It means _without_ serifs, which are (according to wikipedia) "small line or stroke regularly attached to the end of a larger stroke in a letter or symbol within a particular font or family of fonts." Which to me seems like pretty much only way to separate a small 'l' from a big 'i', To me, without the serifs, both those characters are simply a line from top to bottom. Sound volume doesn't stick between reboots
Hi! I have a problem where sound volume doesn't stick between reboots - I have an external USB sound "card", a Behringer UMC204HD, which is detected just fine by the alsa tools and everything, but, as said, it doesn't get volume stuck between reboots. I need to go into alsamixer in the terminal and select the Behringer and increase the volume there every time. I have done alsactl store, as mentioned on https://wiki.debian.org/SoundConfiguration (which as mentioned should be done automatically on every shutdown, but which it seems not to be done as I have described). In the mixer of Xfce's puvlseaudio plugin all volumes are properly set, and nothing needs to be done there. This is on a Bookworm system, just upgraded from Bullseye (where all this wasn't necessary), running Xfce. Mouse left button acts really strange
Hi! I have massive problems with my Logitech M705 - Or specifically with the left mouse button. Sometimes (very often) singleclick becomes double-click, dragging items is very hard, it drops the drag before I release the mouse button. Clicking on the terminal icon in my xfce panel often starts three terminals. The weird thing is that mouse movement and the mousewheel works just fine. No problems there of any kind. This is independent of which program I use - in Claws Mail, the Chromium browser, and also in virtualbox and Steam games. This is on an up to date Debian 11 Bullseye (just upgraded to the first point release), Xfce desktop, Nvidia graphicscard using the Nvidia drivers on Xorg. All packages up-to-date with Debian 11.1. On my latest boot of the system, it looked to me like the button acted normally for about one minute, but then the usual crap started happening again, so I assume that the mouse hardware is fine. (I have also tried another mouse - same behaviour). Mouse section in xorg.conf: Section "InputDevice" # generated from default Identifier "Mouse0" Driver "mouse" Option "Protocol" "auto" Option "Device" "/dev/input/mouse0" Option "Emulate3Buttons" "no" Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5" EndSection It was this earlier: Option "Device" "/dev/psaux" - but no difference, independent on which "Device" I use there. Debian svensk IRC-kanal
Hej!
Hi! I have managed to setup a personal repository for backports from unstable to stable only for personal usage. Everything works just fine, with one small exception: After I dput a package I must login to the repository server, and run a shell script containing the reprepro command, which I cannot automate, since it requests entry of a password for a gpg key. Does anyone have some simple instructions to setup reprepro so I don't have to enter this password by hand - I understand that I can use some kind of gpg certificate to get around this, but I haven't managed to set it up properly. I want to do the reprepro command in a crontab so that eventual uploaded packages get processed automatically every X minutes, but then it (of course) cannot require someone to fill in a gpg password. Is it useful to reply to a bug report saying that you can't reproduce it when another user with the same specs(package and debian version) already did that? Thats all for now. [1] - The neat list format I'm talking about is the one that appear on bug reports like this: Versions of packages liferea depends on: ii gconf-service 3.2.6-1 ii gconf2 3.2.6-1 ii libatk1.0-0 2.8.0-2 ii libc6 2.17-3 You can get such a list using aptitude: aptitude search '?reverse-depends(liferea)?architecture(amd64)' -F%p%V This will show reverse-depends of liferea on amd64 (If I skip the architecture it will list both i386 and amd64, more or less just doubling the list). xrandr, Nvidia and Xfce login
I have two screens, both 19, 1280x1024 resolution, and one of these is an (old) Dell screen with Pivot rotation possibilities. It works pretty good, my lightdm gets the screens properly, (thanks to a xrandr setup described below), but when logging into Xfce the screens blinks black, and after this the screens shows the same desktop setup as the Clone alternative in Nvidias TwinView does. Either using nvidia-settings, or the script described below, I can simply setup my screen again as I want them, but how can this be done without having to? - that is, make the Xfce log-in/startup not mess with the screen setup that is correct in lightdm? To be really clear about my setup, I have my screens like this: (Use a monospace font to view this...) -- || | ||| | ||| | ||| -- 1280x1024 1024x1280 And this is on a Nvidia 650Ti Boost card - I use the proprietary drivers from Nvidias homepage (319.23) on a Wheezy installation. (I don't believe the drivers packaged in Wheezy supports the card) I use lightdm as display manager, and in that I have setup so it runs a script to setup the screens using the display-setup-script in /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf: display-setup-script=/usr/share/rotate_pivot_90.sh rotate_pivot_90.sh simply looks like this: #!/bin/bash xrandr --output DVI-D-0 --mode 1280x1024 --rotate left --pos 1280x0 --output DVI-I-0 --mode 1280x1024 --pos 0x256 (DVI-D-0 is the right (pivot) screen, and DVI-I-0 is the left standard screen) What causes logging in to Xfce to reset the screen setup that is correct in lightdm? My goal is to not have to do anything, and get the described setup automatically on login (even after lightdm). On Wed, 1 May 2013 00:04:48 +0200, Jean-Marcjean-m...