No, this does not change anything.

Thus apt-get it is.

Bug#948892: Please document that apt does not keep files in /var/cache/apt/archives

2024-09-18 Thread Helge Kreutzmann
Hello Maintainers,
until recently I was using apt-get as I did for ages. Now in a
different bug report it was suggestes that I switch to apt, which I
did.

Now I discovered this bug, i.e. deb files are no longer stored in
/var/cache/apt/archives.

As the submitter, I really like the behaviour of keeping the files
there and I do not use autoclean.

At least on one occurance this was vital, when an upgrade broke net
connectivity (but only after next reboot). So I was offline and the
only chance I had was to use the older deb.

This is IMHO a crucial difference between apt-get and apt.

I read apt(8) and apt.conf(5), but could not find anything about this
missing behaviour.

So it clearly needs good documentation.

I clearly support the original submitter in all of his arguements,
especially:
> Keep-Downloaded-Packages, which is an important option, is not
> documented anywhere.

For others reading this bug, this is most likely
APT::Keep-Downloaded-Packages "true";

Which I'm now trying (or switching back to apt-get).

Greetings

This is why I try to respond to your e-mails and ask where I'm not
sure. And thanks that you keep at it.

I'm not intending to waste time, and apologies if it looks like. When
I know what to provide, I do my best to provide it. It's just hard to
diff to a "normal setup", when I have a single machine.

Thanks I just installed libpam-wtmpdb. I'll see how the output changes
over the next days. (First experiment - looks good!, but I give it a
reboot cycle to finally confirm).

Thanks for the explanation. I was not aware of this.

So probably this bug can thus be closed, having libpam-wtmpdb
installed (as is done in the default case) is sufficient.

Thanks again for your help.

Sorry that I misunderstood you. That's why I asked.

And no, I have no idea how to debug PAM. It's eaons ago that I last
looked at PAM. I'm pretty sure it's exactely like it was when this
machine was installed during the development of bookworm.

Well, not in this words, but the util-linux maintainer pointed me to
this. And again, this was not a claim, but a proposal that people like
me know that it is not but it needs some "fixing" (debugging,
configuation, ..) to make it work like the old version. (As I
understood you, it can work like the util-linux version of last).

> If you installed just the reader tool, then obviously that won't
> magically work.

Well, this is how I understood you. I did not know there is more to it
- for util-linux version I simply installed and it worked. I cant ever
remember having to configure some background.

And after reading last(1) from wtmb it was exactly why I opened this
*wishlist* bug - to make it work like the old one did (which seems
sensible to me).

Seems like we are fighting without cause.

So this is a PAM bug and I should reassing this to PAM?

I did not configure PAM in any way. I use last in stable, then I
switched to testing, and then quickly last vanished and the util-linux
maintainer told me that it is replaced by the wtmpdb version.

Maybe documenting it is not a drop-in replacement and needs some
additional configuration?

As advised by you, I clone this bug to seahorse-adventures as well. (Please
read my part).

As there is nothing reported there, no (force) merging is necessary.

For the seahorse-adventures maintainers:

Yesterday the daily dist-upgrade threw the following messages:

 /usr/share/games/seahorse-adventures/lib/pgu/gui/theme.py:106: SyntaxWarning:
invalid escape sequence '\.'
   is_image = re.compile('\.(gif|jpg|bmp|png|tga)$', re.I)

 /usr/share/games/seahorse-adventures/lib/pgu/html.py:432: SyntaxWarning:

   txt = re.compile("\s+").sub(" ",txt)

According to Stefano, you need to fix this in seahorse-adventures

For some time, I did the latter, i.e. created a script which executes
all steps but the "find_java_runtime java9". And I could not notice
any problem (at least in my use cases).

So maybe uploading with this line commented out would be possible?

Thanks for handling

But the last lines say:
 /usr/share/games/seahorse-adventures/lib/pgu/gui/theme.py:106: SyntaxWarning:
invalid escape sequence '\.'
   is_image = re.compile('\.(gif|jpg|bmp|png|tga)$', re.I)

So cloning to seahorse-adventures would be necessary as well, am

Bug#1081811: wtmpdb: Please record logins as well

2024-09-15 Thread Helge Kreutzmann
Package: wtmpdb
Version: 0.13.0-1
Severity: wishlist

Until June, last was shipped by util-linux. This is unfortuantely no
longer the case (see #1072485).

However, "last" from wtmpdb is not a drop in replacement. It only
shows reboots, while last from util-linux showed logins as well, which
is what I'm mainly interested looking at long running severs.

It would be great if last could gain this capability.

This does not look good to me, but I've no understanding for python.

Either there is a python problem or the output is too verbose, because
packages should print status messages, not long logs. (And I cannot
remember having seen such an output before).

Yes, this build failure is expected:
"/usr/bin/perl" -MExtUtils::MY -e 'MY->fixin(shift)' --
blib/script/apt-src
make[1]: *** No rule to make target 'man/apt-src.es.pod', needed by
'manifypods'. Stop.
make[1]: Leaving directory '/tmp/astest/apt-src-0.25.4'

(This is after I faked more strings in de.po).

