Bug#667504: libav-tools: bus error on sparc encoding vp8

2012-04-04 Thread Jack Hill
Package: libav-tools
Version: 4:0.8.1-1
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

Using the avconv executable to encode a video with the vp8 codec (via libvpx)
fails with a bus error. This happens with both webm and mkv containers.
The error does not happen if a different codec is chosen (e.g. libtheora).

To reproduce:
0) get a video encoded in something other than vp8 (I used youtube-dl to get an
h.264 encoded video).
1) try to transcode it with
avconv -i infile.mp4 outfile.webm
(avconv automatically chooses libvpx for a .webm file)
2) observe failure.

I will appily provide more debuggin information if provided with instructions
for obtaining.

Bug#662806: apvlv: Startup.pdf has undefined cross references.

2012-03-06 Thread Jack Hill
Package: apvlv
Version: 0.1.1-1.1+b1
Severity: minor
Tags: upstream

Dear Maintainer,

The Startup.pdf file that is included with apvlv appears to have only
been compiled with pdflatex once (from the source file Startup.tex) as
on page 2 there are multiple references to sections that appear as
“Section ??” instead of the expected “Section 2”. Running pdflatex twice
on Startup.tex resolves the problem as then pdflatex is able to pick up
the cross referencing information. Both files are in the root of the
source tree. The buggy Startup.pdf is also present in the source
distribution for version 0.1.2. I was unable to check version 0.1.4 as I
was unable to download it.

Suggested fix: compile Startup.tex twice with pdflatex during the build
process. Upstream should either provide a correct Startup.pdf, or stop
including the results of compilation action in the source distribution.

Bug#645674: cmake and pkgconfig files

2011-10-21 Thread Black Jack
I hope you didn't just put FindHiredis.cmake into
/usr/share/cmake/hiredis/hiredis-config.cmake because it will not
work.
I wrote a simple working config for hiredis.
These files have some variables that shall differ from build to build
(for example, package version), maybe some generator should be
written?

Bug#645674: cmake and pkgconfig files

2011-10-17 Thread Black Jack
Package: libhiredis-dev
Version: 0.10.1-2

There are no cmake module for this package, so I decided to write one.
Also, I think that placing pkgconfig .pc file with prefix lib is
incorrect - there are no packages doing that except libxml2.
Additionally every pkgconfig module has header containing something like

prefix=/usr
exec_prefix=${prefix}
libdir=${exec_prefix}/lib
includedir=${prefix}/include

but libhiredis.pc has every variable hardcoded - /usr/lib, /usr/include etc.

So I also attach a fixed hiredis.pc.
p.s. As far as I know, cmake-modules are placed in
/usr/share/cmake-{cmake-version}/Modules, and cmake-version is
different from release to release. Now it's 2.8

Bug#643816: python2.7: linked against ncurses instead of ncursesw

2011-09-29 Thread Jack Miller
Package: python2.7
Version: 2.7.2-5
Severity: normal

The current release of python 2.7 is linked improperly against
libncurses instead of the wide-char capable version libncursesw like
python 2.6 is. This makes it much more difficult to work with unicode in
Python with curses.

A simple rebuild with libncursesw should fix the issue.

For reference:

$ ldd /usr/lib/python2.6/lib-dynload/_curses.so
...
libncursesw.so.5 = /lib/libncursesw.so.5 (0x7f6f1016f000)

$ ldd /usr/lib/python2.7/lib-dynload/_curses.so
...
libncurses.so.5 = /lib/libncurses.so.5 (0x7fa300c4b000)
...

Bug#631295: gvfs-backends: gvfsd-gphoto2 handles large image/video files very badly

2011-06-22 Thread Jack Whitham
Package: gvfs-backends
Version: 1.6.4-3
Severity: important
Tags: upstream

This bug can be reproduced by
1. recording a large video file (1000Mb+) using a digital camera,
2. attaching that camera to the PC,
3. open the camera folder that appears on the desktop, then
find the video file using the File Browser (nautilus),
4. copy the file onto the desktop by drag and drop.

