/home/bd/1-10.jpg /home/bd/carte.ecw

me renvoie :

Input file size is 5000, 1
Output driver `ECW' not recognised.

Compiled by default says : No, needs ECW SDK

Argentina, decidí volver a Lenny.

 Hola a todos/as,

Re: subversion-tools/svnmerge update?

2010-08-29 Thread Bob Proulx
Jeppe Øland wrote:
It seems the svnmerge tool included in the subversion-tools package is

Whats the correct procedure to request an update?

If a newer upstream exists and you wish it packaged for Debian then
file a wishlist bug against the package. But don't just say because
there is a newer one available. Newer might also mean broken. In
which case an older version may be better, especially when trying to
get the next Stable Squeeze release accomplished. Simply inserting
the most recent without regard to release status can be destabilizing
and that is bad for Stable. It is better for Stable to release with
the best version available rather than the newest version available.

So... Feel free to file a wishlist bug. But please do include at
least one reason for wanting the newer version. Say you want it
because it does X differently than the Y in Stable.

What does the svnmerge tool in the latest upstream do that the current
version in Debian does not do?

Do you mean stable/lenny/5.0 ? No new versions are included in a stable
release (that's why it's called stable). Try backports.org or wait for
  the next release.

Actually I meant any of the versions.
I'm on testing/squeeze currently which has a newer version than lenny
(testing and sid has the same subversion-tools package).

Looking closer, it seems subversion-tools is taken from the subversion
1.6.x branch, and that branch hasn't been updated since early 2009.

The upstream subversion home page lists 1.6.12 as the most recently
released version. Released on 2010-06-21. That seems pretty recent
to me!

  http://subversion.apache.org/

Subversion developers recommend using 1.6.12.

  http://subversion.apache.org/source-code.html

This appears in Debian. The versions in Debian can be seen on the
package tracking page.

  http://packages.qa.debian.org/s/subversion.html

If you wish the latest version on Lenny then it is available in the
Lenny backports repository.

Thanks for making me look closer!
Now I guess I need to go upstream :(

Why do you need to go upstream? Debian already has the latest
available.

Good!

When I try to use the Add/Remove Applications it chugs for a while,

you are using a GUI wrapper around apt. Because it is a wrapper there
may be errors that you are not seeing. Let me recommend that you run
apt from the command line so that you can see any errors that are
being produced.

then, after I enter the password, it opens. Then it says the list of
apps is out of date, asks if it can be updated, grays out and it hangs
and I can't kill it without logging out and back in.

What are the contents of your /etc/apt/sources.list file?

  $ cat /etc/apt/sources.list

I worry that you may have something incorrect there.

If not then run an update from the command line and report what it
says. Hopefully it will work with no errors. But if not it should
tell you why it is failing.

  # apt-get update

If that works then you can upgrade.

  # apt-get upgrade

And while it's hanging, I can't use Synaptic Package Manager or the
 root terminal.

Your phrase or the root terminal confuses me.

Lenny on HP DL 380 G5 with P400 (SAS HBA) / CCISS vs. HPSA

2010-08-29 Thread Laurent CARON

Hi,

I'm currently using HP DL 380G5 for various tasks:
- Mail server
- Database server
- File server

I sometimes find the performance of the disks to just be average.

A new driver (HPSA) is making its way into the kernel for more than a
year now (intended to replace the CCISS driver).

Do you guys have any input on replacing CCISS by HSPA ?

Did you get any performance gain ?

Thanks for the input.

Hm, seems that it entered mainline post 2.6.32 (early December 2009 ...) so
unfortunately it's not in the bpo Kernel and currently won't be part of
Squeeze.
I don't know how much work it is to backport the driver to 2.6.32 but
you might want to try to open a wishlist bug against linux-2.6 and
ask for the inclusion of the driver.

So you've at least two choices now for Lenny which should work without too
much hassle:
a) Grab the 2.6.35 source package from experimental and rebuild it on
Lenny.
b) Use make-kpkg to build your own Kernel image.

Regarding the hardware I don't have experience with the G5 servers nor with
the new driver but a working (and charged) BBWC could do some smaller wonders
in the past. Bottleneck analysis is hard sometimes though and highly depends
on the workload, disk setup (RAID? Which level?) and filesystems (noatime?).

help needed with gdal (Geospatial Data Abstraction Library)

2010-08-29 Thread Bernard

Hi to Everyone !

I only have very basic knowledge on this subject, but I need to convert
satellite image files (from Google Maps for instance) to the ECW format,
so that I can use them with a special program that I have just installed
into my GPS navigator.

I have installed the ''gdal-bin' package (which also installs
libgdal1-1.5.0).

But, if I type, for instance :

b...@new-host:~$ gdal_translate -of ECW -co TARGET=95 -co DATUM=WGS84
-co PROJ=GEODETIC -a_ullr 19.161272 45.635686 19.374475 45.335836
/home/bd/1-10.jpg /home/bd/carte.ecw

I get :

Input file size is 5000, 1
Output driver `ECW' not recognised.

The following format drivers are configured and support output:
 VRT: Virtual Raster
 GTiff: GeoTIFF
 NITF: National Imagery Transmission Format

A quick Google search taught me that the ECW format is being supported,
but the column titled Compiled by default says : No, needs ECW SDK

So, I don't know what to do next, since I did not find any appropriate
package in the Debian repositories to which I have access.

