Bug#1066034: tech-ctte: proposed constitution fix and social contract chg to make documentation accessible to all people

# The DSC needs to become meaningful

Chuck Zmudzinski filed a bug report saying that the Debian Social
Contract (DSC) is “meaningless”:

  https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=1028557

He is correct in the sense that there is no enforcement mechanism. At
the same time, the Debian Constitution (DC) also neglects to
acknowledge jurisdiction over DSC enforcement. This is a bug. I think
it’s assumed that the technical committee is tasked with DSC
enforcement. But this should be explicit and without guesswork.

Is the DSC a guaranteed protection whereby non-compliances have a
complaint mechanism and corrective procedure? Or is the DSC actually
intended to be comparable to a meaningless pushover license?

# Transparency

In a sense, the transparency problem is joined with a dog food
problem. Consider ¶3:

> “3. We will not hide problems
>
> We will keep our entire bug report database open for public view at
> all times. Reports that people file online will promptly become
> visible to others.”

(off-topic bug: “others” should be changed to “the public”,
but security bugs should be exempt from “promptly”)

Problems in the DSC and calls for improvement thereof should itself be
a transparent process. It was unclear to me where to submit this bug
herein: tech-ctte, qa.debian.org, or general?

The DSC shows “Version 1.2 ratified on October 1st, 2022.” But where
and how? The public should have transparent access to the
discussions, decisions, and changes.

# DSC change proposal: make documentation accessible to ALL people

There is a growing problem of documentation being locked into walled
gardens which discriminate against several demographics of people,
such as blind people being forced to solve a CAPTCHA that requires
vision. The access-restricted documentation problem is particularly
rampant on the Linux Mint and (ironically) Ubuntu projects. Debian
does not proactively impose any walled gardens on people at the moment
but whenever a package makes reference to external documentation
served from an access-restricted location, Debian passively allows
this. Debian can (and should) do better than this. The problem and
proposal is described in detail here:

  * https://linux.community/post/649372
  *
https://kbin.social/m/debian/t/889598/Debian-Social-Contract-Should-all-Debian-users-inclusively-have-open

Those two links ↑ give two different views of the same article. I
reference both because of a minor formatting bug in kbin.

Bug#918818: Installed freesh 'Buster' but it always boot into intramfs

2019-01-09 Thread Tech Knowledge
Package: kernel
Version: 4.19.0-1-amd64

I installed debian testing(buster). It installed the updated kernel
4.19.0-1-amd64 automatically.
But it always was booting into initramfs where i was not able to any
command. But the last Kernel booting worked.

The fix was as following:
1. Added ahci driver if in physical machine or mtpspi if in vmware
workstation and sd_mod to /etc/initramfs-tools/modules.
2. Then regenerated initrd with update-initramfs.

Bug#862917: Warzone 2100 3.2.3

2018-01-15 Thread TONY TECH
Hi, I have previously played warzone 2100 a lot and I have come across a
number of bugs which i'm happy to help you identify them.

I currently am playing the campaigns on hard and have noted several bugs
which I would consider a hindrance to game play...

1. It seems as though the enemy technology is unavailable (error message
states technology not researched) therefore cannot produce some units. I
previously have played the entire campaign a few times over and on hard but
now missions that would usually be very difficult to complete take minutes
and i'm certain it is due to the enemy AI not being able to produce new
units

2. Sometimes saved games become corrupt and the game freezes requiring to
go back to an earlier saved game. usually at the beginning of the mission
seems to be ok. I suspect it is due to errors received during game play
such as the AI not being able to use certain technology to produce units is
likely the cause of the freezes...

I think those are the main issues that happen with every mission.

There have been other random occurrences with the game
- Cursor marks staying on the screen leaving traces of clicks...
- Common error but existed well before new releases which is the units
becoming unselectable when assigned to commander...
- Sometimes the assigned units to a commander did not update even though
they were assigned to the commander. just looked like the UI not update
correctly
- Units often looked like they were not doing anything... Anti-Air units
assigned to commander refuse to fire
- Repair bots become sitting dodos... Eventually they just stop and stay
where they are and not follow the commander

I suspect the changes made to the commander controls may be influencing
this (Used to have range of combat like optimal, short and long range
etc...)

You probably are aware of these issues

Anyway, hope this helps

Kind Regards
Tony

Hi Bastian,

we know about the recommendation to not to sync directly from debian
(ftp..debian.org) sites, but now we need to be sure that the archive is up
to date. We are picking another mirrors which will meet our needs.

