Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that
the package is simply not installable and a bug report against
that package should be filed.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:

Bug#341397: broken diversion: cursor.pcf.gz-artwiz vs. artwiz-cursor.pcf.gz

2005-11-30 Thread Michael Prokop
Package: artwiz-cursor
Severity: important

# dpkg -L artwiz-cursor | grep cursor.pcf
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc/artwiz-cursor.pcf.gz

# dpkg-divert --list | grep artwiz
diversion of /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc/cursor.pcf.gz to
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc/cursor.pcf.gz-artwiz by artwiz-cursor

AFAICS the diversion (generated in preinst) affects a file which is not
present:

# ls -l /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc/cursor.pcf.gz-artwiz
ls: /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc/cursor.pcf.gz-artwiz: No such file or
directory

But because of the filename cursor.pcf.gz-artwiz the generated fonts.dir
entry in directory /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc seems to cause problems
with the font directory (see #326253 for example):

I'm not sure about the severity of this problem, but as it seems to

Bug#345101: /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base uses modprobe instead of /sbin/modprobe

2005-12-28 Thread Michael Prokop
Package: alsa-base
Version: 1.0.10-3
Severity: normal

In /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base there are lines like:

install snd modprobe --ignore-install snd { modprobe --quiet snd-ioctl32 ; :
; }

Using this with /bin/zsh as /bin/sh fails (e.g. when running
udevsynthesize you see something like 'zsh: command not found:
modprobe' in syslog when running udev with log_priority=debug).

Changing all the 'modprobe' calls to '/sbin/modprobe' fixes the
problem. (I've tested this with /bin/bash as /bin/sh - works as well
of course then.)

All other files in /etc/modprobe.d/ seem to use '/sbin/modprobe' and
not 'modprobe'. If there is no specific reason why 'modprobe' is used
instead of '/sbin/modprobe' in alsa-base please consider changing this
as it fixes a very annoying (and not-easy-to-debug) problem with zsh.

Bug#338797: /etc/init.d/tor uses non-posix ulimit command

2005-11-12 Thread Michael Prokop
Package: tor
Version: 0.1.0.15-1.0.1
Severity: normal

Last line in /etc/default/tor:

ulimit -c unlimited

The file is included in script /etc/init.d/tor which uses '#!/bin/sh' as
shebang line. Line 72 in /etc/init.d/tor contains another ulimit
command.

[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~ % bash -c 'ulimit -c unlimited ; echo foo'
foo
[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~ % zsh -c 'ulimit -c unlimited ; echo foo'
foo
[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~ % sh -c 'ulimit -c unlimited ; echo foo'
zsh: command not found: ulimit
foo
[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~ %

So using zsh as /bin/sh results in:
# /etc/init.d/tor start
/etc/default/tor:45: command not found: ulimit

AFAICS this ulimit command is not part of IEEE Std 1003.1:
http://www.opengroup.org/onlinepubs/009695399/utilities/ulimit.html

Using #!/bin/bash in the shebang-line fixes the problem.

Bug#340058: running debootstrap with zsh fails: function repeat is shell reserved word

2005-11-20 Thread Michael Prokop
Package: debootstrap
Version: 0.3.1.7
Severity: important

The function 'repeat' in /usr/lib/debootstrap/functions causes a problem
if /bin/sh is not linked to bash but zsh:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~ % debootstrap
/usr/lib/debootstrap/functions:951: parse error near `()'
I: usage: [OPTION]... suite target [mirror [script]]
I: Try `debootstrap --help' for more information.
E: You must specify a suite and a target.

, [ a short demonstration ]
| % cat ./test_repeat
| function repeat () {
| echo $*
| }
| repeat foobar
|
| % zsh
| % ./test_repeat foobar
| ./test_repeat:6: parse error near `\n'
| % zsh ./test_repeat
| %
| % sh ./test_repeat foobar
| ./test_repeat:6: parse error near `\n'
| % which sh
| /bin/sh
| % ls -l /bin/sh
| lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 8 2005-11-20 17:50 /bin/sh - /bin/zsh
| % bash ./test_repeat foobar
| foobar
| %
`

AFAICS the problem is that 'repeat' is a shell reserved word in zsh:

% zsh -c 'which repeat'
repeat: shell reserved word

while it's not in bash:

% bash -c 'type repeat'
bash: line 0: type: repeat: not found

A fix would be either to use /bin/bash in the shebang line of
debootstrap (this is my current fix) or to rename function 'repeat' to
something different.

