Bug#1070067: debian-cd: daily arm64 netinst image: GRUB menu is complex

2024-04-29 Thread Roland Clobus

Package: debian-cd
Version: 3.2.1
Severity: minor
User: debian...@lists.debian.org
Usertags: openqa

Hello maintainers of the arm64 netinst image,

The issue:
Recently I've updated the openQA boot walk test [1] to match the actual
GRUB boot menu for the arm64 netinst image (taken from the daily builds
[2]). It has a very complex structure (up to 5 levels deep) and offers
many similar options in the sub menus.

Is this intentional?

Expected:
The GRUB menu for arm64 is identical to or only slightly different from
the amd64 netinst image.

With kind regards,
Roland Clobus

Bug#1070006: debian-cd: daily arm64 netinst image: GRUB not started in graphical mode

2024-04-28 Thread Roland Clobus

Package: debian-cd
Version: 3.2.1
Severity: minor
User: debian...@lists.debian.org
Usertags: openqa

Hello maintainers of the netinst image,

The issue:
As seen on openQA [1], the GRUB menu for the arm64 netinst image (taken
from the daily builds [2]) does not use the graphical mode, but text
mode instead.

Some sub-menus assume that the graphical mode is active, but issue an
error message: 'error: no video mode activated.' (e.g. 'Accessible dark
contrast installer menu...')

Expected:
GRUB uses the graphical version of the boot menu.

During the miniDebCamp 2024 in Hamburg, ema showed that (at least for
the live-build images) GRUB is able to use the graphical mode correctly.
As a side note, the graphical installer also shows properly, so there
appears to be no problem in using the graphical mode.

With kind regards,
Roland Clobus

Package: debian-cd
Severity: serious

Hi,

During a previous release, I spotted we had two firmware builds, but let
the topic go once I was reassured that was to be expected. For RC 4:

1/43: Starting firmware_bookworm build at 2023-05-27:09:03:53
[…]
9/43: Starting firmware_sid build at 2023-05-27:09:04:01
[…]
firmware_bookworm finished successfully (started at 2023-05-27:09:03:53,
ended at 2023-05-27:09:06:31, took 0h02m38s)
[…]
firmware_sid finished successfully (started at 2023-05-27:09:04:01, ended
at 2023-05-27:09:07:07, took 0h03m06s)

Now, waiting to see if someone would join the testing efforts, I diffed
firmware lists between rc3 and rc4, and spotted those differences:

-./firmware-sof-signed_2.2.4-1_all.deb
-./intel-microcode_3.20230214.1_amd64.deb
-./intel-microcode_3.20230214.1_i386.deb
+./firmware-sof-signed_2.2.5-1_all.deb
+./intel-microcode_3.20230512.1_amd64.deb
+./intel-microcode_3.20230512.1_i386.deb

The intel-microcode bits are OK:

intel-microcode | 3.20230512.1 | testing/non-free-firmware | source,
amd64, i386
intel-microcode | 3.20230512.1 | unstable/non-free-firmware | source,
amd64, i386

The firmware-sof-signed, not so much:

firmware-sof-signed | 2.2.4-1 | testing/non-free-firmware | all
firmware-sof-signed | 2.2.5-1 | unstable/non-free-firmware | all

It's a relatively new upload, and it's of course blocked at the moment:

[2023-05-15] Accepted firmware-sof 2.2.5-1 (all source) into unstable (Mark
Pearson) (signed by: Vincent Bernat)

For the record, those archives end up being published in locations like
the following, and I definitely expected those to match the firmware
packages getting shipped into the images, not be some kind of snapshot of
what's in unstable at the time the release is built!

https://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/firmware/bookworm/bookworm_di_rc3/

We should definitely clarify the situation, and get to the bottom of that
double firmware build.

From the log lines quoted above, if both bookworm and sid builds end up
shipping files in the same destination directory, the last build wins and
overrides the first one entirely?

See also the “rsync noise” that seemed somewhat OK to ignore. Not sure
whether that's directly related though… ISTR it was probably about some
timestamp discrepancy due to the underlying filesystem. For RC 4:

file has vanished:
"/home/debian-cd/publish/.bookworm_di_rc4/firmware/firmware.zip"
rsync: stat
"/dsa/cdimage/.incoming/.bookworm_di_rc4/firmware/.firmware.tar.gz.VQGfUC"
failed: No such file or directory (2)
rsync: rename
"/dsa/cdimage/.incoming/.bookworm_di_rc4/firmware/.firmware.tar.gz.VQGfUC" ->
"firmware.tar.gz": No such file or directory (2)

Thanks for checking on this. In fact, it is closed (so closing with
this mail). The issue was in the debian-cd setup repo, which is Debian
images build-time config and not in the debian-cd package itself.

