Bug#967062: /lib/modules/4.19.0-10-amd64/kernel/drivers/gpu/drm/amd/amdgpu/amdgpu.ko: Only black screen after modeset when firmware is present

2020-08-03 Thread Stephen Paul Weber
Package: src:linux
Version: 4.19.132-1
Severity: important
File: /lib/modules/4.19.0-10-amd64/kernel/drivers/gpu/drm/amd/amdgpu/amdgpu.ko

Dear Maintainer,

After installing Debian 10, system booted and worked fine. amdgpu was loaded.
Installed firmware-amd-graphics caused and rebooted: right after grub, upon
modeset, the display goes black (not no video, the display does not go to
sleep) and stays black until a power cycle. System seems to boot fine, but
graphics are dead.

Booting with modprobe.blacklist=amdgpu works fine (that is how I am booted now)
-- running modprobe amdgpu causes display to immediately go black. modprobe
amdgpu && sleep 1 && rmmod amdgpu the display also goes black and stays black,
no recovery.

Tried upgrading to the firmware package in testing, no change.

I have attached a kernel log from a boot where amdgpu was not blacklisted
(pulled from /var/log/kern.log after waiting and then power cycling to boot
with blacklisted again).

Bug#962014: emacs-gtk: ansi-term does not resize when GUI frame is resized by window manager

2020-06-01 Thread Stephen Paul Weber
Package: emacs-gtk
Version: 1:26.1+1-3.2+deb10u1
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

When I run emacs-gtk or emacs-lucid (whether in daemon mode or not, and I have
tried under many different window managers, including gnome and lxde) the
included ansi-term function does not detect when a GUI frame is resized by, eg,
dragging on a corner with the mouse. Doing any window-resizing using emacs
keybindings (even popping up helm or similar) fixes the problem temporarily.

Reproduction on a default install of emacs-gtk, Debian stable (no custom emacs
configuration):

1. Run emacs
2. M-x ansi-term RET
3. echo $COLUMNS
4. Resize the frame using window manager controls
5. echo $COLUMNS
6. Observe that the number is unchanged even though the frame size has changed

Discussions with at least one PopOS user indicate that the above works for them,
so this may be Debian-specific somehow, but of course there are many other
factors.

Bug#847442: gnome-software says 'Failed to obtain authentication.'

2020-05-23 Thread Stephen Paul Weber
Package: gnome-software
Version: 3.30.6-5
Followup-For: Bug #847442

Dear Maintainer,

I believe I have the same issue. After installing `gnome-software` when I try
to install anything it does not prompt for password and simply says "you do not
have permission to install software".

I am not running under a full GNOME environment, but nevertheless policykit and
packagekit and dbus are running, if that is relevant.

Running gnome-software as root from a terminal works, but using the menu
launcher does not, and of course if I run it as root then other features are
not quite right (such as the "launch" button on installed applications).

Bug#949606: conky-all: cmus_* variables not recognized

2020-01-22 Thread Stephen Paul Weber
Package: conky-all
Version: 1.10.8-1+b1
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

After installing conky-all, I read the manpage. It clearly lists many
variables beginning "cmus_" as a way to report music playback
information for package cmus. I have package cmus installed as well.
However, when using these variables in my conky config (or on command
line as "conky -t '${cmus_aaa}'" etc) I get an error message "unknown
variable '$cmus_aaa'" for any $cmus_* that I try.

Perhaps the package is not built with cmus support? If not, I would
prefer that be added (since this is the *-all package) but in worst case
at least the manpage would hopefully not list unsupported variables.

Thanks so much for your time.

Bug#922555: android-sdk: should allow openjdk-8-jdk-headless

2019-02-17 Thread Stephen Paul Weber
Package: android-sdk
Version: 25.0.0+8
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

When trying to install android-sdk on sid I find that it depends on a
jdk, but openjdk-8-jdk-headless (available in sid) is not in the list.
This means that even if I wish to use openjdk 8, openjdk 11 is pulled in
and made default instead.

libdrm-nouveau2:amd64 (2.4.74-1, 2.4.95-1~bpo9+1)

The libdrm-nouveau2 and related seem suspect, especially coming from
backports.

