I'm sorry I forgot to subscribe to this bug. Yes, upgraded today from
1.0.29 to 1.1.0 and sound works. Current configuration:

$ dpkg -l | grep 'asound\|alsa-utils'
ii  alsa-utils  1.1.0-2 amd64
ii  libasound2:amd641.1.0-1 amd64
ii  libasound2-data 1.1.0-1 all
ii  libasound2-plugins:amd641.1.0-1 amd64

Although I did not need to restart to get sound working, only upgrading
libasound2-data without upgrading libasound2 still breaks the sound. I
am not sure if this should be considered a bug though.

Alvaro

I can't reproduce with a very similar soundcard. Could you please
post the output of

$ ls -al $HOME/.pulse
$ ls -al $HOME/.asoundrc
$ ls -al /etc/asound*

Thanks for cooperation

Reopening, as the bug still exists. I stated in the original bug that I
restarted pulseaudio to work around the problem; that I had to do so to
get audio working again simply confirms the problem. The bug was
"Upgrade causes pulseaudio to fail until restarted". Upgrading should
not break a running system.

As far as I can tell, upgrading ALSA broke the running instance of
pulseaudio. That suggests some compatibility issue between the old and
new versions. If no better way can be found to solve the problem, then
at the very least this would need a warning to restart services
depending on ALSA, such as pulseaudio. But ideally whatever caused the
breakage should be fixed instead.

Not needed, as your sound works now

As mentioned in the bug, I ended up restarting pulseaudio, which made
this error stop and got audio working again. Did you want the output of
this command on my current working system?

Reproducing the problem would likely require downgrading and
re-upgrading alsa.

Could you please run as root:

# alsactl init

Did you managed to get sound working with a complete install of
1.1.0 packages?

Is there any reason to not upgrade alsa-lib to 1.1.0?

Bug#813446: Upgrade causes pulseaudio to fail until restarted

2016-02-06 Thread Rock Storm
Dear Maintainer,

Upgrading packages "alsa-utils" and "libasound2-plugins" seems to make
no harm. Sound breaks when upgrading libasound2-data:

"Sound-works" configuration:
$ dpkg -l | grep 'asound\|alsa-utils'
ii  alsa-utils  1.1.0-2 amd64
ii  libasound2:amd641.0.29-1amd64
ii  libasound2-data 1.0.29-1all
ii  libasound2-plugins:amd641.1.0-1 amd64

"No-sound" configuration:
$ dpkg -l | grep 'asound\|alsa-utils'
ii  alsa-
utils   1.1.0-2 amd64
ii  libasound2:amd641.0.29-1
amd64
ii  libasound2-data 1.1.0-1 all
ii  libasound2-
plugins:amd64   1.1.0-1 amd64

Bug#813446: Upgrade causes pulseaudio to fail until restarted

2016-02-01 Thread Josh Triplett
Package: libasound2
Version: 1.1.0-1
Severity: important

I don't know whether this bug lies in libasound2, libasound2-plugins, or
alsa-utils; reporting it here because it seems like the most likely
candidate.

I just upgraded the following packages:

[UPGRADE] alsa-utils:amd64 1.0.29-1+b1 -> 1.1.0-1
[UPGRADE] libasound2:amd64 1.0.29-1 -> 1.1.0-1
[UPGRADE] libasound2-data:amd64 1.0.29-1 -> 1.1.0-1
[UPGRADE] libasound2-plugins:amd64 1.0.29-1 -> 1.1.0-1

Immediately after doing so, pulseaudio started logging the following
error:

Feb 01 20:14:28 x pulseaudio[583]: [alsa-sink-ALC3232 Analog] alsa-sink.c:
Error opening PCM device front:1: Invalid argument
Feb 01 20:14:28 x pulseaudio[583]: [alsa-sink-ALC3232 Analog] alsa-sink.c:
Error opening PCM device front:1: Invalid argument
Feb 01 20:14:30 x pulseaudio[583]: [alsa-sink-ALC3232 Analog] alsa-sink.c:
Error opening PCM device front:1: Invalid argument
Feb 01 20:14:30 x pulseaudio[583]: [alsa-sink-ALC3232 Analog] alsa-sink.c:
Error opening PCM device front:1: Invalid argument

And attempting to play any audio via pulse (for instance, using mpv)
would fail to play audio, and stall out. (The audio didn't just go
silent; pulseaudio didn't accept audio, breaking applications and
causing them to not progress.)

Restarting my session did not fix that problem, because pulseaudio stuck
around and got reused by the next session. I had to kill pulseaudio so
it would respawn, at which point audio started working again.