The build system "as is" does not deal with incomplete translations,
see the Makefile line 421:

manifypods : pure_all config \
man/apt-src.de.pod \
man/apt-src.es.pod \
man/apt-src.fr.pod \
man/apt-src.nl.pod \
man/apt-src.pod \
man/apt-src.pt.pod
$(NOECHO) $(POD2MAN) --section=$(MAN1EXT) --perm_rw=$(PERM_RW) -u \
  man/apt-src.de.pod man/apt-src.de.1 \
  man/apt-src.es.pod man/apt-src.es.1 \
  man/apt-src.fr.pod man/apt-src.fr.1 \
  man/apt-src.nl.pod man/apt-src.nl.1 \
  man/apt-src.pod man/apt-src.1 \
  man/apt-src.pt.pod man/apt-src.pt.1

Once I get your go, I will request all translations to be updated
again, and given that apt-src.1 is rather static, this problem should
not occur in practice. It only happens now, as I updated apt-src.1 but
not the translations.

So my proposal is to ignore this problem. For testing, you can fake
entries in the de.po, es.po, fr.po and nl.po. As said earlier, once
you approve the patch, the translations will return to 100%. If some
new translations should arrive, it will be 100% and you will need to
update this piece of the Makefile.

Of course, this can be done dynamic. But given the static nature of
this package, I don't think it is worth the effort, but if you are
interested, its documented in po4a(1).

So my proposal is to first get this package back in shape and testing.
Making the Makefile dynamic would be the next step, which you can work
on after I "left" taking care and with properly i18n in testing.

Would that be fine for your?

Greetings

  Helge

You can contact me. We can also go step by step, i.e. first resolve
the release critical bug. At which step did you run into problems?

Unfortunately, this does not work (for me):
apt-src_0.25.4.dsc:
dscverify: apt-src_0.25.4.dsc failed signature check:
gpg: no valid OpenPGP data found.
gpg: the signature could not be verified.
Please remember that the signature file (.sig or .asc)
should be the first file given on the command line.
Validation FAILED!!

Do you maybe have git repository I could clone? Or can you
tar up the the current state and make it available somewhere?

Thanks for working on it.

Ping?

If anything is unclear, I'm happy to resolve this.

Please note this is a two step process:

1) You review the changes and apply them, possibly with an uplaod.

2) I then unfuzzy all translations and request updates, once they
arrived, a (2nd) upload needs to happen.

Bug#1079575: coreutils: who does not report users on virtual terminals

2024-08-24 Thread Helge Kreutzmann
Package: coreutils
Version: 9.4-3.1
Severity: normal

I heavily use the Linux virtual terminals, usually I'm logged in in
about 8-10 of them.

helge@twentytwo:~$ ps aux|grep bash
helge 3716 0.0 0.0 12640 5860 tty3 S18:08 0:00 -bash

helge 4496 0.0 0.0 9984 2420 tty7 S+ 18:17 0:00 grep bash

Calling who yields:
helge@twentytwo:~$ who
helge@twentytwo:~$

The man page claims:
DESCRIPTION
Print information about users who are currently logged in.

So either who is wrong or the man page.

I'm pretty sure who worked also in this case in bookworm (however, I
cannot test).

Now, after additionally logging in in X, I get:
helge@twentytwo:~$ who

However, these entries are the list of all X terminals, which are
no individual logins (these xterms do not run the bash login scripts,
contrary to the one in each Linux virtual terminal).

Bug#1079004: po4a: In man pages <.Nm> is not displayed

2024-08-18 Thread Helge Kreutzmann
Package: po4a
Version: 0.73-2
Severity: normal

This bug is strange, as the same construct works in the original
version, but not in the translated one.

In the English version, an .Nm alone prints the name of the command,
in the translated version it does not.

As a workaround, I globally replace all stand alone .Nm (and .Nm ,) by
.Nm name (or .Nm name , respectively), where "name" is the name of the
man page in the "final" man page.

2024-08-18 Thread Helge Kreutzmann

Some (sub)strings are not offered for translation and are just printed

As an example from bash.1:
There is a line in bash.1 as follows:

Bug#1078476: Acknowledgement (mediathekview: JVM flavor 'java9' not understood)

2024-08-11 Thread Helge Kreutzmann
Hello Maintainer,
mediathekview *does* work, but the startup script does not. I just
noticed it is a shell script.

If I run the steps manually and ignore the messages in the 2nd step,
then the startup succeeds:

. /usr/lib/java-wrappers/java-wrappers.sh
find_java_runtime java9
run_java -Xms128M -Xmx1G -Djdk.gtk.version=2 -jar
/usr/share/mediathekview/MediathekView.jar "$@"

So as a bandaid either "set -e" could be removed or maybe the call
"find_java_runtime java9" is not necessary (any more)?

Greetings

2024-08-11 Thread Helge Kreutzmann
Package: mediathekview
Version: 13.2.1+ds-1
Severity: important

About one week ago mediathekview worked as expected, however, when I
just wanted to launch it, I got the following error message:

helge@twentytwo:~$ mediathekview
[warning] /usr/bin/mediathekview: JVM flavor 'java9' not understood
[warning] /usr/bin/mediathekview: No java runtime was found

There were quite a few java related updates in testing over the last
days, but I don't have any idea which caused this.

Thanks for adding me. I now pushed the change to the branch
manpage-translation.

Please do not use my patch in this bug report, it was not correct.

Once you approved the update, I can proceed with a call for
translators to update their respective translation.

Greetings

2024-08-07 Thread Helge Kreutzmann
Hello Aurélien,
the following is 100% reproducible:

(1. Boot machine )
2. Log into Console 7 (it only happens with 7)
3. Log out again

→ Sddm is gone

For all other consoles it works (I tried 2…6 and 8…12).

Can you try this as well?