Confirmed. I downgraded libdrm-nouveau2 to the non-bpo version and then
went through the pain of getting my system back to a consistent state. Kodi
now runs without issue once again.

Bug#919627: kodi: Segfault at startup on computer that has been working with Kodi

2019-01-17 Thread Stephen Paul Weber
Package: kodi
Version: 2:17.1+dfsg1-3
Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,

I have been running kodi on this system under Debian 9 for at least a
year with no issue. Today, it will not run, either under the user I
normally run it as, or my user, either in standalone mode or as a window
on my normal LXDE desktop. It segfaults during startup and I never even
see the Kodi UI. Included here is the debug log file it manages to
write before crashing:

Bug#909152: libreoffice: Google Drive file listing fails with "General input/output error"

2018-09-18 Thread Stephen Paul Weber

Package: libreoffice
Version: 1:5.2.7-1+deb9u4
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

After installing libreoffice and libreoffice-gnome I tried to use the
"open remote files" option and use my Google Drive account. It did log
in (Google emails me to say so) but instead of a files listing I get
"General input/output error"

This has previously been reported to upstream:
https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=117271 but in fact
it works in upstream's version so they closed it and suggested reporting
to Ubuntu, which was done:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libreoffice/+bug/1754400 and
it seems they found a fix for their version:

after we explicitly enabled the google drive API for the project that
holds the API key used in libreoffice (it was not enabled previously)

From this I infer that distribution packages of libreoffice are using

their own Google API credentials different from those of upstream, and
that an option needs to be enabled on these credentials to allow Google
Drive access. The rest of the comments on the Ubuntu bug are about 2FA
issues which are a different problem not related to this (my account has
no 2FA enabled).

Do you have a python traceback in the log?

Unfortunately, no. The above message is all that appears in the log. The
webpage says

Social Network Login Failure

An error occurred while attempting to login via your social network
account.

So I assume something in the app is catching the exception and only logging
the message, not the traceback, before rendering this page.

Bug#904520: python-django-hyperkitty: Deleting thread causes Server Error (500)

2018-07-24 Thread Stephen Paul Weber
Package: python-django-hyperkitty
Version: 1.1.4-4~bpo9+2
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

As a superuser on the Django app, going to
/mailman3/hyperkitty/list/.../thread/.../ there is a "Delete this thread"
option in the right-hand sidebar. Clicking this option results in a page that
says Server Error (500) which can only be got rid of by issuing

sudo systemctl restart mailman3-web

After which the application works as expected again (and the thread is indeed
deleted).

Bug#904500: mailman3-web: OpenID account connection fails (requires ?next=)

2018-07-24 Thread Stephen Paul Weber
Package: mailman3-web
Version: 0+20170523-14~bpo9+1
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

When enabling the OpenID login option, by uncommenting this line in
/etc/mailman3/mailman-web.py

'allauth.socialaccount.providers.openid',

OpenID logins work for the Mailman3 web interface as expected. However, when
visiting /mailman3/accounts/social/connections/ to add a second "Account
Connections" I get an error after the OpenID flow completes. The error in the
log is:

Verifying return_to arguments: Parameter next not in return_to URL

And, sure enough, if I visit
/mailman3/accounts/social/connections/?next=/mailman3/accounts/social/connections/
 everything works as expected.

Bug#874795: mnemonicode: Migrate to updated upstream

2017-09-09 Thread Stephen Paul Weber
Package: mnemonicode
Severity: wishlist

Dear Maintainer,

The currently used upstream for this package is gone (which is why the
homepage link goes to archive.org) -- I suggest to use my upstream
https://github.com/singpolyma/mnemonicode which I maintain and contains
some fixes and new features already.

Thanks.