The symptoms are as follows:
1. The entire file is copied into memory before being written to
$HOME/Desktop, potentially causing a swap storm or even crashing the PC.
Using top you can observe the size of the gvfsd-gphoto2 process
increasing during the copy operation.
2. The file is apparently downloaded from the camera more than once.
3. The copy progress bar appears, but sits at 0% for some time.

I have investigated the first symptom and traced it to code in
gvfsbackendgphoto2.c within the gvfs-1.6.4 source package.
The function do_open_for_read_real is responsible for copying each
file from the camera, which is done using code in libgphoto2.

The gp_file_new function is used to allocate a CameraFile object
to temporarily store the data. Unfortunately, gp_file_new stores the
data entirely in memory: fine for images of a few megabytes, but entirely
unsuitable for gigabyte-sized video files.

An examination of the command line tool gphoto2, which also uses
libgphoto2, suggests that gp_file_new_from_fd would be a more
appropriate choice. When gp_file_new_from_fd is used instead,
the memory usage of gvfsd-gphoto2 remains reasonable.

However, this fix just reveals the second problem, namely that each
file will be downloaded more than once -- before the progress
bar even begins to move. Again, this is not noticeable for small
files, but it is a major annoyance for large copies. Furthermore,
large copies may never complete, as the operation appears to time out.

If the problem were limited to the first symptom, namely the apparent
misuse of gp_file_new, then I could easily suggest a patch. But it
appears that there is a deeper design problem, namely that:
1. A file is apparently downloaded from the camera more than once.
2. The copy progress bar appears, but sits at 0% for some time, whilst
those copies complete.

Further information:
1. The latest upstream version of gvfsbackendgphoto2.c also uses
gp_file_new.
2. To my knowledge the bug is not open within Debian, but it has
apparently been reported in Ubuntu (note same symptoms):

Bug#390793: Patch for genisoimage to resolve 390793

2011-06-19 Thread Jack Whitham
This bug is pretty annoying. Portable/in car/standalone MP3 CD players
can't read the Rock Ridge data and rely on Joliet data only, so it
is very important to get the Joliet data right.

This is a long-standing bug, which has probably been in mkisofs for a
decade and has clearly been inherited by genisoimage. It has annoyed me
on numerous occasions; far too many album tracks have been skipped
as a result of exceeding the 64 byte limit. I have had enough.

I attach a patch to fix it. The patch detects filenames that exceed
the 64 byte limit and truncates the body of the filename only,
rather than the body plus the extension. Rock Ridge data is unaffected.

Bug#621626: balsa: Impossible to use mouse to paste additional text into To: address

I have had similar problems pasting with middle mouse button, not just
in the TO: field, but even in the body of the message. However, when I
remember to check, it seems that the paste does work, but the original
copy did not. If I go back and select what I want to copy, and
explicitly hit Ctl-C, I can then paste with middle mouse click.

(Since this report did get copied to the balsa mailing list, it seems
OK, but I would think filing the bug at bugzilla.gnome.org would be
closer to the balsa developers.)

Could you try the version that's available in Debian experimental? You'll
need to upload all the OpenAFS packages, including openafs-client, since
the interface between userspace and the kernel isn't compatible with 1.4.

Unfortunately it doesn't seem to be fixed for ppc64

Hi, to address bug 615227 in squeeze, would you consider accepting an
updated package with just these changes?
http://nottheoilrig.com/debian/201103110/patch

 - or do you have any other feedback for me, what is the best thing to
do?

Thank you Rik Theys for reporting this bug, finding the upstream patch,
testing it, and helping update the packaging!