Bug#387613: linux-uvc-source: building package against non-running kernel fails

2006-09-15 Thread Michael Prokop
Package: linux-uvc-source
Version: 0.1.0-4
Severity: important

Running something like:

module-assistant -f -l '2.6.17-grml' -k \
/path/to/my/linux-2.6.17-grml build linux-uvc

fails with:

Building USB Video Class driver...
/bin/sh: line 0: cd: /lib/modules/2.6.16-grml/build: No such file or directory
[...]

because you are setting $KERNELRELEASE and $KERNELPATH in
debian/rules whereas this isn't used anywhere outside of
debian/rules. So building the package works only for the currently
running kernel (2.6.16-grml in my case). Makefile of usptream uses
$KERNEL_VERSION and $KERNEL_DIR.

AFAIK python2.3 is outdated/deprecated and even though I've

Would it be possible to split the package into

Bug#394624: emacspeak: depends on tclx8.3

2006-10-22 Thread Michael Prokop
Package: emacspeak

emacspeak depends on tclx8.3 whereas tclx8.4 exists in Debian as
well. I for example have tcl8.3, tcl8.4 and tclx8.3 on my box and
would like to remove tcl8.3/tclx8.3 and use the newer tcl8.4/tclx8.4
instead.

AFAICS emacspeak always uses '/usr/bin/tcl' in the shebang line and
does not depend on a specific version itself. It would be great if
the emacspeak package in Debian would use and depend on the current
tcl[x] version.

Bug#388525: initscripts: support disabling of swap via bootoption noswap

2006-09-20 Thread Michael Prokop
Package: initscripts
Version: 2.86.ds1-20
Severity: wishlist
Tags: patch

As discussed on #pkg-sysvinit (with pere and mbiebl) it would be
great to be able to control use of swap-partitions before the system
boots up.

Adding support for a bootoption noswap would provide the option to
disable the use of swap-partitions/-files before booting the system
at all or manually editing /etc/fstab.

Use cases for disabling swap before system startup are for example
corrupt swap-partitions/files, the use of external usb/firewire
devices or even (under certain circumstances of course) forensic
investigations.

There are two init scripts inside the initscripts package which have
to be adjusted: /etc/init.d/checkroot.sh and /etc/init.d/mountall.sh
I've created (tested) patches against the two files which implement
the requested feature.

If you do need any further information or testers please feel free to
contact me.

Description: ivtv Linux kernel module (0.6 branch)

So whereas I'm using the ivtv-source package version 0.7 the
generated Debian package (using m-a) says I'm building the 0.6
branch.

AFAICS the fix should be to adjust the Description line in
control.modules.in.

Bug#389393: ion3: missing depends on x-terminal-emulator

2006-09-25 Thread Michael Prokop
Package: ion3
Version: 20060524-2
Severity: normal

After installing a Debian Etch system using debootstrap and
installing packages xserver-xorg, xfonts-base and ion3, ion3 starts
up but fails to open a terminal as 'x-terminal-emulator' couldn't be
found. IMHO x-terminal-emulator is quite important to use ion3 at
all, so adding x-terminal-emulator | xterm,... to
Depends/Suggests/Recommends would be ge a good idea.

2006-09-28 Thread Michael Prokop
Package: cryptcat

Severity: wishlist

A new upstream version (1.2.1) seems to be available since 2005-10-18:

  http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=11983

I'm not sure about the numbering scheme of the Debian package but
comparing the changelogs seems to indicate that 1.2.1 is a newer
release than 20031202-2+b1 by Debian. I'm also not sure what's the
current state of the license (upstream's README vs.
/usr/share/doc/cryptcat/README.Debian) but it would be nice to have
the latest upstream version in Debian's pool.

