It complains for proc filesystem non mounted, but I cannot mount
procfilesys in my chroot-ed partition.
So I suppose I can do the following (if someone want to confirm it):
- boot with SID netinst CD
- mount the root partition of newly installed system on my ibook
- mount the /proc directory on the proc subdir of my system partition
- maybe I'll do the same with sys directory
- chroot to my system partition
- run ybin from there (yaboot package already downgraded)
- reboot all the system

I've attached my device tree in case that might help. I extracted it
from sysfs after booting.

I provided my OF information here:

https://lists.debian.org/debian-powerpc/2017/10/msg00124.html

load-base is 0x80.

The first time I ever started playing with OF when last October when I
was battling to get Debian/sid running (because yaboot was dying).

Google searches of the problem show that it is not uncommon for G4
iBooks to have this issue. The solution was always to install the older
yaboot 1.3.16, which I could confirm by booting with the Jessie
ISO. Last October I took the time to bisect the issue, which is what led
to my patch to revert the TEXTADDR.

I would be happy to try other patches if you think it is due to
something else.

I think the patch in question is here:
https://lists.debian.org/debian-powerpc/2017/10/msg00118.html.

However from my work on OpenBIOS something doesn't seem quite right here
- are you able to provide a complete log of the boot over the serial
console or similar so we can look?

My first query is whether you've ever changed the value of "load-base"
from its default in OF? In my device tree dumps, the iBook reports a
default load-base of 0x80, so that leaves plenty of space for the OF
bootloader to load the yaboot bootstrap and then pull in the 2nd stage
at 0x10.

It might be that I can figure out the issue by setting up a
qemu-system-ppc and (manually hacked) OpenBIOS in the same way.

ATB,

Mark.

This is no reason to panic. Keep in mind you can always boot from the
Jessie installer and start a shell. And with chroot you can get into
your system.

At this point your options are to install the jessie yaboot package and
re-run ybin. Or you could install a fixed sid yaboot package and re-run
ybin.

I've uploaded a fixed sid yaboot package to my private server:

http://ogness.net/debian/yaboot/

Whether or not you want to trust my key/signature is up to you.

I am typing this email from the exact same laptop that you are trying to
get running. Once you get a working yaboot installed, everything will
run fine. And there are plenty of mails on this list that will provide
information about moving from yaboot to grub, which although
unnecessary, is the preferred boot loader going forward.

This is a missing feature in Debian Installer which doesn't provide a mirror
list for Debian Ports at the moment. This is also going to be fixed soonish.

No, it's an unofficial release. It's still a regular version of Debian but
you don't get the full support that you get with a full release. So, if
something breaks, it's not considered serious although we're going to fix
it.

Yes, the latest stable version of Debian dropped support for 32-Bit
PowerPC. However, you can still install the unstable version of Debian
which should run smoothly on your iBook (at least it does on my iBook G4).

You can fetch the installation image here:

Let me know if you run into issues. There have been recently changes
on the server side for PowerPC for which we should build fresh

If the installation fails, I have a good reason to finally do that.

Wow. That's old and not very informative.

Shoot. That has a lot of old information in it, too. And I think all

Still, take the hour or two to scan through that and note the stuff

Well, that's no fun.

Does Tiger boot? Do you trust it not to have malware that would
install backdoors on Linux installation CDs?

If you use Mac OS to download and burn he install CDs, you need to be
careful how you do it. The easy way to save an install imge to a CD
or DVD ends up just saving an install image to a CD or DVD. I think
you have similar problems on MSWindows systems.

I think my memory tells me that you can right-click the image file and
get a menu that inlcudes the option to burn the image to disk. Or
select the image file and look in the menu bar menus for an entry that
says it will burn the image to disk. I think there's one other way,
but it's not coming to me, and, frankly, I'm demotivated to try
installing Jessie on my one remaining functional PPC Mac to remind
myself how.

I think you can burn the install CD on a Linux system without too much
fuss. CDs are cheap enough, give it a try.

and I'm not sure if any

Of course.

Don't think too hard about it, for starters.

Now that you've read the stuff on the debian site tell yourself it's
mostly old information. If you can get the network install image
burned on a CD properly, boot it with the magic keys.

