Bug#1066060: libpam-modules: pam_lastlog.so missing

2024-03-11 Thread Mourad De Clerck
Package: libpam-modules
Version: 1.5.3-6
Severity: normal

I noticed the following line in my logs:

login[2449]: PAM unable to dlopen(pam_lastlog.so):
/usr/lib/security/pam_lastlog.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file
or directory

I looked in the deb files from snapshot.debian.org, and noticed the last version
that had it was 1.5.2-9.1 - starting from 1.5.3-1 it disappeared.

Maybe it's fallout from the time_t transition and you're already aware of it, in
which case feel free to close.

Thanks,

I just tried restarting multiple times (4-5), it still works for me.

Can you verify in "about:support" whether webrender is really disabled?

I suspect this is upstream bug #1672139:

As a workaround, I disabled webrender using

Strange: on my machine it shows the UI by default in

Bug#787579: courier-ssl: mkdhparams default bit size is insufficient for libnss3 = 3.19.1

2015-06-02 Thread Mourad De Clerck
Package: courier-ssl
Version: 0.73.1-1.6
Severity: important

Hi, after upgrading libnss3 on my sid box, sending out email using icedove
with STARTTLS to courier-mta stopped working with the error:

courieresmtpd: STARTTLS failed: couriertls: accept: error:14094417:SSL
routines:SSL3_READ_BYTES:sslv3 alert illegal parameter

I found a relevant discussion on bug #787505, where it's mentioned that by
design, libnss3 no longer accepts keys with 1024 bits.

Turns out mkdhparams - which also runs on postinst - only creates 768 bit
keys by default.

Maybe it's time to change this.

Do you use systemd?

Yes. I mentioned it in the initial bugreport.

I am running systemd. Downgrading to 0.6.21-1 fixes the problem for me.

Bug#675865: gdm3: only shows random subset of users in greeter

2012-06-03 Thread Mourad De Clerck
Package: gdm3
Version: 3.0.4-4
Severity: normal

Hi,

this isn't a new problem (have seen it for a few months or so). But the
gdm greeter only shows me zero, one or two users from my list of three
local users that can log in. I thought it was to do with the changes in
accountsservice, but my User Accounts panel seems to show the accounts
correctly.

I can log in using the Other... option, but it's still somewhat
annoying.

Thanks,

Well, I don't have this hardware anymore, so I can't verify anymore whether

Bug#648975: libgtk-3-0: Alt/Meta handling broken in vte

Package: libgtk-3-0

The Alt key doesn't behave like before in gnome-terminal since I upgraded
from 3.2.1-1 to 3.2.2-1. Alt used to behave like Meta in programs like
the Midnight Commander.

Downgrading to 3.2.1-1 solves the problem.

Bug#647680: gnome-settings-daemon: should use and prefer apple_backlight

2011-11-04 Thread Mourad De Clerck
Package: gnome-settings-daemon
Version: 3.2.1-1
Severity: normal
Tags: upstream patch

Backlight on certain apple laptops (MacBookPro7,1 in my case) has been
broken for a while now for a couple of reasons:
- The old module mbp_nvidia_bl has been renamed to apple_bl in more
  recent kernels.
- The nouveau backlight support has never worked properly on my nVidia
  chipset (NVAF). See also:
  https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=625171
  https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=31920

For these reasons, I need to tell gnome-settings-daemon (previously
gnome-power-manager) to use apple_backlight instead of nv_backlight or
mbp_backlight.

The following one-line patch does the trick for me, it would be nice if
it could be applied in Debian or upstream.

Thanks,

Bug#642283: epiphany-browser: doesn't connect to certain sites, like paypal.com

2011-09-20 Thread Mourad De Clerck
Package: epiphany-browser
Version: 3.0.4-1

Hi.

Pretty straight forward, it's simply not possible to connect to certain
websites,
like paypal - the following error message is shown:

Oops! It was impossible to load this website
The website at http://www.paypal.com/ is probably unavailable, the precise
error was:

Connection terminated unexpectedly.

I tried switching the user agent in case PayPal would do something tricky, but
no dice.
It works in Iceweasel, though.

Right. It's a shame this regression was never resolved. But there's no
point in holding up progress for the very small subset of users that own
and still use this hardware - even if I'm part of that group ;-)

Time to move on.

