Bug#769946: upgrade-reports: auto-suspend after login (Wheezy-Jessie upgrade)

2014-11-17 Thread Edward J. Shornock
Package: upgrade-reports
Severity: normal

I did the upgrade a month or so ago but didn't have time to properly
troubleshoot the problem until now.

System:
Manufacturer: FUJITSU SIEMENS
Product Name: AMILO M 7400
Version: Rev.A

After upgrading an old laptop from Wheezy to Jessie, the laptop
automatically suspends to RAM shortly after login on a VT. It does not
matter whether the session is idle or not. Within XFCE, the laptop does
not automatically suspend to RAM. I found that switching from an X
session to a VT such as with CTRL-ALT-F1 also triggers this
auto-suspend action.

When systemd-logind is stopped the laptop does not autosuspend. After
setting HandleLidSwitch=ignore in /etc/systemd/logind.conf the laptop
no longer auto-suspends. I should note that pressing the laptop's lid
switch switches the display off, so this seems to be a case of
systemd-logind incorrectly reading the switch's state. Other than this
relatively minor issue, the move to Jessie was rather uneventful. Things
just worked.

Please let me know if I can provide any further info.

Bug#729203: Intent to package FFmpeg

 Strange, as it builds fine with pbuilder.

 I just tried a jessie/amd64 chroot with cowbuilder and it builds fine for
 me.
 Does your cowbuilder mount /run/shm? Mine does:
 I: mounting /run/shm filesystem

 This might be the cause for 'sem_open: Function not implemented'.

This was a problem that I had while building with sbuild. I set the
profile to 'desktop' and the build failed with another error:

# Use faketime to make the build more binary reproducible.
faketime -f -m  dh_auto_build -a
shm_open: Bad address

This was resolved by removing eatmydata (#747078) as a command-prefix in
schroot.

$ faketime '1 day ago' /bin/date -u
Mon Sep 15 14:18:21 UTC 2014
$ eatmydata faketime '1 day ago' /bin/date -u
shm_open: Bad address

An issue was opened for this back in May at
https://github.com/wolfcw/libfaketime/issues/44 .

---

More on topic: Thanks for your work on bringing ffmpeg* back to Debian. :)
I mostly care about the ffmpeg binary since avconv is far from being a
drop-in replacement.

If the there can be only one stance remains with libav VS ffmpeg, this
user would prefer ffmpeg replacing libav.

Bug#747078: #747078: eatmydata: breaks faketime (and maybe others)

2014-09-16 Thread Edward J. Shornock
* Antonio Terceiro terce...@debian.org [12-05-2014 12:32 EEST]:
 hah, that's it, that chroot did have eatmydata configured as a
 command-prefix! I have now removed eaymydata usage, and I can narrow
 down the problem to:

 $ faketime +1day date

 $ eatmydata faketime +1day date
 shm_open: Bad address
 $ faketime +1day eatmydata date

 I can also reproduce that problem on my main system, so it is not
 specific to the chroot configuration.

I also had the same problem with eatmydata causing faketime to fail. I
built and installed an updated eatmydata from
http://anonscm.debian.org/cgit/users/mapreri-guest/pkg-libeatmydata.git
and faketime no longer fails.

 Does libguestfs still work for you when you also add ^sysv-rc to the

I just tested that and yes it does. I was able to update my

be good to add as well to the exclusions as well.

Thanks for all you do. :)

Please support multi-arch so that both i386 and amd64 binaries can be

Sorry about that, I didn't notice.

 Can you verify that the issue also exists with the aptitude 0.6.8.2-1

Yes, the problem can be seen with 0.6.8.2-1.2 as well.

 So I don't see how this works for you and how this can be a reguression.

Perhaps I just lucked out the time that it worked. In retrospect I
should have tried multiple times before claiming success with the wheezy
version. Maybe running within vbox made it act differently?

I can say that some of the tcg errors, such as the ones that can be
triggered when update-ca-certificates runs when emulating ARM, do not
fail consistently. Perhaps it's the same situation here?

Anyhow, sorry for the incorrect report.

 Hi Edward,
 thanks for your feedback!

No problem.

 That's from virt-manger itself. It's not the daemon's log (see either
 syslog or /var/log/libvirt/libvirtd.log).