Thanks in advance for your help

Since I've installed esound, no more sound from music, videos, etc., but I can now hear system's sounds!

2010-08-29 Thread Merciadri Luca
Hi,

Some days ago, I figured out (thanks to the ML) how to hear systems'
sounds. I had to install esound, and I was using OSS. Now, System
Preferences Sounds Sounds tab plays correctly the sounds, but I
can't hear any other type of sound (i.e. from music played with totem,
VLC, videos on Youtube, etc.). The `Devices' tab gives, for, `Default
Mixer Tracks,' `ALSA' as a default. I changed it to OSS, and still no
sound from videos (even after GNOME session restart).

Should I deinstall esound? What can I do to hear music again? I checked
the volume control panel, and everything is okay (no `mute', etc., and
volumes are sufficiently high).

Thanks all.

Aptitude cannot upgrade libperl5.10

All of this is explained on the web page to which I referred you
earlier: http://www.wowway.com/~zlinuxman/tp600.htm
It has to do with software sound mixing. If you follow the steps
there, you should be able to get system sounds and regular
alsa sounds working. The fact that you are using OSS is a complication,
but there are drivers that will redirect the OSS interface to the
alsa interface and allow it all to work. The web page is valid.
I just tried it again a few minutes ago. Find a way to get to it
if you can.

I would say that is not necessary; the overall topic of this thread is
package management, so we stay within its scope and just start a more
specific sub-thread. It is good that you changed the subject, to make it
more likely to attract Daniel Burrows (the author of aptitude, who does
seem to read this list).

Ops, just realize that aptitude thinks my libperl5.10 is not installed,

up. Could it be that I mix apt-get install and aptitude install, or
something else? (I don't do install/upgrade very often, as you can see.)

Indeed, there seems to be a problem with aptitude's databases. Please
check what dpkg itself thinks about libperl, i.e.

  dpkg -l libperl\* | awk '/^[^D|+]/{print $1,$2,$3}'

I have in the past experimented with mixing apt-get and aptitude; I
never had any problems. There were (and maybe still are) some
differences with respect to handling of automatic installs and the
persistence of scheduled actions that one should be aware of, though.

In recent years I have only used aptitude in interactive mode (ncurses
interface), so I am hesitant to make any strong statements about
aptitude's behavior in command-line mode, and even more hesitant about
apt-get.

My personal philosophy is that I try to keep all packages on my Sid
systems up-to-date, because then I will only have normal Sid problems,
which are shared by many people, so they will discovered and solved
quickly. With a partially-outdated Sid system, there might be additional
issues (unforeseen by the package managers, who assume their packages
are installed on a current system), and you are more or less alone with
them.

--simulate --show-deps install libperl5.10=5.10.1-14

[ snip: Again, a nonsense proposal instead of simply upgrading all the
perl packages. This is not surprising, we have to figure out why
aptitude does not see libperl5.10 as installed. ]

unmount issue with multiple users

2010-08-29 Thread Patrik Wallander
Hi,
I want to report what I think is a bug, or unwanted behavior.
When one user is logged in with a Gnome seesion and insert a removable
media, the media is automaticly mounted.
If the user then logg out without unmount or remove the removable media,
the removable media can't be unmount by any other user except root.

This is a behavior that leads to much frustration when for example a
famlily is sharing a PC. The data CD or DVD gets stuck until the first
user comes along or if someone who knows the root password can help out.

The removable should of course unmount if the user who mounted it not
any longer is logged in.

To which packet belongs this?

Best regards,
Patrik Wallander

 Hi everyone,

If this sounds like I want to send spam, then you're right :)

This is about reporting list spam according to
 http://wiki.debian.org/Teams/ListMaster/ListArchiveSpam#MethodstoNominateSpamfortheReview-Process

Currently I'm using Gmail as relayhost, but they also filter outgoing
mail (not a bad thing per se) and I have reported so many that nothing
 is getting through anymore.

Beside from setting up my own mail server (not the first thing on my
TODO list) do you know of any free mail service that doesn't filter
outgoing mail? My ISP is using Google Apps, so this is not an option.

I already have an account with GMX, but with Gmail it took about a month
for the filters to kick in, so I'd rather set up something that I know
 will work.

I *think* www.dyndns.com has something like this. I haven't looked at
it in a while, so I might be wrong.

If the OP would use option #1 or #2 at the link above, instead of using
#3, he'd have no problem--except having to log into the archive, find
the message, and then hit the report as spam button, or run a perl
script in his MUA, which may not support running such a perl script.

Which is the lesser of all the evils? #1 seems like a no-brainer, the
least effort/PITA factor involved.

Indeed, there seems to be a problem with aptitude's databases. Please

So both dpkg and apt-get think libperl is installed, except aptitude.

Is there any way for me to rebuild my aptitude's databases?

I think it's also fairly straightforward to install ffmpeg from testing.
Kdenlive uses ffmpeg for encoding/decoding, if I remember correctly, so
having a recent version of ffmpeg can sometimes make a difference in the

VPN Linux client

2010-08-29 Thread T o n g

How can I use Linux as the client to connect to the remote host through
VPN?

My next potential job line up requires me to use VPN. But due to their
failed demo, I can't give you much more details than that their current
client is windows based, they login to VPN first through web. On the
remote end, it's all *nix based systems. That's about all the details

Anyone here have the same situation like this? How do you prepare you

PS. Searching VPN on google, most hits are about building VPN, eg.

Until you know what VPN technology they're using, you're dead in the