Debian 12, bookworm, images are missing the contrib section of the repositories
in their entirety. This prevents the use of, for instance, installing ZFS on an
offline computer.

There is quite a lot of useful software in the contrib section and excluding it
from the media sets are a burden, especially for archival purposes of releases.
Using the current mirrors can be fine and all, but eventually 12 won't exist in
the current mirrors anymore, including all the software in contrib.

(Maybe there's an argument that contrib is used for many things that don't
really
belong in it. Hypothetically, it's software that depends on non-free, but in
practice, much of it is completely usable without non-free dependencies.)

That's not exactly a priority use-case, I'll be honest.

However, we used to have contrib included on media sets before
bookworm and it looks like this changed by accident. I've just fixed
config in git now and the next builds will include contrib again.

Yes, this very much looks like /usr-merge breakage and I fully agree
with the pointers you give. Just reading generate_firmware_task, the
contains_firmware sub immediately jumps into my eyes as the grep will
miss moved firmware packages. It should probably become

grep ' \\./\\(usr/\\)\\?lib/firmware/'

(with the double escaping for the target context already applied).

I happen to not know how to test this though. Quite possibly, this is
not the only issue. Are you able to drive this forward from here?

Bug#1059858: debian-cd: Missing firmware packages due to usr-move

2024-01-02 Thread Emanuele Rocca
Package: debian-cd
Version: 3.2.1
Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,

quite a few firmware packages are missing from today's debian-installer
ISOs. Among the missing ones: firmware-atheros, firmware-realtek, and
many others. Some firmware packages such as firmware-ath9k-htc and
firmware-linux-free are instead present.

Packages correctly included in the ISOs ship firmware files under /lib,
while those not included use /usr/lib. For example the following is
included:

 firmware-linux-free: /lib/firmware/av7110/bootcode.bin

While missing packages install firmware files under /usr/lib:

 firmware-atheros: /usr/lib/firmware/wil6210.brd

It seems likely that tools/generate_firmware_task needs to be patched to
take usr-move into account.

Thanks,
  Emanuele

Bug#1057073: debian-cd: adapt script to match the new release-notes situation for trixie

2023-11-29 Thread Holger Wansing
Package: debian-cd
Tags: patch

For trixie we have some changings regarding the release-notes:

They have been migrated from Docbook to reStructedText / Sphinx [1].
During this migration, it has been decided to no longer build separate
versions per architecture, but only one generic variant.

This leads to a changed directory structure on the website for trixie:
While the release-notes had in the past (for example for bookworm):

  /index.de.html
  /index.da.html
[and many more html files for amd64]
 /index.de.html
 /index.da.html
[and many more html files for i386]
  /index.de.html
  /index.da.html
[and many more html files for armel]

... and so on

And for trixie we have now:

  /index.de.html
  /index.da.html
  [and many more html files]

So, the architecture part is skipped from the path.

This requires changes in debian-cd/tools/trixie/installtools.sh, so that
this script can find the release-notes again:

The script uses a r-n tarball, which for bookworm is under
https://www.debian.org/releases/bookworm/release-notes-amd64.tar.gz
https://www.debian.org/releases/bookworm/release-notes-i386.tar.gz
https://www.debian.org/releases/bookworm/release-notes-armel.tar.gz
... and so on.

For trixie, the tarball is under
https://www.debian.org/releases/trixie/release-notes.tar.gz

BTW:
AFAICS the release-notes are not integrated in the installation images
currently, but we should keep the script working nevertheless.

I have attached a patch with the required changings.
This is however untested, since I'm unable to use debian-cd due to the
lack of a local mirror. So, could someone do a test build, to check the
script works again?

Regards
Holger

Bug#1053934: www.debian.org: mirror submission form does not allow submitting or updating debian-cd mirrors

2023-10-14 Thread Jing Luo
Package: www.debian.org
Severity: important
X-Debbugs-Cc: debian-cd@lists.debian.org, mirr...@debian.org

The current debian-cd mirroring instruction page [1] says:

> You can register your mirror either by filling out _the mirror submission
> form_ (note that the CDImage-* fields are the important ones), [...]

However, it looks like the submission form [2] has been updated recently,
the HTTP path is "hard coded" to `/debian`. There is no `CDImage-*` fields
either. It is not possible to use this web form to submit/update a debian-cd
mirror.

Either the instruction page needs to be updated with the latest procedure to
submit a debian-cd mirror, or the form needs to be changed to allow
debian-cd (or perhaps even debian-ports and debian-archive) mirror submission
or update.