You're right, removing libgnomevfs2-0 just seems to trigger #617759 -
using LD_BIND_NOW=1 allows me to start up icedove without libgnomevfs2-0
installed. I confused the symptom for the cause.

Bug#633504: systemd: hwclock in localtime results in wrong system time

2011-07-10 Thread Mourad De Clerck
Package: systemd
Version: 29-1
Severity: important

I've got LOCAL in /etc/adjtime, and UTC=no in /etc/default/rcS.

Since systemd 29-1 my PC's clock is off by two hours on boot (the timezone
+ DST offset). So the system time is actually set to UTC. Executing
hwclock --hctosys after booting corrects the system time.

I also noticed that systemd reports the following during boot:
Hwclock configred in localtime, applying delta of 120 minutes to system time

Bug#627492: linux-image-2.6.39-1-amd64: please enable CONFIG_BACKLIGHT_APPLE

2011-05-21 Thread Mourad De Clerck
Package: linux-2.6
Version: 2.6.39-1

The old backlight driver for backlight on MacBooks has been reworked and
renamed.
mbp_nvidia_bl is now apple_bl. It would be useful to have this module built, so
apple users can have working backlight control.

Bug#623046: liborc-0.4-0: breaks video in totem/gstreamer

2011-04-18 Thread Mourad De Clerck
On 18/04/11 09:01, Sebastian Dröge wrote:
 does this happen for every video? What's the content of /proc/cpuinfo ?

/proc/cpuinfo at the end.

It happens for all videos, however I noticed that if they are scaled 1:1
(100%) the artefacts disappear and the video is perfect. If I try even
slightly smaller or bigger (or full screen) it becomes wonky again.

 Could you run

 gst-launch-0.10 -v playbin2 uri=file:///path/to/file

 Does this happen there too? If it does, please attach the complete
 output here

No it doesn't happen there. Scaling seems different with gst-launch
though, since it isn't proportional.

Bug#623046: liborc-0.4-0: breaks video in totem/gstreamer

2011-04-16 Thread Mourad De Clerck
Package: liborc-0.4-0
Version: 1:0.4.12-1
Severity: important

Hello.

The latest liborc (1:0.4.12-1) distorts the video in gstreamer (totem).
All I see are horizontal lines, as if only the Y-axis was working.

Downgrading to 1:0.4.11-2 fixed the problem.

Thanks,

Bug#619070: linux-image-2.6.38-1-amd64: Please enable CONFIG_B43_PHY_N (no longer BROKEN)

2011-03-20 Thread Mourad De Clerck
Package: linux-2.6
Version: 2.6.38-1
Severity: wishlist

Hello,

now that 2.6.38 is out, it would be nice to enable the CONFIG_B43_PHY_N option
which is no longer marked as BROKEN. This will allow people like me with a
Broadcom BCM4322 (14e4:4322 and 14e4:432b) to use the in-kernel b43 driver
instead of the proprietary wl driver.

I tested it and it works very well, with two caveats:
 - the rate seems to be limited to 11M at present
 - I had to patch b43-fwcutter to be able to extract the necessary firmware

Nevertheless, it seems to work better in a lot of ways, so it would be nice to
have the option.

Thanks,

Bug#618862: systemd: ignores keyscript in crypttab

2011-03-18 Thread Mourad De Clerck
Package: systemd
Version: 19-1
Severity: normal

Hi,

my root and swap partition are encrypted with cryptsetup; root uses a custom
keyscript and swap uses the cryptsetup-provided decrypt_derived keyscript.
systemd seems to be unable to work with keyscripts at all, and requires
password input for every volume that wasn't activated already. Luckily, my
root FS is activated by the initramfs.

I don't want to have to type in a password for every encrypted volume: on
some of my machines this would mean having to type five or more passwords on
boot.

Is there any way of using keyscripts or some equivalent with systemd?

FYI, some (abbreviated) info on my machine.

/etc/fstab:

while the website in the original report seems a bit better, there's
still quite a few websites out there that peg the CPU to 100% and simply
stop rendering.

An example: http://yehudakatz.com/

tested on midori and epiphany with similar results.

Bug#599573: add support for LaCie 321 (LCA21C0)

2010-10-08 Thread Mourad De Clerck
Package: ddccontrol-db
Version: 20061014-4

Hi,

in attach the LCA21C0.xml file I created for the LaCie 321, in addition
to the ddccontrol output log.