I got the debug output from libvirt (it was sent to stderr) from these
runs but I didn't include it since (to me) it didn't show anything of
interest. I can provide it if it's decided that it might be useful. The
libvirt log (which I did not attach) was generated with
su -
service libvirt-bin stop
LIBVIRT_DEBUG=1 libvirtd 21 |tee virt.log

 No need to provide more feedback at this point. I'll try to reproduce
 with the version information you gave (won't happen in the near future
 unfortunately though).

OK. When/if it's decided that more info is needed I'll be happy to
provide it.

 I also wonder whenever this is intel-specific or not (my current machine is

 I'll try this at work today, where I have an intel machine but it is running

The PIII is the only Intel (and only 32bit) CPU I have access to.

FWIW (and this might be pretty asinine/ridiculous), I installed a 32bit Sid
(32bit
kernel and set to emulate 32bit) in Virtualbox and installed the 1.5
packages and I reproduced the crash there. I did the same thing with qemu
1.5 within a 32bit sid hosted by kvm. Reproduced again.

I realize that the qemu failure within vbox or kvm may not prove much of value,
but:

[..]

 When running from a debian package, the binary files in /usr/share/qemu are
 different from ones supplied by qemu. One of the main differences is the
 bios. You may try debian-compiled version with -L /path/to/qemu/build/pc-bios
 (there's pc-bios subdir in qemu sources with all that stuff). That might
 the problem. Note that just like with openbios, we don't have up-to-date
 seabios package, but this one is quite a bit more difficult due to #707454.

That seems to be the problem. I cannot reproduce the crash with the
qemu supplied bios files.

Thanks (as always) for your assistance.

(I'm removing the tags since this issue is seen in the debs only. Hopefully
this isn't a problem for end-users to do themselves.)

This potentially looks like a 32-bit userspace issue but only when qemu (1.4.0,

installed from debian packages. The version in Wheezy (1.1.2+dfsg-6) works fine.

to boot the kfreebsd iso: the guest crashed.

I built debs for the following git revision based using the debian

I *cannot* boot the 32bit kfreebsd iso on a 32bit host when using debs
built from the git revision referenced above.

I *can* boot the 64bit kfreebsd iso (downloaded from
http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/release/7.0.0/kfreebsd-amd64/iso-cd/debian-7.0.0-kfreebsd-amd64-netinst.iso)
using debs built from the git revision above.

To recap:

- The guest crashes with 1.5.0~rc0+dfsg-1 on a 32bit host.
- The guest crashes on a 32bit host with debs built from the git
  revision mentioned above.
- The 32bit guest crashes on a 64bit host with debs built from the git
  revision mentioned above.
- The 32bit guest does NOT crash on a 64bit host using the binaries in
  the source directory created with ./configure make (thanks for
  that tip (and the other tips), btw! It's handy to not have to make
  install each time I want to test something)
- The 64bit guest does not crash.
- The version in Wheezy (1.1.2+dfsg-6a) does not crash.

I haven't figured out yet what exactly is different when running from debs VS
git source.

 Oh. So it is guest crash, not qemu process on host crash. Please indicate
 as such in the subject.

I'll be sure to do so in the future.

 This is a known issue, I spent half a day pre-yesterday diagnosing it.
 Current upstream qemu git should be fine, after the following commit:

 commit 66e61b55f158ef5628e4c056dd2f233c9351a3f5
 Author: Aurelien Jarno aurel...@aurel32.net
 Date:   Wed May 8 22:36:39 2013 +0200

 tcg/optimize: fix setcond2 optimization

 When setcond2 is rewritten into setcond, the state of the destination
 temp should be reset, so that a copy of the previous value is not
 used instead of the result.

 You can revert just that commit and retry the test - it should fail as
 before.

To test this I did the following:
git clean -xdf
git reset --hard 47ec15cdd44877e553ed0bd0a16aea8a295dad62
./configure
make -j6
[WAIT]
x86_64-softmmu/qemu-system-x86_64 -m 256 -cdrom /path/to/kfreebsd/mini.iso
--enable-kvm

and the guest didn't crash.

I pulled the source to get back to revision
38ebb396c955ceb2ef7e246248ceb7f8bfe1b774.

Then I merged 5e773833688b49d8a3cce6c75dde8cdc1e0c7807 from
git://anonscm.debian.org/pkg-qemu/qemu.git to make packages with
fakeroot debian/rules binary. It crashes with the packages.