Bug#1077994: rpm-i18n: Status of i18n man pages unclear

2024-08-05 Thread Helge Kreutzmann
Package: rpm-i18n
Version: 4.19.1.1+dfsg-1
Severity: normal

In the package description rpm-i18n claims to carry localized (i18n)
man pages. However, the package does not contain any.

Previously, manpages-l10n used to ship i18n rpm man pages. Currently
there are translators interested in picking it up.

We need to coordinate here, to avoid file clashes and double ressource
usage. If rpm-i18n ships localized man pages in the future, then
manpages-l10n will not do so. It would be best to transfer all
existing translations then to you (or upstream).

However, if you do not want to ship and maintain (!) the translations,
then manpages-l10n can do so. In this case, you should of course
update the package description of rpm-i18n.

It would be great if you could inform me so I can guide the interested
translator(s).

Greetings

   Helge

Could you kindly prepare that branch then? My git foo is limited and
I'm afraid I'll break things.

I will work on it in the next days.

Just be advised that "cerry-picking" is tricky in l10n work. So it is
best to tell me quickly if something is not as you want, so I can
ajust.

I can also wait if you prefer and work on this e.g. September/October?

I'm sorry to hear. But I guess this is common - in "my" project
manpages-l10n I went from beeing a team member (3+) to the Debian
maintainer and now the (sole) upstream maintainer.

Bug#1077923: openssh-server: Every few seconds the connection pauses for ~ 5 seconds

2024-08-04 Thread Helge Kreutzmann
Package: openssh-server
Version: 1:9.7p1-7
Severity: normal

Hello ssh maintainers,
first of all, I'm not sure if this is a bug in the client or server. I
was prompted and selected "both", but then reportbug told me the
package ssh does not exist. So please reassign as appropriate.

This is a regression compared to bookwork, from which I upgraded this
machine a few weeks ago.

Under X I run "ssh -X localuser@localhost" where localuser is a
different uid than my ordinary one.

Once logged in I launch
firefox

Firefox takes long to start (but this happened in bookworm as well).
In Bookworm I was then able to use firefox as expected.

In Testing Firefox works for a few seconds, then "pauses" for ~ 5
seconds and then works again for a few seconds, "pauses" for ~ 5
seconds and so on. Note that keyboard input is buffered, so if I e.g.
type an URL during this pause, the keystrokes are delivered after the
pause.

To narrow this down:
firefox without ssh does not exhibit this problem.

/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libexec/kf5/kdesu -u localuser /opt/firefox/firefox

also does not exhibit this problem.

So something in ssh (client or server) must have changed to cause
these delays.

I ran the ssh session in verbose mode (-vvv), where I run the above
command, launched firefox, hit one or two of these delays, closed
firefox and logged out. The log is attached.

If I should try something else or if you need other/further logs,
simply tell me so that I can provde them.

Sorry for the delay.

Is it ok for you that I commit the updates directly into relevant man
pages?

Afterwards I would also update the relevant po(t) files and - if you
like - run a call updates for the relevant languages.

I would also update the German translation.

I would of course commit "git friendly", so you can review the diff as
you see fit.

Is this fine for you?

Not on purpose. I upgraded from bookworm and did not manually install
pipewire or wirepulumber.

Neither, I simply took what "apt-get dist-ugprade" told me.

Simply tell me what I should try, which additional output you need
etc.

(I can temprarily deinstall pulseaudio again and reinstall
pipewire-pulse).

Thanks, this made it easy.

It is the option "visualbell" which causes this behaviour. Until
bookworm paging worked in in insert mode with this option but without
visual bell, now it does.

Is this a delibarate feature change?

Here is it step by step:
  * Recode French addendum into UTF-8 (closes: 1073483).

Simply execute
recode latin1..utf8 ./man/apt-src.add.fr

  * Add German man page translation (closes: 1026782).

Drop the file provided in bug 1026782 into ./man/po/
You will need to update both Makefile.PL as well man/po4a.cfg, the
complete patch is below (for all languages).

  * And also add German addendum.

This I wrote from scratch because I realized that it sensible to have,
I attached this file.

  * Add Dutch man page translation (closes: 1070916).
Drop the file provided in bug 1070916 into ./man/po/ and gunzip it.
You will need to update both Makefile.PL as well man/po4a.cfg, the
complete patch is below (for all languages).

  * Add Portuguese man page translation (closes: 980162).
Drop the file provided in bug 980162 into ./man/po/ and gunzip it.
You will need to update both Makefile.PL as well man/po4a.cfg, the
complete patch is below (for all languages).

The build system of apt-src is not very flexible regarding po4a.
Instead of replacing it with a flexible version I simply updated the
current build code as follows:

I basically implemented the patch described in 1026896, however, with
some further tweaks.

I attached the patch.

Mostly editorial, but the pine → mutt change and my (small) change
regarding make-kpkg might draw your attention.

If you are fine with this patch (or a derived version of it) then
I will provide you with two more changes:

  * Unfuzzy all translations
Currently, you build fails because all translations are outdated. Most
changes proposed, however, can be easily updated for all langauges. It
is just a bit of routine work, and you will get patches for all po
files.

  * Requeste updates from translators
Very few updated strings (maybe only one or two) require attention
from a real translator. I would ask them to send in the updates. I
would give them ~ 2 weeks to make these small updates, and then could
can upload.

