Bug#675865: gdm3: only shows random subset of users in greeter
Package: gdm3 Version: 3.0.4-4 Severity: normal Hi, this isn't a new problem (have seen it for a few months or so). Bug#647680: gnome-settings-daemon: should use and prefer apple_backlight
Package: gnome-settings-daemon Version: 3.2.1-1 Severity: normal Tags: upstream patch Backlight on certain apple laptops (MacBookPro7,1 in my case) has been broken for a while now for a couple of reasons: - The old module mbp_nvidia_bl has been renamed to apple_bl in more recent kernels. - The nouveau backlight support has never worked properly on my nVidia chipset (NVAF). See also: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=625171 https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=31920 For these reasons, I need to tell gnome-settings-daemon (previously gnome-power-manager) to use apple_backlight instead of nv_backlight or mbp_backlight. The following one-line patch does the trick for me, it would be nice if it could be applied in Debian or upstream. Bug#623046: liborc-0.4-0: breaks video in totem/gstreamer
On 18/04/11 09:01, Sebastian Dröge wrote: does this happen for every video? What's the content of /proc/cpuinfo ? /proc/cpuinfo at the end. It happens for all videos, however I noticed that if they are scaled 1:1 (100%) the artefacts disappear and the video is perfect. If I try even slightly smaller or bigger (or full screen) it becomes wonky again. Could you run gst-launch-0.10 -v playbin2 uri=file:///path/to/file Does this happen there too? If it does, please attach the complete output here No it doesn't happen there. Bug#619070: linux-image-2.6.38-1-amd64: Please enable CONFIG_B43_PHY_N (no longer BROKEN)
Package: linux-2.6 Version: 2.6.38-1 Severity: wishlist Hello, now that 2.6.38 is out, it would be nice to enable the CONFIG_B43_PHY_N option which is no longer marked as BROKEN. This will allow people like me with a Broadcom BCM4322 (14e4:4322 and 14e4:432b) to use the in-kernel b43 driver instead of the proprietary wl driver. I tested it and it works very well, with two caveats: - the rate seems to be limited to 11M at present - I had to patch b43-fwcutter to be able to extract the necessary firmware Nevertheless, it seems to work better in a lot of ways, so it would be nice to have the option. Bug#618862: systemd: ignores keyscript in crypttab
Package: systemd Version: 19-1 Severity: normal Hi, my root and swap partition are encrypted with cryptsetup; root uses a custom keyscript and swap uses the cryptsetup-provided decrypt_derived keyscript. systemd seems to be unable to work with keyscripts at all, and requires password input for every volume that wasn't activated already. Luckily, my root FS is activated by the initramfs. I don't want to have to type in a password for every encrypted volume: on some of my machines this would mean having to type five or more passwords on boot. Is there any way of using keyscripts or some equivalent with systemd? Bug#585378: cryptsetup: segfaults on boot (on powerpc)
Package: cryptsetup Version: 2:1.1.2-1 Severity: critical Justification: breaks the whole system cryptsetup asks the password for the root (luks) partition and proceeds to segfault. After which it asks the password again. Critical because it made this laptop unbootable. I repaired it with another powerpc laptop, target mode and chroot. It's a bit tricky to figure out what's going on this early in the boot, and I'm a bit loath to upgrade to the current version of cryptsetup again. However, if I can help in any way, let me know. Bug#325495: bluez-utils: Re-pairing bluetooth hid devices without help from other input devices
On 03/07/09 17:51, Filippo Giunchedi wrote: do you see this bug with bluez 4 as well? AFAIK hid connections should be restored plus the device if the device is in hid mode then there should be no problem Hi Filipo, Well, my use case has become a bit more complicated: 1) my dongle with HID proxy support died, so it's not in HID mode. Let's disregard HID mode for this use case. 2) sometimes the link key of the keyboard changes: empty batteries, paired it with another OS, pc, whatever. 