Bug#401424: initscripts: please document layout of valid entry for /sys in /etc/fstab

2006-12-03 Thread Michael Prokop
Package: initscripts
Version: 2.86.ds1-36
Severity: wishlist

As discussed with Petter Reinholdtsen on #pkg-sysvinit the fstab
entry for sysfs (if present) has to look like the entry generated by
the initscripts (mountkernfs.sh + mtab.sh). If that's *not* the
case, booting the system complains about something like:

Will now mount local filesystems:mount: /sys already mounted or /sys busy
mount: according to mtab, sysfs is already mounted on /sys
failed

Important is that the sysfs entry in /etc/fstab exactly looks like
the entry generated by the domount sysfs ... command of the
initscripts. Therefore a valid fstab-entry for sysfs has to look
like:

sysfs /sys sysfs rw,nosuid,nodev,noexec 0 0

Please document this behaviour in README.Debian.

Bug#381903: hibernate: misleading Clearing Software Suspend 2 signatures... message

Package: hibernate
Version: 1.93-1
Severity: normal

The line:

The header of the script says:

But Clearing Software Suspend 2 signatures... sounds like all the
software suspend signatures are removed, no matter what's the
current state. Adjusting the infotext according to the
implementation would help avoiding misinterpretations.

2006-08-07 Thread Michael Prokop
Package: adduser
Version: 3.95
Severity: normal

If the nis-package is installed and available,
/usr/share/perl5/Debian/AdduserCommon.pm
executes '/usr/bin/rpcinfo -p'.

If portmap isn't running, rpcinfo returns:

rpcinfo: can't contact portmapper: RPC: Remote system error - Connection
refused

Running 'adduser $USERNAME' prints 3 of those messages:
one for 'Adding user', one for 'Adding new group' and another one
for 'Adding new user ... with group ...'.

Would be nice to improve handling of nis error messages as people
seem to interpret the message as a bug.

I just installed zshdb 0.01git+20081010-1 (from the Debian pool), using
ftp://ftp.debian.org/debian/pool/main/z/zsh-beta/zsh-beta_4.3.6-dev-1+20081011-1.dsc
which I manually build on a current Debian/sid system (because the x86
package isn't available on the mirrors yet), and using emacsen-common 1.4.17.

During installation of zshdb I noticed:

Installation finished without any further errors and zshdb seems to
work on plain console as well as in Emacs. I don't know whether the
above is just a cosmetic bug or not, so please feel free to close
this bugreport if you consider it not being a bug.

Thanks for packaging zshdb. :)

Bug#500579: fai-server: .dpkg-old scripts are being executed

2008-09-29 Thread Michael Prokop
Package: fai-server
Version: 3.2.10
Severity: normal

(As discussed on IRC with MrFai, reporting to the BTS as requested.)

Problem: Scripts like config/scripts/$CLASS/*.dpkg-old are being
executed by FAI.

Explanation: This might be dangerous if a user edits a script and
installs a configuration shipped as a Debian package which marks the
files as config files. Because then the scripts are executed twice
(and at least one of them might be b0rken :)).

Propotion: Would be great if scripts ending with .dpkg-old,
.dpkg-new, .dpkg-inst,... would be ignored during execution of FAI.

Bug#501184: aufs-tools: provide /usr/sbin/mount.aufs as /sbin/mount.aufs

2008-10-05 Thread Michael Prokop
Package: aufs-tools
Version: 0+20080719-4
Severity: important

Is there a specific reason why the aufs mount script is provided
under /usr/sbin instead of /sbin?

Quoting util-linux-2.13.1.1/mount/mount.c:

[...]
  if (type  strlen(type)  100) {
   sprintf(mountprog, /sbin/mount.%s, type);
   if (stat(mountprog, statbuf) == 0) {
[...]

- so there's a different behaviour between installing
the mount script of aufs as /usr/sbin/mount.aufs vs.
/sbin/mount.aufs.

, [ man aufs ]
| If you dislike the difference between the aufs entries in /etc/mtab
| and /proc/mounts, and if you are using mount(8) in util−linux
| package, then try ./mount.aufs script.
`

You can verify the different behaviour on your own running the usage
example from the manpage:

, [ man aufs ]
| # mount -v -t aufs br:/day0:/base none /u
| none on /u type aufs (rw,xino=/day0/.aufs.xino,br:/day0=rw:/base=ro)
| # mount -v -o remount,\
| prepend:/day1,\
| xino=/day1/xino,\
| mod:/day0=ro,\
| del:/day0 \
| /u
| none on /u type aufs (rw,xino=/day1/xino,br:/day1=rw:/base=ro)
`

Credits for bringing up the issue to Tong Sun.

chance to get some debugging information.

