In short, read(fd, buffer, 0) returns a -1 with errno = EAGAIN.
According to the manpage, read(fd, buffer, 0) should *always* return 0

option in /etc/X11/XF86Config file even though I was selecting 2Mg RAM
during setup. Uncomment it and up she came.
