Bug#532376: r8169: network buffer overflow
On tiisdei 9 Juny 2009, Ben Hutchings wrote: Package: linux-2.6 Version: 2.6.29-5 Severity: critical Tags: security patch Some or all NICs supported by r8169 seem to ignore the buffer sizes in RX descriptors, and will write up to the global maximum frame size. This means a remote attacker can overflow RX buffers, probably allowing for code injection. This should be fixed by the patch posted in: http://article.gmane.org/gmane.linux.network/130114 This is CVE-2009-1389. The severity of this issue is still debated. Downgrading ghostscript and libgs8 to testing version (8.64~dfsg-1.1) fixes the problem. Thanks for your bugreport. I made an embarrasing error in -6 release. This was fixed today in -7 expected to arrive in unstable in less than 12 hours. This bug is believed to be a dubplicate of 532392, thus force-merging. Bug#532490: phonon-backend-gstreamer dependency problems
Package: phonon-backend-gstreamer Version: 4.3.1-1 Severity: grave Phonon-backend-gstreamer does not install gstreamer0.10-alsa by default resulting in a system that plays KDE4 system sounds but no 3rd party application sounds ( E.G. MPlayer, Xine, Amarok ETC ) on systems that have upgraded from KDE 3.5.x and have only used xine and ARTS for sound. Workaround: manually install gstreamer0.10-alsa from the Debian repositories OR manually install phonon-backend-xine from Debian repositories and select the xine backend from KSystem settingsMultimedia and restart KDE. Expected behavior: phonon-backend-gstreamer should install gstreamer0.10-alsa by default so sound works for the end user. It might no longer apply, although I doubt anything has changed in this area. AFAICT, the purpose of network-admin is fundamentally incompatible with network-manager. network-admin is used by the user to manually configure static networks, whereas network-manager is delegated by the user the overall responsability of network setup. When both are installed and running, user gets the impression that she can configure a static network using network-admin, only to realize that her network magically disappears after a few minutes without any obvious explanation. Please, can you add a Conflicts: network-manager to prevent these situations? Preferably after splitting network-admin in a separate binary package, so that this doesn't make it impossible to use the rest of gnome-system-tools in combination with network-manager. -- System Information: Debian Release: lenny/sid APT prefers stable APT policy: (500, 'stable') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.6.18-5-amd64 Locale: LANG=ca_AD.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=ca_AD.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) ---End Message--- ---BeginMessage--- Source: gnome-system-tools Source-Version: 2.22.1-5 We believe that the bug you reported is fixed in the latest version of gnome-system-tools, which is due to be installed in the Debian FTP archive: gnome-network-admin_2.22.1-5_amd64.deb to pool/main/g/gnome-system-tools/gnome-network-admin_2.22.1-5_amd64.deb gnome-system-tools_2.22.1-5.diff.gz to pool/main/g/gnome-system-tools/gnome-system-tools_2.22.1-5.diff.gz gnome-system-tools_2.22.1-5.dsc to pool/main/g/gnome-system-tools/gnome-system-tools_2.22.1-5.dsc gnome-system-tools_2.22.1-5_amd64.deb to pool/main/g/gnome-system-tools/gnome-system-tools_2.22.1-5_amd64.deb A summary of the changes between this version and the previous one is attached. Bug#531515: ia32-apt-get: breaks dpkg --control (= 1.15.1) and debsums
reopen 531515 14 tag 531515 + patch kthxbye Hi Goswin, I'm sorry, but this bug is back respectively still there. I'm not sure why it did happen again for the first time only today although I dist-upgrade that box at least once a day. But it was reproducable here by calling /usr/bin/debsums --generate=nocheck -sp /var/cache/apt/archives after the upgrade of bzip2 in Sid, either via DPkg::Post-Invoke or manually. François, maybe you can enlighten me in which situations debsums calls dpkg --control and in which not... Although I do think I can reliably reproduce this bug. (See below.) With version 14 the bug now seems to be only an off-by-one bug. I added the following two lines to your dpkg-deb wrapper right after 'set -e': echo $#: $0 $@ set -x Now the output is as follows: # /usr/bin/debsums --generate=nocheck -sp /var/cache/apt/archives 4: /usr/bin/dpkg-deb --control -- /var/cache/apt/archives/bzip2_1.0.5-2_amd64.deb /tmp/gD4mFRK2gm/DEBIAN + case $1 in + case $# in + echo 'Unexpected number of arguments to --control' Unexpected number of arguments to --control + exit 1 debsums: can't extract control info from /var/cache/apt/archives/bzip2_1.0.5-2_amd64.deb So for me it looks as if the two cases for (--control) should be 3 and 4, not 2 and 3, probably because --control is also counted as parameter. The following patch works for me: --- /usr/bin/dpkg-deb 2009-06-04 11:19:02.0 +0200 +++ /usr/bin/dpkg-deb.patched 2009-06-09 18:22:42.0 +0200 @@ -5,8 +5,8 @@ case $1 in (--control) case $# in - 2) DIR=$(pwd)/DEBIAN; break;; 