That's what I can find in the core file:

Looking at the output of 'wmctrl -l' (comparing the listing of a
working desktop setup with the one where fbpanel segfaults) it
seems to be the following line that's causing problems for fbpanel:

Notice the german umlaut 'ü' in the last word of the above line, I
guess it's the one being responsable for the segfaulting fbpanel.

As a reference:

If the regular in-tree driver works, while the one from the seperate

Yes, that was and still is my plan. :)

Bug#495017: pose: hardware exception #3 on startup

2008-08-13 Thread Michael Prokop
Package: pose
Version: 3.5-9.1
Severity: important

In Debian we seem to have the same problem as reported in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pose/+bug/173799

When loading a ROM with pose version 3.5-9.1 I also get:

Hardware exception #3 occurred while the emulator was calling the
Palm OS function DlkDispatchRequest. The emulator is now in an
unstable state and will reset.

Resetting it does not help because the error message appears again
and again and again and...

Applying http://launchpadlibrarian.net/10715752/50_gcc41.dpatch
fixes the problem for me as well.

Notice: I'm not sure about the severity of this bugreport.
Is this package really working for anyone in this version right now?

ACK, but gnu-fdisk uses libparted (whereas util-linux does not) and
several users WANT to use gnu-fdisk BECAUSE of some features not
available within util-linux. So why not let the user decide which
binaries he prefers? If you think update-alternatives isn't the way
to go why not just provide gnu-fdisk as /sbin/gnu-fdisk and cfdisk
as /sbin/gnu-cfdisk?

Yes, I'm really sorry for this. I don't have so much time to give to
this package right now and I forgot this issue. I've filled an RFA, so
feel free to adopt the package. If you don't want to, it would be very

Thanks for responding, I personally don't use it on my own as well.

Thanks for reporting, I could verify that.

Cahya: AFAIK the inotify API of the Linux kernel does not support
recursive listening on a directory on its own. The recursive option
of iwatch seems to provide just that already. Though AFAICS it would
be necessary to add new inotify events on new, just created
directories to not miss any further file system actions. Am I right?
Any chance you could implement that? :)

Debian as a distribution is the link between users and upstream.
If users can't locate upstream's tracker (or find out whether it's a
bug in upstream or just in the Debian package) we should help them
either in pointing them to upstream's place or in forwarding their

Bug#495850: package deviates from standard mail-transport-agent dependency.

2008-08-21 Thread Michael Prokop
* Andreas Henriksson [EMAIL PROTECTED] [20080820 22:25]:

Your packag depends on postfix | mail-transport-agent. Exim (v4) is generally
considered the default mta in Debian and is also the package providing
mail-transport-agent which has the highest priority.
Is there any particular reason why your package needs to deviate from
which mta is pulled in by default? If not, could you please consider
streamlining your package with the rest so we have a uniform behaviour in
 debian?

Looking at
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/pkgreport.cgi?submitter=andreas%40fatal.se
you maybe should have discussed that on debian-devel before
massfilling a bugreport.

When running:

the text within the 'literallayout

this is a problem in your kernel, not with open-vm.

i've verified it by building open-vm against 2.6.26-1-486 when having a
 2.6.26-1-686, thus closing.

Oh and you have your kerneldir somewhere else than in the default
directory and can build against it? The buildsystem tries to
directly access /usr/include/linux/autoconf.h which I don't have
there but specified to look at the given kerneldir instead. Works
fine for 20 packages but only open-vm is failing

It's running inside a chroot and until this version it used to

Regarding udev: udev isn't present at this stage of installation,
though udev is installed later on after installation of fuse-utils
and correctly detects that it's running inside a chroot and
therefor won't start up:

[...]
A chroot environment has been detected, udev not started.

So maybe fuse-utils should detect whether the udev initscript is
present at all and if not just skip the invoke-rc.d call?

If you need any further information please let me know, as it's a
FAI based setup I can rebuild the installation setup on request.