(What were those? oh, yeah, according to my ancient blog post about
doing this with Fedora on a clamshell, it's just holding the C key
down while the machine boots with the install CD in the CD drive. If
you are interested, that post is here:

http://reiisi.blogspot.jp/2009/05/fedora-on-old-clamshell-ibook.html

It may explain some things, may confuse you with unnecesary information.)

Once the installer is booted, just answer the questions. Since you
don't want to dual-boot, you really shouldn't have to pay too much
attention to things. Don't worry that it seems to need one or two more
partitions than it should, you won't run short of partitions. Don't
worry about openfirmware, the way they have it set up to relay through
the partitions should make booting automatic.

Oh, there is a PowerPC list for debian. I'll cross-post this to it, to
save you some trouble finding it.

And have fun.

Does Tiger boot? Do you trust it not to have malware that would

If you use Mac OS to download and burn he install CDs, you need to be

you have similar problems on MSWindows systems.

I think my memory tells me that you can right-click the image file and
get a menu that inlcudes the option to burn the image to disk. Or
select the image file and look in the menu bar menus for an entry that

No. Upstream Mesa Radeon drivers no longer work without KMS.

Finally, I noticed that the ondemand governor on current kernels no

You're mistaken, ondemand traditionally never worked on *Books. But the

debian on iBook G4

2013-01-21 Thread ruben
Hello,

I am an old-time debian user and had debian installed on my iBook G4
since around 2007. However, something must have hit my head a couple
of months ago and I thought OSX might be more useful for this old
laptop, since I mainly use it for browsing anyway. So I wiped it clean
and put OSX on it. This didn't last very long though, and I decided I
wanted debian back, so I took the netinstall for powerpc testing and
installed that.

However, I noticed that gtkpbbuttons and powerprefs is no longer
maintained in the debian repos. I definitely still had gtkpbbuttons
installed when I wiped it clean, but I'm not sure about powerprefs.
I've always used pbbuttonsd, gtkpbbuttons and powerprefs on my ibook
and never had any complaints about it. It seems weird to me that
pbbuttonsd is still there and the other 2 were dropped. Hmm... looks
like pbbuttonsd has been orphaned...

Because of that, I wonder if there are any alternatives maintained for
those programs? I heard about pommed, but it's still not clear to me
if it's really an alternative for pbbuttonsd on powerpc machines.

Besides that, I also noticed that I no longer have 3d hardware
acceleration. I actually discovered that before I wiped the iBook and
it had to do with older drivers being dropped during the transition to
KMS. Anything changed on that topic? In any case, my glxinfo claims
I'm using the software rasterizer. Related to that, I also noticed
that the terminals become unreadable whenever I shutdown the display
manager... and become readable again as soon as I start a display
manager.. any tips on that? I don't know if this is important, but I
use lightdm as a display manager and i3wm as a window manager.

Also, I configured middle and right click as fn-ctrl and fn-option,
but it does not seem to work consistently. I enabled it with the
following in /etc/sysctl.conf. Any hints on that?

# enable mouse button emulation
dev.mac_hid.mouse_button_emulation = 1

Finally, I noticed that the ondemand governor on current kernels no
longer works with the G4. If I'm not mistaken, this did work with
older kernels, so I'm a bit surprised. Which kind of external tools
can be used to get similar behavior?

Hoping to get some advice from other people that are still using
iBooks/PowerBooks.

cheers,
Ruben

I don't think pommed does power-saving things like spin down the hard drive,
but I've never used it. I used to use powerprefs to configure pbbuttonsd, but
now I just edit /etc/pbbuttonsd.conf. It's not too hard.

Happens to me, too, when I shut down the display manager to create a xorg.conf

Mine looks like this and works fine:

dev/mac_hid/mouse_button_emulation = 1
dev/mac_hid/mouse_button2_keycode = 97
dev/mac_hid/mouse_button3_keycode = 96

97 is fn + ctrl and 96 is the enter key next to the right command key. If you
have mouseemu installed, that might cause a conflict.

There's cpufreqd, but it's kind of a hassle to set up. There used to be
powernowd, but I think that's in the process of being removed. Ubuntu's
PowerPC FAQ has some advice to install it. After powernowd got removed from
Testing by some overzealous purger, I just decided to not bother with any of it.