Bug#874263: audacity: Sound playback is distorted or clipped

2017-09-04 Thread Stephen Paul Weber
Package: audacity
Version: 2.1.2-2
Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,

Audacity playback sounds distorted, almost as though it is clipping,
when the audio file contains louder sounds. Exporting the audio from
Audacity to WAV and playing through VLC or other players, it sounds
fine, so the data is not clipped itself, just sounds like it during
playback.

Bug#872380: ITP: pocket-home -- a simple menu for mobile devices

2017-08-16 Thread Stephen Paul Weber

Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist

After discussions at Debconf17, it was suggested that I should package for
Debian the pocket-home program that forms the lightweight home menu of the
pocketCHIP device. It is GPL3+ and the most maintained upstream is
.

This package is already useful on the pocketCHIP (which runs Debian) but
would be useful on other low-power, low-resolution, touch-friendly devices
as well.

It is my intention not only to maintain this package, but also to work with
upstream on improvements as they are discovered to make this program more
useful on other target devices.

Bug#872300: Patch to create reportbug-gtk package

2017-08-15 Thread Stephen Paul Weber

Package: reportbug
Tags: patch

Dear Maintainer,

Currently, default desktop installs of Debian come with a non-functioning
menu item for reportbug. This is because reportbug cannot sensibly depend
on GUI libraries (or else all manner of GUI nonsense would be pulled in on
servers!) and desktop install tasks cannot sensibly depend on
seemingly-random libraries that happen to enable the reportbug GTK+ UI but
would seem out of place without context.

This patch implements the solution proposed on #842018 -- namely, that the
desktop file and icon be split out into a seperate package named
reportbug-gtk. This package *can* sensibly depend on the needed GUI
libraries, since it is not a standard priority package and will not need to
be installed on servers. Additionally, desktop install tasks *can* sensibly
depend on a package named reportbug-gtk, as it will be suitably clear what
the purpose of the dependency is.

This is my first submission of this nature to Debian, and I may have failed
to follow some established social or technical best-pracises. Please let me
know if I should be going about this another way, or any other feedback you
have.

This package contains the desktop file and icon, and depends on
libraries needed to have that desktop file function to launch the GTK+
UI. This package is suitable for being included in desktop environment
install tasks.

Bug#842018: reportbug-gtk

2017-08-09 Thread Stephen Paul Weber
‎> I believe that the gtk support of reportbug should be separated in

Suggests:. A‎lso moving the desktop entry to that package so it won't confuse

That seems like a good compromise to me. Even if the `reportbug-gtk` package
was just the desktop file and dependencies it would at least work to eliminate
confusion.

python3-gi-cairo and gir1.2-vte-2.91 should fix it for you. Hopefully this

2017-07-12 Thread Stephen Paul Weber
Package: reportbug

Followup-For: Bug #864157

Dear Maintainer,

I also had this problem after installing Strech from CD with LXDE desktop
environment. Reportbug is in the menu, but selecting it appears to do nothing.
If running `reportbug --ui gtk2` from the terminal I get the same error as OP.

Installing python3-gi-cairo caused reportbug to switch error messages to
recommend I install gir1.2-vte-2.91 also. With both installed, now the GTK+ UI
works.

I suggest these two packages be included in default installs, at the very
least.

Bug#868196: guvcview: Capture freeze when using "Raw camera input" codec

2017-07-12 Thread Stephen Paul Weber
Package: guvcview
Version: 2.0.4+debian-1+b1
Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,

Today I upgraded from Ubuntu 14.04 to Debian Stretch. guvcview,
which I use extensively for recording video, seems to have a regression.
Previously, when I selected "Raw camera input" from the "video codec"
options in this program, it would happily write the MJPEG from my webcam
(Logitech C930e) to disk. Now when I select this option, any attempt to
record hangs the application.

Using the default codec (MPEG4-ASP) does work for now, so the program is
usable, but at some degraded video quality of course.

Bug#832132: /etc/init.d/radicale start does not work

2016-07-23 Thread Stephen Paul Weber
> Did you edit /etc/radicale/config and /etc/default/radicale?

Yes. I enabled in the defaults (though in my experience with other packages
since moving to jessie, systemd tends to ignore /etc/defaults in many of them).
I am fairly certain this is a regression in my setup and that it used to start
fine.

