It seems to me they do not honour the "delete" request when collecting
from IMAP because in my case they certainly go from INBOX but are
retained in ALL MAIL.

I've found that switching fetchmail from pop3 access to imap access,
restores that delete function. However that may be server dependent, my

Could you do me a favour and logon to the gmail web interface and see if
your mails are still in "ALL MAIL", perhaps it is just me ?

Hi, Rosika! Welcome to the community. I hope you will enjoy your time here.

Yes, Debian Stable is very stable. It is not perfect, but then no OS is. The
best endorsement that I can give any Linux distribution is that it is stable
and well maintained. Debian is certainly that.

Debian Stable gets regular updates from the Debian Security Team, a group that
does not nearly get the credit it deserves. You can use Debian Stable with a
reasonable assurance that you will receive patches as needed.

If you need newer versions of software for some reason or another, you can
always use Debian Backports. You can also use Snap, Flatpak, and AppImage
archives. Please be aware that Debian does not patch third party packaging. So
use them at your own risk. If you have skills as a coder, you can create your
own packages from any of the Debian source trees.

So the arguments against Debian being outdated are pretty much moot and
misinformed, in my opinion.

Take care, and once again, welcome!
T.J.

Do reference the codename for the release: that way, you don't get a nasty
surprise. If your system says "stable" today, that's Debian 10.10. When
Debian 11 comes along - soon now - you get a huge update all at once, and
things are likely to be unpredictable if you are a new Debian user.

If you say buster, then when buster slides to become oldstable, your
system won't change underneath you suddenly.

Debian stable is tested over a couple of years before release and gets
security support. It's not the latest and greatest, major changes every six
months, supported for nine months.

_Today_ - 25th June 2021 - because we're anticipating a stable release in ~6
weeks - I might suggest installing that release when it comes out. If you don't
and install
Debian 10.10 - Buster - today, then Debian 11 [Bullseye] will come along at
the end of July if the release goes to plan.

Everything you need is already in the Debian installer: use an expert
instaLL and text mode to install it. Do not select Debian desktop environment:
select only Mate - job done. Use what's already there: you may hve noted that
I often give the advice on -user for a minimal install to start out with a
text mode expert install and sort out _exactly_ what you want.

Start with a text mode only - command line environment - then add
mate-desktop-environment. Optionally, you can configure apt to ignore
recommends.

This isn't generally recommended: an upgrade may bring about bigger
changes that you don't want to "just happen" without being prepared.

My laptop (with an EFI firmware) has a dual boot with Debian Bullseye
and Windows 10. In this Windows 10 case, it is an EFI chainloading
(that would not be the case (chainloading) with another OS without its
self bootloader installed and properly configured)

My /boot/grub.grub.cfg contains:
"[...]
### BEGIN /etc/grub.d/30_os-prober ###
menuentry 'Windows Boot Manager (on /dev/nvme0n1p3)' --class windows --
class os $menuentry_id_option 'osprober-efi-FAF2-88F6' {

fi
chainloader /EFI/Microsoft/Boot/bootmgfw.efi
}
### END /etc/grub.d/30_os-prober ###
[...]"

I edit /etc/default/grub to add this line:
GRUB_OS_PROBER_SKIP_LIST='FAF2-88F6@/EFI/Microsoft/Boot/bootmgfw.efi'

then I update the config:
didier@hp-notebook14:~$ sudo update-grub
Generating grub configuration file ...
Found background image: /usr/share/images/desktop-base/desktop-grub.png
Found linux image: /boot/vmlinuz-5.10.0-7-amd64
Found initrd image: /boot/initrd.img-5.10.0-7-amd64
Skipped Windows Boot Manager on
/dev/nvme0n1p3@/EFI/Microsoft/Boot/bootmgfw.efi by user request.
Adding boot menu entry for EFI firmware configuration
done

So the Windows 10 entry has been skipped

It is confirmed by inspecting /boot/grub/grub.cfg:
"[...]
### BEGIN /etc/grub.d/30_os-prober ###
### END /etc/grub.d/30_os-prober ###
[...]"

Cheers :-)

lsmod.

STRONG disagree!