I used osd2 for control 0xfb (OSD Lock Out) even though it's not a
Samsung, because I already used osd for 0xe3.

Kind regards,

Bug#585477: mysql-server-5.1: mysqld can't start [initgroups()] with libnss-mysql enabled

2010-09-09 Thread Mourad De Clerck
Hi,

just wanted to mention that I'm using libnss-mysql and mysql
5.1.47-1~bpo50+1 without problems. Maybe there's something else in your
configuration that's causing the problem?

Hello,

as we're starting to develop on rails3, it would be nice to have the latest

I don't understand why, but after upgrading again to the same (latest)
version of cryptsetup, I can't reproduce this issue. Maybe my initramfs
was somehow badly created the first time around, or there was some
interaction with another dependency. Either way, the problem seems gone.
Sorry for the noise.

Bug#585378: cryptsetup: segfaults on boot (on powerpc)

2010-06-09 Thread Mourad De Clerck
Package: cryptsetup
Version: 2:1.1.2-1
Severity: critical
Justification: breaks the whole system

cryptsetup asks the password for the root (luks) partition and proceeds to
segfault. After which it asks the password again. Critical because it made
this laptop unbootable. I repaired it with another powerpc laptop, target
mode and chroot. It's a bit tricky to figure out what's going on this early
in the boot, and I'm a bit loath to upgrade to the current version of
cryptsetup again. However, if I can help in any way, let me know.

Kind regards,

It seems that with boolean custom_fields the form elements to set and clear

2009-11-14 Thread Mourad De Clerck

apache2-mpm-itk is very similar to apache2-mpm-prefork, and I have been using
passenger with this mpm for a while now (not the debian package obviously).
It would be nice if the dependencies were fixed to this, for instance:
apache2-mpm-worker | apache2-mpm-prefork | apache2-mpm-itk

pommed seems to segfault if it can't find /sys/class/i2c-dev/... Simply

Bug#325495: bluez-utils: Re-pairing bluetooth hid devices without help from other input devices

 do you see this bug with bluez 4 as well? AFAIK hid connections should be
 restored plus the device if the device is in hid mode then there should be
 no problem

Hi Filipo,

Well, my use case has become a bit more complicated:

1) my dongle with HID proxy support died, so it's not in HID mode. Let's
disregard HID mode for this use case.

2) sometimes the link key of the keyboard changes: empty batteries,
paired it with another OS, pc, whatever.

3) when it boots and it tries to mount my crypto root - there's my first
hurdle: typing in a password while in the initramfs environment. Another
problem is the initramfs root console for troubleshooting or if there's
a fsck that needs manual intervention or some such problems. Any
keyboard interaction in early boot is a problem.

Ideally there'd be some support in the initramfs to check if there's a
bt keyboard around, check if we have connected to it before, and connect
or initiate a pairing with a pregenerated random number if the link keys
have changed (with a basic agent for the console).

So the problem is that there's no agent that's usable early on in the
boot, that can pair a keyboard without help of another input device.

Now the question is: do we care about those BT dongles that don't have
HID proxy support, and do we care about keyboard interaction in early
boot without a wired keyboard nearby.

I leave it up to you if you want to close this bug or leave it as a
wishlist bug.

Regards,

Mourad

 Ruby 1.8.7 has String#chars. It returns an Enumerator object but
 Rails 2.0.2 expects an ActiveSupport::Multibyte::Chars object.

 You can avoid this conflict by putting the following code in
 config/initializers/ directory.
snip
 Note: activesupport/lib/active_support/core_ext/string/unicode.rb
 of Rails 2.1.0 removes chars method from String class of Ruby 1.8.7.

Right, thank you, this does the trick.

I guess Debian's rails will need to upgrade to 2.1.0 (eventually), and I
will report this to Tracks upstream.

Bug#485477: libruby1.8: Latest version breaks Tracks (undefined method `[]' for #Enumerable::Enumerator:0x...)

2008-06-09 Thread Mourad De Clerck
Package: libruby1.8
Version: 1.8.7-2
Severity: important

After upgrading from ruby1.8_1.8.6.114-2 to ruby1.8_1.8.7-2, I noticed a rails
webapp called Tracks v1.6, stopped working.