Bug#614029: pbuilder: Hard to avoid debootstrap failure, Release signed by unknown key (key id AED4B06F473041FA)

2011-02-18 Thread Jack Bates
Package: pbuilder
Version: 0.199+nmu1
Severity: wishlist

My situation is that I'm trying to build some packages for Debian unstable, on
an Ubuntu system, using cowbuilder

To create base.cow image, I first tried,

$ sudo cowbuilder --create --distribution unstable --mirror
http://mirrors.kernel.org/debian/
 [...]
E: Release signed by unknown key (key id AED4B06F473041FA)

Guessing that I was missing the debian-archive-keyring package, I installed it
and tried again, with same result. I double checked that the
debian-archive-keyring package includes key id AED4B06F473041FA

By studying the debootstrap manpage I learned that, By default, Release file
signatures are not checked. I used the cowbuilder --debug option to find the
--keyring option passed to debootstrap, and configured in
/usr/share/pbuilder/pbuilderrc

Next I tried to omit the debootstrap --keyring option using the cowbuilder
--debootstrapopts option, without success - it's apparently appended to value
from /usr/share/pbuilder/pbuilderrc, in pbuilder-checkparams

Next I tried to omit the debootstrap --keyring option using a ~/.pbuilderrc
file,

 DEBOOTSTRAPOPTS=--variant=buildd

This failed because sudo resets the environment ($HOME),

 W: /root/.pbuilderrc does not exist

Next I tried,

$ sudo sh -c HOME=$HOME cowbuilder --create --distribution unstable --mirror
http://mirrors.kernel.org/debian/;
 [...]
E: Release signed by unknown key (key id AED4B06F473041FA)

This failed to omit the --keyring option. My bash knowledge isn't strong -
maybe it's possible to have two variables with same name, one a scalar and one
a list? I tried,

 DEBOOTSTRAP=(--variant=buildd)

This worked! It omitted the --keyring option and the base.cow image built
successfully. However it's prohibitively difficult to figure out

If the --debootstrapopts option overrode DEBOOTSTRAPOPTS in
/usr/share/pbuilder/pbuilderrc, then it would be little easier to figure out.
If installing debian-archive-keyring was all that was required, I'd be done
after my first guess - maybe debootstrap could look in both keyrings? or in
some merged keyring? I dunno...

As I write this I found Ubuntu bug,
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pbuilder/+bug/599695. Unfortunately I
didn't check the Ubuntu bug tracker before trying to debug my issue - I did
check the Debian bug tracker but didn't find my issue mentioned

Bug#568585:

2010-11-06 Thread Jack Hill
Any update on this? I'm willing to help with any remaining work, but
am not sure what needs to be done (what does committed in git mean.
What further polishing needs to be done). It looks like the upstream
sources have Debian packaging information. Does this need to be
cleaned up in any way? It looks like it bundles ixp which currently is
a separate package so this would need to be split out.

Thanks

It doesn't, but it doesn't do any harm either. The loop has been
 rewritten in mainline.

Agreed, it causes no problems, but it seems like it was intended to be
the dmi init, i.e.

for (i = 0, dmi = dev-mc_list; ...

I suppose it doesn't really matter but either removing the dmi in the
for loop or moving the dmi init in there would make more sense to me.

I really should learn to explain myself fully. Sorry for taking up
your time.

Bug#594233: jesred: Does not work with squid 2.7 STABLE3

2010-08-24 Thread Jack Andrews
Package: jesred
Version: 1.2pl1-16
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

I installed default versions of squid and jesred using aptitude.

With default configuration (except for using squid in transparent mode),
redirect.log reports:
Request: http://google.com 192.168.0.2/- - GET - myip=** myport=3128
method not GET

I believe jesred is not parsing the information provided by squid correctly.
It is thus not redirecting and requests.

Thanks,

Jack

After stripping out autotools noise and documentation changes, the

upstream tracker indicates that the fix required for the bug is three
 lines long -
 http://issues.outoforder.cc/file_download.php?file_id=33type=bug ; I'd be
happy to accept a stable update containing just that fix.

Thanks Adam,

I applied the patch to the package currently in stable (0.5.1-1) and
added a debian/changelog entry, mod-gnutls (0.5.1-2) stable; urgency=low

http://www.sfu.ca/~jdbates/debian/pool/mod-gnutls/

The package has no more recent changelog entries, e.g. from the packages
in testing/unstable - similarly I won't include this changelog entry in
the next upload to testing/unstable?

