Bug#725434: workaround for injected TMPDIR

2022-10-06 Thread David Schmitt
This also affects sbuild. To avoid the issue, I've added the following to
my ~/.sbuildrc:

$external_commands = {
"chroot-setup-commands" => [
'runuser -u sbuild -- mkdir -v -m 1777 -p "/tmp/user/1000"',
],
};

Reading through the docs a bit, I realize that this request should go
to the linux-firmware.git repo instead.

To support the RTL8761B bluetooth chips from realtek, please add the
files as described in

I can confirm that it enables the device for me.

Hi Simon & folx,

thanks for preparing those patches. I applied both to a local compile and

expected several. Thanks a lot for preparing this!

The newest versions of youtube-dl don't appear to have a fix for this bug.
Can you please provide the output of running youtube-dl with the --verbose
flag, while trying to convert the video?

I've posted my output from the version currently in testing (and sid) on
the upstream report about this:

There is also https://github.com/rg3/youtube-dl/issues/4012 , which is
basically a duplicate of this and has the same messages.

Bug#767593: timedatectl: does not notice corrupted zoneinfo files

2014-11-01 Thread David Schmitt

Package: systemd
Version: 215-5+b1
Severity: minor

Hi,

due to local problems, my zoneinfo file was corrupted (content replaced
with garbage). Setting the timezone with timedatectl set-timezone lead
to the timezone being set to UTC, but using the correct name.

root@zion:/etc# timedatectl # correct here.
Local time: Sam 2014-11-01 11:54:45 CET
Universal time: Sam 2014-11-01 10:54:45 UTC
RTC time: Sam 2014-11-01 10:54:45
   Time zone: CET (CET, +0100)
 NTP enabled: yes
NTP synchronized: yes
 RTC in local TZ: no
  DST active: no
Last DST change: DST ended at
  Son 2014-10-26 02:59:59 CEST
  Son 2014-10-26 02:00:00 CET
Next DST change: DST begins (the clock jumps one hour forward) at
  Son 2015-03-29 01:59:59 CET
  Son 2015-03-29 03:00:00 CEST
root@zion:/etc# ls -la timezone localtime
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 25 Nov  1 11:50 localtime ->
../usr/share/zoneinfo/CET

-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 4 Nov 1 11:50 timezone
root@zion:/etc# timedatectl set-timezone Europe/Vienna
root@zion:/etc# date
Sam Nov 1 10:54:56 UTC 2014
root@zion:/etc# timedatectl # "valid", but not what's intended
Local time: Sam 2014-11-01 10:55:01 UTC
Universal time: Sam 2014-11-01 10:55:01 UTC
RTC time: Sam 2014-11-01 10:55:01
   Time zone: Europe/Vienna (UTC, +)
 NTP enabled: yes
NTP synchronized: yes
 RTC in local TZ: no
  DST active: n/a
root@zion:/etc# ls -la timezone localtime

Given that zoneinfo files have an obvious magic number and the garbage
file hadn't one, it'd be really great if timedatectl could do basic
sanity checks before loading the file and creating an "invalid"
configuration.

this wheezy desktop is joined to a current samba4 domain on a testing host.

wbinfo --pam-logon works using cleartext auth, wbinfo -K (and others

Bug#715141: apt_all update cronjob creates error mails when testing and unstable are not in the apt sources

2013-07-06 Thread David Schmitt

Package: munin-plugins-core
Version: 2.0.6-4+deb7u1
Severity: minor

Hi,

when using the apt_all plugin the cronjob creates the following error
messages, when only stable is configured:

root@testagent:~# /usr/share/munin/plugins/apt_all update 7200 1

Hit http://security.debian.org wheezy/updates Release

This is because the plugin unconditionally tries to dist-upgrade to all
values of @releases = ("stable", "testing","unstable"), which cannot be
configured from the outside.

This also applies to 2.0.14-1~bpo70+1 and 2.0.16 seems to contain this too.

It would be nice to replace this with something like this:

my @releases = split(",", ($ENV{MUNIN_APT_RELEASES} ||
"stable,testing,unstable"))

which would allow easy configuration from the environment and plugin-conf.d.

Consequently, monodevelop doesn't load the NUnit plugin and, for

Symlinking those four to the respective file in libnunit2.6-cil lets the

You only would have storeconfigs set on the puppetmaster itself, and the
puppetmaster package depends on puppetmaster-common which Suggests:

If I put storeconfigs=true into the [master] section, puppet agent
complains about collections:

Again, you should not put storeconfigs=true in the puppet.conf on

installed the suggested Rails package.

Why bother with sub-command specific config sections at all, then?