Hi,

installing Debian 13 testing using today's image [1] always fails at the
boot loader installation stage with the error "Failed to mount
/target/proc". After this message is shown, GRUB is left uninstalled and
it is not possible the boot the system.

Running `mount` in a shell shows that /target/proc is already mounted.

This error occurs regardless of the installation method (tested with
graphical, tui, expert install).

New mirror in Japan for debian-cd

2023-08-27 Thread JING LUO
Hi all,

To support free software, I've set up a mirror for debian-cd using the
provided script.
No daily/weekly builds.

Name: repo.jing.rocks
Admin: Jing Luo or
Geolocation: Tokyo, Japan
Bandwidth: 10Gbit/s
IPv6: yes
URL:
http://repo.jing.rocks/debian-cd/
https://repo.jing.rocks/debian-cd/
rsync://repo.jing.rocks/debian-cd/

I've configured jigdo-mirror to run every day.
This mirror is hosted in a homelab with a residential internet
connection, so the traffic is not metered and doesn't cost money. I
don't throttle any connections either. The server parts are mostly
second-hand.

Thank you for your trust and support.

Bug#1038440: debian-cd: debian-12.0.0-amd64-netinst.iso is too big for a CD

2023-06-18 Thread Thomas Schmitt
Hi,

when comparing 12.0.0 with 11.5.0 i see three file trees which have grown
substantially:

du of mounted debian-11.5.0-amd64-netinst.iso :
  5 /firmware
  126611 /install.amd
  308479 /pool

du of mounted debian-12.0.0-amd64-netinst.iso :
  221108 /firmware
  156509 /install.amd
  589416 /pool

In pool of 12.0.0 i see another firmware tree
  220570 /pool/non-free-firmware
but this does not cost much media capacity, because the file content is
shared with the files in the /firmware tree:

  $ xorriso -indev debian-12.0.0-amd64-netinst.iso \
-find / -sort_lba -exec report_lba --
  ...
Report layout: xt , Startlba , Blocks , Filesize , ISO image path
  ...
  File data lba: 0 ,18420 , 8217 , 16827872 ,
'/firmware/firmware-atheros_20230210-5_all.deb'
  File data lba: 0 ,18420 , 8217 , 16827872 ,
'/pool/non-free-firmware/f/firmware-nonfree/firmware-atheros_20230210-5_all.deb'
  ...

Such deduplication of hard links also happens with initrd.gz and vmlinuz
files in /install.amd. The real storage sizes as measured in above -find
output are:
   11.5.0 12.0.0 Growth
  /firmware 0 MiB 216 MiB 216 MiB
  /install.amd 67 MiB 138 MiB 71 MiB
  /pool 301 MiB 360 MiB 59 MiB

To fit on a regular "700 MB" (~ 702 MiB) CD-R/CD-RW these would have to
shrink by at least 36 MiB.

Have a nice day :)

Thomas

Dear Maintainer,

   * What led up to the situation?

I downloaded the "small" debian-12.0.0-amd64-netinst.iso (738 MiB)

   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
 ineffective)?

I tried to burn it to a CD-RW disc:

sudo wodim blank=all
sudo wodim -dao debian-12.0.0-amd64-netinst.iso

   * What was the outcome of this action?

wodim: WARNING: Data may not fit on current disk.
wodim: Notice: Use -overburn option to write more than the official disk
capacity.
wodim: Notice: Most CD-writers do overburning only on SAO or RAW mode.

   * What outcome did you expect instead?

The ISO to be small enough to fit on an 80-minute CD (703 MiB).

I'm not sure if I will actually need a CD,
(refurbishing someone's old laptop,
I don't know yet if it will boot from USB stick or not),
but if it can only boot from CD I will have to
install Bullseye (whose netinst does fit on a CD)
and then upgrade, which is not ideal.

Thanks,

Claude

I'm considering the following change for the upcoming (pseudo) RC 5 release:
  https://salsa.debian.org/images-team/setup/-/commit/9a77631

This means nothing changes for weekly builds, which are detected as being
built with DEBVERSION set to “testing” (please note that I didn't
investigate what happens to firmware directories in this case).

Meanwhile, actual releases get that sid job skipped (since the release
specific config file, e.g. CONF.sh.bookworm_di_rc4, sets DEBVERSION to
“bookworm-DI-rc4” instead of sticking to the default “testing” value).

Bug#1036828: debian-cd: wrong firmware archives built and published for D-I releases?