There is one more change I would like to do. debian/copyright is not
in the modern format, but instead of researching all contributors I
would like to propose the following patch (which needs updates, once
the translators responded):

Bug#1073483: Intent to NMU apt-src to fix its trivial FTBFS bug

2024-07-29 Thread Helge Kreutzmann
Hello Laszlo,
I intent to NMU apt-src to fix its trivial FTFBS bug (essentially a
recode latin1..utf8 is the fix).

I will include the missing translations and update the man page, i.e.
the changelog will look similiar to:
  * Recode French addendum into UTF-8 (closes: 1073483).
  * Add German man page translation (closes: 1026782).
  * And also add German addendum.
  * Add Dutch man page translation (closes: 1070916).
  * Add Portuguese man page translation (closes: 980162).
  * Resolve issues in apt-src man page (closes: 1026896).
  * Unfuzzy all translations where possible

If you feel this NMU should not happen, please let me know ASAP.

Greetings

I think for README.Debian this is fine, but maybe you can add a NEWS
file as well, something like:

--- snip --- snip -- snip ---

Po4a (since version 0.70) is more strict about encoding issues. If you
experience trouble with translations, read README.Debian for more
information and double check all encondings used in PO files.

You also might want to consider converting legacy encodings to UTF-8.

--- snip --- snip -- snip ---

You might of course drop the last sentence, but I think legacy
encoding should be phased out in 2024 whereever possible.

Maybe you could upload 0.73 to Debian with such a NEWS (and
README.Debian) in the next days?

Greetings

Is there some docs how to trace this down? For a normal programm, using the

Bug#1074092: vim: Annoying visual bell in insert mode when pageing after upgrade to trixie

2024-06-23 Thread Helge Kreutzmann
Package: vim
Version: 2:9.1.0496-1
Severity: minor

Up until bookworm no visual bell was shown in vim on the console
with my configuration. Now in insert mode (only), when paging an annoying visual
bell is shown.

This is *not* occuring with --clean but from the Debian changes I
could not derive which settings fault it is.

(And I have no idea how to search in the docs for it).

As this is a (minor) regression, I'm reporting this. And if you have
any suggestion how to find out which setting this causes (except for
bisecting) I would be happy :-))

Bug#1072840: Acknowledgement (sddm: Sddm crashes regularly)

2024-06-23 Thread Helge Kreutzmann
Hello Sddm maintainers,
I analysed this annyoing bug further. The following pattern seems to
hold always:

1. Start X session (various window managers, doest not seem to be
   relevant)

2. Start several user consoles.

3. Work for some time, switching back and forth between the
   virtual consoles and X

4. Log out from one (or more) user consoles.

5. Sddm crashes, sometimes directly, sometimes I can go into X (and
back to the consoles) one final time.

Step 3 seems to be important, because I tried to omit it, i.e. use a
freshly booted system and start and close several consoles without
doing something there and sddm did *not* crash. (I switched back and
forth between consoles and X serveral times).

Could it be ssh related? Because I use ssh a lot (both in X and on the
console) and I did not use this in my tests (I can do so next time).

Is there anything I should watch out for, or any other programm which
might interact with sddm during step 3, which I should try to trigger
to make this bug step-by-step reproducible?

Thanks!

Greetings

2024-06-16 Thread Helge Kreutzmann
Package: wnpp
Severity: normal
X-Debbugs-Cc: goo...@packages.debian.org

I intend to orphan the goobox package.

The package description is:
Goobox is an CD player and ripper for the GNOME 3 environment. It follows the
"Just Works" principle so its interface is beautiful and easy-to-use.
 .
It uses GNOME/GTK+ for its user interface, GStreamer framework for CD playing,
and ripping operations, musicbrainz for CD indexing, and Google to search
 for album cover images.

I don't use it, upstream has ceased the work (last upload 2019 and
home page vanished) and only occasionally an updated translation
appears.

I tried to document all specialities with appropriate bug reports.

I'm not arguing the severity (I left it intentionally to you after
closing), but there still is a bug. I leave this to you and Santiago,
but making several pages suddenly FTBFS is IMHO at least serious.

For several years (probably something like 10 years) this worked
without problem, now it fails (and with a very strange message). If
the previous po4a was buggy, i.e. allowed broken config files, then a
warning or NOTE during updates would be mandated, but switching this
(inadverently, probably) to a strange or even fatal error message is
not sufficient.

Here is the statement from Santiago:
   From: Santiago Vila
   To: 1072...@bugs.debian.org, Helge Kreutzmann
Subject: Regression: po4a fails on valid non-utf8 file
   Date: Wed, 5 Jun 2024 19:03:48 +0200

(Adding this note to the cloned bug)

Note: If you take a look at the FTBFS bugs I reported yesterday:

 https://people.debian.org/~sanvila/build-logs/202406/?C=M;O=A

you can see that several of them are also a consequence of this change in po4a.

So, I fully support that this kind of behaviour change deserves
at least an entry in NEWS.Debian.

 Thanks.

So no, this bug is not closed.

As you can see, "Jean-Michel_Jarre-Oxygène_3" is not listed.

If I copy and paste the full name, it does not work either:

In Stable, sddm was not blocking VT2 etc. Now it blocks VT2 (VT1 is
blocked for some time by boot messages, unfortuantely). So the first
usable VT is VT3.

When I restart sddm after the crash (see #1072840), VT1 is used, so I
can use VT 2 again for work.

I could not figure out where this is configured, the files in
/etc/sddm/ do not seem to govern it.

Kindly use VT1 by default.