Our archive is already synced four times a day to match twice a day update
frequency.

Did you find any other problem with our archive ?

Control: retitle -1 mirror submission for mirror.nl.10gbps.io
[upstream-round-robin update-frequency]
Control: tags -1 moreinfo

Hi Tomas

Thank you for mirroring Debian.

We recommend mirrors not sync directly from service aliases such as
ftp..debian.org (only http is guaranteed to be available at
ftp..d.o sites). Maybe change your config to sync from a specific
site.

Please update four times a day to match the archive update frequency.

Regards,
Bastian

2017-08-08 Thread CDN77.com - Tech
##- Please type your reply above this line -##

Hi Bastian,

we know about the recommendation to not to sync directly from debian
(ftp..debian.org) sites, but now we need to be sure that the archive is up
to date. We are picking another mirrors which will meet our needs.

Our archive is already synced four times a day to match twice a day update
frequency.

Did you find any other problem with our archive ?

Regards,
Jaroslav

Regards,
Bastian

Bug#686543: netcat.c:1797:16: error: expected ')' before 'DEBIAN_VERSION'

2012-09-02 Thread Tech
Package: netcat-traditional
Version: 1.10-40
Severity: serious
Justification: fails to build from source (but built successfully in the past)

The source package `netcat-traditional' does not build, make dies this way:

  $ make linux
  make -e nc XFLAGS='-DLINUX' STATIC=-static
  make[1]: Entering directory `/tmp/build/netcat-1.10'
  gcc -O -DLINUX -static -o nc netcat.c
  netcat.c: In function 'helpme':
  netcat.c:1797:16: error: expected ')' before 'DEBIAN_VERSION'
  make[1]: *** [nc] Error 1
  make[1]: Leaving directory `/tmp/build/netcat-1.10'
  make: *** [linux] Error 2

I am not very familiar with the Debian package build process. In debian/rules
a DFLAGS='... -DDEBIAN_VERSION...' is used, if I try that one, the error ist
the same:

  $ make linux DFLAGS='-DDEBIAN_VERSION=foo'
  ...
  netcat.c: In function 'helpme':
netcat.c:1783:3: error: expected ')' before 'foo'
  ...

So maybe DEBIAN_VERSION usually contains some magic to concatenate the strings
with the constant (rather not), or this patch is broken.

Cheers,

Tech

Bug#668876: fetch from snapshot.debian.org if package not found.

2012-04-15 Thread FOSS tech. support

Package: aptitude
Version: 0.6.6-1
Severity: wishlist

I suggest, when aptitude doesn't find a package in all mirrors, it
should automatically look out in snapshot.debian.org to fetch the package.

The same should be implemented in all apt implementations like software
centre (it uses APT python right?), apt-get, synaptic etc...

Hi,

I don't think that's a good idea:

It circumvents the package signing as AFAIK APT and friends just look
on the signature of the package lists and hashsums, not on the
individual package signature -- that's just done before including a
package in the archive.

Additionally, if a package is not on the mirrors, but on snapshot.d.o,
it's very likely outdated and shouldn't be installed for that reason
unless explicitly wanted.

And snapshot.d.o is likely not capable of coping with the load this
would cause as it is not meant to be a mirror.

OTOH adding some user interface for explicity retrieving packages from
snapshot.d.o shouldn't hurt. But that depends a lot on the actual user
interface and is hence not likely generalised (except may be the
downloading backend).

So it'll be disabled by default.

I've found this to be problematic on desktop systems where upgrading
requires HUGE volumes of downloads and sometimes breaks the system (I
know testing is testing...), so the user may prefer not to upgrade.

Instead of directly fetching, I think links to snapshot.debian.org
should be added in source.list automatically... but by default this'll
be disabled. What do you think?

The same should be implemented in all apt implementations like
software centre (it uses APT python right?), apt-get, synaptic
etc...

If that's really the case (see discussion above), then this bug better
should be filed against APT itself and not aptitude.

Regards, Axel

I'll do so.

