Bug#559576: metacity: Window bar events go to wrong window

2009-12-05 Thread Michael Burschik
Package: metacity
Version: 1:2.28.0-2
Severity: normal

When I use the close window button of the window bar, the window manager closes
a different window. When I double-click the window bar in order to maximize a
window, the window manager raises a different window and maximizes that. I'm
not sure which window receives the event instead of the one that should, but
it might be the one that was raised previously. I generally maximize all my
windows and cycle through them with ALT-TAB.

Does this section of the Lenny release-notes help ?
http://debian.org/releases/lenny/i386/release-notes/ch-information.fr.html#no-sound

Best regards.

Thanks for the info. The section is not very helpful. First of all,
Debian doesn't seem to ship alsaconf. The modules snd_pcm_oss and
snd_mixer_oss are loaded (and I don't know why), but that doesn't seem
to be the problem. The other things are okay.

My problem isn't so much that sound is broken (it isn't), but that some
new feature always resets the master volume to zero on reboot, and I
have to change it manually.

Bug#528913: upgrade-reports: Total loss of sound

2009-05-16 Thread Michael Burschik
Package: upgrade-reports
Severity: normal

After upgrades on May 13, sound suddenly stopped working because the master
setting of the ALSA mixer had been muted. Phonon is among the packages I
installed on
May 13, but I can't say whether that is the package responsible. I have
appended a
list of all packages installed at that time.

Bug#516429: update-manager: error message is useless

2009-02-21 Thread Michael Burschik

When running the smart upgrade feature of the update-manager, I get the
following error message:

Bug#492601: unable to use m17n with anki

2008-11-16 Thread Michael Burschik

Andreas Bombe wrote:

Could you please test if the Hindi/Devanagari input method issue is
still applicable to a Debian version of anki later than 0.9.6-1? Or
better yet if this is an actual anki bug? (Does it also happen on a
fresh test account or a different installation?)

I just tried with version 0.9.7.8, and the problem remains. When I try
to edit a card, I can not enter Devanagari characters. At the same time,
I can enter characters in a Gnome Terminal, or in thunderbird, however.

Sorry, but I am not going to install a fresh system to help track down
this bug. It is not that important to me.

Bug#493877: emacs22: Devanagari not displayed

2008-08-05 Thread Michael Burschik
Package: emacs22
Version: 22.2+2-3
Severity: normal

I have set up emacs to display Devanagari as described in emacswiki.
However, this does not work as expected.

The Devanagari characters in the HELLO file are not displayed. If I
set the input method to devanagari-itrans, I can enter text, but it
is not displayed (only boxes are displayed). If I save the buffer and
open it with another editor, it contains the Devanagari characters I
entered. If I kill the buffer and find the very same file in emacs,
the characters are also displayed (although the glyphs are not correct).

Bug#493371: abiword: Abiword starts up with ridiculously small font

2008-08-02 Thread Michael Burschik
Package: abiword
Version: 2.6.4-4
Severity: normal

When I start up abiword, the font used is too small to see anything (maybe
one point), although the toolbar shows Times New Roman 12-point. I can
switch to some other font and work as usual. If I press Ctrl-space, the
font display in the toolbar switches to Times 12-point and the font used
is again illegibly small.

Neither KWord nor OpenOffice Writer offer Times or Times New Roman as
font choices, although OpenOffice Writer initially displays Times New Roman
in the toolbar. Abiword does, however, offer both fonts in the font selection
box, and if I choose one of them, the font is again illegibly small.

Bug#492601: unable to use m17n with anki

2008-07-27 Thread Michael Burschik
Package: anki
Version: 0.9.6-1
Severity: important

I have configured my desktop to optionally use the m17n-hi-itrans input method
for Hindi/Devanagari. This works fine in AbiWord and OpenOffice, for example,
but not for anki. I have configured my deck to use Lohit Devanagari for the
Hindi field of my cards, but I can't tell whether the setting is having any
effect. I also tried m17n-hi-phonetic, but that did not work either.

Bug#488375: grub-probe hangs

2008-06-28 Thread Michael Burschik
Package: grub
Version: 0.97-41
Severity: important

When trying to install the latest kernel update, the command
   /bin/bash /usr/sbin/update-grub 2.6.25-2-amd64 /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.25-2-amd64
hangs indefinitely. After some checks, it becomes clear that the command
   grub-probe --device-map=/boot/grub/device.map -t device /
is responsible. It is trying to open /dev/fd0. There is no such device, nor
was there ever one on this machine. However, the kernel update never
failed before. Removing the offending entry from device.map seems to fix
the problem.

I get the error message that /dev/hdf3 can not be mounted. The correct name of

Package: gimp

I tried to open a location using various valid URLs. I was able to download the
files and open them with gimp, so the images themselves were not the problem.

This is an automatic notification regarding your Bug report
which was filed against the linux-image-2.6.22-2-amd64 package:

#443197: linux-image-2.6.22-2-amd64: Kernel sometimes fails to detect ide
 disk correctly

It has been closed by maximilian attems [EMAIL PROTECTED].

Their explanation is attached below. If this explanation is
unsatisfactory and you have not received a better one in a separate
message then please contact maximilian attems [EMAIL PROTECTED] by replying

I disagree with this assessment. It may not be a kernel bug, but it is a bug
which makes my system unbootable. If you are sure it is not a kernel bug, then
you should reassign the bug to the offending party.

Of course I know about disk labels, but Debian doesn't seem to be using them.
The point is not whether I could fix my system, but why it is broken in the
first place. Furthermore, I am not convinced that the kernel never has
guaranteed device ordering. This may be true today, now that we have udev, but
it would have broken countless systems during the last sixteen years. Oh, and
incidentally, this has never happened to me before, and I have been using Linux
for fifteen and a half of these sixteen years.

I also object to the dismissive manner in which this bug report was rejected.
If Debian does not want to receive any bug reports from its users, or in fact
wishes to reduce its user base, then this is the correct way to continue.
Otherwise it is not.

Regards

Michael Burschik

Bug#443197: linux-image-2.6.22-2-amd64: Kernel sometimes fails to detect ide disk correctly

2007-09-19 Thread Michael Burschik
Package: linux-image-2.6.22-2-amd64
Version: 2.6.22-4
Severity: critical
Justification: breaks the whole system

The kernel sometimes fails to detect or name the ide disk hdb correctly and
calls it hdf instead
(ok, this might be a udev problem). The system then is unbootable. The error
occurs about every
third boot. So far rebooting has always fixed the problem. This problem did not
occur with 2.6.18
or 2.6.21. I have not modified udev.rules.

How does this break? The system crypt() function also supports md5 hashes,
AFAIK, so doesn't this Just Work?

Yes, you are right. It does Just Work (TM). Provided that the
LDAP-Server was linked against glibc2 and that it actually uses the
glibc2 implementation of crypt (and not that of OpenSSL, for example).
So this is not really a Debian bug, but it will break on any system that
uses a crypt implementation without GNU extensions. Sorry about that.

Bug#363025: Non-root SCSI disk not mounted

2006-04-17 Thread Michael Burschik

Package: base
Severity: important

As S36discover is run after S35mountall.sh, my non-root
SCSI disk was not mounted at boot time. Moving discover
to S32discover resolved the issue.