Here's a diff between this package and the package currently in stable,

Now I think I simply ask my Debian sponsor to upload this package

This is the first time I will upload to stable - please let me know if

the package versions in testing and unstable, but leave open for the

Bug#577476: Bug #577476: Additional information

2010-04-18 Thread Jack Whiskey
Updating to 2.6.32-4-686 fixed the problem. The device has now been detected
and discs are auto-mounted by the Gnome desktop system.

Two notes:

When installing the new kernel, aptitude gave 7 instances of the following
error:

debconf: Unknown template field '_description', in stanzaX of \
 /var/lib/dpkg/info/linux-image-2.6.32-4-686.templates

It looks as though the '_' was inserted to prevent the actions from being run.

The change in the device naming system didn't cause me any problems,
but coding in a warning of the change might be warranted.

Thanks.

I wouldn't expect any of these to make a change.

Please try linux-image-2.6.32-4-686, version 2.6.32-11, which is
currently in unstable. This has new drivers for most IDE controllers,
which may well fix this problem.

I am using Debian Lenny and just want to see how stable squeeze is now.
First i tried an aptitude dist-upgrade on my old squeeze installation.
It downloads and installed about 950 packages and after reboot it doesn'n

 anymore. :-(

I thought O.K. - it is time to begin with a fresh installation. :-)
So i downloaded the first CD of the weekly build and installed it.
I only used the first CD and then commented the CD out in the sources.list.
Everything is now working with internet connection.

Gnome started perfect but nautilus cannot be configured (Bug#559708).
There was also a problem with reportbug (Bug#559711).
Then i tried to install KDE without success.

 First i tried a aptitude install kde-standard.
This hangs after starting to configure.

Today i tried again to install with aptitude install kde-full
 I attached the output.

So what i must do now to get a running Debian with KDE 4?
 Install Kubuntu?

Bug#558826: [Kmymoney2-developer] Bug#558826: kmymoney2 on x86_64 can not read gpg encrypoted file created on i386 system

2009-11-30 Thread Jack

Hello,

Have you tried various combinations of running gpg on both machines?
For example, encrypt the same file on both machines and see if the
resulting file is the same. If it is not the same, then that would be
a gpg problem. If the results are identical, then decrypt that file on
both machines. If there is a strange gpg problem, that might help find
it wihtout involving KMM.

Hello,

Thank you very much for your response.

Yes, this is the strange thing in the story.
I'm mounting the same home dir from the same 32bit server running
same lenny

distro with 32bit debian there is no issue.

The file I have created in 2006 is encrypted with a key that is valid
and
signed. IT is however not default, but both kmymoney32/64 read the
same

config file in my home dir ... I don't have any idea.

The really strange thing is that it is not asking for gpg password,
so it
might be some link to gpg is missing somewhere, as I've installed the
hole
system from scratch, but this is definitely not a user (home-dir)
issue.
I still did not have time to check which packages I want to migrate
from my
32bit installation, so I don't know if I'm not missing some library,
but all

dependencies are solved, so I guess not.

I could compare the system files on both 32 (I've been using before)
and 64bit

(I'm using now).

I've just compiled kmymoney2-1.0.2 but it's trying to install a
sqlite plugin
in qt in /usr where I don't want to have it, so may be I'll try
tomorrow

installing into a test env, because it got alaready too late.

How can I help you debugging this, or where should I look at?

regards

E.