Bug#668939: conky: ``format_human_readable no'' causes wrong values

2012-04-15 Thread Tech
Package: conky
Version: 1.8.1-6
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

when using Conky with a simple .conkyrc like this one:

$ cat ~/.conkyrc
use_xft yes
xftfont DejaVu Sans Mono:size=12
out_to_console yes
format_human_readable no #yes

TEXT
/usr ${fs_used /usr}/${fs_size /usr}
/var ${fs_used /var}/${fs_size /var}
$

I get those lines both in console and the X11-window:

/usr -2147483648/-2147483648
/var -2147483648/-2147483648

which is definitely wrong. If format_human_readable yes is set (that's the
default), the output is like expected:

/usr 5.08GiB/9.97GiB
/var 70.1GiB/79.9GiB

so the correct output would be something like (if bc is right):

/usr 5454608465.92B/10705205985.28B
/var 75269301862.4B/85791971737.6B

Those values are greater than my INT_MAX. A quick look in the code showed
fs.c:250 is using human_readable() in conky.c:596, which uses space_print():

conky.c:604
605 if (!format_human_readable) {
606 spaced_print(buf, size, %d, 6, round_to_int(num));

The INT_MAX num becomes 'int' via round_to_int() (common.c:447), but
obviously a greater-than-int value can't somehow become integer. So it's
negative and we have the strange output.

Bug#665190: wireshark: Wireshark hangs when clicking on any button in interfaces selection box

2012-03-22 Thread tech

Hello

First, if you don't agree with a bug's resolution please respond in
the bug itself and don't open a new one.
As the first bug reported was in the wireshark/1.0.2-3+lenny14 version
and the new one in 1.0.2-3+lenny16 I thought it was useful to report a
new bug

Actually the package is still usable, the interface can be selected
from the command line.
As I never could go further than the dialog box, I never realized that
it was only the interface choice which was buggy. Thank you very much
for this info : I have a big problem in my network and I wasn't able
to diagnose it as wireshark was always hanging. Now I can investigate.

It seems that you use oldstable and stable package repositories mixed.
Please upgrade to stable to get the latest, fixed wireshark package.

I can't upgrade my debian fully to stable because I use and I want to
keep on using KDE 3, in the squeeze release, only kde 4.x is available.

Thank you very much for your answer and for the workaround you gave me
to use Wireshark.

2011-02-15 Thread Tech Nux
Hi,

I found an easier solution, Xen dom0 on squeeze / DomU on lenny the
dist-upgrade and reboot failed. :

First mount the /boot partition of your domU to the dom0 :
 xm block-attach 0 phy:/dev/vm/squeeze xvda w
mount /dev/xvda1 /mnt

Then edit /mnt/grub/menu.lst, and comment thoses line :

#title Chainload into GRUB 2
#root (hd0,0)
#kernel /grub/core.img
#
#title
Ä
#root
#
#title When you have verified GRUB 2 works, you can use this
command to
#root
#
#title complete the upgrade: upgrade-from-grub-legacy
#root
#
#title
Ä
#root

It seems Pygrub on lenny and squeeze doesn't understant this menu, so
comment it. Umount partition and disk :
 xm block-detach 0 xvda

See above.

  Volatile-upstream: debian.mirror.cambrium.nl

You should sync from an ftp.*.debian.org host, it's more reliable.
You can try ftp.nl.debian.org or ftp.be.debian.org.

I have switched to ftp.nl.debian.org

  CDImage-upstream: debian.mirror.cambrium.nl
  Updates: twice

The archive is now updated 4 times a day, and this frequency may be
increase in the future. That's one of the reason for our preference for
 push sync, see http://www.debian.org/mirror/push_mirroring

Updates were already set to 4 times a day, I have raised the number of
updates to 6 times a day for each part of the mirror.

Because of our company security policy, we can not set up push sync at
this moment. I agree this may help with the updates and we will
investigate the possibility to provide a way to allow push sync without
breaking our security policy.

Yes, please do.

Bug#573335: [MIRROR #ULN-846457]: Re: Bug#573335: mirror submission for mirror.sov.uk.goscomb.net

2010-04-21 Thread Goscomb Tech Mirrors
Hi

It seems there is issue with the cdimage mirroring:
 http://mirror.sov.uk.goscomb.net/debian-cd/ contains itself
 http://mirror.sov.uk.goscomb.net/debian-cd/debian-cd/

Fixed

IPv6: yes

I cannot access your server in v6, while some v6 routers at goscomb
 appear on the path.

Fixed, apologies. New ip6tables rules were added earlier today.

Push is advised, if you can affort a incoming ssh trigger (forced to one
 command):
You can find the key of ftp.uk.d.o at
 http://hands.com/~archvsync/free-ftppush-id.pub and contact at 'phil'
 behind hands.com domain.

SSH is firewalled from outside traffic; i'd prefer not to open this filter.