The error is as mentioned in the subject line. Steps to reproduce:
- download http://www.rousette.org.uk/projects/files/tracks-current.zip
- unzip, and configure (you can simply use the blank sqlite3 database provided)
- start the WEBrick server
- see any page except the login/signup page fail
- downgrade to 1.8.6.114-2
- everything works again

I've quickly tried some other rails applications, which seemed to work. I
checked the source of Tracks and didn't see anything obviously wrong.

If I try to save a document to a specific xls file type, and I'm using a
currency cell format with certain currency symbols, the currency format will
be corrupted when I try to reload the document - a latin small letter a with
grave character will get appended to the currency format. Furthermore, more
such characters will get added on every subsequent save.

This bug happens when I try to save to MS Excel (tm) 97/2000/XP format and
MS Excel (tm) 97/2000/XP 5.0/95 format. It does not happen with MS Excel
(tm) 5.0/95 format.

It occurs when using the Yen, Pound, and Euro currency symbols, but not
with the Dollar sign or any of the other ones like CAD or TWD.

Steps to reproduce:
- Create new workbook
- Enter a number in a cell (for instance 10 in A1)
- Change the cell format of A1 (Ctrl+1)
- For Number, choose Currency category, and choose Euro (f.e.)
- Save the document as MS Excel (tm) 97/2000/XP file type
- Close the document and reload.

- ... for additional corruption save it again immediately after reloading. At
this point the corruption will also be visible in OO Calc.

Thanks,

Bug#469585: grub-pc: consistently resets immediately after using boot command

2008-03-05 Thread Mourad De Clerck
Package: grub-pc
Version: 1.96+20080228-1
Severity: important

I seem to be able to install grub-pc correctly on (hd0) (using
grub-install /dev/sda), and grub can see all the necessary files in
(hd0,1)/boot/grub/. As soon as I try to boot one of the entries, it
seems to load the linux kernel and initrd, and then immediately
resets as it tries to boot. Trying to manually boot linux with the
command line results in the same. The same thing happens when I try to
chainload another system, or boot memtest86+.

I tried several older versions of grub-pc too, but none have worked.

On other machines I don't seem to have any problems with it.

This machine boots from a SATA disk connected to a PCI add-in card
containing a SATA controller and ethernet card behind a PCI bridge.

Indeed, by going from 1:4.6.1-8 to 1:4.6.2~pre1-1 the scrollbars have
disappeared, and with them the rendering bug has gone too (it was still
there in 1:4.6.1-8). I don't know what these scrollbars were for,
don't see a way to switch them back on, but in any case I neither need
nor want them. So this bug is indeed resolved for my purposes.

Bug#460998: metastore: add option to (re)create directories

2008-01-15 Thread Mourad De Clerck
Package: metastore
Version: 1-2
Severity: wishlist

It would be nice if metastore recreated empty directories too, considering
neither git nor mercurial store these. Metastore already stores the metadata
of empty directories, one step further would be to simply recreate these, when
requested by the user (a --dir option for instance)

 Pulseaudio doesn't run on a certain machine. The system in question has 2
 sound cards, one of them probably an M-Audio Delta 1010.

 Do you still have this problem with recent pulseaudio packages?

Hi,

I've just checked with pulseaudio 0.9.6-2 (latest in Debian), and the
segfault is gone indeed.

It still doesn't actually work though, because of this error message:

E: module-alsa-sink.c: Failed to set hardware parameters: Operation not
permitted
E: module.c: Failed to load module module-alsa-sink (argument:
device=hw:0 sink_name=alsa_output.pci_1412_1712_alsa_playback_0):
initialization failed.

... but at least it deals with it a bit more gracefully now ^_^

I've looked in the upstream bug list, and it seems the problem is
related to this bug:

http://pulseaudio.org/ticket/132

This soundcard is indeed one of those 24-bit only cards, as shown by

~# aplay -D hw:0 -f cd /dev/urandom
Playing raw data '/dev/urandom' : Signed 16 bit Little Endian, Rate
44100 Hz, Stereo
aplay: set_params:901: Sample format non available

According to the bug report pulseaudio has recently been fixed to deal
with such cards in the latest 0.9.7

I'm lowering the severity, and will wait patiently until 0.9.7 hits the
archive.

