This seems fixed - at least it doesn't happen for me anymore.
I mainly suspect installing a few themes along with a themes engine for
GTK apps on KDE and explicitely configuring a theme helped.

My Athlon XP doesn't have SSE2 support, but the configure script detects
that it does.
Same here.
Using --with-sse2=no gives normal operation after a standard compile.

somehow use GNUMEDDIR which they do not.
That's only used to access gnumed.py, nothing else.
gnumed(.sh) is there exactly to *be* a shell wrapper around
gnumed.py to allow the user to run additional shell scripts
before launching GNUmed. It doesn't make any sense to
convert it to Python.
