Simplemente no

E sim, há impacto no I/O, tradicionalmente a compactação
AIT e storages.

http://paulbradley.tv/44/
http://www.delorie.com/gnu/docs/tar/tar_133.html

do site remoto.

Gnus is very good with news and mail, in my opinion. If you only need
it for reading maildir folders, then I'd use these settings:

(setq gnus-select-method '(nnnil ))

(setq gnus-secondary-select-methods
  '((nnmaildir (directory ~/mAiltesting/Mail/Maildir/

You can put them in your ~/.gnus.el file. When you are in Gnus's *Group*
buffer press F to find new groups. It should find your maildirs.

Do I need to know some keystrokes to switch to the mail or something?
Or somehow import mail into/as newsgroups?

In Gnus mail is also like news. They use the same interface and mostly
the same terminology. Some things can be confusing first but it's really
powerful to use the same interface for both.

Why would I need primary and secondary select methods (Whatever select
 methods are ...)?

Select methods basically mean different ways of getting news/mail. I
suggest configuring gnus-select-method to '(nnnil ), i.e. nothing,
because if you, at some point, add different select methods it's much
clearer if there are no two different classes of select methods. Put all
methods to gnus-secondary-select-methods.

with rethinking the brand loyalty.

Right now, much as I hate to admit it, Intel X58/Core i7 is the way to

board I have successfully installed 5 times, so far. Debian runs fine,
with a recent enough kernel.

The down side is, the memory is DDR3, so you can't reuse the old sticks.
But, you can put in six of them! Garden-variety sticks from OCZ or
somewhere will take it to 12GB, or you can pay a premium, go with 4 Gig
sticks, and have 24GB.

(If you like to overclock, though, stick with three memory sticks. Yes,
three, not two or four. The LGA 1366 processors---i.e., Core i7s---are
triple-channel, they have an onboard memory controller that supports
three memory channels. Anyway, higher clocks on all-slots-filled
configurations are not supported.)

I have installed one GigaByte X58/i7 board, the EX58-UD5, and I dislike
it. Not recommended.

Core i7 boards are somewhat pricy, though. The new P55 chipset is
cheaper, and it supports the new Lynnfield CPU, that is, the core i5
chips. i5 just has double-channel support, so less costly to get
started. But I have no experience with them.

The point being that an Intel chip is, in my opinion, the current

Reliable remote logging with rsyslog on lenny

2009-07-19 Thread Cameron Hutchison
I'm trying to set up a couple of boxes that both run lenny (stable) for
remote logging. I have installed rsyslog on both boxes. One is to be the
log server, the other I want to log remotely to the log server.

According to the package description of rsyslog, it does reliable
syslog over TCP. According to the rsyslog homepage, this reliable
logging is RELP and can be enabled on the server like this:

$ModLoad imrelp
$InputRELPServerRun 2514

and on the client like this:

*.* :omrelp:192.168.0.1:2514

(where 192.168.0.1 is the address of the log server)

I cannot get this to work.

From what I can tell with netstat, rsyslogd is not listening on port
2514 on the server. The package also looks like it does not contain the
modules imrelp and omrelp - but I'm not sure about this. There aren't
any .so files for them in the module directory, but they may be built in
instead.

How do I enable the reliable logging feature of rsyslog?

remount removeable drive in Lenny - how?

2009-07-19 Thread Paul E Condon
I have no objection to the status of hal as a required part of a
standard desktop installation, but I do have a question as to how best
to deal with a peculiar situation.

I have several USB hard drives (ones with rotating machinery inside,
not solid state 'disks'). From time to time I need to perform format
maintenance on one of them. In order to do this, I look in /dev to see
what device name has been assigned to the drive, umount it, and do
whatever - e2fsck, tune2fs, etc. But when I'm finish doing
maintenance, how to I remount it without pulling the USB cable,
waiting a while, and reinserting the cable? Is there a console command
that I can type that avoids the extra wear on the fragile little
connectors and plugs? I'm looking for something that retriggers the
look-up of volume label and the creation of a mount-point in /media as
was there before I started mucking about.

Or is there another way to do the maintenance without umounting? (not
likely, I think)

The actions you listed change neither the partition layout nor

But, for hal-mounted devices, the umount also deletes the mount-point.
If I manually create a mount-point, which I must do prior to
attempting a manual mount, then the next time hal mounts this HD, it
creates a differently named mount point. I find this to be
unclean. And, also a lot of typing. And periodic housekeeping to keep
/media reasonably uncluttered.

I've faced the same problem yesterday, and I was not able to solve

again. But if I mount it in kde, and then ask to safely remove device,
then the device files pointing to the partitions are no longer in /dev/;
and even the device pointing to the whole disk (e.g. /dev/sdf) raises an
error when I do a simple `file -s /dev/sdf`.

  *install* the dependent *binary* packages.

Do you really mean ALL. You should start with build-essential
packages if you mean to say all build-dep packages. But I do not know
why you do this. You are doing cross compile. I do not see point of
 downloading source for all build-dep.

I just to build the dpkg. So I think getting all source packages of
build-dep is the first step. Then I'll build and install the build-dep and
finally build dpkg. Is this the way to go?

I guess this is best answered by reading CLFS itself. I am no expert.

I want to do this because I need to build dpkg on a CLFS system
(think it as a minimal linux system without debianization), and it's
crazy to download all dependent source packages of dpkg, right?

Not really if you need dpkg as you say for your system. After all you
asked to have Cross-Compiled Linux From Scratch (a.k.a CLFS).

Yeah, I just realize that. Thanks for your re-confirmation :-)

If you are building installation image only, you may not need dpkg.

Why not? I thought installation image should prepare all essential packages
which definitely includes dpkg if it's a Debian image, right?