You don't want that, because it means that at some point in the near
future, you'll get a shocking surprise as your system half-updates
itself, and probably pukes partway through.

A release upgrade should be planned and executed according to the release
notes, by hand. Never by automated tools, and never at a time outside
of your direct control.

You may want to change all instances of 'buster' to 'stable', so that you don't
have to bother changing it whenever new version of debian is released as stable.
This is, if you really want to track 'stable', i.e., automatically switch to
the new stable release when it becomes such.

No one's denying that Gmail *mostly* follows email standards; the
criticism is that they sometimes deviate from these standards, in
undocumented and often frustrating ways. This may not affect your
use case; that does not mean that it isn't frustrating to others.

clients I use have special workarounds and warnings for Gmail:

Re: 2 monitores + notebook

2021-06-25 Thread Yuri Musachio
Boa tarde pessoal!

Leonardo, então so pra confirmar...

Fala Leandro, boa tarde!

Re: Debian stable - updates

Hi Greg,

thank you very much for your help. It's highly appreciated.

It's so good to have have some confirmation by such knowledgeable people
like you.

So for now I think I won't have to change anything as I'm currently
running Debian stable in a virtual machine.
Yet when setting it  up as a daily driver (as a main system) I'd
consider applying the changes especially in view of microcode.

I'm really glad to have learnt something new (to me at least) again.

Thanks a lot for your help.

Many greetings and keep safe.

You probably want them all to be the same, yes. It would be a highly
unusual case where you'd want contrib or non-free only in *one* of
your three repositories, or only in binary packages and not source
packages, or vice versa.

I see. So in case I want it I'd have to add "contrib" and "non-free" in

Perhaps I'm a bit slow to understand, but what about lines 8, 11, 14 and
15 then? All these also contain just "main". Would they have to be
altered as well?

Thanks a lot.

It's not necessary at this time.

You only need to add contrib and non-free to the security line if you've
also added it to the primary repository line (line 7 in your file).

You're only using "main" right now, so you only need security updates
for main.

If at any time in the future you add contrib and/or non-free to your
primary repository (e.g. to install firmware or microcode), then you'll
want to add it to the security repository as well, so that you pick up
the security patches for those.

Re: Debian stable - updates

2021-06-25 Thread Christian

Hi again,

so sorry to bother you kind people once more. It turns out I've got an
additional question regarding  updates.

On https://www.debian.org/security/#keeping-secure under "Keeping your
Debian system secure" it says:

"You can use apt to easily get the latest security updates. This
requires a line such as deb http://security.debian.org/debian-security
buster/updates main contrib non-free
in your /etc/apt/sources.list file. Then execute apt-get update &&
apt-get upgrade"

I looked up  the respective file on my system and it looks like this:

1     #
2
3     # deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux 10.9.0 _Buster_ - Official amd64
xfce-CD Binary-1 20210327-10:42]/ buster main

4
5     #deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux 10.9.0 _Buster_ - Official amd64
xfce-CD Binary-1 20210327-10:42]/ buster main

6
7     deb http://deb.debian.org/debian/ buster main
8     deb-src http://deb.debian.org/debian/ buster main
9
10   deb http://security.debian.org/debian-security buster/updates main
11   deb-src http://security.debian.org/debian-security buster/updates main
12
13   # buster-updates, previously known as 'volatile'
14   deb http://deb.debian.org/debian/ buster-updates main
15   deb-src http://deb.debian.org/debian/ buster-updates main
16
17   # This system was installed using small removable media
18   # (e.g. netinst, live or single CD). The matching "deb cdrom"
19   # entries were disabled at the end of the installation process.
20  # For information about how to configure apt package sources,
21  # see the sources.list(5) manual.

From the advice given at the debian page (see above) I gather I have to
change the contents of line 10, right? As there's just "main" in it
right now I'd have to add "contrib" and "non-free" I think.

But what about line 11? Would I have to do the same there as well?

Thanks a lot in advance for your help.
Many greetings.
Rosika

¿La imagen es de 32 o 64 bits?
¿Funciona la versión LiveCD?

Algunas ideas:

I see no reason to expect that it would be temporary.