Ok, I should still have that config file somewhere.

Hah.. my enter key is remapped to a right control. But thanks for
mentioning mouseemu. It seems I have mouseemu installed... I'll
uninstall that one and I hope that's why it's acting weird.

Re: debian on iBook G4

I too have found this bug, and it slays me that I cannot find a way to
accurately phrase the problem, or guess what exactly is
the software responsible for the bug.

I'm certain that it's not that the virtual console needs a window manager
running to be readable, because during bootup there is
a significant time after initial console font switching and before the window
manager stops where the text is readable.

Sorry, its a wifi usb adapter... the disadvantage that it occupies a USB and
little aesthetic, but functional, check the realtek wifi chipset and buy the
correct for GNU/Linux

The chipset are:
RT8187B and RTL8187L (the last works great I have one, and works with Mac
OSX 10.3, also for not install a big OSX).

Can check more information in www.realtek.com.tw

  I have one question, though.

  correctly).

Unfortunately, I can't find almost anything apple-related here in Brazil,
but I would still like to put one of those cards in my iBook G3 600MHz.

Have you looked in forum.macnews.com.br? I found one there earlier this

If anybody could send me one, please get in touch with me.

The iBook I got it for is half-dead now, when the healthy half dies
(waiting for I friend of mine to have time to disassemble/reasassemble
it) I could have an useless one here in Curitiba.

  Thanks, Rogério Brito.

Hello, you can buy one airport card in Ebay, I bought one and works great,
you need follow the next tutto.

http://nuevaeracr.blogspot.com/2009/02/actualizar-el-driver-orino-de-las.html

Also the wiki of Debian:

http://wiki.debian.org/orinoco

Also in Ebay sell a USB airport Adapter, Mac OS X and GNU/Linux compatible,
have one Realtek Chipset, in the home page of Realtek have the source
drivers (the CD have binary i386 drivers).

http://cgi.ebay.com/USB-Wireless-WiFi-for-Apple-Mac-iMac-G4-OS-X-10-3-10-4_W0QQitemZ120401973658QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item120401973658_trksid=p3286.c0.m14_trkparms=72%3A1205|66%3A2|65%3A12|39%3A1|240%3A1318|301%3A1|293%3A1|294%3A50

First ask the chipset and check in realtek the compatibility, because one of
the chips dont work with mac os x 10.3 or later, but in linux works all.

Next you can use WiCD for networking administration:

http://nuevaeracr.blogspot.com/2009/04/redes-inalambricas-con-debian-gnulinux.html

Also can use add the backports and install wicd.

Run ifup eth1 instead, as this will call both wpa_supplicant and

Please try using a 2.6.28 kernel image from kernel-archive.buildserver.netand

At the very least, verify WPA-PSK supported is shown in the kernel ring

CCMP, which is not currently supported.

I am the network administrator, what type of security is better to works

Only WPA2 with CCMP can be considered secure. Anything else is more or
less broken.

My machine is a Ibook G3 800MHz with Airport Card. I dont like network

How configure wpa personal security with tkip in wifi radar?
How configure my network card in /etc/network/interfaces?
 How configure wpa supplicant?

Sorry for my bad english, and thanks.

I was having a hard time connecting my iBook G3 with an AirPort Card
running lenny using wpa at home. With knetwork-manager the processes
always hang with no results and the same for wifi radar.

Then I found this tip

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=12045

I don't know why but It just works for me (now my iBook is at a repair
shop with a dead black screen). If you connect to many wireless
networks it would be very annoying because you would have to do a lot
of /etc/network/interfaces editing.

How configure my network card in /etc/network/interfaces?
  How configure wpa supplicant?

I was having a hard time connecting my iBook G3 with an AirPort Card
running lenny using wpa at home. With knetwork-manager the processes
always hang with no results and the same for wifi radar.

 Then I found this tip

 http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=12045

I don't know why but It just works for me (now my iBook is at a repair
shop with a dead black screen). If you connect to many wireless
networks it would be very annoying because you would have to do a lot
 of /etc/network/interfaces editing.

 Cheers

You would be better off using a released (ie. non-rc) 2.6.28 kernel, which can
be acquired through a Debian kernel snapshot package for your system. This is
described in the orinoco Debian Wiki page previously mentioned to you.