Bug#442074: courier-mta: please document changes needed to esmtpauthclient (since 0.55)

2007-09-12 Thread Mourad De Clerck
Package: courier-mta
Version: 0.56.0-2
Severity: minor

The matching of smarthost names in the config files esmtproutes and
esmtpauthclient has changed since Courier 0.55. I experienced problems after
upgrading to Debian's 0.56.0-1, and found more information here:
http://www.courier-mta.org/install.html

The note on the website isn't exactly clear, however. I had something like the
following in my esmtproutes:

: my.mailserver.net,2025

and the following in my esmtpauthclient:

my.mailserver.net userid password

Apparently, now the following is needed in esmtpauthclient:

my.mailserver.net,2025 userid password

It would be nice if this were documented somewhere, in NEWS.Debian or even
the changelog, so the next poor sap that gets hit by this behaviour change
doesn't spend as long as I did to figure out what exactly changed ;-).

Thanks,

Bug#435062: linux-image-2.6.22-1-k7: nforce2 firewire unsupported in new stack, please enable old fw stack

Come up with a quirk fix for NForce2. The person to do so will most
certainly require direct access to this hardware. Note, the NForce2
workaround in ohci1394 is unacceptable by today's standards as it
involves busy-waiting in the interrupt handler. Either we find something
better for firewire-ohci, or NForce2 remains unsupported in firewire-ohci.

This means that we can't expect any nforce2 support for the foreseeable

Allright. Even though I'd argue that this bug is already being tracked
(cfr my bug report to the kernel bugzilla), I understand that there
might be other bugs and regressions lurking in there - ie. I shouldn't
be pushing for my pet bug at the cost of testing for other bugs.

It does mean however that nforce2 users will most likely not be testing
the Debian/Lenny kernels. The trade-off is sacrificing a relatively
small pool of nforce2 Debian kernel testers vs a large pool of Juju
firewire testers. If those are mutually exclusive, then I agree with you
- the new stack is more important.

I was hoping it wasn't mutually exclusive through blacklisting or
another system, but I also understand you don't want to introduce this
complexity for a potentially temporary issue.

I'm doubtful however that this regression will be fixed by the kernel
guys before Lenny's release. If it's not, we might have this discussion
again :).

Anyway, I won't push for this, at least not until Lenny gets close.

Kind regards,

Mourad

Bug#435062: linux-image-2.6.22-1-k7: nforce2 firewire unsupported in new stack, please enable old fw stack

2007-07-28 Thread Mourad De Clerck
Package: linux-image-2.6.22-1-k7
Version: 2.6.22-2
Severity: important

After upgrading to 2.6.22, my firewire controller just stopped working
altogether. It had been working perfectly in all previous versions. I was
looking to manually load the old stack/sbp2 modules, but I see you chose
not to include them anymore.

I found this message from Stefan Richter that explains things a bit:

The NVidia nForce2 chipset has an own FireWire controller, and that one
is only supported by a gross hack in ohci1394 and at the moment
unsupported in firewire-ohci. There is even a bug report in Red Hat's
bugzilla where fw-ohci hung up when trying to initialize an nForce2 chip.

See: http://www.ussg.iu.edu/hypermail/linux/kernel/0707.2/3700.html

This is a regression for me, and all nforce2 firewire users. I believe it's
also one of the reasons Linux 2.6.22 shipped with 2 firewire stacks instead of
just the new one: the new one just doesn't cover all cases yet.

I therefore respectfully request you re-enable the old stack.

Thanks

Bug#426401: Search bar behavior reverted to firefox one

2007-05-30 Thread Mourad De Clerck
 In my use, I tend to do many more searches than actual typing of URLs,
 and this bug dramatically impacts Epiphany's usability. If I'm
 typical, then this bug's severity would more properly be important.

I agree with Nathaniel here, I keep hitting this bug every minute.
Settings in my about:config are the same as what's been mentioned by njs.

If it's a feature whose default setting has now been switched to off,
that's ok, I could live with that - but I'd like to be able to switch it
back on. Please ;-)

Bug#425630: initramfs-tools: typo in init-premount/ps3

2007-05-22 Thread Mourad De Clerck
Package: initramfs-tools
Version: 0.87b
Severity: minor
Tags: patch

Every time I boot this powerpc laptop I got a series of error
messages during the initramfs phase. It seems there's a wrong
test in /usr/share/initramfs-tools/scripts/init-premount/ps3

I'm not sure if it's supposed to be != or =, but I'm pretty
sure it shouldn't be =!

It's only a cosmetic problem for powerpc users, maybe it causes
real problems for ps3 users though.

