Amazingly, this worked. It hung for about two minutes after the
hardware detect, and after I'd given up, continued going. Here's the
boot options I used:

In the mean time apt-get install libc6-i386 (which is basically an
upgrade) solved the problem. The other issues are

If one produces a raw PCM dump of /dev/dsp such as

The result is an unsigned 8-bit 8-KHZ audio dump captured in