3) when it boots and it tries to mount my crypto root - there's my first hurdle: typing in a password while in the initramfs environment. Another problem is the initramfs root console for troubleshooting or if there's a fsck that needs manual intervention or some such problems. Any keyboard interaction in early boot is a problem. Ideally there'd be some support in the initramfs to check if there's a bt keyboard around, check if we have connected to it before, and connect or initiate a pairing with a pregenerated random number if the link keys have changed (with a basic agent for the console). So the problem is that there's no agent that's usable early on in the boot, that can pair a keyboard without help of another input device. Now the question is: do we care about those BT dongles that don't have HID proxy support, and do we care about keyboard interaction in early boot without a wired keyboard nearby. I leave it up to you if you want to close this bug or leave it as a wishlist bug. Regards, Mourad PS: As an aside, if you can reach the GDM login without keyboard, then there's the possibility of dealing with it there (see an old thread I initiated here): http://mail.gnome.org/archives/gdm-list/2007-August/msg00018.html and the following GDM bugs: http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=467657 http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=467658 -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. You can avoid this conflict by putting the following code in config/initializers/ directory. snip Note: activesupport/lib/active_support/core_ext/string/unicode.rb of Rails 2.1.0 removes chars method from String class of Ruby 1.8.7. Package: gnumeric Version: 1.8.1-1 Severity: normal If I try to save a document to a specific xls file type, and I'm using a currency cell format with certain currency symbols, the currency format will be corrupted when I try to reload the document - a latin small letter a with grave character will get appended to the currency format. Furthermore, more such characters will get added on every subsequent save. This bug happens when I try to save to MS Excel (tm) 97/2000/XP format and MS Excel (tm) 97/2000/XP 5.0/95 format. It does not happen with MS Excel (tm) 5.0/95 format. It occurs when using the Yen, Pound, and Euro currency symbols, but not with the Dollar sign or any of the other ones like CAD or TWD. Steps to reproduce: - Create new workbook - Enter a number in a cell (for instance 10 in A1) - Change the cell format of A1 (Ctrl+1) - For Number, choose Currency category, and choose Euro (f.e.) - Save the document as MS Excel (tm) 97/2000/XP file type - Close the document and reload. - ... for additional corruption save it again immediately after reloading. Allright. Even though I'd argue that this bug is already being tracked (cfr my bug report to the kernel bugzilla), I understand that there might be other bugs and regressions lurking in there - ie. I shouldn't be pushing for my pet bug at the cost of testing for other bugs. It does mean however that nforce2 users will most likely not be testing the Debian/Lenny kernels. The trade-off is sacrificing a relatively small pool of nforce2 Debian kernel testers vs a large pool of Juju firewire testers. If those are mutually exclusive, then I agree with you - the new stack is more important. I was hoping it wasn't mutually exclusive through blacklisting or another system, but I also understand you don't want to introduce this complexity for a potentially temporary issue. I'm doubtful however that this regression will be fixed by the kernel guys before Lenny's release. If it's not, we might have this discussion again :). It had been working perfectly in all previous versions. I was looking to manually load the old stack/sbp2 modules, but I see you chose not to include them anymore. I found this message from Stefan Richter that explains things a bit: The NVidia nForce2 chipset has an own FireWire controller, and that one is only supported by a gross hack in ohci1394 and at the moment unsupported in firewire-ohci. There is even a bug report in Red Hat's bugzilla where fw-ohci hung up when trying to initialize an nForce2 chip. See: http://www.ussg.iu.edu/hypermail/linux/kernel/0707.2/3700.html This is a regression for me, and all nforce2 firewire users. I believe it's also one of the reasons Linux 2.6.22 shipped with 2 firewire stacks instead of just the new one: the new one just doesn't cover all cases yet. I therefore respectfully request you re-enable the old stack. Bug#426401: Search bar behavior reverted to firefox one
In my use, I tend to do many more searches than actual typing of URLs, and this bug dramatically impacts Epiphany's usability. If I'm typical, then this bug's severity would more properly be important. I agree with Nathaniel here, I keep hitting this bug every minute. Settings in my about:config are the same as what's been mentioned by njs. If it's a feature whose default setting has now been switched to off, that's ok, I could live with that - but I'd like to be able to switch it back on. Bug#385530: epiphany-browser: Download Link/Save link as always fails