Bug#1072825: po4a: Support MR macro natively

2024-06-08 Thread Helge Kreutzmann
Package: po4a
Version: 0.72-1
Severity: wishlist

groff 1.23 introduces the macro .MR for references like "groff(1)".
Using --option translate_joined or --option untranslated this macro
can be considered for translation.

However, this is not very good. Consider the following examples
from groff(1):

Run eqn(1) preprocessor.

.
.TP
.B \-e
Run
.MR \%eqn 1
preprocessor.
.

This is now 3 paragraphs in the po file:
#. type: Plain text
msgid "Run"
msgstr ""

#. type: MR
#, no-wrap
msgid "\\%eqn 1"
msgstr ""

#. type: Plain text
msgid "preprocessor."
msgstr ""

As you can see, po strings may become very short. Some
paragraphs are now a few po strings in the file, making it clumsy to
translate, especially if the "MR" part is the last in the english
sentence, but should be somewhere else in the translated sentence.

Or:
A
.MR man 1
librarian program \" such as man-db, since 2001
may use this macro file to delegate loading of the correct macro
…

which becomes

#. type: Plain text
msgid "A"
msgstr ""

#. type: MR
#, no-wrap
msgid "man 1"
msgstr ""

#. such as man-db, since 2001
msgid ""
"librarian program may use this macro file to delegate loading of the correct "
"macro package; it is thus unnecessary for I itself to scan the contents "
"of a document to decide the issue."
msgstr ""

Here, you have the problem that "A" can be translated as "Ein", "Eine" oder
"Einer" in German, so if this occurs multiple times, you might not be able to
correctly translate it. Fortunately, current groff(1) uses this one
only once.

Maybe you can implement it like B<> and I<>, e.g. using R<> for
"reference" or simmilar?

groff(1) has some fallback code for older groffs, maybe you can use
this as starting point for implementation?
.\" Define fallback for groff 1.23's MR macro if the system lacks it.
.nr do-fallback 0
.if !\n(.f .nr do-fallback 1 \" mandoc
.if \n(.g .if !d MR .nr do-fallback 1 \" older groff
.if !\n(.g .nr do-fallback 1 \" non-groff *roff
.if \n[do-fallback] \{\
. de MR
.ie \\n(.$=1 \
. I \%\\$1
.el \
. IR \%\\$1 (\\$2)\\$3
. .
.\}
.rr do-fallback

Thank you very much for considering.

Bug#1072645: pipewire: Apps using pipewire broken

2024-06-05 Thread Helge Kreutzmann
Package: pipewire
Version: 1.0.7-1
Severity: important

I upgraded from stable to testing a few days ago. In stable all video
and audio applications worked as expected, e.g. vlc, mpv, cmus,
mpg123, ogg123 …

Now many apps don't. Some (like cmus) produce output, but e.g. vlc and
mpv do not. The only difference I could determine is using pipewire.
The effect is that the first video frame is shown, then the
application freezes/stops.

Examples:
helge@twentytwo:~/download/Video/View$ mpv Cher\ -\ If\ I\ Could\ Turn\ Back\
Time\ \(Official\ Video\)\ \[9n3A_-HRFfc\].webm

pavucontrol only shows a dummy output.

I tried downgrading pipewire to the stable version, but this is not
possible (maybe rebuilding works, did not try).

To get mpv to work again, I read its man page and found the following
working command line:
mpv --audio-device=alsa/plughw:CARD=Generic_1,DEV=0 Cher\ -\ If\ I\ Could\
Turn\ Back\ Time\ \(Official\ Video\)\ \[9n3A_-HRFfc\].webm

Please tell me which additional information you need to track this
down.

Hello Santiago,
hello Po4a maintainers,
excuse the TOFU. The build of goobox currently fails on a po file
encoded in ISO-8859-15. The package builds with this file since at
least 2015, with previous version since 2007. Reading the changelog
(NEWS.gz) I cannot detect any depreciation of ISO-8859-15 files. So
this is a regression introduced with po4a 0.72 (or earlier, not all
previous version were shipped for Debian).

The relevant file (attached) does not show any error, i18nspector
reads it fine and recode latin1..utf8 on the file neither prints an
error.

The fix (workaround) for goobox is simple, recode the file to UTF-8.
I'll prepare an upload probably this weekend.

I thus cloned this bug, for goobox to get building again and for po4a
to fix the regression (or clearly depreciating non utf8 locales, with
appropriate NEWS entry etc.). This might affect lots of users of "old"
translations.

Maybe stop shipping changelog.gz?

Looks like the updated po4a causes this. I'll investigate
in the next days.

At first sight I'll assume this, after investigation I'll take care of
this.

Ausweisapp is mostly for German speaking users. It contains a man
page, but this man page is provided in English only.

However, translated man pages are provided in manpages-l10n.
Especially the German translation would be helpful for this package,
hence I propose to "suggest" it.

(Currently, there is also a Romanian and Danish translation available,
but I doubt there are very relevan for Ausweisapp users)

Groff.1 works now, but all others listed here still fail. Is this
expected?

(Po4a 0.72 just hit unstable, so I tried them out).

Did you receive my e-mail from this morning, where I compiled the

I currently patch around this with:
sed "s/^\.BI \(.*\)\"c$/.BI \1\"/" | sed "s/^\.BR
\(.*\)\"c$/.BI \1\"/"

However, po4a is about to get fixed (Martin told me (#1036826) he intends
to release later this month). So maybe we wait a few weeks and
potentially this bug can be closed without any further action from
your side.