2023-05-27 Thread Cyril Brulebois
Package: debian-cd
Severity: serious

Hi,

During a previous release, I spotted we had two firmware builds, but let
the topic go once I was reassured that was to be expected. For RC 4:

1/43: Starting firmware_bookworm build at 2023-05-27:09:03:53
[…]
9/43: Starting firmware_sid build at 2023-05-27:09:04:01
[…]
firmware_bookworm finished successfully (started at 2023-05-27:09:03:53,
ended at 2023-05-27:09:06:31, took 0h02m38s)
[…]
firmware_sid finished successfully (started at 2023-05-27:09:04:01, ended
at 2023-05-27:09:07:07, took 0h03m06s)

Now, waiting to see if someone would join the testing efforts, I diffed
firmware lists between rc3 and rc4, and spotted those differences:

-./firmware-sof-signed_2.2.4-1_all.deb
-./intel-microcode_3.20230214.1_amd64.deb
-./intel-microcode_3.20230214.1_i386.deb
+./firmware-sof-signed_2.2.5-1_all.deb
+./intel-microcode_3.20230512.1_amd64.deb
+./intel-microcode_3.20230512.1_i386.deb

The intel-microcode bits are OK:

intel-microcode | 3.20230512.1 | testing/non-free-firmware | source,
amd64, i386
intel-microcode | 3.20230512.1 | unstable/non-free-firmware | source,
amd64, i386

The firmware-sof-signed, not so much:

firmware-sof-signed | 2.2.4-1 | testing/non-free-firmware | all
firmware-sof-signed | 2.2.5-1 | unstable/non-free-firmware | all

It's a relatively new upload, and it's of course blocked at the moment:

[2023-05-15] Accepted firmware-sof 2.2.5-1 (all source) into unstable (Mark
Pearson) (signed by: Vincent Bernat)

For the record, those archives end up being published in locations like
the following, and I definitely expected those to match the firmware
packages getting shipped into the images, not be some kind of snapshot of
what's in unstable at the time the release is built!

https://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/firmware/bookworm/bookworm_di_rc3/

We should definitely clarify the situation, and get to the bottom of that
double firmware build.

From the log lines quoted above, if both bookworm and sid builds end up
shipping files in the same destination directory, the last build wins and
overrides the first one entirely?

See also the “rsync noise” that seemed somewhat OK to ignore. Not sure
whether that's directly related though… ISTR it was probably about some
timestamp discrepancy due to the underlying filesystem. For RC 4:

file has vanished:
"/home/debian-cd/publish/.bookworm_di_rc4/firmware/firmware.zip"
rsync: stat
"/dsa/cdimage/.incoming/.bookworm_di_rc4/firmware/.firmware.tar.gz.VQGfUC"
failed: No such file or directory (2)
rsync: rename
"/dsa/cdimage/.incoming/.bookworm_di_rc4/firmware/.firmware.tar.gz.VQGfUC" ->
"firmware.tar.gz": No such file or directory (2)

Bug#1035309: unblock: debian-cd/3.2.1

Package: release.debian.org
Severity: normal
User: release.debian@packages.debian.org

Hi,

[ Reason ]
[ Impact ]
While not absolutely needed to have in bookworm, it looks like a good
idea to ship the tooling that's making the release possible.

[ Tests ]
We appear to have built D-I Bookworm RC 1 with the proposed changes
minus the last one (zstd), and D-I Bookworm RC 2 with the proposed
changes, and I think it worked OK! :)

[ Risks ]
We're mostly removing references to old tools, and pulling an extra
package on installation images (that was being pulled later on during
the installation process so that's not a huge change anyway).

The remaining one (symlinks vs. hardlinks) could have been worrying. The
aim is to support people doing weird things with the images we produce,
and it could possibly regress for people who don't. Needless to say,
firmware support is getting extensively tested with various machines,
including laptops pulling up to 5 firmware packages, and there were no
regressions spotted there.

[ Checklist ]
[x] all changes are documented in the d/changelog
[x] I reviewed all changes and I approve them
[x] attach debdiff against the package in testing

[ Other info ]
Thanks for all your hard work.

Heads-up: debian-cd changes

2023-02-07 Thread Cyril Brulebois
Hi,

I'm contacting you a little in advance of an upcoming debian-cd upload,
as the only debian-cd rev-dep. There were many changes lately, to add
non-free-firmware support, which might have side-effects. I haven't
documented them yet (debian/changelog), and we haven't performed a real
review of those changes, or full image builds, but that's coming up soon
for the upcoming d-i release.

One big change is a heavy reorganization regarding LOCAL/LOCALDEBS
support, clarifying the expected layout, etc. I think this might break
some existing setups, but it should be much clearer, apt should be
happier, etc. It's very likely to have been broken for a while (apt
becoming stricter over time), but maybe some old setups were still
working by accident…

Anyway, it seems like simple-cdd started using that feature back in 2005
(the only match is a debian/changelog entry from that time), but that
was dropped in 2015, via:

https://salsa.debian.org/debian/simple-cdd/-/commit/b9b48e2c437bbdac3990be1a4a8ebde4b0189f35

I thought I'd drop you a note anyway.

