Package: xserver-xorg
Version: 1:7.0.22
Severity: important

I did a test install of Debian/etch/amd64 ; I have a Radeon card, with two
heads (one digital , one analog ) , and two CRT monitors connected to it
(using good-old analog cables , and one digital-analog adapter )

lspci reports:

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV280 [Radeon 9200]
(rev 01)
01:00.1 Display controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV280 [Radeon 9200]
(Secondary) (rev 01)

After the install, when I reboot, the reboot would hang when GDM tried to start
X ,
(nothing shown on the two monitors, kbd unresponsive ),
and I had to hit reset .

I attach the configuration that was causing the problem

I then changed that config , imitating the XFree config that was working
with Sarge; see 2nd attachemt. If I start X using
 /usr/bin/X11/X +xinerama -layout xinerama_layout
everything works fine.

Bug#435226: linux-image-2.6.22-1-powerpc nvidia frame buffer and ams problems

2007-07-30 Thread Antonio-M. Corbi Bellot
Package: linux-image-2.6.22-1-powerpc
Version: 2.6.22-3
Severity: normal

*** Please type your report below this line ***
Since linux-image-2.6.22-1-powerpc_2.6.22-1_powerpc.deb was out
I decided to give it a try in my 12 powerbook.

I have tried versions 2.6.22-1, 2.6.22-2 and 2.6.22-3.

It all seems to work ok except for:

1) the framebuffer 'resolution' detection, I mean that in the booting process
I get taller letters (deformed, they are stretched, also happens the same
with the penguin logo) and the prompt is lost somewhere down under the screen.

I can solve this by blindly typing: fbset 1024x768-60, but this
didn't happen with kernels up to (and included) 2.6.21.

I have tried several possible combinations in yaboot.conf:

- append=video=nv:1024x768-60 ...
- append=video=rivafb:1024x768-60
...
without luck.

Being video=ofonly the only one that gives a 'correct' frame buffer,
but I lose the ability to dim the screen backlight.

2) it seems there's no ams (apple motion sensor) module built,
it would be nice to have it.

So it looks like a problem with the usb ethernet connection to the cable
 modem.
I've posted a query on the linux-usb-users mailing list, but got no replies
 so far.

I'd appreciate any feedback on this.

cool.
did you check if 2.6.22 works?
there are images in unstable, that would be great.

also an entry in bugzilla.org seems a good step so that upstream
doesn't forget aboves bug, please forward the bugzilla bug nr.

I've compiled a vanilla 2.6.22.1 from kernel.org and the frame buffer
works ok, so I think it must be a config option in the Debian package. I
attach you my 2.6.22.1 config in case you want to see it. I've to tell
you that I've not checked it very well, but I remember I didn't managed
to make usb work...but the frame buffer problem isn't anymore with this
config.

Bug#435226: log's incomplete

2007-07-30 Thread Benjamin Herrenschmidt
The log is incomplete... looks like the bcm43xx driver is so verbose, it
kicked useful things out. Thus I can't see the output from the video
driver which is the interesting bit...

Also, is it nvidiafb or rivafb ?

Cheers,
Ben.

Bug#435241: XEN: 4gb seg fixup in Dom0 reproducible with xen-tools

2007-07-30 Thread galahad_debian
Package: linux-image-2.6.18-4-xen-686
Version: 2.6.18.dfsg.1-12etch2
Severity: important

When using XEN in Debian I get repeatably lots of pages containing 4gb
seg fixup-errors (details below) although i'm using libc6-xen and retried
with /lib/tls removed as well.
I was able to reproduce it every time and on different machines. Without
starting any DomU enter the following command in Dom0 to create a new DomU
with bootstraping (package xen-tools):

xen-create-image --hostname testetch2 --debootstrap --dist etch

I already assigned this bug report to xen-utils where I was hinted that
this is not an issue with xen-tools
(http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=431041).

ERROR-DESCRIPTION:

The errors apear shortly after this line appears...

Installing your system with debootstrap mirror
http://debian.inode.at/debian/

... and won't stop until the next line (Done) from xen-tools
appears.Errors (400+ lines) like this clutter up the the console:

printk: 148430 messages suppressed.
4gb seg fixup, process apt-get (pid 12238), cs:ip 73:b7d09ccc

And can be found in the syslog too:

Jun 28 17:33:32 debian kernel: printk: 148430 messages suppressed.
Jun 28 17:33:32 debian kernel: 4gb seg fixup, process apt-get (pid
12238), cs:ip 73:b7d09ccc

They vary in the numbers and the process; other processes besides apt-get
are e.g.:
mount, base-files.post, dpkg, tar, update-alternat, tar, frontend, locale,
dpkg-deb, dpkg-divert, preinst, ls
... and much more.

