Vamos a ver. Me dispongo a intentar instalar Woody por
modem (suena hasta mal). ¿Por que os preguntareis?. Es
  sencillo.

actualicé a woody.

basico, puse los sources para woody, apt-get update, apt-get upgrade y
listo.

io=0x220 irg=7 dma=1 dma16=7 mpu_io=0x330
error:

/lib/modules/2.2.17/misc/es1371.o : invalid parameter parm_io
/lib/modules/2.2.17/misc/es1371.o : insmod
/lib/modules/2.2.17/misc/es1371.o failed

2001-04-28 Thread JUAN CARLOS AMENGUAL ARGUDO
Hola,

Ahora, me estoy planteando seriamente abandonarla

No comment.

# modprobe es1371.o

Si obtienes errores de símbolos no encontrados prueba a
cargar los módulos soundcore, soundlow y sound.

# modprobe soundcore.o
# modprobe soundlow.o
# modprobe sound.o

$ lpr fichero

directamente. Para más información:

$ man printcap
$ man magicfilter
$ man lpd
$ man lpr
$ man lpq
$ man lpc
$ man lprm
$ man lpstat

Creo que con eso de momento tienes. Suerte ;-)

[D_AN_T_T]. Y si a mi no me interesa recibir

 Hola,

Ahora, me estoy planteando seriamente
 abandonarla

No comment.

NADIE LE RESPONDA Y MENOS CON COPIA A LA LISTA (sí, estoy gritando). Pensad,

 he

  (...)

Can someone suggest places to look for the cause of this? Is there other
information I could find to help? I have tried the nm command with the
three functions referenced below, and the only consistent difference I can
see is the lack of a bunch of alphanumerics after the name shown on the last
  line of that listing.

this small difference in the symbolnames _could_ be an indication that
there's some kind of prototype mismatch. You might want to use nm's -C
option to demangle those cryptic alphanumerics. This will give you a more
human-readable output, though I'm not sure whether it'll help you beyond
that... (see 'man c++filt' for a short intro on what mangling is about).

The problem turned out to be in the get_atom_type.cc file. The top lines
are:

/* get_atom_type.cc */

/* #ifdef sgi */
#include stdio.h
#include get_atom_type.h
/* #else
extern C
{
#include stdio.h
#include get_atom_type.h
}
#endif  */

Note that I commented out all but the includes for an SGI. (Don't ask me
why/how that works... I stumbled onto it. I do thank Hendrik Sattler for
some prodding and another offer to help from Anthony Lau.)

I would try to locate the implementation of the 'get_atom_type(char *, char
 *)'
function in the source code (most probably in get_atom_type.cc) and see
whether it has the required prototype (the one that the linker's undefined
 reference message complains about).

I guess this is what the above lines involve?

Somehow, however, I doubt that some bug like this would have made it
into the AutoDock distribution. Or is this a brand new release, that no
one else has yet tried to compile?

I'm not sure. There are several packages at the ftp site which appear to be
transitional ones. My guess is this (the current one) still fits that
mold.

The group seems to focus largely on SGI, Alpha, Sun, HP, and Convex. The
calculations are quite intensive... perhaps they don't have many requests
for Linux/PC machines? There are some lines commented for Linux in the
Makefiles, but obviously there are other problems.

I'm admittedly a bit miffed by their complete lack of response in any way to
my emails. Maybe I'm too sensitive?? :)

Too bad this isn't open source -- otherwise I could have given it a
quick try myself... Anyway, good luck!

Thanks. I've already found another problem in a different program in the
package. Different post for that one.

G'day Alberto,

I've just had a very similar problem, fetchmail mail would run get the number

the problem wasn't in fetchmailrc but with my exim setup, try looking though

gnapster in gnome 1.4

2001-04-28 Thread Michael P. Soulier
Hey people. So I pointed my source.list at the red-carpet site for gnome
1.4, did an update and installed gnapster.

The following extra packages will be installed:
  libgdk-pixbuf2
The following NEW packages will be installed:
  gnapster libgdk-pixbuf2

No errors in the install, and yet...

[EMAIL PROTECTED] msoulier]$ gnapster
[1] 4495
[EMAIL PROTECTED] msoulier]$ gnapster: error while loading shared libraries:
gnapster: undefined symbol: stat

I take it that the dependencies on one of these is broken? I'll contact
the maintainer, but I'm wondering if anyone else had this problem.

Cheers,

Mike

You want to look at hotplug. It is in testing and unstable. If you are
running potato with Adrian Bunk's stuff to enable 2.4 kernel support then you
will want to compile it separately.