Another change that might have side effects is making sure dep11
metadata files are present, so that we can generate metadata for
hw-detect to use, helping it detect which firmware packages are needed.
Without this change, we might have missed that some metadata was lacking
in the archive… but maybe this is going to make simple-cdd users' life
harder… That being said, this should happen when FORCE_FIRMWARE is set,
so…

Finally, the big one: we have NONFREE and NONFREE_COMPONENTS now, with
NONFREE_COMPONENTS initially set to "non-free non-free-firmware", and
with firmware packages moving to n-f-f, it only lists the latter now.

Until a proper debian/changelog for debian-cd is written, I hope both
README and comments in CONF.sh are sufficient.

Sorry I didn't think of simple-cdd sooner. Lots of moving pieces…

Cheers,

In Debian Edu, I have discovered that the set of packages installed
when we install using our DVD is not the same set of packages
installed when installing using the netinst CD.

I've tracked down the cause, and it is the fact that the packages we
want on the DVD do not get all their recommended packages added to the
DVD, making apt fail to find all the packages it find when using the
netinst CD. The NORECOMMENDS=0 setting in debian-cd only take effect
for the packages directly listed in the task lists. Their recommended
packages do not get their recommended packages included on the DVD.

I have written this (untested) patch to try to get debian-cd to behave
more like apt, and include recommended packages recursively when the
NORECOMMENDS=0 flag is set.

Including it here for feedback and comments. I'll test the patch and
see how it affect the Debian Edu DVD build. :)

Package: debian-cd

Severity: normal

Hello,

since grub version 2.06-3 entered sid, the UEFI menu of the daily netinst image
shows a black text on the dark blue background for the selected boot item.

https://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/daily-builds/sid_d-i/arch-latest/amd64/iso-
cd/
debian-testing-amd64-netinst.iso

This can be seen e.g. at
https://openqa.debian.net/tests/61507#step/bootwalk_0/2

It appears that the grub theme is active now (which was not the case for e.g.
the netinst-11 images).

As a local hack, I've replaced:
selected_item_color = "black"
with
selected_item_color = "white"

in boot/grub/theme/1 inside my netinst image.

The original file that is used is:
https://sources.debian.org/src/debian-cd/3.1.35/data/bullseye/grub-
theme.in/?hl=58#L58

With kind regards,
Roland Clobus

Bug#1024397: debian-cd: Please remove references to transitional packages in tasks

2022-11-18 Thread Simon McVittie
Package: debian-cd
Severity: normal

libgdk-pixbuf2.0-0-udeb (historical package name) has been superseded by
libgdk-pixbuf-2.0-0-udeb (Policy-compliant name + "-udeb") since bullseye
and I'd like to remove the old name, but according to codesearch,
tasks/*/Debian-edu-full in debian-cd seems to still have references to it.
Is it safe to remove the transitional udeb anyway?

I also notice that libgdk-pixbuf2.0-0, another transitional package, is
also listed in that file. Does that inclusion block removal of
the transitional libgdk-pixbuf2.0-0?

It would probably be good to replace transitional packages in the various
package lists with their dependencies at some point.

If you check in sort_deps.$ARCH.log, that'll tell you what dependency
resolution happened.

Bug#1021702: debian-cd: Take constraints into account while building the cd packages pool

2022-10-13 Thread Arnaud Rebillout
Package: debian-cd
Version: debian-cd: Please take constraints into account while building the cd
packages pool
Severity: normal
User: de...@kali.org
Usertags: origin-kali

Dear Maintainer,

I'm documenting here something that we've hit in Kali lately. The
installer didn't include a package that was depended upon, and
therefore the installation failed.

The offending package was king-phisher (only in Kali). Syslog said:

in-target: The following packages have unmet dependencies:
  in-target:  king-phisher : Depends: python3-matplotlib (>= 1.4.3) but it is
not installable
  in-target: Recommends: python3-mpltoolkits.basemap (>= 1.0.7)
but it is not installable

By entering a chroot, and trying to install the king-phisher package,
using the pool of packages provided in the Kali installer, I get:

  # apt install king-phisher
  [...]
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
   python3-fonttools : Depends: python3-unicodedata2 (>= 14.0.0) but it is not
installable or
python3-all (>= 3.11.0) but 3.10.6-1 is to be
installed
E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.

Looking at the dependency tree now:

  king-phisher
  +-- python3-matplotlib
+-- python3-fonttools
  +-- python3-unicodedata2 (>= 14.0.0) | python3-all (>= 3.11.0)

In the pool of packages that are available in the Kali iso, we don't
have python3-unicodedata2 , however we have python3-all , BUT it's at
version 3.10.6-1 ... So nothing can satisfy the dependency.