Bug#557976: no space error in nautilus when using afuse and sshfs

2009-11-25 Thread Jack Douglas
Package: afuse
Version: 0.2-3
Severity: normal

When I mount a remote sshfs filesystem all works well (even giving the
correct availible space when client and server are Lenny). However,
when I do the same mount using afuse, nautilus reports that
there is no space free and does not allow new files to be created (you
can still do so from the command line and 'df' still reports free
space correctly)

Bug#556164: Missing bind mount

2009-11-23 Thread Jack Bates
hmm - i think one will get this error,

[...]
rm: cannot remove `/var/cache/pbuilder/base.cow/proc/32334/sessionid':
Permission denied
rm: cannot remove `/var/cache/pbuilder/base.cow/proc/32334/coredump_filter':
Permission denied
rm: cannot remove `/var/cache/pbuilder/base.cow/proc/32334/io': Permission

Could not remove original tree

- whenever one calls cowbuilder with a --bindmounts option that doesn't
exist

i thought this was maybe a logic problem with cowbuilder - missing a
cleanup step when a bindmount doesn't exist, or something - but i
haven't looked closely at all

maybe this is the expected cowbuilder behaviour when a bindmount doesn't
exist?

Bug#539255: packagesearch: No messages given on install or update errors

2009-09-10 Thread Jack Pelrin
Hi

My /bin/sh points to dash, and it looks like you're on to something.

After seeing your request for the name of my system shell, I went ahead and
changed it on my system to point to bash.

Then I again edited my sources.list to corrupt it so that an error would be
thrown when 'apt-get update' was run.

After this, launching packagesearch and opting to 'Update Apt Package
Database caused an xterm window to open which prompted for a password, and
then reported the 'apt-get update' failure and then prompted Press enter to
continue and waited for input.

Changing /bin/sh to once again point to dash and repeating the above caused
the behavior described in the original report- the xterm window closes
before the error message can be read with no prompt to Press enter to
continue.

Regards
Jack

the xterm window did stay open showing the connection errors after the

  ctrlc out of it.

The behavior I refer to in this bug report concerns running an
'apt-get update' with a corrupted sources.list (specifically, adding
a random letter to the front of http in a mirror address). In this
case, the behavior I reported occurred where the 'apt-get update'
running in the xterm window returned an error but the window closed at
the termination of the 'apt-get update' before an error message could

Obviously the 'apt-get update' error I introduced presents an unusual

Bug#539255: packagesearch: No messages given on install or update errors

2009-08-02 Thread Jack Pelrin
HI

The situation I am reporting on stems from trying to install the package
kaddressbook, which is out of sync with libgnokii4 as currently
situated
on two different installs I have exhibiting the same behavior.

The output when trying to install from a terminal is as follows:

r...@milky3:[/home/jack] # apt-get install kaddressbook
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
kaddressbook: Depends: libgnokii4 but it is not going to be installed
E: Broken packages

But when trying to install using packagesearch, the xterm window closes on
the exit of the command, not showing a Press enter to close the terminal
emulator prompt.

To answer your question about what happens if I run an 'apt-get update' in
packagesearch without a network connection, in that case the xterm window
did stay open showing the connection errors after the update finished trying
to run. It didn't prompt to continue. I had to ctrlc out of it.

The behavior I refer to in this bug report concerns running an 'apt-get
update' with a corrupted sources.list (specifically, adding a random
letter to the front of http in a mirror address). In this case, the
behavior I reported occurred where the 'apt-get update' running in the xterm
window returned an error but the window closed at the termination of the
'apt-get update' before an error message could be read.

Obviously the 'apt-get update' error I introduced presents an unusual
system situation, I just thought it might be germain in debugging the
problem.

Thanks
Jack

Bug#538788: jruby1.2 does not run with gcj-jre

2009-07-26 Thread Jack Hill
Package: jruby1.2
Version: 1.2.0-3
Severity: normal

jruby1.2 depends on default-jre which can be provided either by gnu java
compiler (gcj) or a sun derived java implementation (sun-java6 or sun-java5 or
openjdk-6). When trying to run jruby when only the gcj-jre is installed I get
the following error:

Fatal: GCJ (GNU Compiler for Java) is not supported by JRuby.

jruby runs as expected when I install one of the sun derived implementations.

My suggested fix is to have jruby1.2 depend specifically on one of the sun
derived java implementations instead of default-jre.