The change apparently happened in version 5.8.3-1~exp1.
/usr/share/doc/linux-image--5.10.0-7-amd64/changelog.gz contains the
following entry under that version:

  * Move System.map into debug package and replace with pointer.

> If the former, then what's the reasoning behind that change?

Well, what is System.map used for?

My understanding is that it's primarily useful when trying to debug the
kernel.

As such, it only really makes sense to have it present (and taking up
space) when that's what you're trying to do - at which point you'll also
presumably want to have the other files that are present in the
debugging-symbols package for the Linux kernel version in question.

If that doesn't address your question, can you please clarify what
you're wanting to know and why? E.g., knowing what your expectations are
here might be helpful.

This is basically just noise, but, ooohhh, that sounds NICE and
HANDY. I'm wondering how many other tricks like that exist that never
see the light of day. In a perfect World, maybe someone with deep
knowledge of those features could approach Debian-Publicity about

in their newsletters and updates?

Speaking as someone with cognitive issues such that I operate as a
perennial newbie, it would surely help if someone could point GRUB
Users to what that "" is referencing.

For now, it just sounds like part of the fancier loading needs that
are occasionally discussed here on Debian-User. My thought process is
that maybe hearing it further described will trigger a fellow lurker's
interest in learning more about how their Debian works right from the
boot beginning.

Entras a https://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v5.12.13/ y te

by default also install packages that are recommended by those packages.
Recommended packages are not strictly required for the core functionality > of
the selected software, but they do enhance that software and should,
in the view of the package maintainers, normally be installed together with
that software.

I like the MATE Desktop. If the package mate-desktop-environment is in

I believe changing one screen of the standard would give me what I want

Great! That is the most important aspect for me.
I really don't need the latest-and-greatest version of packages. All I
do need is a stable and secure system.

So Debian stable turns out to be ideally suited for my purposes.

I've installed it in a VM for now (qemu, KVM) to see how it performs. I
must say I'm very impressed. It runs smoothly even with just 1 GB RAM
allocated to it.

I'm sure it'll make a fine system as a production system.

Thanks again and keep safe.

Many greetings.

The fact that Debian stable is rock solid is a great asset in itself. So

Thank you for clarifying the matter for me.

Cordialement

He is of course free to have this opinion :-)

Thing is: "stable" means that Debian stable doesn't (usually) change
the versions of installed software. Not without a strong reason. Only
bug fixes and security patches go in.

That means that you can usually update your operating system with closed
eyes, without fears that anything will stop working of a sudden.

Some people like that, even on their desktops ;-)

If you need the-latest-and-greatest of "this specific package" there
are usually ways around.

I, for example, have a very reduced set of packages I self-compile. I
know I've to deal with the fall-out, and I know how to. But I couldn't
possibly do that for the 2000+ packages installed in my system. I'm
infinitely thankful to the maintainers doing that job, and for them to
not make funny experiments.

Cheers

Debian stable - updates

2021-06-25 Thread Christian

Hi altogether,

as I´m a newcomer to Debian and coming from Lubuntu I searched for
information as far as the release model is concerned.

I learned that there are three different releases: stable, testing, and
unstable.

I know I´m not supposed to post any links here but for the sake of
reference I´ll still do it this time (sorry).
I´m referring to the article  "Debian vs Ubuntu" on
https://linuxconfig.org/debian-vs-ubuntu .

I quote:

"Debian's stable release is insanely stable. There are few distributions
in the same league when it comes to rock solid reliability.

[...] There is a tradeoff, though. The software in Debian Stable is
usually fairly outdated.
In fact, it's usually outdated when the distribution first ships. Now,
that's not much of a problem for servers, but it's awful for desktops. "

Despite reading through the entire article I couldn´t really understand
why the author refers to Debian stable as being "awful" for desktops.

So I have a question in order to be clear about the matter.

Is Debian stable safe to use - I mean in the sense that it gets security
updates for the installed packages?

I don´t really care about updates which would introduce new features of
programmes. All I´m concerned about is getting security updates so that
I can use Debian stable as my daily driver.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Many greetings
Rosika

Hi,

In general i'd buy any brand of full height drives.
I currently run 3 LGs, 2 ASUS, 1 Samsung, 1 Optiarc, 1 PIONEER.