This is how you do that:
Change the /etc/apt/sources.list to include this line:
deb-src http://ftp.au.debian.org/pub/debian testing main contrib non-free
Then do the following:
apt-get update
apt-get install debhelper
apt-get source --build hotplug
dpkg -i hotplug_0.0.20010228-3_all.deb

You will also need usbutils from testing so do this too:
apt-get source --build usbutils

This will create a file called /sbin/hotplug which does the same stuff as
usbmgr did for the 2.2 kernels.

Alternatively if you are already running a testing / Woody system then
just do:
apt-get install hotplug

Cheers.

OT: unterminated character constant during a compile??

2001-04-28 Thread Kenward Vaughan
I apologize for the OT but as I mentioned in another post, I don't know any
other source of good help (I'm open to recommendations...).

I have tried to compile an app forming part of a molecular docking package
(not the same program forming the subject of that other post, but another in
the package) and have encountered an error about an unterminated character
constant. It appears to reference a file at line 161, but that is merely a
comment line. I'm hoping someone can help shed light on what is happening,
and whether I can recover from the problem. I'd really appreciate any
input.

This particular program is Gnu copyrighted, if someone wants to see the
whole thing. The Makefile and compile messages are below.

Many thanks in advance,

Help: Partition OK but packages all screwed up

2001-04-28 Thread Tim Wood
Hi,
I posted a message about my Partition Screw-up. Thanks to those who
replied.

I have the system booting off floppy. I worked out that I needd to
recreate
/lib/modules/2.2.17 and copy files/directories from
/lib/modules.old/2.2.17 which
fixed the modprobe problem and gives me back my LAN.

For newcomers:-

Computer Gateway 5150 Notebool PII-233 64Mb RAM 4.3 GB HDD dual boot
WinNT/Linux.

I expanded the partition but failed to realise that LILO uses an
absolute position for the boot
sector and so it would not boot.
At that point panic set in. I decided that I must have screwed up the
kernel image and so did a base
install from the 2.2r0 CD.

With help from a number of people I have it so it boots and loads
modules. On completion
of the boot it presents a copy of the Debian System Configuration
screens - the md5 password one!
If I follow the prompts through 4 screens there is brief flash of
text loading /usr/share/keymaps/i386/qwerty/us/kmaps.gz - as best I
can read it.
So how doI fix that?
I can log in on tty2, only as root and without a password.

I have 1230196 blocks used but dpkg only shows 79 of 296 packages
installed.
startx comes up with a message that libXmu.so.6 is missing and a
find doesn't find it.
All the X packages are there in /var/cache/apt/archives.

Prior to my breaking it the system was running Ximian1.4 Gnome
(just upgraded from Helix1.2) , ice-wm, with Netcape as my mail/news
reader.

If anyone know how to get apt/capt to recognise the existing packages
it would be a great help.

Well I guess I proved the old adage a little bit of knowledge is a
dangerous thing :)

Any suggestions on how to procede would be very welcome.

TIA,
Tim Wood

A typical PSU will be 250W, even if the hard drives take double power at

Probably it means that you are using open source nvidia driver from

own method for fast 3d. Also NvAgp is valid option only for binary

1 cable between them (no hub) (this is ok for only 2 computers, isn't it ?)

On the pc I did 'route add 10.0.0.3 dev eth1'.
I can ping 10.0.0.2 (eth1).
On the mac can ping 10.0.0.3.

But I can't ping each machine from the other one.

Is there a way to know if the ethernet cards are well recognized ?
Can it be the cable ?

Could it be that you have not mounted your d drive or cd-rom?
What is your output for

ls /proc/ide/
?

Here is mine:

You can run the command /sbin/ifconfig eth0
as well as for eth1. You should have two entries for each card in -
/etc/network/interfaces
There is a man page for interfaces. I'm assuming your sid box is a
firewall. You need to have Masquerading enabled. Take a look at the
HOWTOs and other docs at - http://www.linuxdoc.org/
That should give you a start.

Apache, CGI, and LXR troubles

2001-04-28 Thread Viktor Rosenfeld
Hello folks,

I recently asked about a source code cross reference programm and
decided to give LXR (http://lxr.linux.no/) a try. Well, it uses some
CGI scripts which are located in /usr/local/lxr/http. I have symlinked
this directory to /var/www/lxr, so it is in Apache's document tree. In
the INSTALL file, it says to stick the following code into the
/usr/local/lxr/http/.htaccess file, so Apache will execute the
CGI-scripts.