 I configured the wpa_supplicant.conf:
[snip]
 ctrl_interface_group=0
[..]
 ap_scan=2

Why are you specifying these options? The version of wpa_supplicant in Lenny
(0.6.4) does not require ap_scan=2, this is only necessary for wpa_supplicant
versions = 0.5.7 with the orinoco driver. Also, ctrl_interface_group is
deprecated. These configuration options should be removed unless absolutely
required.

Please try using a 2.6.28 kernel image from kernel-archive.buildserver.net and
ensure you have acquired and installed the necessary Agere station firmware
(agere_sta_fw.bin). Refer to the orinoco page on the Debian Wiki for
instructions.

At the very least, verify WPA-PSK supported is shown in the kernel ring
buffer (dmesg) after loading the orinoco driver.

I believe that network management is only integrated to Gnome and XFCE and
knetwork management must be installed for use in KDE, I think it is used as
an applet for the desktop, while the use E16 is more limited. That would be
GNU / Linux if we are left with only a single way of doing things, the
variety is success. I am also very curious and I like seeing things under

I am the network administrator, what type of security is better to works
with Debian GNU/Linux? Could change it WPE, WPA Personal AES or another.

Thanks for your answers, sorry for my bad english, I cant find active

Debian on ibook

2006-01-08 Thread Murk
I have a four(ish) year old ibook sitting on my desk. It was doing
nothing so I though 'let's give debian a whirl'.

I have it to a terminal prompt, can ssh out and things such as that, but
I am having a few difficulties, which I would appreciate some help with:

Am a linux/debian newbug, so please don't assume anything!

Order of criticality: 2, 1, 4, 3.

1) Keyboard mapping. I have a UK mac keyboard on the ibook. How would I
select this? (the keyboard doesn't seem to have a tilde character, which
is pretty important!) Is there a relatively easy way to configure my own
mapping?

2) Running gnome. I have got close, ish. I have had red crosses on the
screen, some grey boxes with lines on... mostly things that look like TV
test signals. I have had to ssh into the machine to recover things too.
No joy. There were a set of questions about chipsets, bus settings,
monitor refresh rates I do not know how to answer these. I would not
have known how to get this info even under OS9.

3) then there are relatively minor issues like the sound, and
configuring power options (e.g. what pushing the power button does, and
the throbbing LED behind the power button.

4) I would like to give specific users (not all users) the ability to
power off without being root.

My backup plan is to move to OSX, I was on OS9, but I'd really like to
get debian going as a learning tool.

Help gratefully received.

Hi Mark,
I'd suggest you get a Ubuntu Breezy/ppc install disc (or it's live
version if you just want to test it) from ubuntu.com and install that.

Ubuntu is more or less Debian preconfigured for desktop usage.
That should solve most, if not all, your issues.

In X, dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg should do the trick.

Again, badly configure X server. You should try to understand which

Try with lspci -v and if you have no clue on interpreting it post it in
the list.

For sound, install alsa-related packages and then issue alsaconf. Power
management is taken care of by pbbuttonsd.

 4) I would like to give specific users (not all users) the ability to

For that you have to install sudo and configure it correctly. Otherwise,
create a group called shutdown and add to this group the users you want
to give shutdown privileges, then chown /sbin/shutdown to root:shutdown.

Have fun!

problems installing Debian on iBook G3 - The attempt to extract the Rescue Floppy from disk failed

Hi all,

I have tried also to install from an older Woody 3.0

curious thing about that, is that I have already
succesfully installed Debian ppc in an early time from
the same Woody 3.0 R2 media.

I have already searched for similar errors in the

The fact that you are getting a segmentation fault on two different
installation media sets suggests bad memory. Unfortunately I don't think
there's a bootable memory tester for powerpc.

kernel panic with previously working MOL OSX (Debian Sarge, iBook G4)

2004-10-28 Thread Des Johnston

I've also tried this on the MOL list, but for good measure (with
apologies in advance if it is too far off-list):

My MaconLinux installation was working quite happily until today, when it
started generating (Darwin) kernel panics on boot.

Several things have been updated on both the Debian and OSX sides since
the last successful MOL boot, so I am not quite sure what has triggered
the problem.