Bug#468325: ITP - Urban Terror -- Quake 3 based first person shooter

2009-07-04 Thread Jack Coulter
Hi,

The legal issue was resolved to the best of my knowledge, the blocker now is
filesize of the urbanterror-data package, I believe there were plans to create
a data.debian.org repository for large packages of static, arch-independent
data, but I'm not sure if it was implemented yet. When its implmented the
package can probably be uploaded after a few minor tweaks, as I haven't touched
it for a long time now and there may be some issues in the current one
(bashism, etc)

Regards,
Jack Coulter

This is a wishlist. I found dolphin completely unusable because of only
 one missing option.

I prefer to do my file browsing old MacOS-style, one window per folder,
where opening a folder opens a new window.
Konqueror has an configuration option which allows it to work this way.
  Dolphin doesn't, making it completely
nonfunctional as a file browser for me. I'm just glad Konqueror is still

the wave of the future, I hope this gross oversight, which should be pretty

Bug#530996: gthumb: overwrite dialog should suggest new name

2009-05-28 Thread Jack T Mudge III
Subject: gthumb: overwrite dialog should suggest new name
Package: gthumb
Version: 3:2.10.11-1
Severity: wishlist
Tags: patch

*** Please type your report below this line ***
When moving images around, if you happen to have two files of the same name, an
overwrite dialog appears. One of the options is to rename the new file; the
text box presents the original file name and allows you to edit that.

I find it's more useful if the textbox instead presents you with a suggested
alternate name, the way Konqueror's overwrite dialog does, so that you can
just select that radio box and click OK, rather than having to type into the
box (and keep track of how many similarly-named images you're trying to move).

I've included a patch that adds this functionality. If you have Picture.jpg,
the name Picture_1.jpg will be suggested. If that isn't available, then
Picture_2.jpg will be suggested, and so on.

Bug#482815: signature unnecessary

2009-03-26 Thread Jack Miller
I got really confused by this message as well, and ended up putting the .bin
file packaged with the official tarball in the /usr/share/hibernate
directory. That made the message go away, but didn't make resume work.

The key thing for me was that `hibernate-disk` doesn't work for TuxOnIce, you
have to just use `hibernate` as the disk.conf appears to bypass suspend2/TOI.
Now suspend/resume works without a binary sig file.

Thanks Kurt, on further investigation I realize that the ntpdate package

blank ntp.conf file I observe is a symptom of bug #397648, which has

Awesome, thanks for this response Dann : )

What do I think... My intuition tells me that it will be cleaner to use
one client instance throughout the script, but I do not have a strong

Also I notice that client is already a global variable, and simply

Here is an updated patch which drops the extra calls:

Bug#515702: ntpdate: no servers can be used with default configuration

2009-02-16 Thread Jack Bates
Package: ntpdate
Version: 1:4.2.4p4+dfsg-8
Severity: normal

The default configuration shipped with ntpdate is NTPDATE_USE_NTP_CONF=yes, but
a blank /etc/ntp.conf file. ntpdate does not depend on the ntp package, which
distributes a non-blank /etc/ntp.conf

The ntpdate-debian script works great after manually setting
NTPDATE_USE_NTP_CONF=no, or creating a /etc/ntp.conf. However if ntpdate-debian
is run without manual reconfiguration, using just the defaults, it results in
no servers can be used, exiting

Would it not be better to distribute the default ntpdate configuration with
NTPDATE_USE_NTP_CONF=no, or distribute a working ntp.conf? so ntpdate-debian
works even without manual reconfiguration?

Bug#514005: mod_gnutls: HTTPS server variable set incorrectly for mod_rewrite's RewriteCond

2009-02-10 Thread Jack Bates
Sander Marechal reports that mod_rewrite does not find the value on in
the %{HTTPS} server variable when HTTPS is enabled with mod_gnutls:
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=514005

I confirmed that this behavior still exists in mod_gnutls trunk revision
404. I used this RewriteRule to copy the %{HTTPS} server variable to an
environment variable:

RewriteRule . - [E=FOO:%{HTTPS}]

Here is my httpd.conf:
http://cgi.sfu.ca/~jdbates/tmp/mod-gnutls/200902070/httpd.conf

