Re: Status of the belocs-locales-{bin,data} packages
(keeping belocs-locales-* packages) Does anybody want to maintain these packages? Are there some languages which really need them? Not in D-I supported packages. I think that your question should include the glibc maintainers, however I share your feelings. There is no point in maintaining belocs-* packages nowunless it again becomes difficult to include new locales in glibc. An argument to keep belocs was that glibc is usually frozen very early and it then becomes hard to add new locales. If belocs is abandoned, we should maybe ask for freeze exceptions to add new locales in glibc for the lenny freeze stage. signature.asc Description: Digital signature

tag 119974 + pending thanks I checked in the POSIX doc, FWIW here is what I found: fsync was first introduced it seems as an XOPEN extension. Hence the __USE_XOPEN guard, and defining _XOPEN_SOURCE indeed works. Else, wrt POSIX, fsync last updates are in posix 1003.1-2001. Just saying POSIX does not tell you if its POSIX.1 or POSIX.1b. Given the current messy use of test macros, it would be natural to think POSIX refers to whatever _POSIX_SOURCE buys you by default (POSIX.1); otherwise the manual page would state clearly the standard revision so you could define the test macro to the appropiate number. On the other hand, the fsync(2) manual page (which I had read) clearly labels fsync() as POSIX.1b, so I was a bit confused for the precise revision, but it is clearly a POSIX function. Current man page advertise it as POSIX 1003.1-2001 which is correct. So FWIW compiling with: gcc -ansi -Wall -D_POSIX_SOURCE=1 -D_POSIX_C_SOURCE=200112 a.c should work. The correct fix is to add an || defined(__USE_POSIX2K) in the guard. -- ·O· Pierre Habouzit ··O[EMAIL PROTECTED] OOOhttp://www.madism.org pgpiBKtpULC8O.pgp Description: PGP signature

Bug#325600: New patch idea
Hallo Tom, As *reverting* Aurelien's patch does not change anything, I looked into some source codes around sys_wait4 and osf_wait4 (in glibc and kernel). The interesting thing is: Linuxthreads uses osf_wait4 only on alpha, the other architectures uses the sys_wait4 syscall. As linuxthreads is for linux only and there is no need for it if you build glibc on an Digital Unix (OSF) alpha system, it is not needed to call the compatibility syscalls of the kernel that emulate OSF behaviour. Looking into the kernel source, osf_wait4 was changed in 2.6.11 or so. In your original patch you used the standard glibc function wait4 (which uses the syscall sys_wait4). As the last parameter of the used wait4 is always NULL, you do not need the compatibility function of OSF (and it is an overhead in the kernel!). So you could change the INLINE_SYSCALL from osf_wait4 to sys_wait4 and try again (I have no time to do this). If this was the problem, we have a good patch. By the way, the waitpid_no_cancel code change only affects linux on alpha (as other systems does not know osf_wait4). And on Digital Unix itself there is no need for linuxthreads at all, so it will not break glibc build on Digital Unix. - Uwe Schindler H.-H.-Meier-Allee 63, D-28213 Bremen http://www.thetaphi.de eMail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] -Original Message- From: Tom Evans [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Sunday, April 15, 2007 6:28 AM To: Uwe Schindler Subject: Re: Bug#325600: closed by Aurelien Jarno (Closing bugs fixed in unreleased version 2.4-1 of the glibc) Reverting that patch had no effect on zombies (at least for me) - back to investigating ... :) -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. You may want to read the rationale in http://sourceware.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=4366 but indeed, fsync is only defined in POSIX Realtime extensions or XSI, hence you'll need some kind of _XOPEN_SOURCE define to enable fsync, and that's correct behaviour. Closing the bug. -- ·O· Pierre Habouzit ··O[EMAIL PROTECTED] OOOhttp://www.madism.org pgpc69dd2uxGE.pgp Description: PGP signature ---End Message---

