dev/sdb,1)' search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set 384493f8-0bc2-4e63-8ff1-cdce440b4279 set locale_dir=($root)/boot/grub/locale set lang=de insmod gettext set timeout=5 ### END /etc/grub.d/00_header ### ### BEGIN /etc/grub.d/05_debian_theme ### set menu_color_normal=cyan/blue set menu_color_highlight=white/blue ### END /etc/grub.d/05_debian_theme ### ### BEGIN /etc/grub.d/08_custom ### # This file provides an easy way to add custom menu entries. Bug#589730: perl-doc: perlunicode(1) man page suggests the :utf8 layer, which can be unsafe
Package: perl-doc Version: 5.10.1-13 Severity: important The perlunicode(1) man page gives bad information, which can lead to write unsafe code. It says: Input and Output Layers Perl knows when a filehandle uses Perl's internal Unicode encodings (UTF-8, or UTF-EBCDIC if in EBCDIC) if the filehandle is opened with the :utf8 layer. Other encodings can be converted to Perl's encoding on input or from Perl's encoding on output by use of the :encoding(...) layer. See open. It should warn against the usage of the :utf8 layer, and Other encodings is misleading as one may think that the UTF-8 encoding is not concerned by the :encoding(...) layer, while one should use :encoding(UTF-8) instead of :utf8. Bug#554790: This breaks device.map on upgrade
On 07/12/2010 12:38 PM, Colin Watson wrote: [Re-sending with full quoting and from my @ubuntu.com account so that it doesn't get stuck in the grub-devel moderation queue.] On Mon, Jul 12, 2010 at 12:26:21AM +0100, Colin Watson wrote: On Fri, Jul 09, 2010 at 08:01:12AM +0400, Vadim Solomin wrote: This fix, at least in its current form, has a potential to break grub for users having more than one drive, unless they are careful enough to check and fix their device.map after upgrade. Old mkdevicemaps assigned grub device numbers in the sort order of kernel device names, which was right more often than not. On the other hand, the sort order of (pretty much random) stable names, used by new version, is extremely unlikely to have any correlation to grub device order. Included is a rough patch which preserves the kernel-name order for grub devices when generating device.map. I like this idea; it seems that it ought to minimise the likelihood of upheaval due to the change in device.map generation. I agree that nothing is particularly guaranteed here but it would be nice to try to minimise the chances of problems, if only to try to reduce the number of people who find they need to ask for help on #grub ... Vladimir, would this patch need a copyright assignment? Most of it seems pretty straightforward; in fact I doubt that it would come out very much different if I'd written it from scratch. No need of copyright assignment for this patch. I've made a number of changes to this patch to fix up formatting and to behave a bit closer to the way I expect; in particular it's necessary to compare by -stable if comparing by -kernel returns zero, for the reasons previously explained in a comment.