I see
   qemu-system-x86_64: pci_add_option_rom: failed to find romfile
efi-e1000.rom
but don't know if that matters. (I'm guessing it doesn't)

So at this point
- packaged = crash
- run from git source = works

It's definitely not a build-dependency issue since I didn't build in a
clean chroot as I normally would--I built these on my live system.

 Note that this happens only when you run something 32bit on a 64bit host,
 32bit on 32bit is unaffected.

  I also had this problem with 1.4.0. Booting the iso will fail both with
  and without KVM acceleration.

 1.4.0 had no this bug, so it must be something different.

It indeed looks like it's a different problem. Whatever I'm experiencing
(with this issue booting a kfreebsd iso) I could reproduce with the
1.4.0 packages. I didn't start testing from git until after 1.5.0 made
it to experimental.

 But at this point. 1.4 is mostly history, we should concentrate on getting
 1.5 out
 as soon as possible, with all the needed fixes, and, more important, on
 wheezy version which is in stable which will be used by most people.

Sounds like a good plan. I'm not sure that I remember correctly what works and
what doesn't
with 1.1.2 so I'll set up a testbed for my reports.

 This most likely is the same issue as in #707645, unless you

 Is ppc image (or userspace within) 32bit or 64bit?

I _think_ the PPC image/userspace is 32bit but to be honest I don't know
much at all about this arch.

With upstream git rev 38ebb396c955ceb2ef7e246248ceb7f8bfe1b774:

To clarify, I didn't build my own package. I built qemu with

./configure --audio-drv-list=alsa,oss,sdl,pa \

make install

Then ran qemu wit

/path/bin/qemu-system-x86_64 -machine accel=kvm:tcg \

During an attempted installation of Debian wheezy, the guest qemu
instance aborts with a segfault shortly after configuring how to
partition the guest's HDD.

The installation is started from an ISO I downloaded from
ftp://ftp.debian.org/debian/dists/wheezy/main/installer-powerpc/current/images/powerpc/netboot/mini.iso,
and I'm using the command-line of

I can reproduce the error with the packaged 1.5.0~rc0 and a

 Damn. I haven't noticed the most important thing.
 Your report is about 1.4 version. Please try the
 recently-uploaded 1.5.0~rc0 which includes the fix
 by Peter I mentioned in my previous mail. If that
 works, we know what the issue was. If it doesn't,
 it's another useful data point.

Unfortunately the tcg problem persists.

 So that appears to be 32/64bit conversion somewhere. PIII is 32bits,

This problem seems to have been resolved with 1.5.0.

fails in the guest with

Fatal trap 12: page fault while in kernel mode

(screenshot at http://imgur.com/M9iuJlX).

I also had this problem with 1.4.0. Booting the iso will fail both with
and without KVM acceleration.

I do not have this problem with a self-compiled qemu (git rev
66e61b55f158ef5628e4c056dd2f233c9351a3f5).

qemu installed from experimental can boot an already installed kfreebsd,
such as one from http://people.debian.org/~aurel32/qemu/. I
successfully installed kfreebsd with my self-compiled qemu and that
installed system could also be booted with the qemu from experimental.

 Later on you wrote:

 So that appears to be 32/64bit conversion somewhere. PIII is 32bits,
 and your original system is 64bit. That should be enough to reproduce.

Indeed. Since that launchpad thread hinted at it being a 64-bit issue I
wanted to brush the dust off of the PIII to test the theory. Since
that 2nd post of mine (RE: success on the PIII) I've done a bit more
testing and everything--so far--has worked on the 32bit system, though
I've not tried compiling anything yet.

At least at this point it appears to be a 64 VS 32 bit issue.

 After looking a bit more about this, it might be a trivial bug, -- there are
 other possible comparison codes in qemu than listed in that function, so it
 looks like it is actually possible to have that error without corruption.

That'd be nice. :)

  Unfortunately the failures are not consistent but they occur with java
  related things.

 Oh. Java-related things. This is actually, well, sort of expected. Java
 is heavily multithreaded, and qemu in TCG mode is not able to run
 multi-threaded
 apps. Some of multi-threaded apps work, but this is just due to luck, not
 by design. There are some areas in the code which just don't assume MT mode
 at all, so while one thread is modifying some memory area, another may be
 reading it, or modifying it differently -- there are a few races which
 sometimes gets resolved by a good luck, and more often fail.