I checked with the documentation base from manpages-l10n. The
following pages are failing (with the current po4a):

* groff (as reported)
* credentials.7 (as of Debian unstable)
* mkosi.1 (only from OpenSUSE tumbleweed, page attached (compressed))
* afmtodit.1 (as of Debian unstable)

* And it also fail(ed) in mkpasswd.1 (as of Debian unstable), see

Bug#1070242: tracker.debian.org: Removal information not useful

2024-05-02 Thread Helge Kreutzmann
Package: tracker.debian.org
Severity: normal

how-can-i-help informs me regularly about packages needing help. Often
(which is not part of this bug report) this information is outdated,
i.e. the package to be removed is no longer removed.

Today, I got informed that several games are removed from Testing, e.g.
pingus. So I followed the link and went to
https://tracker.debian.org/pkg/pingus

Ok, there I get the information:
The package has not entered testing even though the 5-day delay is over. Check
why.

Which links me to
https://qa.debian.org/excuses.php?package=pingus

However, this page does *not* give any reason:
Migration status for pingus (- to 0.7.6-6): BLOCKED: Rejected/violates
migration policy/introduces a regression

Here nothing tells me what policy entry is violated or which
regeression is about to occur.

Then
Issues preventing migration:

Nothing here, execpt that piuparts tested ok, which I don't think is a
problem.

The last line is
Remove hint for (transitive) dependency: sdl-mixer1.2

Now I go (manually) to
https://tracker.debian.org/pkg/sdl-mixer1.2

Here I see that a removal is scheduled (but has not happened!), again
"Check why" / https://qa.debian.org/excuses.php?package=sdl-mixer1.2
only tells me that a removal is about to happen (Removal request
by auto-removals), but not why. It even tells me that the most recent
upload is closing a bug.

This is very frustrating.

I haven't yet switched over to testing, so maybe the report is
outdated.

I can provide patterns, when necessary.

I'm happy to send patterns in bug reports, when applicable, using
reportbug(1). I use logcheck a lot, and tweak the rulse regularly. But
I'm not fluent at all in autopkgtest or creating merge requests.

Thanks for taking care of it anyhow, I noticed that it is not worth
reporting improvements to logcheck proper.

Ok, I reassign this to rsyslogd

> however, im not sure rsyslog produces those messages about HUP any

Well, it still produces it on my (stable) system:
syslog:2024-04-29T09:20:13.401257+02:00 twentytwo rsyslogd: imuxsock: Acquired
UNIX socket '/run/systemd/journal/syslog' (fd 3) from systemd. [v8.2302.0]

> I do see the one about the unix socket but
> a) i wonder if that's a bug rather that should be hidden?

I have no idea. I did not notice any problem and I read it as a status
message (I don't need to see regularly).

> b) I also think i only see it "startup" (ie only produced when the

> debian usually doesnt add rules to filter startup messages as it tends

Indeed, startup rules are quite helpful, because then I see what was
*different* during startup, i.e. if something got wrong. For servers,
this is not very useful, but for workstatins it is. Btw., the current
rules also deal with startup:
^\w{3} [ :0-9]{11} [._[:alnum:]-]+ kernel: imklog [0-9.]+, log source =
/proc/kmsg started.$
…
^\w{3} [ :0-9]{11} [._[:alnum:]-]+ rsyslogd: \[origin software="rsyslogd"
swVersion="[0-9.]+" x-pid="[0-9]+" x-info="https://www.rsyslog.com"\] start$
…

As long as they follow the man page conventions, I don't mind. And the
fuzzy algorithm hopefully assigns previous and new text, so updates
maybe won't be too hard.

I will perform a new source import on Friday, so cron will be part of
this. Once the translations have cought up, I'll check for any
reported issues and will send them to you (in a new bug report, if
this is not a problem for you).

I hope explaining the test file in this bug is fine as well, because
I'm not sure what to do exactly merge and how.

The test case is groff(1) as it is in Debian unstable:

$ LC_ALL=C po4a-updatepo -f man --no-deprecation --option groff_code=verbatim
--option generated --option
untranslated="}1,Ds,zY,zZ,Ee,ES,dT,FN,NE,NS,EX,EE,Id,rstReportMargin,INDENT,UNINDENT,UN,a.RE,\|"
 --option unknown_macros=untranslated --master groff.1 -M utf-8 -p test.pot
groff.1:2279: (po4a::man)
Escape sequence \c encountered. This is not completely
  handled yet.

And there is no output.

If I do a crude preprocessing, it kind of works:

$ cat groff.1 | perl -p -e 's/\\c\n//' > groff.test.1
$ LC_ALL=C po4a-updatepo -f man --no-deprecation --option groff_code=verbatim
--option generated --option
untranslated="}1,Ds,zY,zZ,Ee,ES,dT,FN,NE,NS,EX,EE,Id,rstReportMargin,INDENT,UNINDENT,UN,a.RE,\|"
 --option unknown_macros=untranslated --master groff.test.1 -M utf-8 -p test.pot
$ wc -l test.pot
3157 test.pot

I hope this helps you working on this, together with the discussion in
this bug.

Thanks for your support!

And it would be wise - I spotted another one:
"update the package database. If unsure, keep the \"false\" option."

The string "false" is probably localized. So probably "keep it disabled"
or "decline this option" is probably better. This and other
improvements are well spotted on debian-l10n-english.

Should I report this separately?