So it looks to me that it's a bug in debian-cd. I guess that the
resolver that decides which packages are included in the pool didn't
include python3-unicodedata2 because there was python3-all already, but
it didn't take into account the constraints >= 3.11.0.

As a sidenote, it looks like the maintainer of python3-fonttools is a
bit ahead of time, his package depends on python3-unicodedata2 (>=
14.0.0) | python3-all (>= 3.11.0) but 3.11 is not yet released, it's
planned for end of October.

Note that this is an issue only for installers that don't have access to
the network. If network is available, I guess that python3-unicodedata2
will be fetched from a remote package repository, so no problem for most
users.

Thanks,

Arnaud

Getting a SCSI chain working is perfectly simple if you remember that there

Bug#1013432: debian-cd: UEFI boot uses black text on dark blue background

2022-06-23 Thread Roland Clobus
Package: debian-cd
Version: 3.1.35
Severity: normal

Hello,

since grub version 2.06-3 entered sid, the UEFI menu of the daily netinst image
shows a black text on the dark blue background for the selected boot item.

https://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/daily-builds/sid_d-i/arch-latest/amd64/iso-
cd/
debian-testing-amd64-netinst.iso

This can be seen e.g. at
https://openqa.debian.net/tests/61507#step/bootwalk_0/2

It appears that the grub theme is active now (which was not the case for e.g.
the netinst-11 images).

As a local hack, I've replaced:
selected_item_color = "black"
with
selected_item_color = "white"

in boot/grub/theme/1 inside my netinst image.

The original file that is used is:
https://sources.debian.org/src/debian-cd/3.1.35/data/bullseye/grub-
theme.in/?hl=58#L58

With kind regards,
Roland Clobus

Bug#1003927: debian-cd: Move grub-theme for UEFI boot from debian-cd to debian-installer?

2022-01-18 Thread Raphaël Hertzog
Package: debian-cd,debian-installer
Severity: wishlist
User: de...@kali.org
Usertags: origin-kali
X-Debbugs-Cc: raph...@offensive-security.com

Hello,

we were trying to harmonize our grub theme across all of Kali and we
(re-)discovered that for installer images, the grub theme is actually
handled at the debian-cd level (./data/$RELEASE/grub-theme.in used by
tools/boot/$RELEASE/boot-x86).

I believe that a derivative distribution should not have to fork debian-cd
to be able to customize the grub theme. It would be much more logical if
debian-cd reused files from debian-installer also for all its handling of
grub for UEFI boot. That's why this bug is filed against both packages
together, we really need some coordination here.

Note that this move would also help to fix #982496 where we ask arm64 boot
to make use of the grub theme.

I don't have any concrete proposal or patch but I wanted to have this
properly recorded. For now in Kali we have worked around this limitation
in our build scripts to not have to fork debian-cd and still ship our
own theme:
https://gitlab.com/kalilinux/build-scripts/live-build-config/-/commit/bb399b8bf63635f53d2ab546f41d1924a5c84467

Given that d-i already provides syslinux configuration files, couldn't it
also provide grub configuration files instead of letting debian-cd do its
own grub port of those files?

Cheers,
  Raphaël.

Bug#993117: debian-cd: F2FS support

Hello,
Please add the option to select the F2FS file system in the disk partitioning
menu. This filesystem seems to me to be reliable enough, not less than the much
slower Btrfs. Besides, it is optimized for use on modern solid-state drives.

Bug#991141: debian-cd: arm64 device trees not included in ESP

2021-07-15 Thread Michael Walle
Package: debian-cd
Severity: normal

It is useful to have the device trees available on the ESP. If we have these,
(vanilla) u-boot should be able to boot any board which has a dtb in the kernel
out-of-the box using EFI.

The (arm64) mini.iso already includes the DTBs in /dtb (which is the path
u-boot searches for).

Unfortunatly, these files are missing from ESP in the debian netinst.iso.
Please include them there, too.

Hello,

Currently, the netinst images do not contain brltty and espeakup. This
means that blind users who install Debian without a network mirror end
up with an unusable installed system, lacking brltty and espeakup to
show braille or talk to them. brltty was explicitly removed in version
3.1.0 because it pulls libicu, resulting to 5MiB increase. The rationale
was that it was not deemed the size for the little userbase. Some blind
users have complained about espeakup, which is about the same story
(pulling espeak etc.), so I'm recording the request here, in case that
could be reconsidered.