Kind Regards

Dan

Bug#457044: origin of this bug

2008-02-18 Thread tech

Hello,
I think I've found a clue about this bug :
the man page of kernel-img.conf says :

do_symlinks

By default, the kernel image post installation script shall create or
update the /vmlinuz and /vmlinuz.old symbolic links. This is true if
a /vmlinuz link already exists, however, in absence of /vmlinuz, the
script looks to see if this configuration file exists. If it does
not, the configuration script asks the user whether to create the
symbolic link, and stashes the answer in a newly created
/etc/kernel-img.conf. If the configuration file already exists, and
if this option is set to No, no symbolic link is ever created. This
for people who have other means of booting their machines, and do not
like the symbolic links cluttering up their / directory. Defaults to
Yes.

So I tried to delete /vmlinuz and /initrd then I ran dpkg-reconfigure
linux-image-2.6.22-3-686

I got :

inding valid ramdisk creators.
Using mkinitramfs-kpkg to build the ramdisk.
Not updating initrd symbolic links since we are being updated/reinstalled
(2.6.22-6.lenny1 was configured last, according to dpkg)
Not updating image symbolic links since we are being updated/reinstalled
(2.6.22-6.lenny1 was configured last, according to dpkg)

So it seems that even with do_symlinks=yes in /etc/kernel-img.conf the
installation script doesn't check the existence of symlinks in / and
doesn't create them if they don't exist. In this case the system won't
be able to boot anymore

Bug#459701: (no subject)

2008-01-08 Thread tech

I've found a turn around :
Starting Iceape with profile manager, I created a new clean profile and
Iceape started correctly : menues came back and no more errors appeared
at the bottom except that the terminal window showed : NoScript
disabled on this profile. Then I switched to my default profile and
Iceape seemed to work normally, then I stopped Iceape and restarted
directly with my default profile, but in this case the problem came back.

Bug#451346: (pas de sujet)

2007-11-19 Thread tech

 Very interesting issue !

Actually, the changecom is deliberate, as we want the # lines to be
 passed through the m4 processing and into the resultant sendmail.cf;
who treats the # lines as comments.

The next odd thing is that the problem disappeared when you deleted
lines 18 and 19... but that leaves line 20 - which also has `...`
in it; why did it work with that line still there ?
I think this perhaps because there's a in the middle of the line 20
which could be parsed differently

Next up, is that I am running the same level of m4, and my sendmail.mc
starts the same (has the same three lines). What version of sendmail
 are you running?
I'm using sendmail 8.14.1-9

Can you send me your sendmail.mc and any include() files it
references (sans anything in /usr/share/sendmail/cf - unless you've
 changed them) ?

I should peruse the distributed mc/m4 files for `...` in comments,
but first I want to understand why this is failing for you, but not
for everyone I'm expecting an edit elsewhere went amiss.

I must explain that I discovered this problem while trying to add some
features to sendmail using the sendmail webmin module so I first
reported this bug to webmin :

https://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detailaid=1828205group_id=17457atid=117457

It is possible that this module doesn't use the same default files as
other debian tools.

there's another strange thing when I ran in shell as jcameron asked me :

cd /usr/share/sendmail/cf/m4 ; m4 /usr/share/sendmail/cf/m4/cf.m4
/usr/share/sendmail/cf/debian/sendmail.mc

I got the error, and it is the same for
/usr/share/sendmail/cf/debian/submit.mc

but when I run
cd /etc/mail ; m4 sendmail.mc or m4 submit.mc
I get no error with the same files

Bug#364989: error bzip2: Compressed file ends unexpectedly using apt-get update

2006-04-27 Thread tech
Package: apt
Version: 0.6.43.3
Severity: important

When using apt-get update, I often get this kind of error messages :

Atteint ftp://ftp.fr.debian.org stable/main Packages
99% [Packages bzip2 0] [Requête] [Requête] [Requête]
bzip2: Compressed file ends unexpectedly;
perhaps it is corrupted? *Possible* reason follows.
bzip2: Inappropriate ioctl for device
Input file = (stdin), output file = (stdout)

It is possible that the compressed file(s) have become corrupted.
You can use the -tvv option to test integrity of such files.

You can use the `bzip2recover' program to attempt to recover
data from undamaged sections of corrupted files.

Err ftp://ftp.debian.org testing/updates/main Packages
Le sous-processus bzip2 a renvoyé un code d'erreur (2)

when this occurs, the only way I've found to get the update info is to modify
my /etc/apt/sources.list by choosing others ftp server for the corrupted file,
this works for some time then the same problem occurs using the other server,
so I change my config again...

what is very strange is that there's no connect command in the code, and the

and this function definition is in the same file so it should not be a problem
to find as it's not an include
