If a newer upstream exists and you wish it packaged for Debian then file a wishlist bug against the package. But don't just say because there is a newer one available. Newer might also mean broken. In which case an older version may be better, especially when trying to get the next Stable Squeeze release accomplished. Simply inserting the most recent without regard to release status can be destabilizing and that is bad for Stable. It is better for Stable to release with the best version available rather than the newest version available. So... Feel free to file a wishlist bug. But please do include at least one reason for wanting the newer version. Say you want it because it does X differently than the Y in Stable. What does the svnmerge tool in the latest upstream do that the current version in Debian does not do? Do you mean stable/lenny/5.0 ? No new versions are included in a stable release (that's why it's called stable). Try backports.org or wait for the next release. Actually I meant any of the versions. I'm on testing/squeeze currently which has a newer version than lenny (testing and sid has the same subversion-tools package). Looking closer, it seems subversion-tools is taken from the subversion 1.6.x branch, and that branch hasn't been updated since early 2009. The upstream subversion home page lists 1.6.12 as the most recently released version. Released on 2010-06-21. That seems pretty recent to me! http://subversion.apache.org/ Subversion developers recommend using 1.6.12. http://subversion.apache.org/source-code.html This appears in Debian. The versions in Debian can be seen on the package tracking page. http://packages.qa.debian.org/s/subversion.html If you wish the latest version on Lenny then it is available in the Lenny backports repository. Thanks for making me look closer! Now I guess I need to go upstream :( Why do you need to go upstream? Debian already has the latest available. Bob signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Progress: Using Debian Live rescue, was able to mount my volumes, reinstall the kernel, run update-initramfs and lilo. (Only thing lost was the debian.bmp which looked gosh-awful on my screen anyway--works without it.)Results, back to where I was: 2.6.34 Will Not Boot. The 2.6.34 was compiled with the newer PATA/SATA driver so will create sdb's rather than hdb's (I would have no objection going back to 2.6.32 and the hdb's if this be than answer but that did not either before on this system). In any event, all my volumes are intact and I can offload to a new disk if I so choose and restart from there but it would seem it should make no difference.
Debian Live Rocks!
Comes up automatically with a gorgeous (but empty) kde4 desktop using the nouveau driver for my nvidia and this rocks!I said to a friend of mine: Who needs disks? Use this and each user can plug in a USB disk on key and go to town :-)Knoppix (until version 5, at least), however is more accessable. Gives a more populate desktop and its own menu on how to do stuff like create a persistent nest. Until I solve my bootup problems, I would like to do the same thing with Debian Live. How might I do this (then I can populate the desktop and panel and keep the stuff for the next session)? Who knows, it I cannot solve my bootup problem, I might just follow my own suggestion!

Lenny on HP DL 380 G5 with P400 (SAS HBA) / CCISS vs. HPSA
Hi, I'm currently using HP DL 380G5 for various tasks: - Mail server - Database server - File server I sometimes find the performance of the disks to just be average. I don't know how much work it is to backport the driver to 2.6.32 but you might want to try to open a wishlist bug against linux-2.6 and ask for the inclusion of the driver. So you've at least two choices now for Lenny which should work without too much hassle: a) Grab the 2.6.35 source package from experimental and rebuild it on Lenny. b) Use make-kpkg to build your own Kernel image. Regarding the hardware I don't have experience with the G5 servers nor with the new driver but a working (and charged) BBWC could do some smaller wonders in the past. Bottleneck analysis is hard sometimes though and highly depends on the workload, disk setup (RAID? Which level?) and filesystems (noatime?). Please check what dpkg itself thinks about libperl, i.e. dpkg -l libperl\* | awk '/^[^D|+]/{print $1,$2,$3}' I have in the past experimented with mixing apt-get and aptitude; I never had any problems. There were (and maybe still are) some differences with respect to handling of automatic installs and the persistence of scheduled actions that one should be aware of, though. In recent years I have only used aptitude in interactive mode (ncurses interface), so I am hesitant to make any strong statements about aptitude's behavior in command-line mode, and even more hesitant about apt-get. My personal philosophy is that I try to keep all packages on my Sid systems up-to-date, because then I will only have normal Sid problems, which are shared by many people, so they will discovered and solved quickly. With a partially-outdated Sid system, there might be additional issues (unforeseen by the package managers, who assume their packages are installed on a current system), and you are more or less alone with them. --simulate --show-deps install libperl5.10=5.10.1-14 [ snip: Again, a nonsense proposal instead of simply upgrading all the perl packages. unmount issue with multiple users
Hi, I want to report what I think is a bug, or unwanted behavior. When one user is logged in with a Gnome seesion and insert a removable media, the media is automaticly mounted. If the user then logg out without unmount or remove the removable media, the removable media can't be unmount by any other user except root. This is a behavior that leads to much frustration when for example a famlily is sharing a PC. The data CD or DVD gets stuck until the first user comes along or if someone who knows the root password can help out. The removable should of course unmount if the user who mounted it not any longer is logged in. To which packet belongs this? Kdenlive uses ffmpeg for encoding/decoding, if I remember correctly, so having a recent version of ffmpeg can sometimes make a difference in the performance of Kdenlive. -Rob -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. VPN Linux client
Hi, How can I use Linux as the client to connect to the remote host through VPN? My next potential job line up requires me to use VPN. But due to their failed demo, I can't give you much more details than that their current client is windows based, they login to VPN first through web. On the remote end, it's all *nix based systems. That's about all the details that I can give. Anyone here have the same situation like this? How do you prepare you side? PS. Searching VPN on google, most hits are about building VPN, eg.