Yes, I figured this could have been the reason, but I didn't think I
should make that call since this is wy over my head.

  Sometimes the postinst for ca-certificates-java succeeds. Sometimes it
  fails with http://paste.debian.net/hidden/72893826/.

 I see you're running something inside sbuild environment, but I've no idea
 how to do that. I'll try to learn how to set up sbuild, but that'll require
 some time, and wont be done in the near future. That's why I asked for steps
 to reproduce -- complete steps, including building the environment, --
 just a tiny howto, of a sort.

Oh, sorry. Perhaps
http://www.hellion.org.uk/blog/posts/foreign-chroots-with-schroot-and-qemu/
will suffice, but if not I can write-up something too.

   tcg fatal error

 This is the error you reported initially. It may be due to bug in code (not
 handling all
 conditionals), and may be due to the same multithreaded issue, when the
 opcode stream gets
 corrupt due to two or more threads racing for it. With the result being
 inconsistent,
 I think it is the latter.

Makes sense.

 There are some upstream changes past 1.4 (yes, that's 1.4 not 1.1 as will be
 in wheezy!)
 in an attempt to address this, but it's just the beginning, much more work
 needs to be
 done in this area. (1.4 is equally broken in this context).

 So, I'm afraid, that isn't easy and quick to fix...

I'll be happy to be a guinea pig/tester but code is out of my reach.

 There was a long thread (in a bugreport) on launchpad about all this
 multithreading issue
 in qemu-user, but somehow I can't find it now. I'll try to link it to this
 bugreport.

Bug#705164: gmpc-plugins: Metadat Handler uses outdated API

2013-04-11 Thread Edward J. Shornock
* Etienne Millon etienne.mil...@gmail.com [11-04-2013 10:41 EEST]:
 Hello,

 I'm afraid that this can't be fixed for wheezy.

That's fine, of course, and not unexpected. :) I'm sorry for reporting
this so late in the prep for Wheezy but just learned why I couldn't
access discogs.com for the last few months yesterday.

 The newer version of gmpc uses a new system based on libglyr to fetch
 lyrics, I'll upload a snapshot to experimental ASAP.

 For a workaround, you can disable the discogs plugin in Music -
 Preferences - Metadata Handler - uncheck DiscoGS Artist and Album
 Image Fetcher.

Thanks, I did that as soon as I get the answer back from discogs. I
just wanted to get this out there so that others that may potentially
get bitten by this know that there's a problem (and how to mitigate it).

 Sorry for the inconvenience and thanks for this bug report.

It's not a problem in the least. Thanks for all you do with helping make
my preferred Linux distribution even better.

Bug#705164: gmpc-plugins: Metadat Handler uses outdated API

2013-04-10 Thread Edward J. Shornock
Package: gmpc-plugins
Version: 11.8.16-1
Severity: important
Tags: upstream

Use of this package with the DiscoGS Artit and Album Image Fetcher
enabled caused my IP address to be blocked by discogs.com.

 Your IP was auto-blocked due the continued use of an outdated app that
 is still trying to access our site via unsupported methods. The app in
 question appears as gmpc libsoup/2.38.1. I've unblocked your IP
 address, but please be aware that your IP could be auto-blocked again
 with the continued use of gmpc libsoup/2.38.1.

Until this Metadata Handler is switched to use supported methods,
this functionality should probably be disabled in the package to prevent
users from being automatically blocked from accessing discogs.com..

Bug#703913: akregator: timestamps for a few feeds are incorrect.

2013-03-25 Thread Edward J. Shornock
Package: akregator
Version: 4:4.4.11.1+l10n-3+b1
Severity: normal
Tags: upstream

A few of my feeds have the wrong date time displayed. In
Firefox/Iceweasel the timestamp is correct.

The timestamp displayed for these feeds is always 07.02.2106 08:28. I
have not been able to determine how that timestamp is assigned. I do not
know if this is a problem with the newer versions of kdepim.

Bug#695323: icedove: error occurred while creating a message compose window

2012-12-06 Thread Edward J. Shornock
Package: icedove
Version: 17.0-1
Severity: normal

When trying to forward certain messages, I receive the following:
An error occurred while creating a message compose window. Please try
again.