Thank you,

Mourad DC

Bug#385530: epiphany-browser: Download Link/Save link as always fails

2006-08-31 Thread Mourad De Clerck
Package: epiphany-browser
Version: 2.14.3-1
Severity: normal

This is not a new bug, I had it in the 2.12 days too I believe (I didn't bother
to report it back then because I found a workaround and a new major release was
imminent)

Anyway, it seems like the epiphany's disk cache can be wedged in a state where
normal browsing still functions normally, but explicitly downloading something
just shows the download dialog, with the download in question marked as
Failed. Any download will fail. If I remember correctly, each instance where
I started experiencing this bug was after I had a failed or corrupted download;
for instance after running out of disk space in the middle of a download.

The workaround I use when this happens is to move the
~/.gnome2/epiphany/mozilla/epiphany/Cache directory out of the way.

Thanks,

Bug#238453: ddclient: cannot connect to members.dyndns.org:80 socket: IO::Socket::INET: Bad hostname 'members.dyndns.org'

2006-08-28 Thread Mourad De Clerck
 I am quite sure that the error you reported is actually a problem with
 name resolution either on your system or with your provider at that
 time.

 On this grounds I am closing this bug. In case you disagree and ddclient
 is still not working for you, please drop me a note!

I still need to verify, but I believe this problem arises when ddclient
is used on ipup, and resolvconf is in active use.

I get this bug on some of my machines using DSL - ddclient basically
never updates on ipup, and I need to work around it. I notice that the
machines that don't have resolvconf installed don't have this issue.

ppp receives new nameservers, but resolv.conf isn't updated yet when
ddclient is activated. So the ordering of resolvconf or ddclient would
need to be adjusted.

I might be wrong though, like I said I still need to double check - I
won't have much time to look into this any time soon though.

 If it still doesn't work we should talk to upstream and try to figure this
 out.

Switching device 046d:c704 to HCI mode was successful

 1. The dongle doesnt reset to HID mode when system is shut off ... so I have
 no ability to use the keyboard in grub! I need to write a script to reset it
 to hid mode when the system is shut off. How can i do this? The hid2hci
 program supposedly provides an option to switch back to hid mode ... but it
 doesn't work. I get the error No devices in hid mode found (obviously!).

 we don't know the magic sequence to switch it back into HID mode.

I'm assuming the situation hasn't changed in the mean time.

Looking at the device_list in hid2hci.c we can see that only the
non-logitech dongles mentioned there can be switched back to hid mode.

Rock = not switching to hci on boot means no bluetooth functionality,
and people who installed the bluetooth packages probably expect to be
able to use it.

Hard place = switching to hci means that logitech users won't be able to
use their keyboard during boot-up (BIOS and GRUB).

Bug#368779: epiphany-browser: Doesn't fall back to windows-125x characters when an iso-8859-x page brokenly contains windows-125x only characters

2006-07-05 Thread Mourad De Clerck
 So... I took a look at this issue, and actually, i'd say the bug is the
 other way around. The previous behaviour was not exactly to fallback to
 windows-125x, but rather to interpret iso-8859-x as windows-125x... If
 you look which encoding is selected when correctly displaying the
 page, you'll see it's iso-8859-1, which is wrong.

 That will be a wontfix for me. I'm not going to makecbe
 interpreted as windows-1252...

I understand, but countless sites do get it wrong: they do use
windows-1252 characters even when declaring iso-8859-1.

When testing on Firefox or IE the site authors don't see a problem, so
(epiphany) users like me are forced to change the encoding manually
every time. It's a bit tedious to manually change the encoding for every
other site I try to look at.

That's why I'd like to ask you to please reconsider.

Thanks,

 HID2HCI_ENABLED=0 in /etc/default/bluetooth and modify /etc/init.d/bluetooth
 accordingly? (and put a note in NEWS.Debian about it)

 which are the effects of not switching it on at boot like it is done now?

Well, I'm not sure if this is the case with all dongles, but in my case
not switching means bluetooth won't work.

HID devices will look like fake USB HID devices, so they'll still work,
and at reboot-time (BIOS screen, boot loader etc) these HID devices will
be usable too. However, non-HID bluetooth devices won't work until the
user chooses to switch it from HID to HCI mode.