Hi,

unfortunately some programs (like gpsd) need the module and others not. So there
is no proper way to decide if the module should be black listed or not. It is up
to the admin to decide what to do as there is no way to handle this
automatically. In Ubuntu the module was blacklisted but the blacklisting was
afaik removed as too many gpsd users complained about it. The proper way would
be to fix the module to allow access to the device from several programs and in
various modes. Or the real proper fix - ask Garmin to fix their USB mess.

Well, running "gpsbabel -i garmin" as root seems to be a good indicator
of administrator's choice to me. But at least the error message from 1.3
gives a much better picture of the situation than the non-committal from
1.4. It be great to have that re-instated.

Bug#625244: gpsbabel conflicts with garmin_gps kernel module

2011-05-02 Thread David Schmitt

Package: gpsbabel
Version: 1.4.2-2
Severity: normal

Hi,

I tried to get gpsbabel to read the data from my Garmin EDGE 305 unit. This
only worked after removing the "garmin_gps" kernel module and running
gpsbabel

as root (or manually adding a udev rule).

Please see http://www.gpsbabel.org/os/Linux_Hotplug.html for details.
It'd be

great if wheezy would support using the edge305 out-of-the-box.

Here some tries when trying to access the edge with the module loaded:

david@debian:~$ sudo gpsbabel -i garmin -f usb:-1
Claim interfaced failed: could not claim interface 0: Device or resource
busy

david@debian:~$ sudo su - david -c 'gpsbabel -t -i garmin -f
/dev/ttyUSB0 -o gpx -F /home/david/out.gpx'

[ERROR] GPS_Packet_Read: Timeout. No data received.
[ERROR] A301_Get: Error transferring tracks

1.3.5 from lenny at least gave a sensible error message:

david@debian:~$ sudo dpkg -i Downloads/gpsbabel_1.3.5-1.1_amd64.deb
dpkg: warning: downgrading gpsbabel from 1.4.2-2 to 1.3.5-1.1.

david@debian:~$ sudo strace -o /tmp/trace gpsbabel -i garmin -f usb:-1
usb_set_configuration failed, probably because kernel driver 'garmin_gps'
is blocking our access to the USB device.
For more information see http://www.gpsbabel.org/os/Linux_Hotplug.html

And thus it works:

david@debian:~$ sudo rmmod garmin_gps
david@debian:~$ sudo strace -o /tmp/trace gpsbabel -i garmin -f usb:-1

Personally I think the profusion of tiny packages is not all that nice.
It would be better to solve that problem (that the administrator should
be able to choose whether to run the daemon) with a debconf question.

I would agree with Kurt's comments about the separation between
packages.

Currently, git-daemon is in git-core. I don't think a debconf prompt for
every installer of git-core would be a good idea. Most people are only
going to be interested in the client.

As a sysadmin I'd prefer a git-core/git-remote-access-methods split
where the former contains all "client" stuff and the latter may post a
debconf question which services to run and which daemonizer to use.

But I'm just a single sysadmin and programmer.

The same behaviour happens without any files in the cwd.

Bug#492506: powder segfaults on start of game

Hi again :-/

I now tried it with the last version, 104, which did work on this machine.

Sadly though, the segfault happens at exactly the same point. This suggests
that some other update has killed powder. I have no idea what, though. Sorry
for the bother.

Bug#442395: xserver-xorg-core: hitting certain operation in digikam busy-locks xserver

2007-11-20 Thread David Schmitt
Hi!

Meanwhile I upgraded my PC to a Pentium Q6600 and one of the new Radeonhd
cards. The problem still exists, but now the system is strong enoguh to live
through it. also I could get a full backtrace with all symbol infos.

After killing digikam, the system returns to normal state within 10 seconds,
without killling digikam, the X server remains unresponsive, but not
completely dead.

Bug#442395: xserver-xorg-core: hitting certain operation in digikam busy-locks xserver [Denial of Service]

2007-09-15 Thread David Schmitt
Package: xserver-xorg-core
Version: 2:1.3.0.0.dfsg-12
Severity: normal

Hi!

When using digikam's 'Aspect Ratio Crop' function, the xserver goes to
100% CPU and stops responding to input (only mouse moves, no screen
refreshes, no key strokes / clicks accepted). Ctrl+Alt+F1 still works to
get to a text console, although it takes a while.

I could reproduce that also with the vesa driver and only a xterm and
digikam running.

Even when killing digikam, the xserver doesn't recover. Killing and
restarting the xserver returned the machine into a normal state.

I tried to attach a gdb to the locked xserver but only got cryptic error
messages about gdb internal problems. Since I'm currently with only a
single machine, it was not possible for me to obtain better debugging, as
running X from gdb locked the display.