Possibly. Which would you suggest trying to install in this case?

Bug#832132: /etc/init.d/radicale start does not work

2016-07-22 Thread Stephen Paul Weber

Package: radicale

If I run `radicale -d` as root myself, it works fine. But if I run
`/etc/init.d/radicale start` as root, it claims to be using a systemd
service file and then does nothing. I cannot find said systemd service file
-- can it be that it was not created and so that is why it is not starting?

Bug#826657: VLC does not inhibit xfce4-power-manager

Using xfce4-power-manager under LXDE on jessie, with both the "disable

the screen still blanks while watching full-screen VLC video and

Disabling screen blank in xfce4-power-manager temporarily while watching

Bug#820628: Menu item just opens terminal

2016-04-10 Thread Stephen Paul Weber

Package: vim-common
Version: 2:7.4.488-7

Under LXDE there is a menu icon (created by
/usr/share/applications/vim.desktop) with the vim icon, but when I click it
it just opens a new terminal (vim does not launch in that terminal).

It seems not very useful to put in an icon to a graphical menu to launch
non-graphical version of vim (I have only `vim` installed, not gvim or
anything), but if others want to keep the icon then at least it should open
vim and not only a terminal, I think.

Thanks.

Bug#816300: imagemagick: Desktop file does not open the Imagemagick application

Imagemagick provides a desktop file for the display command that is supposed to
show the menu of commands you can see in the screenshot on the package tracker.

Unfortunately, from the menu in XFCE nothing happens.

This bug also affects me on LXDE.

Additionally, it seems there are two desktop files installed for different
versions of the command (one provided by this package, and one provided by
a dependency of this package (imagemagick-6.q16) -- so there are two
identical-looking icons in the menu, neither of which work.

Unfortunately, there is no obvious way to file a bug from the URL used:

I agree. A button to run `reportbug xscreensaver` or similar might be nice,
but I understand maintainer's concern about this encouraging duplicate

This, however, is a reportbug/debbugs issue generally and probably not as

Bug#820214: [Pkg-xfce-devel] Bug#820214: Move xfce4-panel from Depends to Recommends?

2016-04-06 Thread Stephen Paul Weber

What if it Reccomends the correct version and Conflicts all other
versions?

Except that's something which needs to be ok for *all* packages building
against xfce4-panel, not just orage.

How do you mean? Would they not be build against (and thus Depend) the same
version that we do not Conflict and thus be compatible?

Bug#820214: [Pkg-xfce-devel] Bug#820214: Move xfce4-panel from Depends to Recommends?

2016-04-06 Thread Stephen Paul Weber

I wasn't really aware of anyone using orage outside of Xfce.

I am using it on LXDE, since it is the best lightweight calendar I can find.

we had multiple changes in the way plugin and panel interact, so we enforce
a hard dependency on the panel version the plugin was built with. I'm not
sure you can do that with a recommends

Hmm. So really what would be ideal would be "if xfce4-panel is installed,
it MUST be this version. Or it may be not installed"?

What if it Reccomends the correct version and Conflicts all other versions?
I think maybe that would do it?

Bug#820214: Move xfce4-panel from Depends to Recommends?

2016-04-06 Thread Stephen Paul Weber

Package: orage
Version: 4.10.0-1

Currently orage depends on xfce4-panel, however the program runs very nicely
on other desktop environments without running xfce4-panel at all. Of course
you do not get the panel integration the same way, but a tray icon does
appear and all other features work.

Would it be possible to downgrade the dependency to Reccomend or similar?

Thanks,

Bug#745027: Missing dependencies

2016-04-05 Thread Stephen Paul Weber
Debian stable users will start reporting bugs for really old releases of
vdirsyncer on my issue tracker. And while Debian's documentation may have
made this situation extremely clear, apparently nobody reads it. This is
already happening with other software.

Hmm. That is very inconsiderate of such users. I would expect users who
know how to report bugs to be better educated about where to report them
(that is, not to report to upstreams, for example).