The setup is an iBook G4 1Mhz, running Debian PPC tracking unstable,
with Mac OSX 10.3 and MOL 0.9.70-8 from the Debian packages, along with
the 0.9.70-1 mol-macosx drivers.

On startmol -X I get the boot screen swiftly followed by a Darwin
kernel panic:

panic(cpu 0): Unable to find a driver for this platform: AAPL,MOL.

  Latest stack backtraceetc etc

Reinstalling the Debian packages has no effect, can I/should I reinstall
the OSX kexts. If so, how?

Any inspiration welcome...

Hi all.

I'm having some problems with Debian on an iBook G4. I've installed

ALSA does not find any, as well.
Now I've got another problem, avery time sistem boots the privileges of
/dev/null are changed to 644, and a lot of programs can't start
properly. I can't found which process/daemon makes this change. After
sistem boots, I change again privileges to 666, but every now and then
it is changed again to 644 while I'm working. And, again, I have not
found why. I think it's KDE because with GNome it seems it doesn't
happen, and while in KDE sistem almost hungs.

My sistem: iBook G4, 800MHz, 256MB RAM, kernel 2.6.5 (standard local

Anybody knows anything about this?

It seems many people build their kernels in /usr/src, [...]

compile kernels in /usr/src/linux, and instead do it in their home

the new (beta) Debian Installer worked (for me) out of the Box.

I think I tried it, but when I would select execute a shell, it would go on
with partitioning, not really caring about what I wanted, so I gave up and
whined in #debianppc :D
I'll mention it though,

Faster, hrmmm, difficult question. Depends what you mean by faster
I rather suspect. I'm using Debian a) because I'm a die-hard Debianite
and b) because, much as people tried to persuade me otherwise, OS X
irritated the hell out of me within hours. I've tried to use it actually
to do stuff over the past few days (frex LaTeX stuff) and it _really_
irritated me. Running twm with a few vagaries on Debian is an order of
magnitude improvement IM(A)O.

Things like gnome/kde don't exactly run with great speed; but neither
does OS X when one has to grobble around through system prefs trying
to switch from static IP (work) to DHCP (home).

As I said, it depends what you're wanting to do with your machine!

Diana.

Well, I installed wmaker and then went through your xserver installation

HOWEVER!

Here's a work around I figured out, but I do wish to get this working right.

What I do is I issue the command startx -lf
/etc/alternatives/x-window-manager

Then when x starts up with its grey screen there is an xterm console as
well. In the xterm console I then enter the command kde2 and voila! I
have KDE2.

this means that you have everything working well.

The page imply you have some piece of windowmanager installed
before trying to get X woking:

apt-get install wmaker

and then redo everything you did so far and proceed
with what you find on the page.
When you get this working, I suggest you to try
something like gnome, which I guess you'd like better.

Shut down you display manager, if you use one, and try starting

If X started manually gets well, probably your problem is
the windowmanager (as I'm convinced it to be).

Re: Debian on iBook issues

Hello,
  Mouse:

Is there a way to make the really stupid one-button mouse do a right
click, say, as holding the Ctrl key and clicking?

somebody, some times ago post a patch to do this. browse the archives
it will be easy to find
I'm sorry, but I'm also interested by that and I can't find it in the
archives... Does anybody remember when it was or even still have the
message?

Thank you

There appear to be massive dependency issues with this. Is it adviseable
to meet its dependencies (i.e., install all the apps that I assume are
for sarge)?

OpenOffice

I assume that if I want to install openoffice I should use the MAC
version. Also is there an address that can be used in sources.list for
this?

This is what I use:

# OpenOffice for PPC
deb http://ftp.freenet.de/pub/ftp.vpn-junkies.de/openoffice unstable main
contrib

jas.

Re: Additional Debian on iBook issues

2002-11-20 Thread Matthew Yee-King
i just got it from here:

http://whiteboard.openoffice.org/mirrors/ppclinks.html

untarred it and ran the install script you get, as root. then i installed it
for each user by running

 /usr/local/OpenOffice.org1.0.1/setup

as that user.

no problem!

Ok, I dowloaded Mij's XF86Config-4 files and put it in /etc/X11and low
and behold I got an x session. However, i get just the log on screen.
If I log on, it just returns to the log on screen. What's up now?