I also tried with the current experimental packages, but the bug persists.

Is there something else I can try to gather more information for you?

Regards, David

Bug#293556: gnupg: sometimes --refresh-keys leaves empty pubring.gpg when

Hi!

Today I experienced this while ^C-ing gnupg --refresh-keys:
~/.gnupg/pubkey.gpg was empty and ~/.gnupg/pupkey.gpg~ contained a valid
and current (i.e. containing the already refreshed keys) copy of my
public key ring.

This seems to only happen if gnupg had modified the keyring immediately
before the interrupt.

Strangly enough, the responsible function rename_tmp_file from
g10/keyring.c seems to do the Right Thing:

remove pubkey.gpg~
rename pubkey.gpg.tmp pubkey.gpg
chmod pubkey.gpg

Indeed, .purple/accels contained exactly one non-comment line:
(gtk_accel_path "/Tools/Mute Sounds" "c")

Removing that definitly fixed the original issue.

Since I'm sure I didn't add it manually to the file, some part of
pidgin/purple seems to have problems reading its own output.

Thanks for the hint!

Hi!

When trying to rename a buddy with the 'Alias...' context menu option or
by double-clicking on the Buddy, one cannot enter a lower case 'c'
character.

I could neither find another character that doesn't work, nor another
place where the 'c' doesn't work.

Bug#415899: facter: missing dependency on net-tools for ifconfig

Dear Maintainer!

facter uses ifconfig for some checks. ifconfig is part of net-tools,
which is not essential. A Depends is therefore neccessary.

The obvious workaround is to manually install the net-tools package.

Thanks, DavidS

Bug#414282: puppet: logrotate config suboptimal

2007-03-10 Thread David Schmitt
Package: puppet
Version: 0.22.0-1
Severity: normal
Tags: patch

Hi *!

There are several improvements to the logrotate config at
/etc/logrotate.d/puppet possible:

1) the init script do not know a condrestart action. Please just use
restart for that.

2) Adding the 'compress' option to /etc/logrotate.d/puppet reduced the
amount of stored logfiles dramatically. This is especially neccessary
when using the export/collect features as the rails.log easily reached
500+ MB in a week of normal usage.

3) Also specifying "rotate 4" would limit the number of kept logfiles.
Currently they are kept indefinitly.

Bug#412868: puppet vim syntax hilighting

2007-02-28 Thread David Schmitt
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Package: puppet
Version: 0.22.1-1
Severity: wishlist
Tags: patch

Hi Matthew!

I found out how the puppet vim syntax highlighting can be installed:

(16:25:35) The topic for #debian-vim is: Maintenance of vim-related
Debian packages | http://alioth.debian.org/projects/pkg-vim/
(16:26:24) Rhonda: jamessan: So registering it for a filename match or
line match isn't really offered yet, do I read that correct?
(16:26:54) DavidS: hi! how can a debian package add to vim's syntax
highlighting? I guess the syntax file goes to
/usr/share/vim/vim70/syntax, but how/where do I teach vim to detect the
filetype?
(16:27:30) Rhonda: DavidS: The question preceeded you. :P
(16:27:54) DavidS: me too!
(16:27:56) DavidS: ;)
(16:28:01) jamessan: yeah. that requires modification of a single file
by all packages, which is more difficult. the best option is to leave
instructions for the user in README.Debian that tells them something
along the lines of "put 'autocmd BufRead,BufNewFile *.foo set ft=foo' in
your .vimrc or read up in ':he new-filetype' for other ways to recognize
the filetype"
(16:28:36) jamessan: actually
(16:28:40) DavidS: someone recommended to "simply add a "# :set
syntax=puppet" to each file"
(16:28:49) Rhonda: jamessan: Can't that somehow be done through an
include directory and some runtimepath magic or such?
(16:28:55) jamessan: you could possibly use
/usr/share/vim/addons/ftdetect/foo.vim
(16:29:11) Rhonda: DavidS: I usually put "# :vim:ft=puppet:" into them.
(16:30:00) Rhonda: But having it directly done is more convenient, yes.
(16:30:02) jamessan: Rhonda: detecting filetype by filename can easily
be done via the ftdetect directory. doing the same by file *contents*
isn't as easy
(16:30:24) Rhonda: That reminds me, we need to add filetype detection
for the ldapvi temporary files to have them the ldif syntax loaded. ;)
(16:30:38) jamessan: zack could explain the vim-registry stuff if you
want to use that :)
(16:30:41) Rhonda: Ah, ftdetect - cool. :)
(16:31:26) DavidS: it's just "au! BufRead,BufNewFile *.pp
setfiletype puppet"
(16:31:47) jamessan: well, without the !
(16:32:34) Rhonda: Ah, then it can be done through ftdetect directory.
(16:32:59) DavidS: to /usr/share/vim/addons/ftdetect/puppet.vim and
puppet.vim (containing the syntax stuff) to
/usr/share/vim/vim70/syntax/puppet.vim ?