Because of this I think having vdirsyncer in Debian Sid only would be
a better idea.

That is very sad. Hopefully I will be able to use the sid package as
a basis for a backport for my users.

Bug#745027: Missing dependencies

2016-04-05 Thread Stephen Paul Weber

I suspect that if vdirsyncer makes its way into stable before 1.0, it
essentially means I'm forced into long-term support of whichever release is in
stable. However, ideally I'd like to only support the latest release of
vdirsyncer.

To be clear: this is only true if you are the Debian maintainer for
vdirsyncer. If someone else is the maintainer (as, reading this thread, it
seems is the intent) then it is *their* job to backport any relevant
bugfixes and provide any support to Debian stable users. As upstream, you
only ever have to support official versions that you provide, of course, and
not Debian versions.

I'm really excited to see this packaged! This is a very useful tool that
I would like to deploy on more of my systems.

2016-04-04 Thread Stephen Paul Weber

Package: duplicity
Version: 0.6.06-2~bpo50+2

my backup without getting an python exception:

I just tried out the steps you gave on 0.7.06 and it does not reproduce for
me. Hopefully it is fixed? This version is in jessie backports if you are
willing to try it.

Bug#783395: libpam-yubico: Segfault when using Yubikey for authentication prevents login

I had this problem also. The bug is not in the pam module, it seems, but in
the client. Installing libykclient3_2.6-1_amd64.deb from oldstable fixes
this issue for me, but upgrading to libykclient3_2.14-1_amd64.deb from sid
does not. So this is a regression in libykclient3 since oldstable.

Strangely, the segfault does not happen when I use yubikey with sudo. Also,
when I use with pwauth under gdb with thread debugging enabled, then also it
does not happen. But under gdb without thread debugging or without gdb then
I still get the segfault with pwauth on affected versions. So maybe it is
a race condition of some kind?

I am also affected by this bug. Will try the suggested udev-rules

2016-02-01 Thread Stephen Paul Weber
Package: iceweasel
Version: 38.6.0esr-1~deb8u1
Followup-For: Bug #798988

launch it with:

(process:3226): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_slice_set_config: assertion 'sys_page_size

Illegal instruction

I installed iceweasel-dbg and ran under gdb which yields:

(process:2684): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_slice_set_config: assertion 'sys_page_size
== 0' failed
warning: GDB can't find the start of the function at 0x6bada978.

GDB is unable to find the start of the function at 0x6bada978
and thus can't determine the size of that function's stack frame.
This means that GDB may be unable to access that stack frame, or
the frames below it.
This problem is most likely caused by an invalid program counter or
stack pointer.
However, if you think GDB should simply search farther back
from 0x6bada978 for code which looks like the beginning of a
function, you can increase the range of the search using the `set
heuristic-fence-post' command.

Program received signal SIGILL, Illegal instruction.

Bug#594684: Segmentation fault X-server 1.15

Did you find your video got faster with the patch?

I'm on jessie running X 1.16 and have the same experience as others here.
Without siliconmotion driver works but is slow. With the longsoon.patch
I get funny video output (assuming it's wrong resolution) -- with above
attached xorg.conf put into /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/00-lemote.conf then
X works but it seems not faster (maybe even slower) -- my test is open an
LXTerminal and drag it around. Very repaint-y and slow.

Bug#811035: Plugin does not work with latest Google APIs

2016-01-14 Thread Stephen Paul Weber

Package: claws-mail-gdata-plugin
Version: 3.11.1-3

This version of the plugin asks for the Google account username and
password, and then does not work at all. Upstream tells me this is because
Google now requires all auth to be done using OAuth2 and the
username+password auth is no longer supported at all.

I have verified that the version of this plugin packaged in testing is
functional. Perhaps that version of the plugin (or the associated version
of claws+plugins) could be backported? It would be really helpful if this
plugin worked on my stable systems.

The version from testing cannot be installed as-is on stable systems because
of the declared dependency on a newer dbus, which pulls in libsystemd0 and
breaks my environment.
