I am running debian unstabe on a couple of my machines. I have run apt-get
update and apt-get upgrade yesterday, and on two machines it ran perfectly, but
the third machine which is a server on LAN which had an 32 days of uptime
crashed with kernel panic caused by dpkg... so I rebooted

I'm not sure how the two interact.
Simple. You set dselect's access method to apt in dselect.
Then you run update in dselect. It makes apt do all the

The lilo problem is solved . I unintentionally typed something into

pppconfig will not solve my minicom and wvdial problem. pppconfig enables
pon to work and get me on line now.

If you feel you must use wvdial, look at /etc/chatscripts/provider and
/etc/ppp/peers/provider to see how pppconfig has configured the
connection. That may give

I couldn't write a good explanation, but I do know that apt-get
dist-upgrade took my version of potato from 2.2r0 to 2.2r3 in one move,

Hello!
I've installed the samba packages on my server.
Today someone startet his win95 network client and my server responds with
starting nmbd (as told from inetd.conf) then it gave some exit status 0x1 and
flooded the system. Some time later, I've not been at home during this, the

You choose whether to start from inetd or as a daemon when you install
samba. something like:
dpkg --configure samba
(UNTESTED) should let you reset it.
The reason to run as a daemon instead of from inetd, particularly for
nmbd, is that windows clients broadcast name resolution requests *a
