Sorry to keep posting. One more tidbit, if it helps:
I didn't realize that running the lspci w/o sudo would lock out reporting
on the capabilities of the VGA controller (where it says ""
in previous post). Here they are, from sudo:

I apologize for not personally trying hard to push this through, but
if we don't unblock 2.16.3 in the next few days, it makes the Stable
Release process more difficult since we can't "practice" with easier
webkit2gtk point releases first.

One more tidbit of info: The installer for Ubuntu (back on 16.04) worked
fine (which is what this laptop has installed, though it has by now been
upgraded to 17.04).
But I would prefer to re-install with Debian.
Here's the patch from upstream project.

Dear Maintainer,
The version proposed by Debian is not up to date, the latest version is 0.9.5.
Can you update the Debian packages?
Thank you.

Dear Maintainer,
libspice-client-glib-2.0-8 can run just fine without h264parse and thus

Dear maintainer,
this is a blatant violation of the Debian policy and such an RC bug.
I don't want to see stretch released with such a grave bug.
I'll NMU texlive to DELAYED/3 demoting the doc packages to suggests.