Then I used this CGI to echo the environment variables:
http://cgi.sfu.ca/~jdbates/tmp/mod-gnutls/200902070/index.cgi

I used wget to get the output of this CGI:

$ wget https://localhost:8080/index.cgi --no-check-certificate

- here it is: http://cgi.sfu.ca/~jdbates/tmp/mod-gnutls/200902070/wget

Notice that while the value of the HTTPS environment variable is on,
the value of the FOO environment variable (which is where I copied the
value of the %{HTTPS} server variable with mod_rewrite) is off

mod_gnutls does not set the HTTPS server variable correctly for mod_rewrite.
 Note that this
appears to be a different variable than the HTTPS environment variable.

I have mod_gnutls loaded on my server and I have a simple rewrite rule to
 redirect HTTPS POST calls
on my non-SSL protected site to my SSL protected site, like so:

   RewriteEngine On
   RewriteCond %{REQUEST_METHOD} ^POST$
   RewriteCond %{HTTPS} ^off$
   RewriteRule ^xmlrpc(.*)$ https://%{SERVER_NAME}%{REQUEST_URI} [R,L,QSA]

Here is the output of ModRewrite with RewriteLogLevel 5. Note that the
 contents of %{HTTPS}
is off. Apparently mod_gnutls does not set this variable.

Bug#511452: Same problem with brand new disks

2009-02-03 Thread Jack Douglas
I've just retried my install (see bug 507653 merged with this one) on
a set of brand new disks, expecting to have no problem, but to my
surprise at the same point I get the same error message:

The kernel was unable to re-read the partition table on /dev/md0
(Invalid argument).
This means Linux won't know anything about the modifications you made
until you reboot. You should reboot your computer before doing
anything with /dev/md0.

and

The kernel was unable to re-read the partition table on /dev/md1
(Invalid argument).
This means Linux won't know anything about the modifications you made
until you reboot. You should reboot your computer before doing
anything with /dev/md1.

so either there really are two bugs or this is not really a problem
with reusing disks with old RAID and swap partitions on them.

Bug#498523: This bug should be ranked Serious or Grave and Release Critical

2009-01-27 Thread Jack Dodds
I respectfully suggest that this bug should be ranked Serious or Grave.

Because of this bug, it is possible to unknowingly send GPG-signed
emails which are garbled. That defeats the entire purpose of
GPG-signing. That is definitely a serious bug.

I have found that the garbling sometimes takes the form of omitting the
first paragraph of a plain text email. That could completely change the
meaning of the email. In
http://release.debian.org/lenny/rc_policy.txt, the criteria for a
grave bug include causes data loss. When the first paragraph is
omitted from an email, that is data loss.

My thanks to the maintainers for a really neat piece of software.

Bug#134661: Fw: util-linux patch - add option to whereis

2009-01-11 Thread Jack Grahl
Apologies, I sent this to the package maintainer's email address instead of to

Subject: util-linux patch - add option to whereis

 Dear LaMont,

 I hope you are well.

The below suggested patch to files in the 'lenny' util-linux package source
directory adds a useful piece of functionality to the 'whereis' utility. It
 adds
an option '-q' (for quiet) to whereis which removes the initial name of
 package
from each output line. So the output with and without the -q option is shown:

 m...@sonja-debian:~/c/util-linux-2.13.1.1$ whereis gunzip
 gunzip: /bin/gunzip /usr/share/man/man1/gunzip.1.gz
 m...@sonja-debian:~/c/util-linux-2.13.1.1$ whereis -q gunzip
 /bin/gunzip /usr/share/man/man1/gunzip.1.gz

This allows the output of 'whereis' to be more easily used in backtick
substitution, for example in the command lines of 'ls' 'file', etc.

 m...@sonja-debian:~/c/util-linux-2.13.1.1$ file `whereis -b gunzip`
gunzip:: ERROR: cannot open `gunzip:' (No such file or directory)
/bin/gunzip: POSIX shell script text executable
 m...@sonja-debian:~/c/util-linux-2.13.1.1$ file `whereis -bq gunzip`
/bin/gunzip: POSIX shell script text executable

I hope that you find the patch acceptable to be applied to the Debian package
sources. I have checked that the patch works against the 'etch' package
 version
2.12r, based on the changelog it should also work for the most recent
 version.
If there are any changes which you like me to make before accepting the
 patch,
 please let me know.