It's more a matter of the individual drive than of the manufacturer or
model. Not so good during the last 5 years were:
- The flaky new DVD burner which i had to send back was a LITEON
iHAS124F. But i know of other iHASen which work well.
- An LG GH24NSC0 became unreliable after only two years.
The LITEON was planned as replacement. In the end the job went to a
  ASUS DRW-24D5MT.
(Both did cost about 15 EUR. So any testing at the factory would eat up
the manufacturer's profit.)

I always refrained from slim drives. User reports suggest that they are
a bit less reliable. But your mileage may vary ...

--
A little warning about PIONEER BDR-S09 might be appropriate:

Mine reads BD-RW with such a high (and not adjustable) speed and has such
a strong grip on the medium, that two newer "Verbatim" BD-RW media
developed a radial crack from the inner hole towards the writable area.
With one of the media the crack reached the writable area and made the
medium unreadable.
This happened during stress tests after about 10 times of reading. The
media bear the manufacturer id "CMCMAG/CN2/0". Older Verbatim BD-RW
(VERBAT/IM0/0) or those from "Intenso", "Primeon" and "Maxcell"
(all RITEK/BW1/1) did not suffer such a damage in 20 read runs at about
10x BD speed.
The drive itself survived the intensive testing without problems.

I addressed the PIONEER BDR-S09's unwillingness to read with slower speed
by special parameters of xorriso command -read_speed, which curb the drive
speed by simply not taking more data per second than the desired speed
would deliver. I.e. xorriso waits with new READ(10) commands until enough
time has eleapsed since the last one. This causes the drive to make less
noise and to let the "CMCMAG/CN2/0" media survive 20 read runs without
visible damage:

  xorriso -for_backup -indev /dev/sr1 \
  -read_speed soft_force:4xBD \
  -check_media --

(The Linux kernel offers no such curb mechanism, i fear.)

In general i only feed the PIONEER with the RITEKs of which i have enough.
I now refrain from buying new "Verbatim" BD-RW, although it might be that
their plastic body became more sturdy meanwhile.

Have a nice day :)

Thomas

looking through my collection of log files these timestamps range from
[ 25381890 ] to [ 29665146 ], with or without modesty_on_drive=... does
not seem to make much of a difference. Maybe the time it takes for the
drive to become ready after closing the tray can account for this 4
seconds.

It's an internal drive, so the power supply seems to me like an unlikely
candidate.

Thanks :-)
And maybe the firmware programmers of the next drive were less
creative :-)

If someone here can report about experience (good or bad) with specific
make and models (still not sure whether the next drive will be a DVD- or
BD-writer), it would be welcome...

Thanks again, and have a nice day :)

Physically removing the windows disk and "grub-mkconfig" and/or

you can still edit /boot/grub/grub.cfg

It's a bit more complex than the old grub but it's pretty obvious which bit it
which when you look at it.

Any changes will be overwritten by grub-mkconfig but I assume that is what you
want.

Looks like you really need a new drive.

Yes. That option causes frequent inquiry of the drive's buffer status.
At the time of above READ BUFFER CAPACITY command the free buffer capacity
was 0x041000 = 266240 bytes. That's about 77.5 percent fill of the
0x12 = 1,179,648 buffer bytes.

So the buffer really does not get filled completely. In the log which you
sent me, the error ocured after 28.8 seconds of libburn run time. At the
time of above command, libburn was running for 26.803073 seconds.
(What number is to see in the microsecond timestamp []-brackets of the
failed WRITE(10) command ? Is it around 28 million ?)

So it looks more like the actual burn start brings the drive firmware to
reporting its self-invented (or "vendor specific") error code.
I would next point to the power supply situation, if it was an external
drive which gets its power via the USB cable. In that case the theory
would be that the laser beam uses too much electricty so that the firmware
processor gets a hick-up.

But as it appears now, the drive is just mad and unreliable.
I'm crossing fingers that your next one will have a long and happy life.

Have a nice day :)
