Great ... I have solved my problem!
I thougt I had installed my new kernel by typing dpkg --install bla
bla., but that just made a file named vmlinuz-2.0.30 in /boot. I just
copied that file to /vmlinuz, and everything works fine!

I've been trying to download a large file (~32Mb) without sucess using
ftp and ncftp, so I pulled lftp (because it advertises that it will
checkpoint). When I try to download, however, it seems not to do
anything. For example:

and it just hangs. Same if I do cd pub

installing a new motherboard, but I have very little in the