Bug#419189: Error on installing libc6 2.5-1 - breaks system
The point is that your system has very akward things, as what lies in your /lib/tls: * _seems_ to come from a libc 2.3.2; * still has a libc-2.3.6.so too that has not the correct permissions _BUT_ the same size and date as the libc-2.3.2.so (which is completely absurd). * sizes that are unrecorded in known debian packages. So we're really wondering what has been happening on that system. Did you installed ubuntu packages at some point ? did you do anything peculiar to your system ? do you use prelink ? well, any kind of additionnal informations would be really apprecited. Oh and which kernel did you had _before_ the glibc2.5 upgrade ? a 2.6 ? or still a 2.4 ? The strange files come from knoppix 5.2. I have forgotten to tell you about a stupid try to repair the system. I'm really sorry. I used ever a 2.6 kernel. -- Feel free - 10 GB Mailbox, 100 FreeSMS/Monat ... Please consider interacting with translators when introducing/modifying new debconf templates
(/me grins at glibc maintainers..:-)) Hello, I just noticed new or modified debconf templates appearing for this package. I would like to suggest you to consider calling for debconf templates review AND translation updates when you introduce new debconf templates or modify the existing templates in a package or, if you prefer, to send a call for translations after uploading the first version that introduces new templates or templates changes. This will be picked up by the debian-i18n contributors for your package *this time*, but please read the following for future reference. 1) Get your debconf templates reviewed -- The Debian i18n contributors have developed a set of suggestions for the writing style of debconf templates, to give them an overall consistency all around Debian. These writing style suggestions are explained in the Developers Reference. Lintian also warns about common writing style concerns. You should anyway consider asking in [EMAIL PROTECTED] for a review of your debconf templates. This should be done by sending the original templates file(s), which are generally named debian/*templates to [EMAIL PROTECTED] It is suggested that you use a Subject field that the debian-l10n-english participants have normalized, namely: Subject: [TAF] templates://package/templates file(s) name(s) Replace package by you package name and templates file(s) name(s) by the name of your templates file. Someone will pick up the review to do, handle it, and finally send you a bug report with the suggested templates. If you want, you can ask for being CC'ed to the various discussions when the templates are reviewed. 2) Install po-debconf - If you test-build your package on your system, you shoud already have it. Otherwise, consider apt-get installing it. it will bring the needed utility. 3) Call for new translations As soon as the templates have been reviewed, you can ask Debian translators for new translations: Just go to your package's build tree and use: $ podebconf-report-po --call This will propose you a generic mail which is to be sent to [EMAIL PROTECTED] and call for new translations. This utility will mention existing translations to avoid duplicate work. It will also attach the needed material to this mail. Please also think about giving a deadline to translators. We like deadlines..:-) 4) Always call for translation updates before uploading --- (of course only when you change the debconf templates!) If your package already includes debconf translations (ie *.po files in debian/po), please consider calling for translation updates if you happen to change something in the templates...or just in case when you release a new version. This is done with the following command: $ podebconf-report-po This will build private mails to translators (ie people listed in Last-Translator in the PO files) for translations that are incomplete. These mails will included the needed PO file for each translator. -- -- signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Re: Status of the belocs-locales-{bin,data} packages
Christian Perrier a écrit : (keeping belocs-locales-* packages) Does anybody want to maintain these packages? Are there some languages which really need them? Not in D-I supported packages. I think that your question should include the glibc maintainers, however I share your feelings. There is no point in maintaining belocs-* packages nowunless it again becomes difficult to include new locales in glibc. We basically agree to include locales fixes in the glibc if corresponding native speakers agree with the changes, or in other words in case of doubts we will ask on the l10n/i18n lists. The main problem we face is that, as far as I know, since Denis left Debian, nobody has really the knowledge to do maintain the locales part of the glibc. Somebody with such knowledge will be really welcome in the team. An argument to keep belocs was that glibc is usually frozen very early and it then becomes hard to add new locales. If belocs is abandoned, we should maybe ask for freeze exceptions to add new locales in glibc for the lenny freeze stage. That would be a good idea. Anyway we already asked the release team to reconsider the way the glibc is frozen for lenny. -- .''`. Hi, I am 100% sure that my colleague found fundamentals of this bug. On SPARC linux is used thread safe version of gethostbyname genthostbyname_r. This function have third argument char buffer. But if this buffer is not correctly aligned (on SPARC / 4 ) program crashed with BUSS ERROR. I attach demonstrate program to test this issue. If you change size of buffer from 1002 to 1000 program start working. I mean that simple workaround on SPARC is not use gethostbyname_r. Bug#419467: New version uninstallable on kernel 2.4 systems because NPTL
The new libc6 is uninstallable on systems with kernel 2.4. As there is still many systems which are only efficient with kernle 2.4 this is a very big problem. You may find it more productive to backport the necessary kernel code from 2.6 to 2.4. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Bug#419189: i'd suggest a check
it seems like it would be a good idea to check for non dpkg owned versions of problem libraries sitting in that directory in the preinst and either aborting the upgrade before the system is left in a badly broken state or moving the files out of the way. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Tested it with 2.5-1, works fine now. Bug#418813: locales still won't install. Dependency problem on i386
The last message I saw on the bug page mentioned that the glibc-2.5-1 virtual package is provided by libc6 2.5-2. But I've just done a system update (on unstable) and the available version of libc6 is 2.5-1. Furthermore, according to http://packages.debian.org/unstable/libs/libc6, 2.5-2 is the version on amd64 -- for i386, the version is 2.5-1. For this latter version the control info has Provides: glibc-2.5.0-0exp1, glibc-2.5.0-0exp2 Could it be that the glibc-2.5-1 virtual package is only provided by the version of libc6 for amd64, but not by i386?