USED CONFIGURATION:

I am using Debian GNU/Linux 4.0 etch with the following components (from
dpkg -l, value in brackets is column version):

linux-image-2.6.18-4-xen-686 (2.6.18.dfsg.1-12etch2)
libc6-xen (2.3.6.ds1-13)
linux-modules-2.6.18-4-xen-686 (2.6.18.dfsg.1-12etch2)
xen-hypervisor-3.0.3-1-i386-pae (3.0.3-0-2)
xen-linux-system-2.6.18-4-xen-686 (2.6.18.dfsg.1-12etch2)
xen-utils-3.0.3-1 (3.0.3-0-2)
xen-tools (2.8-2)
xen-utils-common (3.0.3-0-2)

Both machines have pae in their /proc/cpuinfo.

FURTHER INFOS:

Another interesting fact is that the same approach in Ubuntu 7.04 Server
(which is a Debian-derivate after all) works fine. Maybe it's possible to
narrow the bug hunt by looking what's different there? I give the
information about the Ubuntu packages as well, probably they will be
useful. If not feel free to ignore the information:
The xen-tools version in Ubuntu is 3.0.3-0ubuntu1 and libc6-xen is
2.5-0ubuntu14.

Regards,
Andreas

Is it possible that deboostrap (used by xen-tools) has installed the
regular libc6 in the chroot initially and only installs libc6-xen later
on, i.e. when the messages stop? All commands run in the chroot in that
interval would then use the wrong libc, regardless of which is installed
on the host.

I don't see a special case in debootstrap for the xen libc, xen-tools
installs libc6-xen later on.

Ian.

Bug#404503: typo

2007-07-30 Thread Egmont Koblinger
An obvious temporary workaround is __not__ using an __8-bit__ locale...

This is a quite serious typo that inverts the sense of the sentence...

By the way, I don't agree that this is a good workaround, as it leads to
different system setup, filenames or text file contents being encoded in
different charset etc... so you'll get completely different result. A good
workaround is to use other input methods, e.g. a good terminal emulator
under X, or Alt+Number from numpad, or loading a keymap that contains the
desired accented letters without dead keys...

Descriptions for binary packages linux-modules-2.6.16-2-xen-686,
linux-modules-2.6.16-2-xen-k7 and
linux-modules-2.6.16-2-xen-vserver-686 are missing important
information.
There is obviously something wrong since
linux-modules-2.6.16-2-xen-vserver-686 and
linux-modules-2.6.16-2-xen-686 have identical descriptions. Also, I
don't have a clue about the rationale for these packages, but in
general, the descriptions do not give a clue what is the difference
between the modules included in, for example,
linux-modules-2.6.16-2-xen-686, and those in, in this example,
linux-image-2.6.16-2-686.

Bug#419197: sane-backends with CONFIG_USB_SUSPEND workaround uploaded to unstable

2007-07-30 Thread Julien BLACHE
Hi,

FYI:

I've just uploaded to unstable a new version of sane-backends which
includes a workaround for CONFIG_USB_SUSPEND. This workaround only
works with Linux 2.6.22 up, though.

As far as sane-backends (and sane-backends-extras) is concerned, this
bug can be closed; the problems we've seen are in fact hardware bugs
related to the improper support of USB suspend by most (if not all)
USB scanners.

The workaround included in sane-backends is only active for scanners
supported by sane-backends; other packages like hpoj/hplip or
libgphoto may still encounter this problem until they apply a similar
workaround.

JB.

Bug#435226: log's incomplete

2007-07-30 Thread Antonio-M. Corbi Bellot
Benjamin Herrenschmidt [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:

The log is incomplete... looks like the bcm43xx driver is so verbose, it
kicked useful things out. Thus I can't see the output from the video
driver which is the interesting bit...

Also, is it nvidiafb or rivafb ?

After sending the bug report I compiled myself a vanilla 2.6.22.1 from
kernel.org and the framebuffer is correctly detected and resolution set
(1024x768 for my powerbook-12). So it must be a problem with the debian
config (I think).