Package: epiphany-browser Version: 2.14.3-1 Severity: normal This is not a new bug, I had it in the 2.12 days too I believe (I didn't bother to report it back then because I found a workaround and a new major release was imminent) Anyway, it seems like the epiphany's disk cache can be wedged in a state where normal browsing still functions normally, but explicitly downloading something just shows the download dialog, with the download in question marked as Failed. Any download will fail. If I remember correctly, each instance where I started experiencing this bug was after I had a failed or corrupted download; for instance after running out of disk space in the middle of a download. The workaround I use when this happens is to move the ~/.gnome2/epiphany/mozilla/epiphany/Cache directory out of the way. Bug#238453: ddclient: cannot connect to members.dyndns.org:80 socket: IO::Socket::INET: Bad hostname 'members.dyndns.org'
I am quite sure that the error you reported is actually a problem with name resolution either on your system or with your provider at that time. On this grounds I am closing this bug. In case you disagree and ddclient is still not working for you, please drop me a note! I still need to verify, but I believe this problem arises when ddclient is used on ipup, and resolvconf is in active use. I get this bug on some of my machines using DSL - ddclient basically never updates on ipup, and I need to work around it. I notice that the machines that don't have resolvconf installed don't have this issue. ppp receives new nameservers, but resolv.conf isn't updated yet when ddclient is activated. So the ordering of resolvconf or ddclient would need to be adjusted. I might be wrong though, like I said I still need to double check - I won't have much time to look into this any time soon though. -- M -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. The dongle doesnt reset to HID mode when system is shut off ... so I have no ability to use the keyboard in grub! I need to write a script to reset it to hid mode when the system is shut off. How can i do this? The hid2hci program supposedly provides an option to switch back to hid mode ... but it doesn't work. I get the error No devices in hid mode found (obviously!). we don't know the magic sequence to switch it back into HID mode. I'm assuming the situation hasn't changed in the mean time. Looking at the device_list in hid2hci.c we can see that only the non-logitech dongles mentioned there can be switched back to hid mode. Rock = not switching to hci on boot means no bluetooth functionality, and people who installed the bluetooth packages probably expect to be able to use it. Hard place = switching to hci means that logitech users won't be able to use their keyboard during boot-up (BIOS and GRUB). -- Mourad -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#368779: epiphany-browser: Doesn't fall back to windows-125x characters when an iso-8859-x page brokenly contains windows-125x only characters
So... I took a look at this issue, and actually, i'd say the bug is the other way around. The previous behaviour was not exactly to fallback to windows-125x, but rather to interpret iso-8859-x as windows-125x... If you look which encoding is selected when correctly displaying the page, you'll see it's iso-8859-1, which is wrong. That will be a wontfix for me. I'm not going to makecbe interpreted as windows-1252... I understand, but countless sites do get it wrong: they do use windows-1252 characters even when declaring iso-8859-1. When testing on Firefox or IE the site authors don't see a problem, so (epiphany) users like me are forced to change the encoding manually every time. It's a bit tedious to manually change the encoding for every other site I try to look at. That's why I'd like to ask you to please reconsider. HID2HCI_ENABLED=0 in /etc/default/bluetooth and modify /etc/init.d/bluetooth accordingly? (and put a note in NEWS.Debian about it) which are the effects of not switching it on at boot like it is done now? Well, I'm not sure if this is the case with all dongles, but in my case not switching means bluetooth won't work. HID devices will look like fake USB HID devices, so they'll still work, and at reboot-time (BIOS screen, boot loader etc) these HID devices will be usable too. However, non-HID bluetooth devices won't work until the user chooses to switch it from HID to HCI mode. I tend to think it should stay on by default, because I'd presume that users that install the bluetooth package would actually want to use bluetooth. It sucks for people like me who have to manually switch it off again so they can access their bootloader/bios on reboot, but I can either not install the bluetooth package if I only have HID devices, or