Dell's hardware is unreliable. They work fine initially.
But after 1 year or so, things start to fall apart. This is if you plan to
use laptop intensively (say 8-10 hours a day). But if you just use it for

You can try Ubuntu. But so far my experience with users who shifted from
Debian to Ubuntu tells me that they will eventually come back to Debian
after a year or so. May be Debian is some kind of black hole with infinite
attracting power :-) LOL!

Yes, I think maxima should just depend on gnuplot-x11 (unless upstream has

What version of konsole? Are all packages related to KDE up to date on your
system? Do you have any errors/warnings when start X from console using the

I hibernate my desktops pretty frequently. When hibernating a machine, a
snapshot of the RAM is written on to the swap partition. That is why I
follow at least as much as RAM rule.

You might also need another command such as
apt-get build-dep package_name
this will automatically install all the dependencies necessary for compiling
the package_name.

You will not find any real IDEs in Linux. However, vim/gvim can do what
you describe. Emacs (another powerful editor) is also capable of doing what
you describe.