In the error console I see:
Timestamp: 07.12.2012 03.15.57
Error: [Exception... Component returned failure code: 0x80520006

Source File: chrome://messenger/content/messengercompose/MsgComposeCommands.js
Line: 2419

After clicking the OK button for the error message, the following is logged:

On the messages that inhibit this problem, reply and reply-to-all work
fine but forward will not. So far the unforwardable messages have from
RIPE (Notification of RIPE Database changes) and I have only seen
this problem with these messages from RIPE.

I can reproduce this with 10.0.10-1, 10.0.11-1, and 17.0-1. I can still
reproduce it with a clean profile (these messages are located in an
IMAP-enabled account).

I cannot, however, reproduce it with the upstream Thunderbird downloaded
from mozilla.org, with Thunderbird in an Ubuntu 12.10 VM, nor with
Thunderbird in a Windows VM.

Bug#689271: virtualbox: hang when starting vm w/ lxc running

2012-09-30 Thread Edward J. Shornock
Package: virtualbox
Version: 4.1.18-dfsg-1
Severity: normal

I have found that starting a guest VM in Virtualbox will hang the host
computer while I have an active LXC container. The mouse and keyboard
will not respond, requiring power to be cycled or the reset button to be
pressed. Back in the day I experienced similiar problems with the KVM
module loaded. Unloading kvm with modprobe -r kvm_amd kvm does not
prevent the lock-ups this time.

The LXC container is using libvirt but only to communicate across the
network. Stopping libvirt before running the the VM in Virtualbox does
not stop the lock-up from happening.

The host system will not lock-up if the lxc container is stopped before
the Virtualbox guest is started.

I don't see anything related in any of the logs.

Bug#683187: whois: unstable results from whois.crsnic.net due to remote IPv6 issues

2012-07-29 Thread Edward J. Shornock
Package: whois
Version: 5.0.18
Severity: normal
Tags: upstream

For the last few months replies from the whois servers at crsnic.net have been
spotty. Today I got annoyed enough to diagnose it.

Often the requests will fail like this:

---
$ whois nytimes.com

Whois Server Version 2.0

Domain names in the .com and .net domains can now be registered
with many different competing registrars. Go to http://www.internic.net
for detailed information.
Timeout.
---

I found that the problem stems from IPv6 servers that don't respond. These IP
addresses are resolved for whois.crsnic.net:

---
$ host -t  whois.internic.net
whois.internic.net has IPv6 address 2001:501:8a29:1060::74
whois.internic.net has IPv6 address 2001:502:8c25:1060::74
whois.internic.net has IPv6 address 2001:502:be98:1060::74
whois.internic.net has IPv6 address 2001:503:3227:1060::74
whois.internic.net has IPv6 address 2001:503:4872:1060::74
whois.internic.net has IPv6 address 2001:503:5ae2:1060::74
whois.internic.net has IPv6 address 2001:503:7bbf:1060::74
whois.internic.net has IPv6 address 2001:503:91ef:1060::74
whois.internic.net has IPv6 address 2001:503:bfb0:1060::74
whois.internic.net has IPv6 address 2001:503:f3da:1060::74
whois.internic.net has IPv6 address 2001:503:ff39:1060::74
---

Of the IPv6 servers, these don't respond at all:
2001:502:8c25:1060::74
2001:502:be98:1060::74
2001:503:4872:1060::74
2001:503:7bbf:1060::74
2001:503:f3da:1060::74
2001:503:ff39:1060::74

These servers respond but time out before giving the information requested:
2001:501:8a29:1060::74
2001:503:5ae2:1060::74
2001:503:91ef:1060::74
2001:503:bfb0:1060::74

Only one of the IPv6 servers responded and gave the correct info:
2001:503:3227:1060::74

These servers aren't even listening on port 43:
2001:502:8c25:1060::74
2001:502:be98:1060::74
2001:503:4872:1060::74
2001:503:7bbf:1060::74
2001:503:f3da:1060::74

While the problem is obviously caused by issues with the remote servers, it
would be good if whois could deal with broken servers like these more
gracefully (though I don't know how this could best be done).

As a temporary measure I've added the working servers to my dnsmasq config:

-
address=/whois.crsnic.net/199.7.57.74
address=/whois.crsnic.net/2001:503:3227:1060::74

Bug#676381: procps: IPV6 privacy extensions not activted even though configured

 OK, that's different then (I've had a lot of bug reports regarding
 problems around ipv6 in a module).

