Woody Lilo problem

2001-01-22 Thread Gernot Bauer
Hi,

I just updated my debian woody (testing) installation with dselect and
when it tries to install the new lilo-version, I get the following
errors:
 Configuring packages ... /var/lib/debconf//config.1295:
/usr/sbin/lilo_find_mbr: No such file or directory
lilo failed to configure, with exit code 127
Use of uninitialized value at /var/lib/debconf//config.1295 line 64, STDIN
 chunk 3.
Use of uninitialized value at /var/lib/debconf//config.1295 line 94, STDIN
 chunk 7.

Is that a known problem or could it be that I have an SCSI-system? Is
there any way of preventing lilo from being installed (I start with a
boot-floppy - I know that is lame...).

Thanx, Gery

Re: Slink/Kernel Upgrade

Does upgrading to slink merely involve installing the packages from the

Im using slink with 2.0.34 and 2.0.36 - both work very well (installed

I figured out my problem with the X-installation: apt had stable
instead of slink in its config file - I only updated part of the

Seems to work now (at least I can see the xterm, etc. -packages now). I
just wonder why apt segfaults when used in command-line (dselect-apt
works fine).

Debian KDE philosophy

1998-10-09 Thread Gernot Bauer
As I read in some postings (slashdot.org and several other mailing
lists) debian is planning not to distribute KDE (and qt) anymore.

Could anyone tell me the reason why kde should not be distributed via
the non-free-tree (ftp)... Netscape is available as well (and this is
software what I call NONFREE in terms of GPL). What about a
kde-installer.deb-package?

What annoyes (sp?) me is that people say Linux needs a nice workspace
- and for me, kde is one - and then say, well, kde is nice, but not
free and therefore we dont want to distribute it. I dont want to start
a flamewar here, maybe somebody could explain technical or legal-reasons
to me.

Thank you, Gernot

P.S.: I dont know if this is the right place to ask - if not, maybe we
could solve this via email and not via the debian-user-list. And, sorry

Problems with Debian2.0: Perl, Xincludes, ...

1998-06-08 Thread Wolfgang Gernot Bauer
Hi, Im having some problems with my Debian2.0 installation (upgrade from
Deb1.3). First, perl has a bug. aclocal does not work because it looks
for perl in /bin/perl and not in /usr/bin/perl where it is installed
(bug submitted).

When I try to compile KDE I get the following error-messages when using
configure:
checking how to run the C++ preprocessor... g++ -E
checking for X... configure: error: Can't find X includes. Please check your
installation and add the correct paths!

My debian1.3-system worked very well (and yes, I could compile KDE) but
it seems that the pre-2.0-version has more problems than I expected.

if you are referring to the HOWTO, then you can get it from my autoup
 site.

 http://debian.vicnet.net.au/autoup/
 or
 http://taz.net.au/autoup/
Yup. I meant the HOWTO...

i don't know if Scott has updated this HOWTO lately or not...but there
is a link to his site in the howto.

in any case, you probably want to run the autoup.sh script rather than
follow the HOWTO. autoup.sh does everything that's in the howto and more
(and has been kept up to date).
There is one problem with the autoup.sh when using
ftp-installation-method.

I used ftp.debian.org as mirror and the slang-lib was not found (and not
downloaded).
It worked after downloading the slang-package from
/pub/debian/hamm/binaries-i386/base and putting it into the
/tmp/libs-directory.

Thanx again, Gernot

Re: Problem with ppp-2.3.3-5 and authentication

1998-05-05 Thread Wolfgang Gernot Bauer
Subject:

I've only just joined this list, so I don't know if this has been
discussed before. I'm using ppp-2.3.3-5 and mgetty-1.1.14-1 to run a
one-modem dialup. Everything works just fine until pppd goes to verify
the username/password, which always fails with PAP authentication
failure for username. I've verified the username/password and they're
valid. Can someone give me some pointers on where to look next or what
  the problem might be?

From the error message you are receiving, it appears that your
 ISP is using PAP authentication.

I used Kppp (from KDE) for installing my modem-connection. I did it the
first time but kde (in form of kppp) nearly did everything alone. It
even changes ip-settings when I use the modem instead of the ethernet,
...

And with kppp it is even easier to install than with the dumb
win95-prgs.

You can get the KDE-Beta4-deb-files at ftp://ftp.kde.org somewhere in
stable/dists...

Re: Laptop install

1998-04-17 Thread Gernot Bauer
I'm trying to help a friend install Linux from a laptop. The problem is
that it can have a floppy or a CDROM drive installed, but not both. The
solution seems to be to create an root/boot installation on a Win95 hard
disk, but I don't know how to do that. Any suggestions? No,
unfortunatly he can't boot from the CDROM. Not supported in the bios.

Get the 6 install disks and boot with them. You will have a base-system
installed. Then reboot and FTP-INSTALL the system (takes about 2 hours
via ethernet-PCMCIA-adapter). Works pretty well.

It's frozen so those problems can be fixed. Frozen means no more
changes other than bugfixes, not ready for prime time. That's what
 stable means.

Which problem did you have? The missing perl functions are solved by
the latest disks (I think; I'm going to test this later this week).

No they are not. You still get an error-message (some pearl-script is
missing) with the 98-03-29-disks (no newer disks on ftp.debian.org).

Hope there are new disks soon...

SOLVED: TeTex-Problems

I manually purged all (!) TeTex-packages and unset my

Then manually installed all 3 packages again (tetex-bin, -base and

Someone just had the same problem as I had (Unable to find

Doing xhosts + in response to an Invalid MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 key is
pretty much the equivalent of making all files writable by anyone
 (chmod

permission denied error when trying to access a file. Anyone that
 can get
to your machine can now do pretty much anything they want to it. So,
 unless
your machine is never connected to any kind of network, it's
 definitely a
*bad* idea. And the Invalid MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 key message that
 other
users get when trying to connect to your X server is definitely a
 *feature*
(enclosed in stars) as opposed to a feature (enclosed in quotes).

If you trust everyone who has a login on your machine, do xhost
+local: instead of xhost +. This will allow only non-network, local
 connections to your X server.
