An obvious temporary workaround is __not__ using an __8-bit__ locale...
This is a quite serious typo that inverts the sense of the sentence...
By the way, I don't agree that this is a good workaround, as it leads to

I've just uploaded to unstable a new version of sane-backends which
includes a workaround for CONFIG_USB_SUSPEND. This workaround only
works with Linux 2.6.22 up, though.
