l get to those soon by booting from the original Knoppix DVD.
The errors don't seem to be in /etc/apt or anything.
I'm almost at the point of reinstalling, but I really don't want to do
that. Any other ideas?

still hangs!

find manuals for most Adaptec cards at <http://www.adaptec.com>. You will
have to poke around, though. They come in PDF (Adobe Acrobat) format, if I
remember.
Hope this helps. This list was *really* helpful when I was setting up
Debian; I hope I can
stay at custom.2.0, which was my first kernel 2.2.9 build.
Surely this isn't the right (documented) behavior? The man pages for
make-kpkg aren't much help.