Bug#1036826: Please start handling \c

2024-03-09 Thread Helge Kreutzmann
severity 1036826 important
thanks

Hello Martin,
you have been quite in this discussion. \c occurs in more and more man
pages, and currently the build fails for them. In turn, they are no
longer translated.

Could you kindly check if you could add support for "\c" or is there
another workaround?

Thanks for your support!

Greetings

  Helge

I still think asking debian-l10n-english is a good idea, but this is
of course your preference.

Well, it does this for all translations. It would have been nice if
you could have simply included it, then it's easier for us translators
to update it. (Just for next time).

You'll receive the updated de.po probably in a few days (pending
availability of ressources).

Bug#1065636: kwartz-client: Please review debconf template

2024-03-07 Thread Helge Kreutzmann
Source: kwartz-client
Version: 2.1-2
Severity: normal

While translating your debconf messages we noticed quite a few issues
within the debconf template, ranging from spelling error over punctuation
problems up to difficult to understand sentences.

Please ask on debian-l10n-english for a review to fix all issues, as
we are not native speakers.

We found the following issues:

Issue: The wording "is safe" is ambigous, maybe just state (as other tools do
as well): "If unsure, keep the default list."

#. Type: string
#. Description
#: ../kwartz-client.templates:2001
"Please enter the port number of the proxy service. The default value is "
"usually safe."

Issue 1: Missing final full stop
Issue 2: The previous strings do not use "you" in the 2nd sentence, use
coherent wording, avoding "you"

#. Type: boolean
#. Description
#: ../kwartz-client.templates:6001
"When the recommended package unattended-upgrades is installed, APT will run "
"in the background to attempt some automatic upgrades. If unsure, you can "
"safely keep the \"false\" option"

Issue 1: What is "run some automatic update"? Do you mean "When APT updates the
package database"?
Issue 2: Sometimes, "apt" is used, sometimes "APT"?
Issue 3: unpriviledged → unprivileged

#. Type: string
#. Description
#: ../kwartz-client.templates:7001
"When APT will run some automatic update for the package database, a user "
"name is needed to use the proxy service. This user must be unpriviledged. If "
"apt does not need to make automatic upgrades, you can keep the default empty "
"value."

Issue: The previous prompt uses an article, this is inconsistent

#. Type: password
#. Description
#: ../kwartz-client.templates:8001
"Password to access the web:"

Issue: some strong password → a strong password

#. Type: password
#. Description
#: ../kwartz-client.templates:8001
"The unpriviledged user which will be used by APT to access the web needs a "
"password. It must be some strong password. If apt does not need to make "
"automatic upgrades, you can keep the default empty value."

Simple answer: No.

In the end, man pages are transformed into groff and this is what we
get, and our toolchain po4a handles it quite nicely. Actually,
translators do not see groff at all, but some pseudo language they are
familiar with. (Thats why I had to double check my groff proposals, I
hardly see groff except when i discuss the issues in the man pages of
groff themselves …)

From my POV it is not necessary. As said earlier, I think the context
is sufficient, translators can always build the entire (translated)
file to check and shorter paragraphs are easier to handle and reuse.

> This would mean writing sensible paragraphs, with lines of seventy or
> more characters, containing simple text and elements marked by tags like

In the end, this is up to you and we translators follow suite. Please
note, howver, that not all translations are maintained. Currently we
have (partial) translations for ko, fr, pl, fi, ro, de and id. There
are no active translators for ko, fi and id, and I'm not sure how fast
the translators for fr and pl will pick it up.

So from my POV I would suggest to keep them as is, unless the pain is
really large or you intend to add/update lots of content.

Yes, I see your point. And if you were to write this from scratch, I
would suggest doing so.

Ok, I see. Then my points from above a moot, if changes are planned or
underway at many places.

Ideally it is the first version which stopped shipping the German man
pages. Maybe you can browse your git history? It's good for partial
upgrades, though in the end I simply accept what you will choose.

Well, this would be a good idea, to choose roughly the same day, to
avoid uninstallable situations for people living on unstable or testing.

I'm intending to prepare the next upstream release (and then
immediately the Debian release) on 2024-03-23.

If this is inconvenient for you, we can wait until April. I simply
keep the German man pages in deletion (as I did with previous
versions) and then I release -2 on a date more convenient to you (and
then ship the German man pages).

Greetings

Hello Steve,
ghostscript used to contain German man pages, however, they were not
properly maintained. As detailed in [1] ghostscript removed the
German man pages from its git repository on January 4th 2023.

So the files are gone since Version 10.01.0rc1.

I imported them into manpages-de and will start shipping them with the
next release.

As per transition rules [2] you will need to add
Breaks: manpages-l10n (<4.22)
in your debian/control.

I will then add

Yes, given that I could not reach upstream, I only reported those
issues which were actually present in the Debian version. I don't know
when and how I can report the rest.

That's usual, but po4a transforms this in a more friendly format for
us translators.

That's fine, don't worry. If in doubt we can always build the full
translated page and read it for consisteny. And small paragraphs are
usually better to handle and, potentially, reuse.

Yes, and this is what should be corrected.

I'm not very good (if at all) at groff, by I think
the following might work:
.B \-L
.I loglevel

or even
.BI \-L loglevel

You put it in Italics, but the convention (see man-pages(7) and
man(7)) is to use bold, so this one is simply:

.B \-h

First thanks for your ultra fast response - this is extraordinary
help already. And for your verbose questions, which make it easier for
me to respond.

I think most of the report boils down that you update the patches by
using .B instead of .I or sometimes .BI

I hope this explains it better.