Kudos to #debian-vim on oftc.net

It'd be really great if you could include that. To summarise:

just "au BufRead,BufNewFile *.pp setfiletype puppet" to
/usr/share/vim/addons/ftdetect/puppet.vim and ext/vim/puppet.vim to
/usr/share/vim/vim70/syntax/puppet.vim.

:help ftdetect should give help from within vim.

If you don't come around to it, I'll take a look at it after my
holidays.

The apache2 init script should use log_failure_msg instead of

I have installed

kpilot_3.5.5.dfsg.1-3~sune1_i386.deb
libkcal2b_3.5.5.dfsg.1-3~sune1_i386.deb
libkdepim1a_3.5.5.dfsg.1-3~sune1_i386.deb
libktnef1_3.5.5.dfsg.1-3~sune1_i386.deb

from that location and was able to sync my palm with this kpilot. It has
synchronized the calendar and the addressbook. While I have not checked every
entry, it seemed functional on those I checked. I do not use any other
conduits.

I have installed the two packages, attached my palm t|x and hotsynced. After
answering tree expected conflicts, the hotsync proceeded and a quick look
shows that the calender entries which went missing with the last version
(all) are now back, including changes I did afterwards to my korganizer.

Hi!

The problem seems to be in the "parse_ln" function of /etc/init.d/xendomains

I could workaround the problem by changing the numbers 17 and 18 in the "cut"

Using this patch i have no further BUG traces.

daniel_hozac of #vserver recommended this shell fragment to repair
missing vserver patch pieces in xen:

Bug#397021: update-grub: gets hypervisor path wrong

2006-11-04 Thread David Schmitt
Package: grub
Version: 0.97-18
Severity: normal

Dear maintainer!

I have installed xen-hypervisor-3.0.3-1-i386 3.0.3-0-2 and got following
stanza in /boot/grub/menu.lst:

title Xen 3.0.3-1-i386 / Debian GNU/Linux, kernel
2.6.18-1-xen-vserver-686
root(hd0,0)
kernel /boot/xen-3.0.3-1-i386.gz
module /vmlinuz-2.6.18-1-xen-vserver-686 root=/dev/mapper/system-root
ro console=tty0
module /initrd.img-2.6.18-1-xen-vserver-686
savedefault

The problem here is that (hd0,0) is /boot, therefore the "/boot" in the
kernel line is too much.

As a workaround you might want to add the line

Bug#343440: Resuming from suspend to RAM with 2.6.14-5 fails significantly more often than with 2.6.14-4

Hi Thomas!

In preparation of the upcoming etch release, would you please

Newer kernels now have a user mode software suspend (package uswsusp) which

also.

Additionally if the problems persist, please detail how far your laptop can
resume.

Hi Marco!

In preparation of the upcoming etch release, would you please
test if either 2.6.17-9 from testing or 2.6.18-3 from unstable
fixes your problem with your USB devices after a APM suspendresume cycle?

Additionally you might want to look into the hibernate tool (package of the
same name) to arrange around the suspend/resume for unmounting / removing /
disabling of devices which are not "suspend compatible".

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-

Hi Frisco!

To facilitate bug-hygiene, I'd like to have this bug report closed, since the
main problem seemed to be a misunderstanding in the differences of hdparm -i
vs -I. If you have specific problems with either hdparm's options or your IDE
drivers representation of reality, I'd ask you to file new bug reports with
the specific pertaining information either to hdparm (regarding the
commandline switches) or linux-2.6 (regarding problems caused by the driver's
different view of reality vs the disk's actual values).

Thank you for your cooperation!

Bug#326494: error building bluetooth for K6; build successful for K7

Hi Brian!

In preparation of the upcoming etch release, would you please
test if either 2.6.17-9 from testing or 2.6.18-3 from unstable
fixes your problems building a kernel with K6+CONFIG_REGPARM? The current
default compiler is already gcc-4.1, so there are good chances that this
should work.

The easiest way to fix this is to hardcode the current version in the
dh_makeshlibs -V parameter. This is not binNMU safe.

Better with regards to binNMUs would be to use -V without parameter. This
would generate a 'libexiv2-0.10 (>= 0.10)' dependeny. I have no idea whether
that is tight enough.

Hi *!

Together with Lukas Fittl at the viennese BSP, we were able to narrow the
problem further down:

After removing patch #119, the problem didn't surface anymore.