manually deactive it if I sometimes use other types of devices. I think the best thing of course would be to get hid2hci fixed so it works in both directions, and I'll probably file a bug upstream. This might not be possible to fix because of lack of documentation, and/or hardware to reverse-engineer - I don't know anything about USB sniffing. Another option I might look into, is to power down the USB port/hub in the shutdown scripts (via sysfs for example), so the dongle gets reset (a hard reset usually brings the dongle back to its original state, ie HID mode). However even if both of these wouldn't work I think it's best to leave it on. No sense in causing problems for users with working hardware, if it doesn't even solve the problem for users with problematic hardware. Bug#365248: udev: generated rule in z25_persistent-net.rules matches both bridge and ethernet interface
Package: udev Version: 0.091-1 Severity: important Hi, on one of my boxes, I use bridge-utils and (previously) nameif to enslave an ethernet device named lan (and some tap devices named vpn) to a bridge interface br0. There's also a not-enslaved ethernet device named modem The rules that were initially generated in z25_persistent-net.rules were: ACTION==add, SUBSYSTEM==net, SYSFS{address}==00:11:22:33:44:55, NAME=eth0 ACTION==add, SUBSYSTEM==net, SYSFS{address}==ff:11:22:33:44:55, NAME=eth1 (it would've been nice to know, that the naming functionality would conflict with nameif before I rebooted this headless box; Me using nameif gave me a false sense of security) I quickly changed eth0 and eth1 to lan and modem resp. - no problem there. However, the problem is that the bridge br0 has the same MAC address as lan, so the first persistent rule matched br0 too. It tried to rename br0 to lan too, but as the name lan was already taken, it left it at br0_temp. udevinfo -a -p /sys/class/net/br0 gives me: looking at device '/class/net/br0': KERNEL==br0 SUBSYSTEM==net SYSFS{weight}==0 SYSFS{tx_queue_len}==0 SYSFS{flags}==0x1003 SYSFS{mtu}==1500 SYSFS{carrier}==1 SYSFS{broadcast}==ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff SYSFS{address}==00:11:22:33:44:55 SYSFS{type}==1 SYSFS{features}==0x1000 SYSFS{ifindex}==6 SYSFS{iflink}==6 SYSFS{addr_len}==6 Not exactly a lot to work with... udevinfo -a -p /sys/class/net/lan gives me: looking at device '/class/net/lan': KERNEL==lan SUBSYSTEM==net SYSFS{weight}==64 SYSFS{tx_queue_len}==1000 SYSFS{flags}==0x1103 SYSFS{mtu}==1500 SYSFS{carrier}==1 SYSFS{broadcast}==ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff SYSFS{address}==00:11:22:33:44:55 SYSFS{type}==1 SYSFS{features}==0x1003 SYSFS{ifindex}==2 SYSFS{iflink}==2 SYSFS{addr_len}==6 looking at device '/devices/pci:00/:00:09.0': ID==:00:09.0 BUS==pci DRIVER==skge SYSFS{modalias}==pci:v11ABd4320sv10B8sdB452bc02sc00i00 SYSFS{local_cpus}==1 SYSFS{irq}==177 SYSFS{class}==0x02 SYSFS{subsystem_device}==0xb452 SYSFS{subsystem_vendor}==0x10b8 SYSFS{device}==0x4320 SYSFS{vendor}==0x11ab looking at device '/devices/pci:00': ID==pci:00 BUS== DRIVER== I ended up changing the generated rules into the following: ACTION==add, SUBSYSTEM==net, SYSFS{address}==00:11:22:33:44:55, DRIVER==skge, NAME=lan ACTION==add, SUBSYSTEM==net, SYSFS{address}==ff:11:22:33:44:55, DRIVER==via-rhine, NAME=modem This isn't ideal because the driver may change names with successive kernel upgrades (sk98lin - skge) but it works for now. Which printer do you use and what PPD files did you install on your system? If in doubt, attach /etc/cups/ppd/your printer.ppd. The printer is a Epson Stylus 1290 connected via USB to the MacOSX (panther) machine. I hadn't copied the corresponding PPD as I assumed that as it would auto-detect the existence of the remote printer, it would also use the PPD info from there. Do you reproduce this with the CUPS administration page at http://127.0.0.1:631/? (Use Manage printers, then Configure printers.) There it is slightly different: Configure printer tries to redirect me to http://powerbook.local:631/admin/... , and on that address it gives me a 403 Forbidden - I guess I have to look into the cups configuration on OSX. Now, copying the PPD from /etc/cups/ppd in macosx to my linux machine solves it partially (I can choose the paper size at least, now - but no other options like resolution etc). So why I still think this is a bug: * If it is trying, but can't access the other machine's printer settings for some reason (Forbidden), it should maybe mention something about it in the UI. * If a printer is automatically detected, I don't think it's right to expect users to copy PPDs over manually. beats the point of automatic detection a bit, don't you think?
