Help!!!
I got the following messages when I was booting up:
"EXT2-fs: group descriptors corrupted:"
followed a few lines later by:
"kernel panic: unable to mount root fs on 03:02"
after which everything stops. The same thing happened when I tried using my
boot floppy.
That's what the problem was. Thanks for the help.

I decided to compile a new kernel (2.2.1) to upgrade from 2.0.38 for my 486

For what it's worth, I'm running 2.2.14 on two of my m

it has installed the image and then when I reboot: "kernel panic No init" I
didn't have this problem 2 weeks ago.
I don't seem to be able to revise the kernel.

Both boards I've tried had i430VX chipset on them, I'm no longer sure

Are there any bugs in 2.2.10 connected to VX chipset?

Sounds like you didn't compile in the driver for your harddisk. You
did compile in (not as module) the IDE drive

strange
maybe you compiled the root fs as a module (which is not to be
done), but how would you boot?...
ah there's the answer:

You might be making your kernel too simple
fter about 3/4 of a screen
of normal startup messages, the system halts with:
VFS: Can't open root device 03:01
Kernel Panic: VFS unable to mount root fs on 03:01
What do these messages mean, what have I done to myself, and how can I undo it?

Hello:
I recently installed Debian 1.3.1 that I purchased from Linux System
Labs. I have had several problems, and cannot seem to find the
answers.
I installed the system by booting from a floppy and installing the
base system from cdrom. (My cdrom is bootable; the cd is bootable,
but for some
Solved! The problem was a Kernel panic error on startup, just after resetting
the SCSI bus. Many thanks to Peter S. Galbraith, Bob McGowan, and Nathan Norman.
Norman both identified the problem as "the (in)famous AHA-2740/2840 boot
failure". He offered to build me a kernel but said h

You're confusing address and device I think. lilo is talking devices:
major 3 minor 0 is hda; i.e. it can't read the partition table on the
1st IDE disk.
In an earlier message, I think you mentioned a kernel panic implying that
your floppy kernel was trying to boot from device 03:0