@6jf.be wrote: Hi everybody, I followed you discussions about MUAs and I have some questions about the same. Running a Debian Testing, I use Sylpheed (3.2.0) and Claws-mail (3.8.1), the second being a fork of the first one if I understand everything. They are difficult to disentangle but I have to say I prefer Sylpheed because it is whiter than Claws-mail (in french, being plus blanc means having a presentation more clear). My question: in Sylpheed, when you got a signed mail, you directly see if it is a good signature at the end of the mail. With Claws-mail, I do not find a way to check signatures. In Claws, with the PGP plugins loaded (PGP/Core, PGP/Inline, PGP/MIME) it will tell you about the status of the signature just below the message (with an icon and text). That is one of the items that I found better in Claws than Sylpheed - Yes, I am a Claws user - I used to use Sylpheed before, but moved over to Claws, because of the plugins. (Mainly the Fancy plugin for HTML rendering, but also those PGP ones). I am a Claws user, but there is some things that I find better in Sylpheed - The search system in Claws works just fine, but I find the one in Sylpheed easier for me. In Claws a search simply filters messages in your standard folder, and changes the icon for other folders if a search match is found in that folder, while Sylpheed gives a completely new dialog, with a list of the messages found. I would love to see such a search dialog in Claws too. Another thing that is funny to me (in Claws) is the filtering system - The filtering dialog has a system where you have to change items in a list, and then remember to update the filter-item in the list with the changes you have done. I would love to see both these items with simple OK/Cancel dialogs as they are in Sylpheed in Claws too instead of what they have now. Anyway, both these problems are easy to live with, and as long the plugins in Sylpheed are limited to what they are now I would recommends Claws - But now when Sylpheed has a plugin system starting, and starts getting proper plugins - it might be time to start thinking about switching back to Sylpheed again... -- Andreas Rönnquist mailingli...@gusnan.se gus...@gusnan.se -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Thunar, USB-sticks and big files
Hi guys! I have a problem copying big files to an USB-stick using thunar in Debian Stable. Doing the actual copying is mostly fine and no error is printed, but when unmounting the USB memory (I guess it is then the files are actually copied) - the device pretty much always times out, giving an error message, and the copied files are not readable. I do this to copy ripped DVD's to USB memory for viewing in a TV with USB connection - the result is that if the files are copied using Thunar, it fails, the files are not readable by the TV, but if copying using terminal and a simple cp, it works just fine. Has anybody seen similar results - is there anything to be done to solve it? (No need to CC the replies to me, I read the list) But I am not nowhere near using 4GB... Re: Thunar, USB-sticks and big files
Try 'sync' after the write is supposedly complete; see what happens when the system actually tries to write to the device. Open a shell and 'tail -f /var/log/messages' to see if anything is griping about the device during writes. Hmmm. You *are* waiting for the cached data to be flushed to the drive before unplugging it, right? hmm, I now I have tried several different USB-sticks, and I still have the problem (It perhaps isn't quite as serious as I believed though)... If having copied a big file, unmounting through Thunar pretty much always results in the following error message: Failed unmounting 'Devicename' Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken. - after a short while (way before the actual writing is done) - But, if I keep waiting for some time _after_ this, the data is still written to the device as it should. However, it doesn't give any clue whatsoever to when it actually is finished writing the files to the device, so it is easy to (by mistake) physically take the USB-stick before the data is actually written. However, I do have one USB-stick, that actually lights up a LED during copying, making it pretty easy to spot when it is safe to remove it and not, but I kind of wish that that sort of feature wouldn't be necessary to safely use an USB-stick... If I don't copy any files, or just copy small files, I get that standard It's now safe to remove the device when unmounting - This is what I expect in the scenario with bigger files described above too after copying is done, but no... -- Andreas Rönnquist mailingli...@gusnan.se gus...@gusnan.se signature.asc Description: PGP signature

Re: apt / aptitude question
Hello, Mandriva refugee here. :-) New to Debian, but have been using some form of *NIX since 1986. - 8 - It will spit back a list of all packages that provide that filename or any part of it. It's treated like a substring - for example if I type urpmf kross it will list the package that provides /usr/bin/kross, and will then go on to show other packages that have that string in it like /usr/lib64/libkokross.so.7 and so on. This can be controlled by entering something like urpmf /usr/bin/kcross, though other things in /usr/bin that start with kcross will also show up. I haven't figured or found out yet how to get that kind of search functionality within Debian. So as above, is there a way to do this, and if so, how? And in addition to Neals answer, there is also apt-file that can be used like this: apt-file search something apt-file list package - before doing apt-file search, you should run apt-file update. Solving a GTK theme problem
Hi! Every time I start a GTK-program in the terminal which uses icons, I get this: (program:line): Gtk-WARNING **: Error parsing gtk-icon-sizes string: '16' (with program:line different for each program, of course) - I have searched my used themes and have a very hard time finding where the actual problem is. Looking at the line of a perl program which gives the problem gives me the line $dialog-run; and the C programs which I have tried debugging seems to do on the gtk_main function. Is there a simple way to find where this faulty gtk-icon-sizes is located? Anybody have any clues for solving this? Also, I would try to run the app from another user. Thank you Camaleón, I've got it solved! The problem didn't affect the looks of any application (using icons or not), the only effect of it was the output to the terminal. Your hint to try running as another user made me find that it was for my main user only, and I could simply limit my searches to my home folder - Having already searched through .gtkrc-2.0, my .themes and similar places for GtkIconSizes and gtk-icon-sizes I now found ~/.config/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-perchannel-xml/xsettings.xml which contained amongst other things property name=Gtk type=empty ... property name=IconSizes type=string value=16/ ... /property - removing the line containing the IconSizes property name removed the ugly output in the terminal. XChat links to the Debian BTS
Hi everybody. Using XChat, is there a way to interpret #nn as a link to http://bugs.debian.org/nn? As it is now, #nn is interpreted as an IRC channel (Which pretty much always is wrong if n is a number), and gives me the option to join it - not quite what I want. I guess this would involve some scripting, but not having done any scripting for XChat I dont really know where to start. In the option menus I do find Auto replace, but that seems to only involve what I write in my messages and replaces stuff in my message before it gets to the channel.