I am not sure if there is an upstream maintainer for this file, it seems that
this source code is from BSD UNIX. If you are aware of any maintainer I would
 be
 happy to contact them.

 Best wishes,
 Jack Grahl

Bug#511522: general: Man pages should say what package a program belongs to

2009-01-11 Thread Jack Grahl
Package: general
Severity: wishlist

If some program belongs to a package which does not have the same name
as the program, the man page for that command should say which package
the program is part of.
This is not the case in, for instance, coreutils or util-linux.
This information is needed, even for packages that are always installed
as part of the base distribution, since to get source code for a program
in coreutils one needs to know that it is part of that package.

http://xorg.freedesktop.org/archive/individual/driver/xf86-video-intel-2.5.99.1.tar.bz2
$ sudo apt-get build-dep xserver-xorg-intel -t experimental
$ tar -xjvf xf86-video-intel-2.5.99.1.tar.bz2
$ cd xf86-video-intel-2.5.99.1
$ ./configure --prefix=/usr
$ make
$ sudo make install

Restarted X and everything was working just fine.
Hope this helps.

Bug#511044: clean-patched depends on configure-stamp

2009-01-06 Thread Jack Bates
Package: cyrus-imapd-2.2
Version: 2.2.13
Severity: minor

I encountered this error when trying to build the cyrus-imapd-2.2 package with
pbuilder:

checking sasl/sasl.h usability... no
checking sasl/sasl.h presence... no
checking for sasl/sasl.h... no
configure: error: Cannot continue without libsasl2.
Get it from ftp://ftp.andrew.cmu.edu/pub/cyrus-mail/.
make: *** [configure-stamp] Error 1
dpkg-buildpackage: failure: fakeroot debian/rules clean gave error exit status 2

I think this is because pbuilder runs the debian/rules clean target outside of
the build root, but the build dependencies are not satisfied outside of the
build root. With many packages, I do not encounter this error because the
debian/rules clean target does not depend on (most of) the build dependencies.

I dropped the debian/rules clean-patched dependency on configure-stamp and
built the package successfully. I wonder if this dependency is really
necessary? If it could be safely dropped, then building the package with
pbuilder would be more convenient...

and then start gdm again with

/etc/init.d/gdm start

However, this does not appear to be a very reliable or safe method. A
number of times after restarting this way, the gdm start gave me a
different gdmgreeter on one or more VTs. Normally the Debian gdmgreeter
screen is displayed. The other screen which is displayed at random
appeared to be perhaps a generic Gnome gdmgreeter.

The remote ssh connection is essential because after shutting down gdm,
the console does not return to text mode. More precisely, the keyboard
seems to be connected to VT1, but the display is not. If you are very
careful, you can log in and run a command but the screen does not show it=

Processes 3235 and 3240 which are gdm and X on the second seat, are still
running, and in fact the screen that is showing them is not affected by the
restart.

I have found that it is impossible to do a clean restart since if any of
of the processes is killed, gdm automatically restarts it - so you can never
start over in the state where no X servers are running. This ia real
problem since the only way to fully test the configuration files is to
reboot (gross!)

Here's a piece of gdm.conf showing how the system is set up:

[servers]
# VT7 Layout Seat2
0=First
# VT7 Layout Seat1
1=Second

# Also note, that if you redefine a [server-foo] section, then GDM will
# use the definition in this file, not the GDM System Defaults configuration
# file. It is currently not possible to disable a [server-foo] section
# defined in the GDM System Defaults configuration file.

command=/usr/X11R6/bin/X2 -audit 0 -novtswitch -sharevts -layout Seat2

[server-Second]

command=/usr/X11R6/bin/X1 -audit 0 -layout Seat1