Samuel

This morning's bullseye build for amd64:

-rw-r--r-- 1 debian-cd debian-cd 377487360 May 16 08:56
debian-testing-amd64-netinst.iso

and the build I've just triggered by hand:

-rw-r--r-- 1 debian-cd debian-cd 395313152 May 16 14:45
debian-testing-amd64-netinst.iso

the difference is just under 18MB for the netinst, I think that's
OK. All the other larger images won't see any change here.

Marking this bug as closed now, as the change is in git and we're
using it for builds now.

I've just moved espeakup, brltty and alsa-utils from the "forcd1" config
into tools/generate_di+k_list so they'll get pulled in for every build
including the netinst. Let's see how much of a size difference that makes.

Bug#988192: unblock: debian-cd/3.1.34

2021-05-07 Thread Holger Levsen
Package: release.debian.org
Severity: normal
User: release.debian@packages.debian.org
Usertags: unblock

Please unblock package debian-cd 3.1.34 as that's the version currently in use
on cdimage.debian.org to build bullseye images. The changes are straightforward,
trivial, tested and been in unstable since April 20th 2021:

 debian-cd (3.1.34) unstable; urgency=medium
 .
   [ Wolfgang Schweer ]
   * data/bullseye: Update Debian Edu installer logo and syslinux splash image
 from src:debian-edu-artwork 2.11.5-1.
   * tools/boot/*/boot-x86: Prevent custom splash images from being modified.
The related code seems to have been useful a long time ago (the need to use
an RLE file and to reduce the number of colours to 16 has been dropped as
of
syslinux version 3.62). So replace obsolete code with a simple cp command.
   * debian/control: Drop Recommends: on netpbm and syslinux-utils. These are no
longer needed now that custom splash images are used unmodified.
 .
   [ Petter Reinholdtse ]
   * Include eatmydata deb for d-i to use offline. Closes: #986772
 .
   [ Steve McIntyre ]
   * Shorten "ppc64el" to "p64el" in the volume ID. The bullseye d-i
RC1 build failed as the volume ID was too long.

A proposal is floating on debian-boot@ to speed up the installation
significatly using the eatmydata-udeb. This only work with network
installations, but it would be great if it worked with offline
installations too.

See thread starting on

the history so far.

The eatmydatat udeb has been in included on the Debian Edu images for a
while now, the deb is small, and is not activated by default with this
change, so the impact for the default installation is very small.

2021-03-31 Thread bauen1
Package: debian-cd
Version: 3.1.33
Severity: wishlist

Dear Maintainer,

While building my own CDs I've discovered that while most tools, e.g.
debootstrap, allow using `unstable` / `sid` with the same results, debian-cd
does not.
This could be handled by adding symlinks, like for sid, to data, tasks,
tools/boot , thus allowing the user to specify CODENAME=unstable to build a sid
installer cd.

Bug#986178: debian-cd: Pass DEBOOTSTRAP_OPTS to all debootstrap calls

2021-03-30 Thread bauen1
Package: debian-cd

Dear Maintainer,

Building my own customised installers has lead me to discover that
DEBOOTSTRAP_OPTS isn't passed to debootstrap in tools/make_disc_trees.pl , this
breaks some more exotic use cases where passing options to DEBOOTSTRAP is
required / wanted.

Bug#678065: debian-cd: Include brltty and espeakup in netinst

Sorry to chime in here, but do any of The CDs use BRLTTY 6.3.
Also another thing which has been on my mind, why can't orca be integrated
into the debian installer (obviously not for the netinst ISOs)

Can we reconsider this for bullseye? Nowadays the netinst image already
includes libicu, so adding brltty and espeakup won't add much to the
image size. We have had at least one user who was really surprised
that he didn't get braille working in the installed system only
because he didn't have Internet available because of missing firmware.
Telling people to download the DVD-1 image for that case is not going to
fly :)

Bug#982496: debian-cd: Support grub theme on arm64

2021-02-10 Thread Raphaël Hertzog
Package: debian-cd
Version: 3.1.33
Severity: wishlist
User: de...@kali.org
Usertags: origin-kali
X-Debbugs-Cc: raph...@offensive-security.com

We're working on getting Kali to work as a VM on the Apple M1 and so we
are trying to build arm64 installer images with simple-cdd (and thus
debina-cd). In this process, Steev Klimaszewski
discovered that the grub configuration used for the EFI boot on arm64 does
not take advantage of any theming, contrary to amd64/i386.

It would be nice if we could fix this by enabling the grub theme
everywhere. However this doesn't look entirely trivial as the theming
is handled through a mixture of code in tools/boot/bullseye/boot-x86
and tools/boot/bullseye/parse_isolinux, and arm64 is not relying on
isolinux at all.

Steve, your input is thus most welcome.