I tend to think it should stay on by default, because I'd presume that
users that install the bluetooth package would actually want to use
bluetooth. It sucks for people like me who have to manually switch it
off again so they can access their bootloader/bios on reboot, but I can
either not install the bluetooth package if I only have HID devices, or
manually deactive it if I sometimes use other types of devices.

I think the best thing of course would be to get hid2hci fixed so it
works in both directions, and I'll probably file a bug upstream. This
might not be possible to fix because of lack of documentation, and/or
hardware to reverse-engineer - I don't know anything about USB sniffing.

Another option I might look into, is to power down the USB port/hub in
the shutdown scripts (via sysfs for example), so the dongle gets reset
(a hard reset usually brings the dongle back to its original state, ie
HID mode).

However even if both of these wouldn't work I think it's best to leave
it on. No sense in causing problems for users with working hardware, if
it doesn't even solve the problem for users with problematic hardware.

 OK, thank you.

Does this mean the administrator has to change /etc/environment herself?
The note only mentions removing old definitions. Should /etc/environment

Also (not sure if this is a bug, or I'd file it separately) - shouldn't

Bug#365248: udev: generated rule in z25_persistent-net.rules matches both bridge and ethernet interface

2006-04-28 Thread Mourad De Clerck
Package: udev
Version: 0.091-1
Severity: important

Hi,

on one of my boxes, I use bridge-utils and (previously) nameif to enslave an
ethernet device named lan (and some tap devices named vpn) to a bridge
interface br0. There's also a not-enslaved ethernet device named modem

The rules that were initially generated in z25_persistent-net.rules were:

ACTION==add, SUBSYSTEM==net, SYSFS{address}==00:11:22:33:44:55,
NAME=eth0
ACTION==add, SUBSYSTEM==net, SYSFS{address}==ff:11:22:33:44:55,
NAME=eth1

(it would've been nice to know, that the naming functionality would conflict
with nameif before I rebooted this headless box; Me using nameif gave me a false
sense of security)

I quickly changed eth0 and eth1 to lan and modem resp. - no problem there.

However, the problem is that the bridge br0 has the same MAC address as lan,
so the first persistent rule matched br0 too. It tried to rename br0 to
lan too, but as the name lan was already taken, it left it at br0_temp.

udevinfo -a -p /sys/class/net/br0 gives me:

  looking at device '/class/net/br0':
KERNEL==br0
SUBSYSTEM==net
SYSFS{weight}==0
SYSFS{tx_queue_len}==0
SYSFS{flags}==0x1003
SYSFS{mtu}==1500
SYSFS{carrier}==1
SYSFS{broadcast}==ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff
SYSFS{address}==00:11:22:33:44:55
SYSFS{type}==1
SYSFS{features}==0x1000
SYSFS{ifindex}==6
SYSFS{iflink}==6
SYSFS{addr_len}==6

Not exactly a lot to work with...

udevinfo -a -p /sys/class/net/lan gives me:

  looking at device '/class/net/lan':
KERNEL==lan
SUBSYSTEM==net
SYSFS{weight}==64
SYSFS{tx_queue_len}==1000
SYSFS{flags}==0x1103
SYSFS{mtu}==1500
SYSFS{carrier}==1
SYSFS{broadcast}==ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff
SYSFS{address}==00:11:22:33:44:55
SYSFS{type}==1
SYSFS{features}==0x1003
SYSFS{ifindex}==2
SYSFS{iflink}==2
SYSFS{addr_len}==6

  looking at device '/devices/pci:00/:00:09.0':
ID==:00:09.0
BUS==pci
DRIVER==skge
SYSFS{modalias}==pci:v11ABd4320sv10B8sdB452bc02sc00i00
SYSFS{local_cpus}==1
SYSFS{irq}==177
SYSFS{class}==0x02
SYSFS{subsystem_device}==0xb452
SYSFS{subsystem_vendor}==0x10b8
SYSFS{device}==0x4320
SYSFS{vendor}==0x11ab

  looking at device '/devices/pci:00':
ID==pci:00
BUS==
DRIVER==

I ended up changing the generated rules into the following:

ACTION==add, SUBSYSTEM==net, SYSFS{address}==00:11:22:33:44:55,
DRIVER==skge, NAME=lan
ACTION==add, SUBSYSTEM==net, SYSFS{address}==ff:11:22:33:44:55,
DRIVER==via-rhine, NAME=modem

This isn't ideal because the driver may change names with successive kernel
upgrades (sk98lin - skge) but it works for now. It would be nice if the
rules were specific enough to avoid this conflict with bridges.

btw: I marked this as important, because it locked me out of my (remote,
headless) box, twice ;-).