Anyway, please google and ead things like:

Yeah, you got an endless ~./emacs with a lot things in it. But that

It seems to be fine with the ~/.gnus I created and happily displays an

BTW, is gnus good for organizing mail? Since it's a news reader, it
might not support that at all because you don't organize news. I'm
trying to find a MUA that supports organizing mail --- mutt, for

laptop double-suspends (sleeps on resume first time) if I use fn-hotkey

2009-07-19 Thread Jon Dowland
Hi folks,

I have this really weird and mildly annoying issue I cannot pin down. When I
suspend my laptop (thinkpad x40 running sid) using the Fn+F4 hotkey (which
sends an ACPI sleep event), my laptop sleeps. However, on trying to wake it
up, once wakeup is complete (I see a flash of gnome-screensaver) the laptop
sleeps again. This happens every time and exactly twice.

If I use another method to sleep (call pm-suspend or use gnome-power-manager's
buttons or the gnome menu) it does not occur.

Can anyone suggest where to look? I was hoping I would see either one utility
reporting more than one ACPI event in a log somewhere, or more than one
utility reporting handling one ACPI event, but I can't see anything at all :(

Re: lvm on an external enclosure?

Probably won't even squawk. IIRC, scanning for VGs is done during the boot
process as long as you have LVM installed, whether you are using it or not.

2. More importantly, what about when I power up the external
enclosure, after Linux is already running? Will lvm automagically
recognize the new drives as part of their own vg? Or will I have to
bounce lvm?

You *may* have to run 'vgscan vgchange -ay', but that should be enough.

Well, that didn't work...

If I umount the fs, then power-down the enclosure, and power it back
 up, these are the results:

Reboot and it works fine.

Failing that, you might have to modify your lvm.conf, but that's only if lvm
is, for some reason, not scanning those block devices for PV metadata.

We see more and more topics relating to suspend and the alike on this list. I
have, myself, put question here which were more related to debian-laptop

cents to the system would be to suggest that we (people with question specific
to laptop) start to post on the laptop mailing list. I will ...

ia32-apt-get or libc6-i386 on amd64, debian sid?

2009-07-19 Thread MRH
I'm pretty confused with the latest changes in sid on amd64. Do ia32-*
packages replace -i386 packages or they are alternatives? After
'upgrading' to ia32-apt-get I lost wine (however I found there is
ia32-wine, which unfortunately is not displayed in synaptic and I'm not
sure if it replaces wine, then what will happen if there will be 64bit
wine?), picasa, googleearth and some other packages.

Should I purge ia32-* and reinstall libc-i386 or wait?

Then what I understood reading ia32-apt-get doc and some previous post
it is supposed to be updated / upgraded separately to the apt-get and I
assume it won't be included / supported in synaptic?

RE: [Semi-OT] Need advice on AMD mobo

2009-07-19 Thread David Christensen
Mark Allums wrote:
 ... rethinking the brand loyalty.
The point being that an Intel chip is, in my opinion, the current
 overall winner.

I was an Intel guy for many years, after having been burned on no-name
motherboards. Intel's products and technical support were top-shelf 10+ years
ago. Then I got a CC820 board (recalled). Then they started releasing buggy
BIOS updates (D945GNT). Then their technical support got arrogant. Then Intel
shut down their open technical support forums. Etc..

So, I switched to AMD and Asus/NVIDIA about ~3 years ago. They work with
Windows; mostly. But, Linux or BSD is another story. The reality is that
there's more to a computer system than the CPU -- you need a motherboard,
chipset, memory, video, sound, Ethernet, serial, parallel, USB, Firewire,
eSATA, etc.. Assuming that the hardware is done right, much of that stuff
requires software -- e.g. kernel support and/or device drivers. Outdated,
reverse-engineered, and/or minimalist software might work for a plaything or
headless ancillary server, but forget about production servers, graphical
desktops, or even thin clients.

Companies that get in bed with Microsoft and pay for Windows Hardware Quality
Labs (WHQL) testing ensure that their products work with Windows. (NVIDIA
didn't/doesn't; therefore the problems.) But there is no single WHQL
equivalent for free/ open-source software (FOSS). So, it's up to the vendors
and the projects, and they don't have the Microsoft Windows tax to supplement
the costs. Intel supports FOSS -- paying employees/ contractors to work on it,
giving presentations/ classes, releasing technical information, releasing
source code drivers, etc.. Can someone name another major PC hardware vendor
who does the same? (If so, please do; I'd like to know.)

The end result is that, in general, Intel stuff is better supported in the FOSS
world. There are always exceptions; if you're willing to do the homework, get
out your wallet, and/or do the integration/ testing. I prefer a fast, easy,
and successful out-of-the-box experience, so my next motherboard and CPU are
likely to be Intel.

Ron Johnson wrote:
I looked into Intel, but I'm trying to reuse the CPU and RAM.

There's a saying -- throwing good money after bad. I mix, match, and run the
old stuff until it drops or becomes useless, sell or give away the leftovers:

and save the money for my next machine.

Segmentation fault in dpkg and aptitude

2009-07-19 Thread Bill Wohler
After making the following changes to pull in sid's bluez 4.0 package in

Segmentation fault

1st thing: if you don't already have sshd installed, try: apt-get
install openssh-server (that probably should start it as well)

If it's just not running, try: /etc/init.d/ssh start

Then make sure that your init files are set up properly:
- check /etc/inittab to see what your default runlevel is (probably 2)
- check /etc/rc2.d (or whatever your default is) for a file something
like S16ssh (to start ssh at boot time)
- if it doesn't exist, then you need to install an init file (sorry, I
forget the magic incantation to create init files)