I noticed that. ;)

 Can you check that all three items are not set? I suspect it is to do
 with the configuration being setup before the interface is configured.

For some reason I can reproduce this on two live systems (Sid and
Wheezy) but it works perfectly in a Wheezy virtual machine.

The settings after boot-up:

# awk -F'=' '{print $1}' /etc/sysctl.d/*.conf  |while read foo; do sysctl
$foo;done
net.ipv6.conf.all.use_tempaddr = 2
net.ipv6.conf.default.use_tempaddr = 2
net.ipv6.conf.eth0.use_tempaddr = 0

I've not figured out what's stopping it from working on these two boxes
(one is an older system and the other is much beefier).

Even though the file /etc/sysctl.d/10-ipv6-privacy.conf exists with the

net.ipv6.conf.default.use_tempaddr=2

privacy extensions are not turned on during boot. I am using a Debian
kernel which has ipv6 compiled into the kernel.

sysctl --system will turn them on once the system is booted.

Bug#636395: mutt: freezes at Sorting mailbox...

2011-08-04 Thread Edward J. Shornock
* Jonathan Nieder jrnie...@gmail.com [05-08-2011 02:25 EEST]:
 Ah, sorry for the trouble. I should have mentioned that getting a readable
 backtrace requires installing the mutt-dbg package.

No problem. I don't know why I didn't notice the dbg package earlier.
The backtrace helped me to see what part of my config was causing it to
hang:

alternative_order text/enriched text/plain text/html
auto_view text/html

I noticed that, for some reason, I didn't have links installed. I
installed that and added the following to .mutt/mailcap:
text/html;  links %s; nametemplate=%s.html
text/html;  links -dump %s; nametemplate=%s.html;
copiousoutput

After doing this, mutt is much, much better (it moves past Sorting
mailbox... but it pauses briefly (a second or two) when moving down to
another screenful of messages.

In case it's of use I'm attaching the gdb output with the mutt-dbg package
installed. (I'm sorry for the useless bt earlier).

Thanks,

Ed

Bug#636388: pacpl: even with lame installed,encoding to mp3 does not work

2011-08-02 Thread Edward J. Shornock
Package: pacpl
Version: 4.0.5-6
Severity: normal
Tags: patch

Trying to encode to mp3 no longer works. When specifying --encoder lame
--to mp3, the patent warning message is displayed even though I have lame
installed.

The attached patch, if deemed acceptable, would replace the current
debian/patches/35_pacpl_patent-warning-for-mp3-using-lame.patch. With this
patch applied pacpl works with lame again.

 Hello (new maintainer here),

 It seems to work fine with libglib2.0-0 version 2.28.6-1 (in sid and
 wheezy ATM).

 Is it still an issue for you ? Otherwise I will close this bug.

Hi,

I'm sorry about the late reply. This is no longer an issue for me so

I do not have a problem using project-x with sun-java6-jre (currently

Please let me know if I can provide any information that would be
helpful to track down the issue.

Bug#596445: consumes 100% of processor after libc6 upgrade

2010-09-13 Thread Edward J. Shornock
Package: mpdscribble
Severity: normal

I also experienced ridiculously high CPU utilization which caused my
system to hang. After it unlocked mpdscribble was no longer running.
/var/log/kern.log showed:

Sep 13 23:27:26 darkside kernel: [70592.386824] mpdscribble[3980]:
segfault at 7fffeaee5ff8 ip 7f6d40ede8c5 sp 7fffeaee6018 error 6
in libc-2.11.2.so[7f6d40e68000+158000]

Rebuilding mpdscribble solved the extremely high CPU utilization. I did
not try downgrading libmpdclient2 because the earlier version is
libmpdclient (2.2-1) from a couple of months ago.

Libc6 had been upgraded within the last few days. After downgrading
libc6 to v2.11.2-2, the version of mpdscribble in Debian works again.

I noticed that the filer of this bug also had libc6 2.11.2-5 installed.
I suspect that the libc6 upgrade triggers this problem.