In any case, thanks,

I see. The disadvantage of disabling it is that even though your input

I guess it'd be good to have a NEWS.Debian entry or debconf question on
this issue in that case.

Ideally, upstream would look into fixing the hid2hci switching for the
different types of dongles, but considering Logitech's non-existant
developer support I'm not holding my breath.

Bug#355497: bluez-utils: hid2hci --tohid does not work

2006-03-05 Thread Mourad De Clerck
Package: bluez-utils
Version: 2.25-1
Severity: normal

Hi,

according to the manpage, hid2hci is used to switch HID proxy bluetooth dongle
into the HCI mode and back. The bluetooth initscript tries to make use of it
on stop/shutdown.

However, it doesn't seem to work for me: my symptom is that I have no way of
typing on my system, when I reboot after booting first in Debian. The BIOS or
the GRUB menu are inaccessible if I last booted in Debian.

When I try to execute hid2hci --tohid manually, I get the following error
message:

Bug#268117: mailman upgrade problems... error message is not clear

2005-12-26 Thread Mourad De Clerck
This bug seems to be ignored for quite a while now. I get the same
message on upgrade from 2.1.5-10 to 2.1.6-1:

 Old queue files present

 The directory /var/lib/mailman/qfiles contains files. It needs to be
 empty for the upgrade work properly. Please either flush the queue
 (by way of mailmanctl start, then stopping it and redoing the upgrade
 when it is finished) or remove those files. Note that removing the
 files will lose some emails sent to lists.

These instructions plain don't work... combinations of
/etc/init.d/mailman start|stop or
/usr/lib/mailman/bin/mailmanctl start|stop

do not seem to make the upgrade proceed normally afterwards. It would be
good if the postinst scripts would take account of this eventuality, or
at least provide the right set of instructions to be able to continue
without losing mail.

Bug#334287: gnome-cups-manager: paper/advanced tabs are unusable or empty with IPP printers

  Which printer do you use and what PPD files did you install on your
  system? If in doubt, attach /etc/cups/ppd/your printer.ppd.

The printer is a Epson Stylus 1290 connected via USB to the MacOSX
(panther) machine. I hadn't copied the corresponding PPD as I assumed
that as it would auto-detect the existence of the remote printer, it
would also use the PPD info from there.

  Do you reproduce this with the CUPS administration page at
  http://127.0.0.1:631/? (Use Manage printers, then Configure
  printers.)

There it is slightly different: Configure printer tries to redirect me
to http://powerbook.local:631/admin/... , and on that address it gives
me a 403 Forbidden - I guess I have to look into the cups
configuration on OSX.

Now, copying the PPD from /etc/cups/ppd in macosx to my linux machine
solves it partially (I can choose the paper size at least, now - but no
other options like resolution etc).

So why I still think this is a bug:
* If it is trying, but can't access the other machine's printer settings
for some reason (Forbidden), it should maybe mention something about
it in the UI.
* If a printer is automatically detected, I don't think it's right to
expect users to copy PPDs over manually. beats the point of automatic
detection a bit, don't you think?

Maybe this needs to be reassigned to cups proper, I'm not sure.

Bug#324179: quake3: Status of this ITP?

2005-10-26 Thread Mourad De Clerck
Hi, I was just wondering about the status of this ITP.

Has a suitable upstream source already been selected?

Are there any free or open source mods that don't depend on id
Software's content?

Or will you adopt a similar scheme to the quake2 debian packages?
(quake2/quake2-data in contrib)

Bug#334287: gnome-cups-manager: paper/advanced tabs are unusable or empty with IPP printers

2005-10-16 Thread Mourad De Clerck
Package: gnome-cups-manager
Version: 0.31-1
Severity: important

My /etc/cups/printers.conf is empty, but I was very happy to see the printer
connected to an Apple appear automagically in the list of available printers.

However I'm unable to set it the papersize to A3 or A4, and printing a test
page prints it in US Letter format.

The Paper tab shows the different options Paper size, Paper type and so
on but the combo box next to it is grayed out and empty.

The Advanced tab is completely blank.

Thanks,

Mourad DC