Greetings

   Helge

P.S. And since there is probably little changes in cron nowadays, most
likely few if none further reports from my side…

Bug#1065356: Issues in man pages of cron

2024-03-03 Thread Helge Kreutzmann
Package: cron
Version: 3.0pl1-186
Severity: minor
Tags: patch
X-Debbugs-CC: mario.blaetterm...@gmail.com

Dear Debian cron maintainer,
the manpage-l10n project maintains a large number of translations of
man pages both from a large variety of sources (including cron) as
well for a large variety of target languages.

During their work translators notice different possible issues in the
original (english) man pages. Sometimes this is a straightforward
typo, sometimes a hard to read sentence, sometimes this is a
convention not held up and sometimes we simply do not understand the
original.

We use several distributions as sources and update regularly (at
least every 2 month). This means we are fairly recent (some
distributions like archlinux also update frequently) but might miss
the latest upstream version once in a while, so the error might be
already fixed. We apologize and ask you to close the issue immediately
if this should be the case, but given the huge volume of projects and
the very limited number of volunteers we are not able to double check
each and every issue.

Secondly we translators see the manpages in the neutral po format,
i.e. converted and harmonized, but not the original source (be it man,
groff, xml or other). So we cannot provide a true patch (where
possible), but only an approximation which you need to convert into
your source format.

Finally the issues I'm reporting have accumulated over time and are
not always discovered by me, so sometimes my description of the
problem my be a bit limited - do not hesitate to ask so we can clarify
them.

I'm now reporting the errors for your project. If future reports
should use another channel, please let me know.

(Btw., do you have a working e-mail address of upstream?)

This is also the case in 4.21.0-2~bpo12+1

>* What outcome did you expect instead?
> man page in german language
>* version 4.18.1-1~bpo11+1 works as desired

If you look at the version in 4.18.1-1~bpo11+1 you see:
scanf, fscanf, sscanf, vscanf, vsscanf, vfscanf - Anpassung des Eingabeformats

I.e. a single man page was provided for many functions. If you look at
the latest version (post 4.21, but the change is minor, if any):
sscanf, vsscanf \- input string format conversion

This means these two functions got their own man page, which is not
yet translated.

I can put this on my (long) plate, but this is definitly post 4.22,
i.e. I might make it for 4.23, scheduled end of June (and subsequently
backported to stable, but due to the summer this might not happen
before early August).

If you need this translation more urgent please ask on
debian-l10n-german if someone has capabilities to handle this in the
next ~ 3 weeks, then it could be part of 4.22 (and the subsequent
backport), so if you use backports you could get it shortly after
Easter.

Greetings

 Helge

No, quite the contrary, the macro should be included, i.e. strings

the graphics appears in english.

I'll check them. I vaguely remember that we tried something many years

This is *really* low priority, but mayb its easy/simple.

manpages-l10n hase one man page with groff graphics. The graphics are
included in the macros .PS and .PE which are stripped out from the
translated set.

Maybe the strings within this macros could be added to the translated
set?

Thanks for the update.

Based on what is in git now (I just updated the German translation)
this is now described quite well for the standard package. And yes, so
this bug can be closed when 0.70 (?) hits unstable.

Not related to this bug, but the basis for my bug report:
The workflow using po4a is appears quite orthogonal to manpage-l10n
needs. I could roughty conceive how (parts of) such an implemenation
could look like. So if 2030 comes closer and the depreciation is not
lifted, I might need to work this out and hope that it both works and
the runtime is not too bad.

Greetings and thanks for maintaining po4a

Thanks for clarification, I wasn't aware of this.

Well, it happend yesterday, and today again. But since they don't use
the BTS, the bug could be closed.

How should I properly report this if/once it appears again?

Greetings

Bug#1060192: Acknowledgement (tracker.debian.org: SSL connection extremely slow and sometimes timing out)

2024-01-07 Thread Helge Kreutzmann
Hello,
shortly after reporting this issue the speed is up to normal again.
This is something I observed yesterday as well.

On my side I did not notice any change.

For the record: I started observing this around 05:40 CET today (when
my script hit the Debian servers) until roughly 11:30 CET or so today,
when the speed returned to normal).

Greetings

   Helge

Yesterday and today connections to package.debian.org is *extremely*
slow, sometimes running into timeouts (failing). My scripts ran last
ime Sat Dec 9 17:01:56 2023 +0100 without issues.

Example with wget:

When it succeeds, this take ages:

I observere this similarly with other clients, e.g. links.

Other https site(s) work fine, e.g.

This causes a data collection script of mine, which usually runs in a
few minutes, to take hours (and still be incomplete).

I don't know how to get more information, links does not offer a
verbose switch and for wget I don't see more than the information
posted. I'm happy to provide more information if you tell me which.

Thanks a lot.

I took the liberty to triage the manpage bugs, hope this helps.

So we have a resolution for the "main" pages.

Filesystems come (and go), so probably an complete and exhaustive list
is not possible in one place.

Given this, I propose to close this bug.

If further file systems should be mentioned in filesystems.5, then
please report them individually and they can be reviewed on a case by
case basis.

Also, it is probably best to contact upstream directly and not using
Debian as proxy. Upstream is just one e-mail (and a CC) away:
E-Mail a...@kernel.org and CC linux-...@vger.kernel.org

Greetings

  Helge

I just double checked - this is contained in the latest upstream
release (i.e. man-pages 6.05.01), so you can close this bug on your
next upload.