Package: python2.6-minimal

...but after installing python2.6-minimal in a chroot,

Bug#590287: vlc: Potential ALSA version problem without locale change

2010-07-25 Thread Edward J. Shornock
Package: vlc
Version: 1.1.0-4
Severity: normal

When trying to play a file I receive the following error:

Potential ALSA version problem:
VLC failed to initialize your sound output device (if any).
Please update alsa-lib to version 1.0.23-2-g8d80d5f or higher to try to fix
this issue.

The console window shows:

ALSA lib pcm_softvol.c:1022:(_snd_pcm_softvol_open) Invalid min_dB value
[0x1981040] oss audio output error: cannot open audio device (/dev/dsp)

Interestingly, if I change the locale settings (for example LANG=C or
LANG=en_GB.UTF-8), sound works as expected. I am able to reproduce this
with currently 1.1.0-4, 1.1.1-1, and 1.1.1-1+exp1.

Attached is a debug log (vlc -vvv) and my /etc/asoundrc. If I can
provide more information that would help, please let me know.

Hi Edward,

Thanks for the patch. Did you check if 3.0.* does the trick?

The last recompile just finished. It seems that 3.0.* does indeed work
without breaking anything else (that I can see).

These days dh_desktop doesn't do anything. According to the manpage:

   If a package ships desktop files, they just need to be installed

Bug#500435: crashes, when I try to insert special symbol

2009-11-15 Thread Edward J. Shornock
Package: abiword
Severity: normal

For what it's worth, I've just downgraded from 2.7-SVN to 2.6.8-5 and
abiword no longer crashes for me when selecting 'Insert - Symbol'.

I still receive the following on stdout yet:

abiword:32159): Pango-WARNING **: shaping failure, expect ugly output.
shape-engine='BasicEngineFc', font='Standard Symbols L 32', text=''

Can others reproduce the crash yet?

Bug#500435: crashes, when I try to insert special symbol

2009-11-15 Thread Edward J. Shornock
* Patrik Fimml pat...@fimml.at [16-11-2009 00:13 EET]:
 I've been able to reproduce it before. My guess is that it was a certain
 version of Pango that led to this behaviour.

That's what I was thinking, due to the fact that 2.6.8-5 was uploaded
long, long ago.

 Note that 2.8.0-1 is waiting in NEW and shouldn't have this bug anymore.

I snatched 2.8.1-1 from mentors.d.o and it looks quite good. Thanks for
your work on the packaging. =)

Testing is immune from this problem of Iceweasel crashing when trying
to edit bookmarks. I have read that people have had problems with other
software crashing because of sqlite--I don't know if those applications
have the problem in testing.

I can still easily reproduce the crash with Iceweasel v.3.5.4-1 which just came

 Hello Edward, thanks for your report. Please attach your /etc/daptup.conf.

Here it is. I've not edited it so it *should* be the same as was shipped
with the package.

Bug#546599: iceweasel: Crash when clicking the star in the awesome bar for a site that 'lives' in Unsorted Bookmarks

2009-09-14 Thread Edward J. Shornock
Package: iceweasel
Version: 3.5.3-1
Severity: normal
Tags: experimental

The problem is as the subject says. In more detail:

I went to a web site. I clicked the Star to the right side of the Awesome Bar
to add the site to the bookmarks/places. I then clicked the Star again to pull
up
the Bookmark Properties Window to send the bookmark to another folder.
Iceweasel crashed.

I cannot reproduce the crash with the upstream Firefox (both x64 and
x86). I only experience the crash when using Iceweasel compiled against
the system libsqlite3-0 (which is of course the most recent in sid,
3.6.17-2). Starting with a new profile (copying the places.sqlite)
doesn't make a difference. Running pragma integrity_check on the
places.sqlite database returns no errors, but for the heck of it I
deleted ~/.mozilla/firefox/profile/places*. This didn't stop the
crashing either.

Attempting to run gdb is 'kinda' successful. For whatever reason, after
the crash, X no longer responds. I can't switch to virtual consoles to
kill gdb, after which I can switch back to X which is fully functional
again.

The xterm (or Konsole) window shows:

 I'm having a similar problem. Psi blocks when I start typing anything in

 Disabling the spell checking fixes the problem.

I experienced the same as in #526335, which seemed to start once libqt4 4.5.1
was installed on 25 April. After recompiling psi with the newest libqt4-dev, my
psi no longer locks up, even with spell checking enabled.

...but I also did not get any output at the console.