   Files ~ (search|source|ident|diff)$
   SetHandler cgi-script
   /Files

Unfortunately, when I point my web browser to
http://localhost/lxr/source, it will show the contents of the Perl
script. Likewise with search, ident, and diff. I don't know a lot
about apache (nothing more than to serve some PHP pages from within my
~/public_html directory), so I'm stuck.

Any help?

Thanks,
Viktor

DVD movie hardware requirements

2001-04-28 Thread Thomas Halahan

dear deb-user

i recently purchased a dvd player and tried to play a dvd movie using
videolan. whilst the dvd did play the results were juddery, which i
assume comes down to insufficient hardware to decode the dvd in real
time. during play my cpu and ram were flat out.

after reading the dvd howto i still didn't get a feel for what
hardware i would need to get perfect replay. if anyone knows the
minimum requirements (if this is definable) i would be very
interested.

currently i have 2.2.17, 4MB video card, 128MB RAM and 400MHz K6-2.

Packages to run kernel 2.4.x on potato (release 11)

2001-04-28 Thread Adrian Bunk

I have prepared the packages needed to run kernels up to 2.4.4 on a Debian
2.2r3 (potato) system. Please read [1] for more information.

The most important change in this release are the new kernel-* packages
(as always made by Herbert Xu) that include an important netfilter
security fix.

Changes since the last release:

  + added: chrony
  + added: hotplug
  + updated: iptables (1.2.1-1 - 1.2.1a-2)
  + updated: kernel-image-2.4.3-i386 (2.4.3-1 - 2.4.3-2)
The following packages were removed because they are not
really needed (there are other packages that you can use
instead):
   o kernel-headers-2.4.3-pentiumiii
   o kernel-headers-2.4.3-pentiumiii-smp
   o kernel-image-2.4.3-pentiumiii
   o kernel-image-2.4.3-pentiumiii-smp
  + updated: kernel-source-2.4.3 (2.4.3-3 - 2.4.3-4)
+ added a patch to umount in util-linux to prevent users from
umounting partitions root has mounted (when the user option
is set in /etc/fstab)
  + removed: usbmgr

try the Free flash plugin instead of the proprietary one.

I've copied the same plugin that worked with communicator so they work with

like to
try the free software one, especially with the couple of mac (a cube and a
powerbook g3) where i've installed debian (thanks to Ethan's docs)...

I think a search on freshmeat will do the trick =)

i do wish mozilla would look for plugins in
/usr/local/lib/mozilla/plugins so non-packaged plugins can be dropped
there, All your /usr/lib are belong to dpkg afterall... this works for
netscape i have the same plugin installed for netscape at
 /usr/local/lib/netscape/plugins. (using debian netscape packages).

Even if this is not the best solution, communicator looks for plugins in the
~/.netscape dir, but until now i was not able to replicate the behaviour with
mozilla...

basically what is happening is the php code is being
 sent to your browser
instead of being executed by the server. you need to
 tell the server that
a component (in this case mod_php) needs to process
 the file first, hence
 the AddHandler...

Like the documentation said I added this to the apache
srm.conf.

AddHandler php3-script .php3

and now even the .php3 files dont work?

Any more ideas? Thanks

Actually I ran into a similar problem with an older
version of php4 I had installed after I upgraded
mysql.

Essentially the upgrade of mysql changed the library
used to connect to it, causing php to fail to load
on startup.

Check your apache logs and make sure that php isn't
generating an error (if it doesn't load, it can't
handle any php files!).

I have just spent several hours last night getting my new V3 card to work

1. compile kernel with agp, DRI support (I didnt build DRI module like
they suggested, I used DRI that came with the kernel source), and your
chipset support.
In X, put in
Load glx
Load dri
into the Xconfig file. Verify that you are in fact using correct libs (in
my case, I had to remove my old glut3g and mesa3g libs and install
xlibmesa3 and xlibosmesa3. The best document you can read on this issue is
the DRi user guide on X's page (http://www.xfree86.org/4.0.3/DRI.html), it
explains how to vefiry you have everything setup.

1 ethernet card to local network (eth1 10.0.0.2)

 1 Powerbook running potato :
 1 ethernet onboard card (eth0 10.0.0.3)

1 cable between them (no hub) (this is ok for only 2 computers, isn't it ?)

Is this a 10-base 2 or 10-base T network?

If 10-base 2 (RG-58 coax) you need a BNC T connector and a 50 Ohm
terminator on each end.