Reassigning to debian-cd, as simple-cdd is just calling debian-cd's
"make image-tree".

It might be possible for simple-cdd to workaround this or provide hooks
to workaround it, but seems better to have debian-cd not depend on local
apt configuration...

It might be a better choice in the long term to write kernel (KMS)
drivers for these instead. Those would then be usable by both X and
Wayland servers and should be able to handle suspend and resume
gracefully.

I have to admit I'm starting to become a bit to wonder why you are trying to
push the use of the "unreleased" distribution.

It's by far not a pressing problem since it affects only a tiny fraction of
packages and those are only cases of workarounds anyway. "unreleased" is
a hack and porters should try to avoid it and get their fixes upstreamed.
I don't think we should further encourage the use of workarounds.

A much more pressing problem is getting support for "contrib" and "non-free"
in Debian Ports so that users have access to firmware during installation.

Furthermore, we really need to switch Debian Ports from Mini-DAK to a proper
DAK instance so that don't run into problems with the lack of cruft in
Debian Ports anymore [1].

Furthermore pressing tasks are:

- update the hfsprogs package and create a udeb for d-i
- update grub-installer and partman-auto to use the hfsprogs udeb on PowerMacs
- create a udeb of the libunwind package required for ia64
- re-introduce old xorg drivers needed for PowerMacs (mach64, r128 etc)
- finish the OpenJDK Zero port to hppa (we are still missing Java on hppa)
- fix GHC on sh4
- add support for HFS (not HFS+) to libburnia so we can get rid of cdrkit
- ...

Bug#968803: debian-cd : please include base packages from 'unreleased' on debian-ports architectures

Dear maintainer,

It seems that debian-cd doesn't consider packages from the 'unreleased'
distribution (on debian-ports architectures) when running debootstrap.
As a result, packages of priority 'required' or 'important' may be
forgotten in the list of the base packages needed by debootstrap.

The patch below runs debootstrap with option '--extra-suite=unreleased'.

As advised in [1], it is made optional with a new environment variable
'DEBOOTSTRAP_USES_UNRELEASED'.

Regards,
JH Chatenet

ACK, thanks for reporting. It *is* a false positive - we are happy
that we do not have a problem with malware.

We've had a slew of similar complaints this week, all apparently
triggered by Google's "safe browsing" service. We're trying to get it
fixed at their end.

Bug#960507: debian-cd: undefined $size_check causes 'make image-trees' to fail

2020-05-13 Thread Steve Bolan
Package: debian-cd
Version: 3.1.25
Severity: normal
Tags: d-i newcomer patch

Dear Maintainer,

* What led up to the situation?

Making a custom sized iso for writing to an extra large BluRay disk (up
to 100gb)

* What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or ineffective)?

I set the following properties in CONF.sh

export NONFREE=1
export FORCE_FIRMWARE=1
export DISKTYPE=CUSTOM
export CUSTOMSIZE=47304704

CONF.sh
make distclean
make status
make packagelists TASK=Debian-generic COMPLETE=1
make image-trees

* What was the outcome of this action?

This failed with:

Done: read 647 entries for 1 languages
Starting to lay out packages into images:
Can't exec "/home/steve/debian-cd/tmp/buster/CD1": Permission denied at
/home/steve/debian-cd/tools/make_disc_trees.pl line 284, line 75939.
Use of uninitialized value $size in scalar chomp at

Use of uninitialized value $size in concatenation (.) or string at
/home/steve/debian-cd/tools/make_disc_trees.pl line 286, line 75939.

This error is because $size_check` is an empty string, as definied on line 1485
in make_disc_trees.pl:
my $size_check = "";

When like 916 is executed it tries to execute the contents of $cddir which is a
directory:
$size = `$size_check $cddir`;

To fix this a copied the definition of $size_check from line 1485:
$size_check = "$mkisofs_check $mkisofs_opts $mkisofs_dirs";

to before line 916. Re-running these commands now works as expected:

make distclean
make status
make packagelists TASK=Debian-generic COMPLETE=1
make image-trees

I don't pretend to understand the code, but the same problem might exist
elsewhere, e.g. line 284.

I created a diff like this:
$ diff -u make_disc_trees.pl.orig make_disc_trees.pl
--- make_disc_trees.pl.orig 2020-05-12 18:44:16.036773037 +0200

}

+$size_check = "$mkisofs_check $mkisofs_opts $mkisofs_dirs";
$size = `$size_check $cddir`;
chomp $size;
$bytes = $size * $blocksize;

I hope this is of some use and apologise if I've omitted useful information or
it's user error.

Cheers,
Steve

How exactly are you running things then? build.sh is my normal
interface, and that should be sourcing CONF.sh.