3) DIR=$3; break;; + 4) DIR=$4; break;; *) echo 2 Unexpected number of arguments to --control exit 1;; esac With set -x still enabled I also saw both cases[1], with and without --, so both, 3 and 4 worked for me. (It though later confused dpkg/tar when piping the output of --fsys-tarfile to somewhere... After removing the -x this worked fine again, too.) [1] On calling /usr/bin/debsums --generate=nocheck -sp /var/cache/apt/archives 3: /usr/bin/dpkg-deb --control /var/cache/apt/archives/bzip2_1.0.5-2_amd64.deb /var/lib/dpkg/tmp.ci On calling aptitude reinstall bzip2 4: /usr/bin/dpkg-deb --control -- /var/cache/apt/archives/bzip2_1.0.5-2_amd64.deb /tmp/pS0f3zhYUg/DEBIAN To be sure the bug is gone with my patch, I did the following: Downgrading bzip2 to testing and upgrading again to Sid with dpkg-deb patched as above. This didn't cause the error. After reinstalling version 14 of ia32-apt-get (and therefore removing my patch) and then downgrading bzip2 to testing and upgrading again to Sid caused the bug to reappear in both situations (downgrading and upgrading). The releases newer than -1.1 contain many many improvements. If you are eager to use them (or are even hit by some of the bugs fixed by them), I have unofficial packages available by adding the following to your /etc/apt/sources.list: deb http://debian.jones.dk/ sid ghostscript ...there's also a similar one for Lenny, if you want the improved Ghostscript in an otherwise stable environment. ...and to get ahead of you: No, I do not use backports.debian.org, as that concept is too simple for my taste (no support for chains of backported build-dependencies). The concrete bug has already been filed twice earlier today. Please inspect those for additional hints on workarounds. Bug#532287: cherokee: it doesn't ask to install php5-cgi too
Aldo Maggi dijo [Mon, Jun 08, 2009 at 12:00:24PM +0200]: Package: cherokee Version: 0.99.15-1 Severity: grave Justification: renders package unusable i'm running squeeze , when i've installed cherokee, php5-cgi was not installed but cherokee did not ask for it. if php5-cgi is missing in the system cherokee won't start at all and gives an error concerning the impossibility to launch php-cgi -b /tmp/cherokee-php.socket Hi, I understand upstream is already working on a mechanism that will allow shipping a configuration that does not by default require PHP5, but at the same time is not too complicated on new users. Meanwhile, we added php5-cgi as a recommends: — This means, it is not absolutely needed to run Cherokee (you can disable it from the configuration file), and it is installed by default. The new Cherokee version fixing this problem (0.99.16-1) is on its way to Sid, and it will hit Squeeze in ten days if everything goes as planned. Actually it just includes a copy of version 2 of GPL with no actual headers in the files. I have asked the author of the regex library (Jeff Stuart) about his intentions. André, it seems to me that including the arg_parser code implicitly makes the whole highlight package GPL3+. If that is OK, maybe you could update your licensing statements in the next release. Bug#531419: mpicc segfaults when called by fakeroot
Hi Jeff! Am Montag, den 08.06.2009, 21:08 -0700 schrieb Jeff Squyres: Agreed; fixing the root problem is a better bet. Manuel -- can you ping the fakeroot people? It would be preferable to the method described in that URL. The fakeroot maintainers are in CC, they should have gotten the last message of yours. As for the root cause, I'm still puzzled. I tested it today with the most recent eglic (2.9-13) and an older glibc (2.9-10) provided by Aurelien Jarno against almost all versions of fakeroot available on snapshort.debian.net. Segfaults with all combinations. On the other hand, as I wrote in message #45, it seems to work fine on my Lenny box which has glibc 2.7-18. I will test this version on my unstable box tomorrow. For some reason, fakeroot and Open MPI 1.3.2 don't show issues in the versions in Lenny. I'll also test the fakeroot version in unstable on my Lenny box tomorrow. Not sure if this brings any insight, though. Best regards Manuel signature.asc Description: Dies ist ein digital signierter Nachrichtenteil

Bug#530357: Info received (grub-pc: still can't automatically boot on i386 with dedicate /boot filesystem and / not visible to BIOS)
I tried the grub prob.mod patch posted in the last 24 hours on the svn code grub-pc 1.96+20090608, and at the grub prompt ran: probe -t fs_uuid (hd1,1) which returned the same UUID as appears in the /boot/grub/grub.cfg: menuentry Debian GNU/Linux, linux 2.6.30-rc8-686 { set root=(hd1,1) search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set bfdeb6d6-0b77-4beb-a63d-bdc3e455b8ea linux /vmlinuz-2.6.30-rc8-686 root=/dev/hda7 ro initrd /initrd.img-2.6.30-rc8-686 } However, GRUB2 still won't boot GNU/Linux with the search line claiming that it can't find the device. If I remove the search line I can boot GNU/Linux alright. Regards, Arthur. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-rc-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble?