 Hi,

After reading the thread on debianhelp [0], I wonder whether your

check whether you get any error messages from wpa in the logs (dmesg,

Maybe our Debian Kernel have CONFIG_USB_SUSPEND enabled?

Bug#435280: black screen after X starts (Radeon Xpress 200M)

2007-07-30 Thread Zack Weinberg
Package: linux-image-2.6.22-1-686
Version: 2.6.22-3
Severity: normal

With kernel 2.6.22-1-686, my laptop's screen goes black when X starts
and stays that way. I can reboot by pressing the power button. This does
not happen with 2.6.21-2 (2.6.21-6).

I am appending Xorg.0.log to the bug report (generated under 2.6.21).
Please let me know if you need any further information.

yaird support/bugreports against linux-2.6

2007-07-30 Thread Touko Korpela
Maybe you could take a look for reportbug script code example from
glibc. They added script for preventing bogus bug reports against their
package. Could same be added to kernel package telling it's bug in
yaird and not in kernel?
In my opinion you should keep support for alternate initrd generators.

Yes, unless I misunderstand you. I tried several options at the yaboot

I sure that problem is in postinst script, I got an expectet result

Just to make sure I understand properly: with video=ofonly and X with
the config below, you still get a black screen ? It looks like the
monitor powers off right ? I saw that with issues with Apple doing
non-kosher things with the DDC line but we had that fixed long ago...

Bug#421816: status?

2007-07-30 Thread Frederik Schueler
Hello,

what is the status of this ITP?

OpenAIS is a required component for the new upstream version of the
redhat cluster suite.
We would like to update rh-cluster ASAP as the current version does not
work with kernels newer than 2.6.20, and for this we want to have the
maintainership of all concerned packages in the kernel team.

So, please hand the package over.

Thanks in advice
Frederik Schüler

Debian Installer Status Update - 30th July 2007

2007-07-30 Thread Otavio Salvador
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

First we'd like to say thank you to Frans Pop by his work as Debian Installer
Release Manager and we (Jeremy, Joey and Otavio) are starting to work as a team
to manage the next Debian Installer release.

It won't be an easy task and we'll do mistakes, for sure, but we're very
commited to get it done.

Bear on mind that we're intending to have a team-like coordination of the Debian
Installer release process and that means you're free to collaborate to it.
Please
report any issue you have experienced and that's not reported here so we can
keep
the whole installer quality as good as we can.

Just in case you wonder, we hope to make a beta1 release on the end of
September. :)

New stuff
- -

 * Transition from devfs style device name is now complete.
 * sparc32 is gone, and code has been cleaned up.

Breakage in daily builds
-

 * arm (ads_cf) had a build-failure due the lack of pcmcia-cs-udeb but it's now
addressed and should be ok by tomorrow.

 * The installation problem due the missing symbols still exists in some
architectures since the conflict between libc-dev and linux-libc-dev (IIUC)
   isn't resolved yet (#434040).

 * mips and mipsel builds are still broken. A possible solution has been
identified and we are waiting for actions by the daily build maintainer.

 * weekly CD builds for sparc are broken.

Other issues
-

 * Chinese (and Japanese/Korean) texts issue in slang2 (#425835) is still there.

 * Regressions in cleaning old LVM partitions (#425829) unfixed as well.

Kernel status
- -

 * linux-modules-di-m68k-2.6 isn't uploaded due the lack of loop-aes and
squashfs
   since linux-headers lack modules.lds files (#402061).

 * hppa has been switched to 2.6.21 but the kernel is currently affected by
   #431773, #427398, #433768 - all marked as pending.

 * sparc kernel seems to produces unkillable processes (#433187).

Installation Images
- ---

 * netinst images are huge due debian-cd inclusion of excluded packages
   dependencies (#410418).

dkt - debian kernel toolkit

2007-07-30 Thread Bastian Blank
Hi folks

Some of you already know that I'm working on something new. It is for
named dkt, debian kernel toolkit[1]. It is a replacement for the
maintainer script parts of kernel-package. But it can be extended to do
much more.

The features for a first release should be at least:
- Support for linux, xen and xenolinux images.
- Generic image sorting and selection like update-grub, but more
configurable (see [2] for some preliminary examples).
- Support for grub, lilo, zipl and yaboot.
- fstab-rewriting (this is not part of the core implementation).
- Support for initramfs-tools.

The following things probably won't be supported:
- symlink-farm in /boot.

The design looks a little bit like Apache. The real functionality is
loaded as modules and are glued together with a rather small core.

Bastian