If 10-base T you need a Cat-(3 or 5) 'Crossover' cable. A standard
cable that connects to a hub won't work when connected computer to
computer.

You could try xf86cfg, or xf86cfg -textmode if the grafic version is not
working...

With debian you could have XFree 4.x and XFree 3.3.x both installed (correct me

If you can't find anywhere the binary package for potato (i remember in

could try to build it yourself from source.

It's quite easy and if you look in the mail archive i think you will find well

The font output isn't too bad, but it looks REALLY nice under KDE 2.1.1 on

In reply to:bob hope

Quoting bob hope([EMAIL PROTECTED]):
I have apache and mysql installed and working.
PHP is installed but when I open a .php file through
the web browser it asks to save to disk. The file is
in the web dir and .php3 files work fine.

this is what i have in the apache conf files

 httpd.conf
  LoadModule php3_module /usr/lib/apache/1.3/libphp3.so

 mime.types
 application/x-httpd-php phtml pht php
 application/x-httpd-php3 php3 phtml
 application/x-httpd-php3-source phps
 application/x-httpd-php3-preprocessed php3p

 srm.conf
 AddType application/x-httpd-php3 .phtml .php
 AddType application/x-httpd-source.phps
 Addtype application/x-httpd-php .php

I seem to recall having the same problem when I installed PHP3.
While trying everything I could think of I added PHP to the Netscape
preferences/Naviagator/Applications

MIMEType:application/x-httpd-php
Suffixes: .phtml .pht .php .php3 .php4
Application: Netscape
and
MIMEType: application/x-httpd-php3-preprossed
Suffixes: .phtml .pht .php .php3 .php4
Application:Netscape

It's still there but I don't recall if that was the 'fix' or if all of
the other things I did fixed it.

Just a thought, hope it might help.

I checked and there is an error:

[warn] [client $foo] handler php3-script not found
for: /var/www/hello.php3

This only started after I added the bit in the
httpd.conf about AddHandler

Check your apache logs and make sure that php isn't
generating an error (if it doesn't load, it can't
 handle any php files!).

basically what is happening is the php code is
 being
  sent to your browser
instead of being executed by the server. you need
 to
  tell the server that
a component (in this case mod_php) needs to
 process
  the file first, hence
  the AddHandler...

Installation Problem

2001-04-28 Thread ShaniacSS
I am trying to install the current release of 2.2, and I get ext2fs panics at
the Installing The Base System point.

Hardware Info:
Iwill KK266R motherboard (not using the RAID)
K7 Thunderbird 1.333GHz
Kingmax PC150 SDRAM, 512M
IBM 18G ATA/66 HD, I could dig up the part number if it seems important

I tried the udma66 boot/root images, taking the base2_2.tgz from another
harddrive, and from a network download, and it hung when installing it. I then
turned off UDMA support on my motherboard, and used the vanilla boot/root
images, took the base2_2.tgz from both another harddrive, and from a network
download, and... it still hung while installing it.

Any suggestions? Other than moving the harddrive to another machine,
installing it there, and putting it in my new machine, which I've already
thought of. I'd prefer to get things working on this machine.

Help?

Re: DVD movie hardware requirements

2001-04-28 Thread Rolf Schillinger
Hi,
you could have chances to get dvds working ok if you use a different
software. I currently have PIII-450 w/256Mb and xine is ready to play dvds
just perfect since quite some time. My gfx card is a G400 with 32Mb video
ram tho. Anyway checkout xine.sourceforgge.net and
xine.cjb.net. Installation is quite painless and it works *very*
good. Important performance factors are the X version (X4 here) and Xv
too. Also using raw devices gives some performance gain. All that tuning
measures are provided on those websites and you can use the Wiki Wiki
Web on www.linuxvideo.org as well for some tuning tips. After applying
all these tuning steps my CPU is now at ~ 60% load while playing dvds
seamlessly.

how to downgrade libc6?

tried 'apt-get --reinstall install libc6' but it says that
it cannot download file. what gives?

Something I learned the hard way was that the mesa libraries (in xlibmesa3)

be linked to names for the old:

daddy:~# ls -l /usr/lib/libMesa*

They are backward compatible. My app is up and running again! Some of your

thank you for the quick response!

i did not install any packages that were compiled with the

packages that were required to satisfy dependencies.

how would i determine which packages got upgraded along with
libc6? would checking the description of the libc6 deb file
for dependencies do the trick? i believe there was at least
10 other packages i was forced to upgrade.
